Introduction

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) offers a wide variety of opportunities for educators to earn Act 48 hours and continuing professional education (CPE) course credits . CPE course credits can be used to fulfill the requirements for obtaining Level II certification, Master’s Equivalency, and Act 48 .

Each three-credit CPE course counts as 90 Act 48 hours . CPE courses are offered annually during the fall, spring, and summer academic semesters .

Fees, Payment, and Registration

Tuition Fees

Compared to what most universities charge, the AIU offers a very cost-effective option for educators to earn continuing education credits and Act 48 hours .

The tuition fee for each three-credit CPE course is $399, however the fee is $499 for each of the six courses required for the ESL program specialist certification . Fees include course registration, Canvas LMS usage, auto-transfer of credits and hours to PERMS, and an e-Letter of Completion .

Payment Procedures

The AIU accepts MasterCard or VISA credit cards for payment of CPE course tuition; we cannot accept American Express at this time . You will be required to enter a credit card number upon registration to confirm your enrollment in a CPE course When registration closes for that course, we do not charge your credit card until we confirm the course has met the minimum enrollment of three participants and will run as scheduled If minimum enrollment is not met, the course will be canceled, and we will notify you via email the next business day . If your credit card is declined upon processing, we will proceed to enroll you in the course as scheduled and will notify you by email to arrange a time to complete your tuition payment

 DO NOT send your credit card account information to the AIU by email. The program coordinator will contact you to arrange a time to complete your tuition payment .

Course Registration

The AIU’s annual schedule of CPE course registration dates and academic semesters is as follows:

You can access the AIU’s course catalog through the Frontline Education online registration system . Users must establish their own Frontline account with a username and password prior to registering

 Please save your username and password in a secure location so you can access the system to manage your user profile, access our online course catalog, and register for future CPE courses

CPE Course Credits & Act 48 Hours

Instructors complete their final review of all coursework for each participant and then submit a final, graded roster to the AIU’s professional education coordinator within a week of the course’s end date Upon our receipt of the final roster, the AIU closes the course is closed and marks its completion in Frontline and transfer CPE course credits and Act 48 hours to your PERMS record .

The AIU will also issue an e-Letter of Completion and send it to the email address on file in your Frontline user account We recommend that you download the e-Letter of Completion and save it with your other professional documents .

Are you applying for a Level II certificate and need an official transcript of courses? After you complete your last course through the AIU, you can order your official transcript at aiu3 net/transcripts . Please note, the AIU charges a $10 preparation fee that can be paid via our secure online payment button We will send your official transcript directly to the PA Department of Education Bureau of Teacher Certification — and send a copy to you at the email address affiliated with your Frontline user account PDE staff will match your transcript with your Level II application in TIMS You may start your TIMS application at any time

Transcripts are a complete record of all CPE courses completed through the AIU . Please note that the AIU cannot validate any other CPE courses completed through another intermediate unit .

Q. I don’t live in Allegheny County. Am I allowed to enroll in AIU CPE courses?

A Yes! Educators across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are welcome to enroll in AIU CPE courses for the same cost as educators living in Allegheny County .

Q. What is the cost of a CPE course?

A The tuition fee for each three-credit CPE course is $399*

*The tuition fee for each course in the ESL program specialist’s certification program is $499; the program consists of six courses

Q. How many graduate course credits will I earn for every CPE course I complete?

A Every three-credit CPE (and ESL) course simultaneously counts as three graduate course credits AND 90 Act 48 hours .

Q. How can I request a transcript from the AIU, and have it sent to PDE?

A Visit aiu3 .net/transcripts for more information . The AIU charges a $10 preparation fee . Your official transcript is a complete record of all CPE courses completed through the AIU .

Q. How long does it take to complete a CPE course?

A The duration of a three-credit CPE course is typically three-to-four weeks Our CPE courses are conducted virtually through Canvas LMS in an asynchronous format to allow busy, working educators time to complete coursework at their own pace

Q. When will I receive my credits, hours, and e-Letter of Completion after the CPE course ends?

A The timeframe for closing a CPE or ESL course is between one to four weeks . As soon as the AIU receives the final graded roster from the course instructor(s) we will process CPE course credits and Act 48 hours for each educator who successfully completed the course .

Course credits and hours will be transferred directly to the educator’s PERMS record An e-Letter of Completion is sent via email to each educator, usually within a week after course credits are transferred to PERMS . If you do not receive an e-Letter of Completion within two weeks of the course closure, please contact the program coordinator, Linda Muller at linda.muller@aiu3.net .

Any outstanding CPE or ESL course tuition payments must be settled before the AIU can transfer credits and hours to the educator’s PERMS record and email an e-Letter of Completion to the educator
