BUILDING BETTER // 2024
Twin Ports Interchange, Duluth, MN
In a world that’s constantly evolving, our strength lies in our ability to shift and adapt. A bright future lies ahead, and we’re committed to shaping it for our industry and communities. With remarkable projects, exceptional people, and Alliant’s strong foundation, we have big plans for the future.

As we advance towards our 29th birthday this fall, we focus on our mission and values…and our vision of growth long into the future. At Alliant, we are passionate about building better communities for our clients, our employee-owners, our partners and our industry.

Two of our ideals that drive Alliant and help us to achieve our mission are Creating Value and continuing to be Future Focused. We create value everyday for our clients by proposing innovative solutions that save them valuable time and money and then we follow up with the best customer service in the industry.

Throughout our almost three decades of growth, Alliant has focused on the future by leading the way on technology, expanding our service offerings to our clients, growing our geographic footprint and ensuring that our future workforce is growing industry wide.

At Alliant, our values form the basis of what we do every day, and, how we do it. Focusing on our values allows us to serve our most important assets, our clients and our employee-owners.

Building and maintaining solid relationships is central to what we do at Alliant. These partnerships create a trusting and collaborative environment leading to innovative design solutions that are second to none.

As engineers, planners, landscape architects and surveyors, projects begin and end with us. That’s why our clients count on us to be responsive. When we’re on the job, things get done.

Our work impacts the entire fabric of our community.

We don’t just deliver exceptional projects; we create value. For us, it’s personal, and our commitment shines through in everything we do.

STEP 4: FINAL RENDERING in the process was to render the image. Style, value, color scheme, and time of day were decided upon by the artist and client to further the narrative and architecture. Images were digitally produced to mimic watercolor renderings. This allowed the process to be flexible as the The rendering was reviewed once more, and the client was able to comment on the rendering portion of the process so we could make any final adjustments, as necessary. At this point, the perspective drawing was then completed.

Pablo Park (above left). Pablo Park is a mixed-use development boasting 725 apartment units, shopping, student housing, 55+, and a luxurious 200-room hotel. We are proud to support this project through design of the enhanced landscape concepts. Located in Jacksonville, Florida near the beautiful town center shopping district, this 36-acre parcel provides three public parks, five private apartment courtyards with an exercise pool, dog park, lounge pool, and numerous relaxing spaces to enjoy with friends. Outdoor dining, shopping, and boardwalks along Pablo Creek provide additional opportunities to enjoy the beautiful weather and celebrate all that Florida’s largest city has to offer.

Giving Back (above). We believe it’s crucial to give back to our communities. Our employee-owners regularly volunteer at local food banks, participate in food drives (winning the 2023 Engineering CEO’s of Minnesota Food Drive), and engage in activities like Adopt-A-Highway, assisting Scout Troops, supporting the Works Museum, and contributing to community events in our area. 9

Bob Green and Dennis Olmstead Scholarship and Endowment Funds (above). Last year we celebrated the retirement of Bob Green and Dennis Olmstead! Two of Alliant’s shareholders, Bob and Dennis both started in the early 2000s when Alliant was less than 20 people. Their influence and enthusiasm helped grow Alliant into the company we are today. To honor them and their legacy of mentorship and industry involvement, we created the Robert J. Green Undergraduate Student Scholarship through the North-Central Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (NCITE) and the Dennis Olmstead Student Scholarship through the Minnesota Land Surveyors Foundation.

It’s about always doing our best and being the best at what we do.

Timing is Everything (above left). We have developed and implemented optimized traffic signal timing plans on over 115 major projects and this project for the City of St. Paul is one of the latest. Providing regular retiming has proven to be a prudent action for agencies to take to maintain the efficiency of signalized intersections. The downtown area of St. Paul has undergone significant infrastructure, development, and traffic circulation changes. These changes presented the need to conduct a comprehensive signal system analysis of the downtown area. Our work improved traffic flow in alignment with new development including the event-filled area around the Xcel Center and CHS Field.

Young Professionals Group (above right). We know how important it is for young people to have a solid foundation of peers early in their careers. Alliant’s Young Professionals Group fosters connectivity of peers both internal to the organization and externally. The group recently developed a project tour that included engineering students from the University of Minnesota, hosted a welcome lunch for incoming interns and graduates, and held several inter-departmental information sessions aimed at sharing expertise across disciplines.

Hillcrest Village (above left). As part of a group of industry partners pitching in to better our community, we provided our services to a new housing development in Northfield, Minnesota. Hillcrest Village provides a place for households to transition between emergency, transitional, and affordable housing without having to move. The design includes six buildings containing 17 rental units of varying sizes providing this in-demand housing, all in one place. Alliant engineers developed a concept site layout, relocating the entrance road on this existing site to a quiet side street to maximize safety and provide residential ambiance. Our pro-bono efforts encompassed civil engineering plans, stormwater management, utility plans, and permitting embodying the spirit of “neighbors helping neighbors”.

