Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothians (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was redesigned to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chompers” made its debut.

With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking. Allegheny College is included among the 100 “best values” in liberal arts colleges in the nation, according to Kiplinger’s, a private financial advising company. Kiplinger’s is the latest national publication to include Allegheny among the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. Allegheny College is also featured in Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges, an annual guidebook profiling North America’s top institutions for undergraduate education; Washington Monthly’s “2011 College Rankings: What Can Colleges Do for the Country?,” which ranks Allegheny College No. 36 of the top 252 liberal arts colleges in the nation; and The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2012, which profiles the country’s best and most interesting colleges and universities. Allegheny is also one of 40 colleges included in Loren Pope’s Colleges That Change Lives and is featured in Harvard Schmarvard: Getting Beyond the Ivy League to the College That Is Best for You and Peterson’s Competitive Colleges, 400 Colleges That Attract the Best and the Brightest. In addition to publishing its own rankings, Kiplinger gave readers the opportunity to vote on which private colleges represent the best value and Allegheny closed third across the nation in the readers’ poll. We’re proud of Allegheny’s tradition, beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.

ROBERTSON ATHLETIC COMPLEX Robertson Field is located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex. The field, which opened in 1992, has played host to the 1994, 1995 and 1996 NCAA Division III Regional Softball Championships, as well as the 2004 and 2008 NCAC Softball Tournaments. The newly-installed permanent outfield fence sits at 200 feet to left and right field and 210 feet to center field. The facility includes a batting cage, which sits behind the field. The softball complex also features 25-foot long dugouts, a 25-foot high backstop, a full-field underground watering system, a full-field tarpaulin, an 8x15-foot electronic scoreboard, a fully-enclosed press box, a sound system, spacious locker rooms and a fully-enclosed permanent fence. Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Led by tri-captains Beth Giese, Arlie Sears, and Linda Weber, Allegheny recorded a victory in the program’s first-ever home game early in the 1977 season with a 31-8 win against Robert Morris University. Robertson Athletic Complex also includes the 3,000-seat Frank B. Fuhrer Field; one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; 12 lighted tennis courts; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Since coming to Allegheny in the fall of 2003, Sandra Sanford has revitalized the softball program, leading the Gators to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference and back onto the national scene. During Sanford’s tenure, Allegheny has claimed three NCAC Tournament titles, two regular season conference championships, and has gone on to the NCAA Division III Tournament on three seprate occasions. Despite enduring a pair of injury-plagued years in a recent slide, she has guided the Gators to a 149-149 overall record against some of the best competition from around the region and nation. Allegheny has remained competitive in NCAC play (65-47) including 11-3 records and regular season championships in 2004 -- her first year -- and 2008. In addition to being NCAC Coach of the Year in 2006, Sanford has mentored three NCAC Newcomers of the Year (‘06, ‘08, ‘09), two NCAC Pitchers of the Year (‘04, ‘06) and two NCAC Players of the Year (‘07, ‘08). She also had eight players named to the AllCentral Region Team.

the 1995 Big East Conference championship and the title game of the NCAA Regional Tournament. Sanford was named to the All-Northeast Region First Team in 1995. During her tenure with the Gators, Sanford has served on many national committees, including serving as a facilitator for the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Leadership conference, where she traveled to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston and Dallas working with studentathletes. She is also a member of the Regional ranking committee for the Central Region, and is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, earning her One-Star Master Coaches Certificate from the National Fastpitch Coaches College. Additionally she is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA).

Highlighting Sanford’s tenure are three conference tournament titles in four years; 2004, 2005 and most recently in 2007. The Gators took the 2004 tourney as the top-seed before upsetting No. 1 seeds Ohio Wesleyan in the 2005 finals and Denison in 2007. With the wins, Allegheny advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th, 14th and 15th times in school history. Prior to her arrival at Allegheny, she served as an assistant under legendary and Hall of Fame coach Donna Newberry at Muskingum from 1999-2001, helping the Muskies win the NCAA Division III National Championship in her final season. In 2000, the Muskingum staff was selected as the Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year, while in 2001 Sanford and company were selected as the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. As the hitting coach, Sanford helped Muskingum set what was then an NCAA Division III record with 47 home runs in 2000, which they topped the following year with 48. In the summer of 2001, she had the honor of being the head coach of the Coast-to-Coast softball team, an all-star team that traveled to the Netherlands and Belgium for international play. Before working at Muskingum, Sanford was an assistant coach at Bates College during the 1997-1998 academic year and was also an assistant coach at Teikyo-Post University for the 1996 season. Sanford graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1995, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in human development and family relations. As a senior captain with the Huskies, she led the team to

COACHING STAFF / INDOOR FACILITIES JAMIE COLLEY Jamie Colley is in her first season as assistant coach with the Allegheny softball program. Colley begins her first postgraduate coaching stint after serving as an assistant coach for the USA Athletes International softball team during the summer of 2011. A two-time captain at John Carroll, Colley paced the Blue Streaks to the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference championship, while helping to lead JCU to four consecutive postseason appearances. In 2011, Colley was honored with the John Carroll Athletic Association Sportsmanship Award. In addition to her athletic prowess, Colley’s dedication to the game has already included several coaching posts, including assistant coach of the Ohio Explosive 12U travel team and coach for the Breckville Bee’s 12U club.

