From softball leagues (pg. 50-51) to skateboard lessons (pg. 37) to “Fri-Yay” evening swims at Ford Pool (pg. 23), Allen Parks and Recreation offers ways for all ages, skills and comfort levels to stay active and enjoy the great outdoors.

Ken Fulk, Mayor CITY OF ALLEN

I’ve watched our Parks and Recreation system grow by leaps and bounds during my previous terms on Allen City Council and my 37 years as an Allen resident. Now as your mayor, I’m excited to help guide this growth as we continue offering top-notch facilities, programs and opportunities to enjoy Allen’s natural beauty. Not only do these outlets help improve our physical health, they give us important ways to connect with our neighbors and nurture the relational health of our families, friendships and larger community. I’m honored for this opportunity to serve you as Mayor of Allen as we build our community and grow stronger together—both this summer and in years to come.

Letter from the Mayor

ART IS IN THE AIR!

NEW PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION The next time you visit Allen Event Center, don't forget to look up! A new public art piece, entitled Perpetual Flux, is now suspended from the rotunda. The installation features a kinetic artwork with sculptural elements which move in a wave-like manner. Artists Shane Allbritton and Norman Lee said "this perpetual flux [is] a poetic metaphor for the dynamism of the Event Center."

PLAN YOUR VISIT: ALLENEVENTCENTER.COM SUMMER SAVINGS TIPS

OPTIMIZE YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM During the summer, up to 60% of water used in Allen comes from residential irrigation systems, mainly due to landscape watering. The EPA estimates that 50% of outdoor water use is wasted, in part due to overwatering. Take control of your water use before the temperature (and your water bill) climbs. Visit our website to learn how to check your controller settings, repair broken sprinkler heads, adjust watering cycles for clay-heavy soil and more. The easiest way to take control of water use? Keep automatic irrigation controls in the "off" position and turn them on only when necessary.

DEVELOP FUTURE READERS

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN Give your child the tools to become a reader with a self-paced program offered by Allen Public Library. 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten prompts children and caregivers to read together. Open to children from birth to kindergarten, with prizes for every 100 books completed.

CAN I REALLY READ 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN?

Yes! Read three a day and you'll finish in a year. Or read just one a day and complete the goal in three years. Repetition is great for growing minds; every time you read the same book, it counts toward your goal.

SERVE YOUR CITY, PROVIDE INPUT!

ALLEN BOARDS & COMMISSIONS City boards, commissions and committees are ways for citizens to participate in local government by shaping public policy and recommending local legislation. In Allen, members of these appointed groups advise City Council on a variety of topics including planning, zoning, transportation, parks, libraries, building and public art. Applications for Allen boards and commissions are collected each summer, with appointments made in September and effective October 1.
