In the debut issue of Block, back in the summer of 2013, we referenced Jane Jacobs’ notion of “knowledge spillovers,” the informal sharing of ideas and information that creates vibrant cities. Three years on, Jacobs’ concept remains at the heart of this magazine.

In this issue, we consider knowledge spillovers in a range of contexts. First, we visit the King Law Chambers (The Business, page 26), a remarkable law office that introduces the quintessential qualities of Allied Properties REIT’s buildings—human scale, brickand-beam design, a collaborative environment—to a profession that has long been relegated to the world of cubicles. Montreal’s Moment Factory (The Interior, page 20) expedites idea-sharing by keeping skateboards around its new Mile-Ex office. So far, it’s been a smooth ride: The company, which started out producing raves and now focuses on immersive, multimedia experiences, recently helped shape a Jay Z and Justin Timberlake tour and components of the Los Angeles International Airport.

Knowledge spillovers reappear in our feature on The Well (pictured above; Work-in-Progress, page 30), a mixed-use development in downtown Toronto that Allied is leading, along with RioCan and Diamond Corp. We go behind the scenes on the creation of the master plan—really, a vision for building a vibrant community from the ground up. The process is a fascinating case study in the ways in which complex, creative thinking is shaping cities today.

Ce numéro examine les retombées potentielles du savoir dans une variété de contextes. D’abord chez King Law Chambers (L’entreprise, p. 26), un cabinet juridique hors des sentiers battus, qui présente les caractéristiques essentielles des immeubles d’Allied Properties REIT, à savoir échelle humaine, murs de brique et poutres apparentes, milieu coopératif. Exit le cubicule où l’on travaille tout seul sous son néon !

Chez Moment Factory dans le Mile-Ex à Montréal (L’intérieur, p. 20), l’échange des idées se fait par… planche à roulettes. Et ça roule pour ce studio de divertissement qui est passé d’organisateur de raves à producteur d’expériences multimédia immersives, tant sur les tournées de Jay Z et de Justin Timberlake qu’à l’aéroport international de Los Angeles.

La diffusion du savoir réapparaît dans The Well (Le chantier, p. 30), un nouveau complexe immobilier à usage mixte, s’étendant sur 7,5 acres au centre ville de Toronto et réalisé par Allied, RioCan et Diamond Corp. On visite les coulisses de cette communauté dynamique qui est en train de sortir de terre, littéralement. On en découvre les plans, la vision d’ensemble et le processus de réflexion – dense, créatif et fascinant –, qui conduit à modeler la ville d’aujourd’hui.

The 53-year-old executive and artistic director of La Biennale de Montréal, a contemporary art event launched in 1998 by Le Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal, has been back in her hometown for almost three years. “I’m here because this is an interesting city, full of interesting people who do interesting work.” No one’s more interesting than Blass, a darkly funny sculptor with a fondness for junk-shop items whom Fortin hails as “one of the most important Canadian artists working today.” /

The former editor and executive director of Art Papers, Fortin has a critic’s mind and a project manager’s wherewithal. Brought on in 2013, she’s in the final months of executing her second edition of the Biennale in October. In collaboration with Philippe Pirotte, the Belgian-born curator, Fortin is in frequent contact with more than 45 artists hailing from 23 countries.

Providing guidance to the young is a priority; Blass, who’s contributing 10 new pieces to the Biennale, “doesn’t need the back-and-forth” says Fortin, but the erstwhile curator truly loves discussing concepts, materials and sites. “We want to provide the artists with opportunities to take risks.”

For now, Fortin is focused on cementing Montreal’s international position as a global art capital. “After a third edition in 2018, we’ll be a ‘can’t miss’ on calendars around the world,” she says. “That’s the goal. We shouldn’t be afraid to take up space.” / Et d’esprit

Cimenter la position de Montréal en tant que capitale mondiale des arts. « Après l’édition de 2018, ma troisième, on deviendra l’étape obligée, le rendez-vous à ne pas manquer. C’est le but. On ne doit pas avoir peur de prendre de l’ampleur. »

I STUDIED ANTHROPOLOGY AT MCGILL UNIVERSITY and industrial design at OCAD University (formerly the Ontario College of Art and Design). And in between those two degrees, I worked at a small ultimate-frisbee clothing company, doing screen printing and things like that. For years, I feverishly played ultimate around the world with the Toronto touring team. But I felt I wasn’t making enough with my hands. That’s why I went back to school.

Feltro was my thesis project at OCADU. I decided to look at the importance of play and how we do it. All my research led me to create something that would merge the kids’ play space with the adult living space—maybe a toy or a piece of furniture that came apart— something that kids could have fun and play with in different ways, timelessly.

Lego is the ultimate construction toy that a lot of us relate to.