Significant technical quality and digital delivery are what set us apart. Our Bentley Accredited Road Designers are raising the bar in our industry. (top right).

Create Value

Public-Private Partnerships (above left). Led by the St. Paul Port Authority, The Heights housing project transforms the former Hillcrest Golf Course in St. Paul into 1,000+ housing units. With Doran Companies, Alliant is part of the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity team focused on single-family, twin, and townhomes. This initiative will provide affordable housing over the next five years, fostering homeownership opportunities. With nearly 150 homes, The Heights marks Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s largest initiative. We are proud to work alongside JO Companies, and lead housing developer, Sherman Associates. Excitement is building for the upcoming Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project hosted by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood!

By solving challenges and delivering the best solutions, we create value that lives on long after the project is finished.

Funding Assistance (above right). Project funding is a crucial part of our industry. Our team excels at guiding the application process, advocating for funding, and showcasing the projects story to raise its profile. We write grant applications, provide technical data and studies, and help clients identify funding programs that suit their projects, advancing their progress. Our recent applications secured over $46 million for our clients.

Serving the Traveling Public (above). The I90 Unbonded Overlay project in southern Minnesota extends the life of the existing highway while improving the quality of the ride experienced by travelers. As part of the PCiRoads Design/Build team, Alliant is enhancing this 20-mile segment of interstate highway using digital delivery and a commitment to innovative ideas. The pavement on this portion of the east/west artery for crossing the country was in poor condition requiring substantial maintenance each spring. The improvements started with a detailed survey by Alliant’s survey team, which provided the data necessary for our engineers to design models used in automated machine control for the grading and paving through the lifespan of the project.

All Together Now (above left). Alliant offers many different services, all of which stand on their own. However, we’re most excited when we all get to work together on the same project. Our collaboration skills were on display as we redesigned a onemile stretch of Smetana Road on the border of the Cities of Hopkins and Minnetonka including a shared-use trail. From land survey, to civil engineering, environmental services, water resources and construction services, the teamwork on this project increased safety for pedestrians and opened access to a nearby trail network.

Collaboration

To take on the BIG challenges, we collaborate with our clients, our partners, and each other.

Working for the Greater Good (above right). Alliant is leading preparation of MnDOT’s updated Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), the planning tool that sets the direction for safety strategies and investments on Minnesota roadways. With the goal of working toward zero deaths and serious injuries for all roadway users, the plan integrates technical data and input from stakeholders around the state, such as at the recent Tribal Transportation Safety Summit in Hinckley.

Whiteview Village (above left). Construction is nearly complete at Whiteview Village in Palm Coast, Florida. This community will provide housing for 202 families and features a community pool, cabana and kayak launch, perfect for those sunny Florida days. The cooperation and partnerships required to design and build these communities is remarkable and one of the best things about this business.

Working the Plan (above left). At Alliant, strategic planning is a continual process that guides our future direction while preserving our entrepreneurial spirit. As an employeeowned company, it is critical to keep our employee-owners informed about and engaged in shaping our strategic trajectory. Our Strategic Plan for Growth contains baseline revenue and staffing goals and projects these datapoints at various intervals into the future for the company as a whole and for each region. These growth objectives create avenues for our team members to grow in terms of professional development, project management, design of exciting and important projects and in firm leadership.

We look forward to the next idea, the next solution, and the next opportunity to build better communities.

Alliant Welcomes Steve Garbe (above right). By strategically managing our growth, we ensure the highest level of service and quality for our clients. Simultaneously, we maintain and enhance our company culture as we scale up into new geographic footprints and service areas. Late last year, we expanded our service offerings further into Florida. Leading our Tampa practice is industry veteran and transportation systems expert, Steve Garbe. Alliant is uniquely positioned to serve this rapidly growing area of the Southeast United States through our specific combination of infrastructure and private development services.

Trailblazing (above left). In its second year, Alliant’s education-based community outreach program Trailblazers made a significant impact on the engineering industry’s future. Working directly with schools and through partnerships with groups like SciMath MN and Junior Achievement, Trailblazers introduces kids of all ages to engineering and land surveying. Our largest events began with STEM Day at the Minnesota State Fair during which more than 1,000 kids visited the “You Belong in STEM” event. At our “Build A Community” booth, children were invited to design their own community using custom pieces shaped as roadways, homes, ponds, and parks. Next we hosted high-school students from Johnson High School in St. Paul for a hands-on introduction to engineering and survey careers.