SOFTBALL AUXILIARY FACILITIES One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for year-round indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

Colley earned a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences from John Carroll in May 2011 after majoring in sociology with a minor in communications. For four years she served on the Student Union Programming Board, while participating in numerous clubs and organizations on campus.

JENNIFER WARDWELL Jennifer Wardwell is in her ninth season as pitching coach for the Gators’ softball program. With 24 years of pitching and coaching experience at the high school and college level, Wardwell has brought a wealth of knowledge to the Allegheny campus. In her first spring donning the Blue and Gold, Allegheny paced the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in ERA and strikeouts. During Wardwell’s seven seasons on the Gator staff, Allegheny’s pitching unit has maintained a consistent presence among the league leaders. In 2004 and 2006, Wardwell helped guide Giannina Coccaro to NCAC Pitcher of the Year accolades. Wardwell graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1997. During her college tenure, the Huskies captured two Big East Championships and was the 1994 NCAA Regional Championship runner up. Following the season, Wardwell was selected to the All Big-East team. Over the past eight years, Wardwell has spent the winter months working with pitchers and running camps for local athletes while she has also served as a clinician at camps throughout New England, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Previously serving as an Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Development at Allegheny, Wardwell is currently a Regional Advancement Officer in the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development.

SEVEN-TIME NCAC CHAMPIONS

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK Joining Nealer on the Gators’ pitching staff is freshman Amelia Pennington, a two-time All-Conference selection from Maine. Pennington, who possesses a good change-up, will be vying for innings against returners Brittany Rung and Natalie Persicano. Rung has served as the team’s top arm over the last two years, but her progress has been slowed by injuries. Persicano is the only left-hander on the unit and has looked strong in preseason. Allegheny, which posted the highest ERA in team history last year, could see a quick return-to-form as one of the region’s top pitching outfits, while making things significantly easier for an offense that looks to be adding more pop.

There is an anticipation surrounding this year’s edition of Allegheny softball, and that fervor for opening day has radiated throughout the team’s locker room. With eight returning starters and an outstanding rookie class, the Gators are staring at an opportunity to deliver one of the nation’s top turnarounds and provide another defining statement for one of the most historically rich programs in Division III. Allegheny, which has authored the seventh-most wins in NCAA postseason history, has been plagued by a myriad of injuries and bad fortune since back-to-back 20+ win seasons in 2008 and 2009. Last year, the team endured its most trying campaign ever, but the rough patch could fuel a fantastic headline this spring as the team and coaching staff begin the season with unbridled enthusiasm and brimming confidence. “There’s a really good energy around us right now,” noted head coach Sandra Sanford. “The girls are feeling the excitement. Our practices have been going very well, and the team is hungry to turn things around.” Any program can talk about a turnaround, but the 2012 Gators have the right ingredients to orchestrate a significant move in the league standings. For starters, Allegheny boasts tremendous leadership. It starts with senior captain Felicia Gowanlock, who is set to start for the third straight season at catcher. Gowanlock is strong defensively, sets a great example and is well-respected by her teammates. Leading the team in fielding percentage for the second consecutive year, she proved to be the ultimate workhorse as she sat behind the dish for every inning of the 2011 season.