Feltro is born out of that same mentality, but it is more of a playful object than a toy, and has the potential to become part of the design decor of the house. The way it works is that there are five magnets embedded in colourful felt trapezoids, divided and stitched into equilateral triangles. You can make forts; you can make costumes.

Making and selling jerseys at ultimate games allowed me to travel and keep playing, but I also developed a taste for visiting factories and understanding what went into making a garment: material ordering, speaking in terms of yield and yardage. Feltro really came out of my passion for processing materials.

Growing up in Toronto, my family home was full of art—cool, weird stuff. And puzzles! I love puzzles. I’ll draw one out on a piece of paper and cut it up: It’s a puzzle. In my parents’ house, if you want to get away from the family? Go to the puzzle room.

J’AI UN DIPLÔME D’ANTHROPOLOGIE de l’université McGill et un de design industriel de l’université OCAD [anciennement école d’art et de design de l’Ontario]. Entre les deux, j’ai travaillé pour une petite entreprise de maillots d’ultimate, en sérigraphie. Pendant des années, j’ai fait partie de l’équipe torontoise d’ultimate et j’ai joué dans le monde entier. Mais je trouvais que je n’utilisais pas assez mes mains, donc retour à l’école.

Feltro est mon projet de thèse de l’OCADU. C’est en examinant le jeu sous toutes ses coutures, son importance, ses pratiques, que m’est venue l’idée de créer un objet qui réunirait la salle de jeu des enfants et l’espace où vivent les adultes, un jouet ou un meuble modulable, bref, quelque chose avec lequel les enfants s’amuseraient longtemps et de diverses façons.

Lego est le jeu de construction par excellence; tout le monde ou presque connaît. Feltro est dans le même esprit sauf que c’est plus un objet ludique qu’un jouet et qu’il peut faire partie de la déco de la maison. Comment ça marche ? Cinq aimants sont intégrés dans des trapèzes de feutrine multicolores, chacun étant cousu en trois triangles équilatéraux. On peut s’en servir pour construire un château fort ou se déguiser.

L’impression et la vente de maillots aux compétitions d’ultimate m’a permis de voyager, de jouer au Frisbee mais aussi de me découvrir un nouvel intérêt : la fabrication des vêtements, les différents tissus, le métrage. Feltro est né de cette passion pour la confection textile.

De plus, j’ai grandi à Toronto dans une maison remplie d’objets d’art – des trucs cool et bizarres. Et des casse-têtes! J’adore les casse-têtes. Il suffit de faire un dessin, de le découper en morceaux et le tour est joué. Si je suis chez mes parents et que je veux être tranquille, direction la salle des casse-têtes!

These are just a handful of the international shows and locations that Montreal production company Moment Factory has transformed into immersive, eye-popping live experiences using its singular blend of lighting, video, sound and special effects.

For the first 15 years of its operation, however, the entertainment studio toiled out of the new-media equivalent of a suitcase. Its Mile End headquarters were industrial, square and simple, and hardly commensurate with the scale of the company’s ambitions. “We were testing projects in a small black box,” says artistic director Mareike Lenhart. “We were missing conference rooms. We had four bathroom stalls and one kitchen table for 170 people.”

In July 2015, that all changed. Moment Factory moved a few blocks north into Mile-Ex in an Allied Properties REIT–owned two-storey, 46,000-square-foot space at 6300 Avenue du Parc. In collaboration with Sakchin Bessette, Moment Factory’s co-founder

and executive creative director, Lenhart went to work on figuring out how to keep what was great about their previous headquarters and expand upon it. The keyword was practicality, and that extends to the budget-friendly furniture—almost entirely Ikea-sourced.

“There are very few design elements here. When we gave MU Architecture the project, we warned them that it wasn’t going to be a good portfolio piece,” says Bessette. “We wanted this to be a canvas for the teams living and working here, and for the space to continuously evolve and expand to meet our needs.”

What they also needed were functional common areas, ones in which people could work, hang out and gather. A grassy nook on the second floor is strictly a no-meeting zone. “This is to relax, be quiet,” says Lenhart. “People can look over the design and photography books and get inspired.” During a party, when an employee applied polka dots to the lunch room columns, they decided to keep them.

“Our space is something that grows organically. There’s a sense of mess because of it, of chaos, but we kind of like that,” says Bessette.

