Los Angeles band the black watch has released 17 records since 1988 and is, according to the equally venerable Trouser Press, “a national treasure of fuzzy-jangly-catchy super literate indie pop.” Joined since 2008 by ex-The Chills lead guitarist and singer Steven Schayer, the band has a live sound that the Austin Chronicle has called “VU meets Soft Boys madness.” Interestingly, founder John Andrew Fredrick has just published his second work of fiction, a novel about an indie rock band; it’s called The King of Good Intentions (Verse Chorus Press) and pre-orders and early Amazon sales have been nothing less than astonishing — the best VCP have enjoyed in 20 years in the business! Fredrick has been giving readings accompanied by solo acoustic shows in order to promote the novel, and a full-band tour is in the works for Fall 2013.

“John Andrew Fredrick, after a zillion albums, always has an uncanny knack for finding melody in the dissonance, chaos in the calm.” — AUSTIN CHRONICLE “With its sweet melodies and dreamy distortion, this LP is chock-full of wonderful tunes and harmonies that put one in mind of The Go-Betweens x My Bloody Valentine.” — DETROIT METRO TIMES “With a vocal prowess that rivals Robert Smith’s, John Andrew Fredrick writes the dreamiest pop songs this side of Kevin Shields.” — POPMATTERS Key Markets: Hometown: Los Angeles.
