Romans 12:5 Dear Alumni and Friends, Our spiritual theme for the 2015-2016 school year is our recognition that we represent FAMILY here at ACND. We are all interconnected as one body. More importantly as one body we represent the body of Christ here on Earth and must act accordingly. Faith, Family, Excellence has been our calling card for the last three years. This year we want to celebrate the feeling of family that we enjoy here at ACND. We will strengthen our familial bonds with one another in our school community but also reach out to the surrounding communities to exhibit who we are and why ACND represents what it is to be the body of Christ. This feeling of family at ACND was recognized by both the AdvancED and Catapult teams that visited our school last April. Family has always permeated our schools and is something special we foster and celebrate. As a family we have high expectations of our ACND community. We will continue to advance our quality academic tradition that encourages the scholars of tomorrow, field athletic teams that are champions not just by winning but moreover by the behavior and class of our athletes, nurture a spirit of community and family that instills compassion for one another inside and outside our community. We the ACND FAMILY continue to offer a great example of how a diverse group of people can work together to affect positive change in the world. We ask that our alumni and friends to come and join us in our endeavor of FAMILY and reengage themselves at ACND. We need all ACND alumni and friends to come to visit, ask about how to give time and expertise to the school and if possible give of your treasure to help the school continue to modernize for the future. One specific way for our alumni and friends to help us is to participate in the GIVE MIAMI DAY. On November 19th The Miami Foundation will hold its annual GIVE MIAMI DAY. From 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM of the 19th, donations will be accepted on ACND’s behalf at www.acnd.net/GiveMiamiDay . Each donation will come directly to ACND. ACND can also qualify for matching donations by the Miami Foundation. Please participate and give generously. The minimum donation is $25.00. Remember it not the size of the donation as much as it is the number of donations given. Each member of our ACND FAMILY, parents, students, faculty, administration, friends and alumni must work together to continue to improve our school culture both inside and outside of our school. Seniors were accepted into prestigious colleges and universities throughout the country including: University of Miami, University of Florida, Georgetown University, Florida International University, University of Central Florida, Palm Beach Atlantic, Bethune-Cookman University, University of Dubuque, Langston University, Florida Memorial University, Florida State University, St. John's University, Boston University, Brandeis University, Villanova University, University of San Francisco, and Stetson University. We asked the 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorians to share some information about themselves and offer some words of advice to the Class of 2016: Daniel Briz (Valedictorian, 5.13 GPA) – Daniel is studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Florida. He chose the school based on the experiences shared by his older siblings (both ACND Alums) who also studied engineering. Daniel chose his course of study because he is very interested in electronics and is good at math. His favorite club was Drama, and community service project, HungerFest that helped him realize that our attitudes towards the homeless need to change. His years at ACND helped Daniel know how to be a part of a family and get along with people from different cultures. If he could change anything about his experience, Daniel said that he wishes he had gotten to know people sooner. He hopes to return to see sporting events and support the schoolby donating. Daniel advises students to not give any less than his/her best, and work to the fullest potential. Ivan Brenes (Salutatorian, 4.88 GPA) – Ivan is studying Computer Science at Florida International University. Although he had his sights set on attending the University of Central Florida, he made the decision to attend a local school due to his family’s financial limitations. Ivan’s favorite club was Chess and he participated every year. His favorite teachers were Mr. Foster and Coach Magner who made P.E. and Health really fun. Like Daniel, his favorite community service project was HungerFest. Ivan advises students, “never lose your path” and to take SAT and ACT classes to qualify for Florida Bright Futures scholarships. Ivan said that he wishes he had joined more clubs. He plans to return often to ACND and support projects in any way he can. Ivan feels that ACND brings everyone together as a true family and everyone will continue to support each other long after graduation. Keyanna Francois (Salutatorian, 4.81 GPA) – Keyanna is studying Biological Sciences at Florida State University. She said that ACND instilled in her an appreciation for math and science, so much so that she wishes to continue studying these subjects throughout her college career. Her favorite activities were choir and summer camp counseling, and her favorite teachers, Ms. Medovaya and Ms. Love. Like Daniel and Ivan, her favorite community service project was HungerFest. She said that by giving back to her immediate community, she became inspired to help change the world. Keyanna feels that her experiences at ACND helped her to become less timid and help her conquer whatever she puts her mind to. 2015 School Year Highlights. This year’s Summer Knights Camp was a great success thanks to Mrs. Dominique, Ms. Lindsay, Coach Magner, assistant coaches, and counselors.
The visual and performing arts camp provided exciting hands-on art activities in the morning and singing and performing lessons in the afternoon. Each week the students visited neighborhood arts organizations further enhancing their appreciation of the arts. Thanks to the New World Center (home of the New World Symphony), Perez Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art, and the de la Cruz Collection for providing fantastic (and free) learning experiences. In July, six students along with Principal Douglas Romanik and new Campus Minister, Mr. Asher Haririchi attended a mission trip to Bonita Springs with the Christian Brothers. They assisted with the running of a summer camp for poor migrant families.