Des réalisations qui, pendant les 15 premières années, ont été conçues dans un espace plus que réduit : les bureaux du Mile-End ne reflétaient guère les ambitions de l’entreprise. « On testait les projets dans une pièce noire de la taille d’une boîte à chaussures, se rappelle la directrice artistique Mareike Lenhart. On n’avait pas de salles de conférence et seulement quatre toilettes pour 170 personnes. » Puis, en juillet 2015, la délivrance. Direction le Mile-Ex, quelques coins de rue plus au nord. Moment Factory emménage au 6300, avenue du Parc, dans un espace de 4 300 m2 répartis sur les deux étages d’un immeuble appartenant à Allied Properties REIT. En collaboration avec Sakchin Bessette, cofondateur et directeur de

création, Mareike Lenhart repense alors l’agencement des bureaux avec un seul mot d’ordre : la fonctionnalité. Tout se doit d’être pratique, jusqu’au mobilier, acheté en majorité chez Ikea. « Il y a très peu d’éléments de déco. Quand on a confié le projet à MU Architecture, on les a averti qu’on ne ferait sûrement pas partie de leur portfolio, précise Sakchin Bessette. On ne voulait qu’une toile de fond, capable d’évoluer en fonction des besoins de l’entreprise et de ceux de nos équipes qui vivent et travaillent ici. » Parmi ces besoins, on trouve des parties communes utiles, dans lesquelles on peut à la fois travailler et se détendre. Toute réunion est interdite sur le carré de gazon du second étage : « C’est un coin pour souffler, pour être au calme, explique Mareike Lenhart. Ici, on se laisse inspirer par le design et les livres de photo. » Quand, à l’occasion d’une fête, un employé a orné de pois les colonnes de la salle à dîner, ils ont décidé de les garder. « Notre espace de travail évolue naturellement. Il y règne du coup un certain désordre, un certain chaos, qui n’est pas pour nous déplaire », ajoute Sakchin Bessette.

Moment Factory grew out of Montreal’s rave and after-hours scene, and while the kinds of parties it throws have changed, the desire to facilitate fun hasn’t. On the main floor, on any given weekend, Moment Factory might be hosting a staff member’s birthday bash or, a cocktail party for the city’s arts council. According to Bessette, he and his fellow partners (chief innovation officer Dominic Audet and executive producer Éric Fournier) feel a sense of responsibility to Montreal’s cultural community. “Sometimes, we’re so focused on our stuff outside of the city. This way, we’re still contributing in some small way.”

These days, on the large-yet-local scale, Moment Factory’s most chattered-about contribution is the interactive illumination of the Jacques Cartier Bridge, slated for Montreal’s 375th anniversary in 2017. Details remain hush-hush, but a maquette of the iconic structure has pride of place in the office, waiting for its own moment to light up. / Moment Factory s’est éloignée des nuits montréalaises et de ses événements branchés. Pourtant, même si elle n’organise plus le même style de fêtes, son désir d’enchanter les foules n’a pas diminué. Et le nouveau plancher a vite fait de se transformer en dance floor pour l’anniversaire d’un de ses employés ou en soirée cocktail, à titre gracieux, pour le Conseil des arts de Montréal. Sakchin Bessette et ses partenaires, Dominic Audet, chef de l’innovation, et Éric Fournier, producteur exécutif, se sentent une responsabilité envers le milieu culturel de leur municipalité : « Parfois, on est trop concentré sur nos réalisations à l’extérieur. Ce genre de gestes est une façon d’apporter notre petite contribution. » En ce moment, la contribution locale à grande échelle dont tout le monde parle est l’illumination interactive du pont Jacques Cartier pour le 375e anniversaire de Montréal en 2017. Moment Factory passe les détails sous silence, mais une maquette du célèbre pont trône dans les bureaux, attendant sagement son heure pour s’embraser.

WHEN TORONTO CRIMINAL LAWYER Sean Robichaud first pocketed the keys to King Law Chambers’ new home last February, in an 1875 heritage building at 43 Front Street East, the Allied Properties REIT space was the very definition of a blank slate. It had been stripped to its bricks and pillars, and a disused fireplace remained behind, with a few old logs still stuck inside. That suited Robichaud just fine; he was after a flexible new kind of work environment, one that would attract young lawyers from many different fields. “The practice of law does not have to be done in cramped and dusty offices with drop ceilings and fluorescent lighting,” he says.

It doesn’t have to be practised in silos, either. Like other advocates of the ever-growing sharing economy—Breather, say, or WeWork— King Law Chambers provides a communal office space that keeps costs down and, more importantly, encourages collaboration. The 40-odd members of KLC, nearly all of whom are under the age of 45, practise independently or in small boutique firms. With Allied’s help and design input, the blank slate became a stylish open-work environment, complete with a Netf lix-equipped lounge and boardrooms that transform weekly into event spaces. The lawyers share receptionist services, amenities and secretarial support.

Evening bourbon tastings at the bar downstairs are not uncommon.

And a Lego shark named Mr. Chompers, Esq., makes periodic appearances on the chambers’ Instagram account. “It resembles a mix between a law firm and a tech start-up atmosphere,” says Daniel Perlin of Guardian Legal Consultants, a member.

