When Allendale HAS A DOWNTOWN...
In an earlier 2025 edition of The Allendale Announcer, readers were introduced to a forward-thinking collaboration between the Allendale Charter Township Downtown Development Authority, the Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce, and Grand Valley State University’s Geography and Sustainable Planning Department. The goal: to explore and envision what a future downtown Allendale could look like—through a research-driven, student-led initiative. This partnership recently reached an exciting milestone.
In early May, during a regularly scheduled Allendale Township Board meeting, the results of this unique project were presented to a full room of community members, township board officials, Chamber board representatives, GVSU faculty, and proud friends and family Those in attendance were treated to an engaging and forward-looking presentation by GVSU students Dylan Mason, Angelina Vitale, and Madelyn Graham, under the guidance of Professor Chad Frederick.
The student team showcased a series of downtown design concepts developed through extensive research and supported by advanced 3D imaging and placemaking software. These renderings offered a compelling vision of what Allendale’s downtown could become—a vibrant and intentional space that respects the township’s rural heritage while accommodating growth and fostering family-centered community life. The renderings were made possible through the support of community partners like Allendale Christian School, Ottawa County Sherriff, Family Fare, and many others.
Through customizable main street layouts, mixed-use housing, green spaces, entertainment zones, and gathering spots, the students presented multiple scenarios that maximize the use of space while reinforcing Allendale’s unique identity. Their professionalism, creativity, and thoughtful approach left a lasting impression on the audience and demonstrated how academic research can translate into real-world impact.
More than just a presentation, this moment marked the beginning of a broader, multi-phase initiative. The collaboration offers an invaluable opportunity not only for students to gain hands-on experience, but also for Allendale to benefit from research-backed insights rooted in sustainable planning principles. As this partnership continues, so too does the vision. With the continued support of the community and GVSU, Allendale is poised to take meaningful steps toward creating a downtown that serves as a central gathering place—a space where tradition meets innovation, and where everyone feels at home.
When Allendale has a downtown, it won’t just be a destination. It will be a reflection of who we are, and a place where the future of our community takes shape.