A Knights welcome to Br. Terence M. Connolly, CFC who is our new Director of Advancement and Admissions! Br. Connolly has been a Christian Brother for 47 years. He has served as both a teacher and Principal, and since 2006, has worked at Migrant Ministry in Bonita Springs.
At the end of July, some of our students participated in a work day at Holy Family. The students also helped transport furniture from St. James to Holy Family for the PreK and PreSchool.
Deanna Ordaz (9th grade) and Seniyah Antoine (7th grade) received the Monsignor Vincent Kelly and Archbishop Favalora Scholarships. The scholarship funds are used for tuition assistance. Deanna’s favorite subject is English and she has four cousins who attend ACND. Seniyah’s preferred subjects are English and Math and she hopes to become an entrepreneur who owns several businesses.

Students in the sports camp enjoyed activities that helped improved their skills in basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and more. Each week ended with an awards ceremony.
2015 School Year Highlights. Five Seniors are POSSE scholarship semi-finalists: Esperanza Cadena, Briana Gaspard, Danielle Antoine, Sabrina Monestime, and Styve Mbuyi. POSSE looks for students who have been positive contributors to their schools and communities, and have demonstrated leadership ability, communication, and team building skills. In 2013, ACND graduate Jennifer Ann Lamy received the Posse Foundation Scholarship -- a four-year fully paid tuition scholarship. She began attending Mount Holyoke College in Boston, Massachusetts in the Fall of 2014 where she is studying architecture. In 2012, ACND graduate Jessica Blanchard also received this scholarship and is currently a senior at the University of Pennsylvania.
In September, ACND students hosted a group of students from Colegio Cardenal Newman, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Colegio Stella Maris, Montevideo, Uruguay and accompanied them to the ACTION Student Leadership Workshop held in St. John’s, Florida. Students from schools operated or staffed by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America and Latin America gathered to celebrate the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers. The workshop focused on leadership development, advocacy, community building, and communication among the schools. A group of Seniors helped with the construction of the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami’s #PopeFrancisHouse in partnership with the Archdiocese of Miami. Construction began on the Liberty City home in September on the same day that local pilgrims were making their way to see Pope Francis in Cuba. As part of their Social Justice studies, the group is taking part in field trips that will incorporate the Corporal Works of Mercy such as: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, and visit the sick and imprisoned.
The ACND Knights for Life Group is holding various fundraisers to help assist with travel costs related to the National March for Life in Washington D.C. on January 22, 2016. To assist, email Ms. Bruni Egan (ACND Theology Teacher and Knights for Life Moderator) at began@acnd.net.

In October, the Seniors attended a Senior Conference Day held at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus. Students had an opportunity to engage directly with the college community along with the option of attending special presentations gave a clear overview of speciďŹ c new programs and job outlook opportunities.
At the Homecoming Game held on October 10th, the Knights defeated Miami Country Day 28-0. Honored for their commitment to the football team and this game were: James Ney Joseph, Sam Kattura, Marc Raymond, Aaron Ashe and Leopold Evariste. From September 25th to 27th, the Class of 1965 celebrated its’ 50th Reunion beginning with a “Day at the Races” and Icebreaker Social on Friday; followed by a NDA Marriott Luncheon and Dinner Dance at ACND on Saturday; and concluding with a Marriott Breakfast on Sunday. The 12th Annual Hall of Fame that took place on Saturday, April 11th at the Miami Shores Country Club, celebrated the achievements of illustrious group of inductees who have served as exemplary models of community leadership. Frances Aldrich Sevilla-Sacasa ’74 serves as Chief Executive Officer of Banco Itau International, a Miami-based international subsidiary of Banco Itau. Judy O’Connor ’72 has been a practicing CPA for more than 25 years in the South Florida community and assists her diverse client base in all aspects of tax compliance at a local, state and federal level. Peterson Family –Phil Peterson, who recently passed away, was the founder and owner of Peterson’s Harley-Davidson which has grown from a modest single man operation, into a successful enterprise. ACND English Teacher, Beth Love sent us an article in the Latin Times that was later shared on the school Facebook page. The popular post led to some Q&A with alumna, Marya Khalil who became President and CEO of her family’s company, VI Peel (Culver City, CA) following the sudden passing of her father. She is committed to keep her father’s legacy blooming. Where did you go to school following graduation from ACND and what did you study? After graduating, I moved to New York City to study Film and Journalism at NYU. I have no idea how my Middle Eastern Doctor dad let me get away with that one, but I’m glad he let me do what I love! The night before I left, we had lost electricity because of a hurricane and I had to pack in the dark! I was so scared about moving so far, that I started doubting my decision. It was a personal challenge since I was a sheltered 17 year old girl, but now I feel fortunate I got that opportunity to grow. Following University graduation, did you immediately start working for your father’s company, or did you work somewhere else first? If so, what was your position? When I first graduated from NYU, I started an internship with Deco Drive on WSVN Miami. Following that internship, I