Une situation qui convenait à ce criminaliste torontois, à la recherche d’un environnement de travail flexible, capable d’attirer de jeunes avocats exerçant dans des domaines variés : « On n’est pas obligé de pratiquer le droit dans des bureaux exigus et poussiéreux à la lumière des néons. » À la manière des autres défenseurs de l’économie participative, comme Breather ou WeWork, King Law Chambers (KLC) offre un espace de travail commun, permettant de diminuer les coûts, certes, mais surtout de favoriser la collaboration. Ses 40 et quelques cotravailleurs exercent en tant qu’indépendant ou dans des cabinets boutiques, et ont presque tous moins de 45 ans. Avec l’aide d’Allied, en design d’intérieur notamment, l’espace abandonné s’est transformé en aire ouverte chic, comprenant un salon équipé de Netflix et des salles de réunion, conçues aussi pour accueillir des événements. Les avocats se partagent les services de réception, de secrétariat et d’équipement. Leur mascotte ? Un homme-requin Lego, nommé Mr. Chompers Esq., qui apparaît régulièrement sur le fil Instagram de KLC. « Il illustre bien l’ambiance qui règne ici, entre cabinet juridique et jeune entreprise », commente Daniel Perlin, cotravailleur et cofondateur de Guardian Legal Consultants.

Guardian’s co-founder, Jasdeep Bal, adds that KLC, with its volume of lawyers and range of practices, can offer the same breadth of experience as a much larger firm. “Consulting with a family, criminal or immigration lawyer is as simple as stepping into the office next door,” he says. The ecosystem also assists lawyers at the very start of their careers. Newbies can take advantage of what KLC calls its “collaborative rates,” a month-to-month contract that provides all the services of the chambers without a designated office. Sanja Mavrak, a criminal and civil lawyer called to the bar two years ago, works on a laptop at a large communal table adjacent to a cozy reading nook. She can hold meetings in one of four boardrooms named after national parks—the intimate Terra Nova has plush chairs for prepping clients, while the sprawling Algonquin has a dynamite view of the Flatiron building—and can retreat to a private phone room for confidential calls. “When you’re starting on your own, there’s a lot to think about, a lot of overhead,” Mavrak says.

“KLC is a great option not only financially, but because there is room for mentorship if you are ambitious and hard-working.”

Robichaud wanted an environment that could be responsive to lawyers’ various needs and grow alongside their practices. And since the chambers moved to its new address in April, the number of affiliated lawyers has doubled. But Robichaud sees one of KLC’s most radical achievements to be the culture it has created: “Lawyers are starting to realize that they can actually enjoy coming to work, and they don’t have to pay a fortune to do it.”

KLC aide aussi les avocats en tout début de carrière, en leur faisant bénéficier de « tarifs collaboratifs » : les jeunes avocats profitent, sur une base mensuelle, de tous les services sans bureau attitré. Sanja Mavrak, avocate en droit pénal et civil, admise au barreau en 2014, pose chaque matin son ordinateur portable sur une grand table commune, adjacente au coin lecture. Elle peut utiliser au besoin l’une des quatre salles de réunion, baptisées du nom d’un grand parc – fauteuils somptueux pour l’intime Terra-Nova ou vue saisissante sur le Flatiron Building torontois pour l’immense salle Algonquin –, et passer ses appels confidentiels depuis une pièce privée. « Quand on débute à son compte, il y a tellement de choses auxquelles on doit penser, explique-t-elle. KLC est une excellente option, non seulement financièrement mais aussi pour se trouver un mentor, à condition d’être travaillant et ambitieux. » Sean Robichaud souhaitait un environnement de travail qui répondrait aux divers besoins des professionnels du droit et évoluerait grâce et avec eux. Depuis avril, date de l’emménagement de KLC dans ses nouveaux locaux, le nombre de cotravailleurs a doublé et surtout, une culture d’entreprise a vu le jour : « Les avocats commencent à prendre conscience qu’ils viennent au boulot avec plaisir, et ce, sans débourser une fortune. » Pari réussi jusqu’à présent.

How can something new feel familiar? For The Well, the trick involves replicating King West’s narrow, historic alleyways (pictured) and sustaining the neighbourhood’s human scale. American architect Daniel Burnham introduced the world to the City Beautiful Movement, a philosophy which held that the secret to harmonious cities was beautiful, functional architecture.

City Beautiful was among the first movements aimed at creating a comprehensive city plan, integrating infrastructure, architecture and community into its vision. The movement’s ideas have long since fallen out of favour, but its ambition endures as an urban ideal.

Still, most urban growth today happens outside of a real master plan. Developers arrive, build a condo or an office tower on a site and hope that it integrates into the surrounding neighbourhood. Cities, after all, are mostly already built: It’s rare to design not just a building but an entire community and to shape the relationship between office, retail, residential, parks and sidewalks within it. That, however, is precisely what Hariri Pontarini Architects is doing for The Well, a seven-and-a-half acre site bounded by Front Street West, Wellington Street West, Spadina Avenue and Draper Street in downtown Toronto.

According to the firm’s principal, David Pontarini, developing this master plan is “a high-level positioning exercise, one that establishes the principles that will help guide future developers.”

A core challenge of master planning, he says, is “thinking about how you organize a number of different uses on a single site, and

then harmonizing that with city regulations and community demands.” Making this even trickier, Pontarini also has to balance the wishes of the project’s three developers: retail specialist RioCan REIT, residential experts Diamond Corp., and Allied Properties REIT, which is focused on the office component and on the King West community at large.

“Balancing partnerships, even when they’re just internal ones, is a process in and of itself,” says Hugh Clark, Allied’s VP of development. “But when you have three different groups who represent different uses, that’s probably the most difficult thing.”

The name, The Well, suggests a deep reservoir or good health, but it’s actually aspirational (as in “properly”). So, too, is the vision for the site, which includes a 36-storey office tower, extensive retail, 1.5 million square feet of residential space, and a network of lush public walkways. Also essential to the project’s master plan is integrating the development into the fabric of the neighbourhood.

Those walkways, for example, were inspired by the narrow paths that surround many of King West’s heritage buildings. The new promenades will echo the old mews in scale and character to ensure the new build is consistent with its context. The parkettes that comprise the area’s modest green space will be connected by tree-lined thoroughfares; the historic brick workers’ cottages on Draper Street will be preserved; and >> (Continued on p. 36)

découvrait un nouveau concept urbanistique : le mouvement Beautiful City, mené par le célèbre architecte américain Daniel Burnham. Le principe ? La beauté d’une ville passe par une architecture harmonieuse et fonctionnelle. City Beautiful a été l’un des premiers à proposer une planification urbaine intégrant infrastructures, architecture et communautés. Les idées de ce mouvement ont beau avoir disparu, son ambition, un aménagement urbain reposant sur une vue d’ensemble, demeure un idéal.

La plupart des développements immobiliers actuels sont conçus sans réel plan directeur. Les promoteurs arrivent sur un site et y construisent des condos ou une tour à bureaux en espérant qu’ils s’intégreront à l’environnement existant. Après tout, Rome ne s’est pas faite en un jour : il est rare d’avoir à bâtir toute une collectivité et à organiser les liens entre logements résidentiels, bureaux, commerces, espaces verts et voies de circulation. C’est pourtant ce que le cabinet d’architecture Hariri Pontarini est en train de réaliser pour The Well, un site de 7,5 acres au centre ville de Toronto, bordé par l’avenue Spadina et les rues Draper, Front O. et Wellington O. Comme l’explique David Pontarini, directeur du cabinet d’architectes, concevoir un plan directeur est « un exercice de haut niveau, puisqu’il s’agit d’établir les principes qui guideront les futurs promoteurs ». Ici, le principal défi à relever est « de réfléchir à l’organisation de différents

usages sur un même site , puis de les harmoniser avec les règlements municipaux et les demandes des communautés ». Plus délicat encore, il faut trouver le juste équilibre entre les souhaits des trois promoteurs du projet : RioCan REIT, spécialisé en développement commercial, Diamond Corp, en résidentiel, et Allied Properties REIT, chargé de la partie bureaux et de la collectivité de King West. « L’équilibre des partenariats, même internes, constitue déjà tout un processus en soi, explique Hugh Clark, vice-président du développement chez Allied. Et quand on a trois groupes différents, représentant trois secteurs et donc trois usages différents, c’est encore plus difficile. » Le terme anglais « well » signifie à la fois le puits et le bien; mais c’est l’adjectif ambitieux qui lui convient le mieux. Aspirer à une situation meilleure, telle est la vision du projet, qui comprend une tour à bureaux de 36 étages, de très nombreux commerces, 140 000 m2 de logements résidentiels et un dédale d’allées luxuriantes. L’intégration du projet dans le tissu urbain du quartier fait aussi partie du plan directeur.

Pour les allées, par exemples, les architectes ont puisé leur inspiration dans les ruelles étroites qui longent les immeubles patrimoniaux de King West. Elles auront le cachet et les mêmes dimensions que les anciennes venelles, assurant à la nouvelle construction une bonne incorporation dans son environnement. Les mini-parcs qui composent les modestes espaces verts seront reliés par des voies arborées; les maisons ouvrières en brique de la rue Draper seront préservées; et le... (suite p. 36)

Hariri Pontarini’s Michael Conway, the project’s lead architect, says that his team studied the neighbourhood’s alleys and avenues.