started working full time running my father’s private aesthetic practice in Miami Beach. I pretty much did everything there, but my official title was Practice Administrator. I was the office manager, the receptionist, the food delivery service, the DJ, the patient consultant (which often included some hand holding), and I did some minor bookkeeping too. Since 2010, when you started working at VI Peel, what positions did you have prior to becoming President? In 2010, I moved to Los Angeles (the company’s headquarters) because my dad desperately needed my help -- the business was being severely mismanaged without his knowledge. I eagerly agreed because I’ve always loved a little adventure. I started as a Customer Service Representative and was eventually trained on our accounting platform. I learned about HR and developed relationships with our vendors. However, my title never changed although I took on more and more responsibility. That’s what happens when your father is your boss! In 2012, I graciously became Vice President of the company - my dad taught me everything I know. What are some of the challenges and the rewards of working for a family-owned business? Working for a family owned business can definitely be an uphill battle. My father was, let’s say, very passionate, and honestly I’m not even sure he knew what HR stood for. There were many times I wanted to quit because when you work with family, emotion is always involved. It’s extremely hard to disconnect the two and, in business, it is a crucial skill to remember that “nothing is personal.” Of course, it’s wonderful to share your fervor and love of your business with your family because there are few people who will fight as hard for it. That’s why working with my sister Farah has been such a joy; she is dedicated, sharp and very motivated. I hope Samara (the youngest) will become a dermatologist and be our medical director one day. However, she is free to choose her own path - cough cough! You mentioned in the Latin Times article, how your father wanted to find a medical solution to help you with your acne. Can you talk about the beginnings of what is now the company you run? I started developing acne when I was around 14. As many teens know, it can be difficult emotionally. My father hated seeing me suffer and he made it his goal to create something to make me confident again. He studied chemical peels extensively. At the time he also had a private practice so he had a slew of patients waiting for something to make them look younger and feel better about themselves. He started his quest in 2003. At first the product was called the “Kalil Peel” and it was only available on a very small scale and in his office. In 2005 he incorporated his company, Kalil Medical Products. That was really when work started on commercializing the VI Peel. We have seen steady growth since then! We are available in over 2500 offices in the USA and 15 countries worldwide. What advice would you give to teenagers who lack self-confidence due to acne or any other common issue? Stay Positive. As they always say, “this too shall pass” and you are never alone! Acne is very common in our teenage years, and it tends to calm down after high school. First and foremost, get professional medical treatment. I still get acne, but the difference is now it’s controlled. I don’t stress out about it as much because there are so many worse things that could be affecting me. Name some fond ACND memories? There are so many fond memories and it feels like it was yesterday! Homecoming and Prom were always the highlights of my year. I was even Prom Princess in my junior year. Cheerleading was what I lived for! I loved my team mates, watching football games, and going to away games especially when the band joined us. Of course being Vice President in my senior year will always be memorable. I was always shy and it got me out of my comfort zone, and taught me how to become a leader.

Alum Spotlight Marya Khalil ‘05 (Continued) Name some favorite teachers? I loved all the teachers and would hate to leave anyone out because I really didn’t have a favorite! However, here are a few: Mrs. Medovaya, Mrs. Sklaroff, Mrs. Cofresi, Sister Rosa, Mrs. Love, Brother Hall, Ms. Miller, Mr. Yeash, Mr. Goodall, Mr. Strode. I had a French teacher who I adored, but can’t remember her name. She really got me to love French and I learned the language quickly - my dad was very impressed! You mentioned in the Latin Times article how your parents emphasized the importance of education. Can you speak about why they wanted their children in Catholic School? The reason why they sent me to Catholic school is because it’s the best value for a solid education. They felt it would make us well rounded. Both my parents went to Catholic School as well so they felt that their children would have the best guidance there. For elementary school I attended St Joseph’s Catholic School. It is no longer open which breaks my heart. I have the fondest memories there and am still friends with many who I went to school with. It was always a place I looked forward to going to and there, I always felt at home. How do you feel that your Catholic education has shaped who you are today? My Catholic Education made me dedicated, honest, and grateful. I think having the Catholic influence throughout my life really made me a more rounded, understanding person. My Catholic education is definitely a major reason I am as strong as I am today. Marya has two sisters who attended ACND. Farah Khalil graduated in 2007. After receiving her undergraduate degree in economics at The University of Miami, she attended a three year law school program at Southwestern University in Los Angeles. She is now an attorney who practices privately and works for VI Peel. Samara Khalil attended ACND for one year but graduated from Monsignor Pace High School. She is now a Pre-Med student at UCLA in Los Angeles. Wesley Alcegaire '12 recently signed with Bowling Green State University Athletics.