“We wanted to look at how you can get around off of the main streets, which is key,” he says. “The neighbourhood itself is vibrant, because it’s very pedestrian-friendly. We’re taking our cues from that.” They also took guidance from a number of UK communities—Belfast’s Victoria Square, Bristol’s Cabot Circus and Birmingham’s Bullring, among them.

International inspiration was important because, simply put, Toronto lags in building true mixed-use projects. “There aren’t that many examples from the past 15, 20 years,” Pontarini says.

“Developers either like to build offices, residential or retail, and they stay out of each other’s hair. That’s what’s unique about this project: You have three leading developers in each of those sectors who’ve decided to come together to get the biggest things done.”

The team behind The Well hopes their project will help spur a revival of master planning—or, at least, more holistic thinking about development. The City of Toronto does, too: its Design Review Panel, a team of private sector design professionals, called the proposal “enlightened urbanism.” Says Clark, “I think, and I hope, we’ll see more of it in this city.”

Les promoteurs aiment construire soit des bureaux, soit du résidentiel, soit des commerces, et pas question de marcher sur les plates bandes de l’autre. Ce qui est unique dans The Well, c’est d’avoir trois promoteurs, provenant de chacun de ces secteurs, qui ont décidé de travailler ensemble afin de réaliser les plus grandes étapes de ce projet. » Toute l’équipe espère que The Well relancera la vision d’ensemble en planification urbaine, ou du moins, qu’il conduira à une réflexion plus globale. La ville de Toronto partage ce souhait de tout cœur : son Design Review Panel, un groupe de professionnels de l’architecture du secteur privé, a qualifié la proposition « d’urbanisme éclairé ». Et Hugh Clark de conclure : «Je crois, et j’espère, qu’on verra plus de projets comme celuici dans cette ville. »

So we end up in this state of constant creation: make it, put it out there, get the reaction, repeat. You can create something that breaks the Internet today, but then you’re back to square one. The pleasure that emerges from that sense

of ephemerality turns out to be more lasting than we think it is. I think we all want a cultural ecology where there are both of those things, and so the question is whether digital culture is moving us to a place where there might be only the one. THE MODERN COCKTAIL RENAISSANCE has spawned dozens of Canadian micro-distillers producing premium, award-winning spirits. But one key cocktail ingredient has long eluded them: vermouth. It’s complicated to make, for one thing; it doesn’t sell that well; and the market is dominated by big brands. But for Geoff Dillon, co-owner of Dillon’s Small Batch Distillers, location is everything. Being in the heart of Niagara’s wine country made the spirit a natural fit for his company’s growing lineup: “We’ve got the grapes. We’ve got all these botanicals. We better make some vermouth.”

Vermouth is a fortified and aromatized wine that dates back to the Shang dynasty in 1250 B.C. Modern wine-based vermouth was first developed in the 18th century as a medicinal tonic. By the late 1800s it had evolved into a popular aperitif in Europe and an essential modifier in American cocktails such as the Manhattan.

It was Dillon’s love of Manhattans that inspired him to first take a crack at sweet vermouth to pair with his three-year-old Canadian rye whisky, which will be released later this year. After they developed 60 different formulas over the course of 12 months, Dillon and his team finally settled on a recipe. Even though sweet vermouth is often called “red,” “rossi” or “rouge,” it’s made from white wine, in this case a local single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.

It’s fortified with a neutral grape-based spirit, then coloured and sweetened with caramel. This vermouth is aromatized with tinctures of, among other things, sarsaparilla, bitter orange, vanilla and wormwood. The latter ingredient is grown on-site by Geoff’s father, Peter, a scientist, professor and the chief botanist at Dillon’s. “Wormwood is mainly used to add bitterness,” says Geoff.

“We find it also gives ours an herbal, earthy undertone and adds to the mouth feel.” A final, semi-secret ingredient uses the leftover fruit from Dillon’s Strawberry Gin. The macerated berries, from

Tigchelaar Berry Farms, are pressed to extract every drop of boozy juice, which gives the vermouth a subtle fruity sweetness with just a hint of gin.

The final product is delicious in a Manhattan, of course, or a Negroni. Better yet, it can be sipped neat. “It’s really nice just on its own,” says Dillon. “Ice cold, served in a tulip glass. Le vermouth est venu s’ajouter tout naturellement à la production de cette distillerie en pleine expansion : « On a le raisin. On a toutes ces plantes aromatiques. Autant faire du vermouth. » Ce vin fortifié et aromatisé remonte à la dynastie Shang, 1 250 ans avant J.-C. Sa version moderne date, quant à elle, des 18e et 19e siècles, qui l’ont vu passer de boisson tonique aux vertus curatives à apéritif populaire européen et exhausteur de goût des cocktails américains, tels le Manhattan.

C’est ce dernier, le préféré de Geoff, qui a poussé notre distilleur à créer un vermouth doux à associer à son Rye de trois ans d’âge, un whisky de seigle 100 % canadien qui sera commercialisé d’ici la fin de l’année. Douze mois ont été nécessaires à l’élaboration de la recette finale. Bien que souvent appelé rouge ou rossi, le vermouth doux est à base de vin blanc, un Sauvignon blanc d’origine locale dans ce cas, qui a été fortifié par un alcool de raisin neutre, puis coloré et sucré avec du caramel et, enfin, aromatisé à la salsepareille, à l’orange amère, à la vanille et à l’armoise, notamment. Cette dernière plante aromatique est cultivée sur place par Peter, père de Geoff et botaniste en chef de la distillerie Dillon’s. « Si l’armoise sert principalement à donner de l’amertume, on a trouvé qu’elle apportait un plus en bouche, une saveur herbeuse, terreuse », explique Geoff. Un autre ingrédient semi-secret de la recette des Dillon? Des fraises, qui proviennent du producteur de petits fruits local Tigchelaar et entrent dans la composition de leur gin à la fraise. Une fois macérées, elles sont pressées pour en extraire un jus alcoolisé qui donne au vermouth une douceur fruitée, mêlée d’un soupçon de gin.

Délicieux dans un Manhattan, of course, ou dans un Negroni, ce vermouth artisanal signé Dillon’s peut se siroter tel quel : « Il se suffit à lui-même. Nous, on le boit glacé et servi dans un verre tulipe. »

bred arts entrepreneurs, embarked on a world tour with Cirque du Soleil. Every time they arrived in a new city, the duo enlisted a local street artist to create a poster for the troupe’s show. Before long, they had established a worldwide network of designers, graffiti artists and muralists—and stumbled upon dozens of vibrant underground art festivals. “We have great artists in Montreal,” they told themselves. “Why don’t we do one of these in our own city?”

So, in 2013, they rounded up arts impresarios Alexis Froissart and Nicolas Munn Rico and founded the Mural Festival. Since, it has become an annual 11-day bacchanal that fills Boulevard Saint-

Laurent with music, food and, of course, street art: Every year, artists paint about 20 murals on buildings along the drag. “At first, it was tough finding walls to use,” says general manager PierreAlain Benoît. “There are a lot of misconceptions about street art,” that it’s ugly or downright illegal. The Saint-Laurent Boulevard Business Development Board, however, didn’t need convincing: a few members owned a restaurant in a building with a mural on it and knew what kind of business a bright, bold fresco could attract.

They convinced other owners to let their walls become canvasses, and Allied Properties REIT, a partner of the fest, helped to do the same.

This past June, dozens of artists from as near as Montreal (for instance, artist Stikki Peaches) and as far away as Spain (multimedia master Pantone) filled those walls with murals spanning all styles and sizes. So far, the fest has yielded about 80 murals—a dozen of which have covered up older works—and, in the process, attracted about a million festival goers every year. “Our goal is to democratize urban art,” Benoît says. “People know big names in music—the Eminems, the Red Hot Chili Peppers—but even if they can appreciate a mural, they probably don’t know the big names of street art. We want to help them discover that universe.”

Les gens connaissent les grands noms de la musique, Eminem ou Red Hot Chili Peppers, mais rarement ceux des muralistes, même s’ils apprécient leur travail. On est là pour leur faire découvrir cet univers. »

WHEN SAMUEL RICHARDSON, a veteran of the British cavalry, hung his sabre in 1873, he settled in Toronto and built a two-storey Tudor house at 460 King Street West. Two years later, he added a third storey, topped by a trio of gabled windows and a mansard roof, and opened the Richardson House Hotel. Business boomed and a fourstorey brick annex was completed in 1887. After Richardson died in 1904, the hotel underwent several names changes before it became the Spadina Hotel in 1916. The structure was added to the city’s heritage list in 1985, though its significance was also historic; in the 1960s and ’70s, its bar was the epicentre of the city’s burgeoning punk and queer scenes. The hotel closed in 1997, was given a garish paint job and was renamed The Global Village Backpackers Hostel.

In 2014, Allied Properties REIT purchased the building and began a full restoration. The mansard roof was repaired, a century of cladding was scraped away and everything inside was stripped to its brick-and-beam essentials. 460 King West is now home to both Quantum Coffee, a café, and BrainStation, a tech education hub. After 140 years of serving the weary and thirsty, the northwest corner of King and Spadina is now fully caffeinated and percolating with fresh ideas. / QUAND SAMUEL RICHARDSON, vétéran de la cavalerie britannique,

Inscrit au patrimoine torontois depuis 1985, son architecture et son histoire sont d’égale importance. Dans les années 1960 et 1970, son bar est le lieu de rendez-vous des communautés punk et homosexuelle, alors en plein essor. L’hôtel Spadina ferme en 1997 et, après un coup de peinture haut en couleur, se transforme en auberge de jeunesse, The Global Village Backpackers Hostel.

En 2014, Allied Properties REIT rachète l’édifice et le rénove du sol au plafond. Le toit mansardé est réparé et l’intérieur, complètement mis à nu pour ne garder que l’essentiel : poutres et murs de brique. Il accueille désormais les très high-tech Quantum Coffee et BrainStation, formant un pôle d’innovation technologique. Après 140 ans de service auprès des voyageurs, le 460, rue King O. est devenu une pépinière à idées, parfaitement caféinées.

IT IS A TRUTH universally acknowledged that a space littered with objects is in need of a good tidy. Clean lines and unfettered surfaces reign supreme, not just in the design world, but in our very dreams. An organized home is an organized mind, a life in control.

Declutter your life! It’s such a compelling fantasy—order, control, beauty—not to mention it cultivates a warming inner sense of superiority. And why wouldn’t you want to be able to find your keys at the same time you find your bliss?

One compact, well-known Japanese woman has built an empire out of the “life-changing magic of tidying up,” imploring us to ditch any object that doesn’t “spark joy.” Marie Kondo is such a diehard she was once hospitalized from overtidying.

(I confess that sparks joy in my sadistic side.) While Kondo is a tidying hero, this narrative also has villains. What figure generates more horror and pity than the hoarder? The hoarder’s long shadow casts shame on the clutter of others, keeping us in our tidy places.

But we lose more than we realize when we sacrifice to the

gods of tidiness. One of those things is a lush creative space.

Clutter is the archaeological result of our lives; it’s an oasis of tactility in a paperless world.

This detritus holds memory, scent, feeling and the germs of innumerable ideas. (Maybe real germs, too.) Life is messy, and in that mess we find surprising connections and undeniable truths. That’s called creativity.

We all need more of it, not less.

Imagine what it would mean if, as Kondo implores, we truly edited our world to cater to joy only. The spectre of that emotional homogeneity is downright terrifying. I’ll take the mess. It’s proof I was here, that I struggled. That’s the stuff art is made of.

Here’s the thing about clutter: no two people do it the same. And there is beauty in those personal ecosystems.

Tidying away our lives creates a comforting, Matrix-like illusion. But artists, more than anyone, need to take the red pill; they need to see the world as it truly is so that they can envision what it can also be.

C’est tellement tentant : l’ordre, la maîtrise, la beauté. Sans oublier un agréable sentiment de supériorité. Et puis, qui n’a pas envie de retrouver ses clés en même temps que son bonheur intérieur?

La japonaise Marie Kondo, compacte et célèbre, a bâti son empire sur le pouvoir étonnant du rangement, nous implorant de nous débarrasser de tout objet qui ne nous procure pas de joie. Cette irréductible a même été hospitalisée une fois pour « sur-rangement ». (cela a procuré de la joie à mon coté sadique, je l’avoue). Comme dans tout bon scénario, on a une héroïne, Mme Blancheville, et des méchants : les accumulateurs compulsifs. Horreur, compassion et culpabilité nous envahissent alors, nous intimant de mettre fin à notre fouillis.

Sauf que l’on perd plus qu’on ne croit en s’offrant en sacrifice sur l’autel du rangement. On perd notamment un endroit où la créativité foisonne. La pagaille est la preuve archéologique de la vie, une oasis tactile dans un monde sans papier. Ces

détritus sont porteurs de souvenirs, d’odeurs, d’émotions et de germes d’innombrables idées (de vrais germes aussi, sans doute). La vie est désordre, et c’est dans ce désordre que naissent les idées les plus étonnantes. C’est ce que l’on appelle la créativité. Et il nous en faut plus, pas moins.

FAIRE LE TRI DE NOTRE MONDE POUR N’EN GARDER QUE LA JOIE EST UNE PENSÉE TERRIFIANTE. Imaginons un instant la méthode KonMari appliquée à grande échelle : on trie notre monde pour n’en garder que la joie. Le spectre de ce sentiment unique est tout bonnement terrifiant. Pour moi, ce sera la pagaille, merci! C’est la preuve que j’étais là, que je me suis battue.

Surtout que personne ne pratique l’art de l’encombrement de la même façon; et il y a là de la beauté. Ranger notre vie crée une illusion de sécurité à la Matrix. Mais les artistes, plus que quiconque, doivent choisir la pilule rouge; ils doivent voir le monde tel qu’il est de manière à pouvoir l’envisager autrement.

Oubliez la microgestion : vouloir tout maîtriser est une illusion. Apprenez plutôt à aimer le chaos. Au fait, maintenant que j’y pense, vous n’auriez pas vu mes clés?