Junior Nicole Rodi serves as the cornerstone for the Gator infield. An NCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention selection last year, Rodi paced the team in runs batted in hitting out of the five-hole and will be returning to fill the starting role at third base. The rest of the infield could be filled with unfamiliar names, although three potential firstyear starters is further evidence of the promise in this year’s rookie crop. Sadie Stuart and Marina Scarantino will likely anchor the middle of the infield. Freshmen with a tremendous amount of high-level prep experience, Stuart was a Western New York First Team All-Star and Scarantino was the 2011 WPIAL Championship Most Valuable Player. The players have been praised for their quick acclimation to the college game, while Scarantino spent the winter shouldering responsibilities as the starting point guard for the Allegheny women’s basketball team. First base, which was covered admirably last season by sophomore Halea Hayden, could be filled by freshman Leah Herlocker, an improving talent with a big bat. The infield possibilities for the Gators could also result in a drastic change in the outfield, where everyone can expect to see a lot of movement early in the calendar. Hayden may move her talents to right or left field. Earning NCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors as a rookie, she led the conference in on-base percentage while ranking in the top five in slugging, stolen bases, and batting average. Hayden was easily one of the league’s biggest surprises, and although she hit almost exclusively out of the lead-off spot last year, the second-year lefty could fill any spot in the lineup. Anchoring the middle of the outfield is Stephanie Fort. The team’s starting shortstop the past two seasons, Fort’s move to the outfield is a potentially great switch. If Scarantino can deftly handle the duties at short, the outfield will get a significant boost behind Fort’s speed and powerful arm. Fort, who has earned All-Conference honors the past two years, reached base safely in 19 consecutive games to start

“Felicia provides us with focused leadership,” said Sanford. “She leads a great group of upperclassmen who are proud of our structure, and proud of how hard they work. The coaching staff sets high expectations and our athletes have embraced that ethic.” While the Allegheny players are philosophically ready to climb the conference ladder, the team also showcases more talent. Freshman right-handed pitcher Caitlin Nealer is one of the program’s top prospects and leads a strong first-year class. Nealer, who led Valley high school to the Pennsylvania state championship, has great command on the mound. A high-level competitor who can be just as deadly with the bat, Nealer throws hard but her potential to dominate lies in her outstanding movement and an exceptional change-of-pace in her pitches.

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK / IN THE COMMUNITY in both the infield and outfield, has manufactured numerous multi-hit games and is one of the team’s most improved players. “One of things we are most excited about as a coaching staff is the challenge in building the right lineup,” said Sanford. “Everyone will have a chance to earn playing time and we hope to be able to identify the right spots in the order early in the season.” This year will mark the earliest start to a season since the program blasted onto the scene in 1977. Although the team has a shortened preseason, the focus emanating from the preseason workouts signals a group that is ready to build upon the program’s existing legacy and anxious for the season’s first pitch.

Caitlin Nealer the 2011 slate. She is equipped with a terrific combination of speed and power and has been a mainstay among the league’s offensive leaders. The remaining outfield spot will be filled by a combination of sophomore Maureen Pallone, junior Sophie Katz, and freshman Shannen Segiel. Pallone, who started all 28 games in left field, delivered some key hits last season and swings a strong bat. Katz, a two-year starter

“We talk a lot about tradition,” added Sanford. “There’s a feeling that we owe it to the players and coaches who have come before us to maintain a certain standard. We’ve talked at length about respecting what this program is about, and our readiness to re-focus from all angles.” Allegheny opens the 2012 spring campaign on Friday, March 2 against reigning AMCC champions D’Youville. The Gators will be playing four games in two days as part of the season-opening Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.

2011 GATORS HONORED WITH NATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Allegheny’s softball program was recognized for its seasonlong effort partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) announced the recipients of this year’s NADIIIAA/JOSTENS Community Service Awards at last week’s NCAA Convention in Indianapolis. The Gators were recipients of an Award of Merit in the on-going project category. There were three categories, with Salisbury University (one-time project) and Wittenberg University (array of projects) joining Pitt-Bradford (on-going) as category winners. Allegheny was one of just nine schools across the nation to be honored by the NADIIIAA for outstanding community service during the 2010-11 academic year. On Thursday, April 28, 2011, the Allegheny softball team capped a season-long effort with a special game dedicated to the MakeA-Wish Foundation. Throughout the spring campaign, the Gators raised money to fund a wish for a local seven-year-old with cystic fibrosis to go on a Disney Cruise. With the competing teams donning special Make-A-Wish jerseys, Allegheny’s wish recipient was in attendance as the final check was presented by the team as part of a ceremony prior to the afternoon’s first pitch. While Amanda Downey ‘11 proposed the idea, coaches and teammates quickly rallied with their support. On-line traffic provided the biggest financial boost, although the team conducted several 50/50 raffles, sold t-shirts, and passed around a collection can at

home games. Breaking into groups of two, softball team members conducted “dorm storms” where they collected spare change from the residents living on campus. The team’s initial goal was to raise $3,600, but at the end of the season their efforts had totaled over $6,700. The NADIIIAA is an association comprised of athletics administrators from the nearly 450 institutions and 40 conferences competing at the NCAA Division III level. A primary purpose of the NADIIIAA is to encourage the continued development of athletics programs focused on the student-athlete and based on sound educational philosophy, while the NADIIIAA awards program is intended to recognize the many contributions Division III studentathletes regularly make to their campuses and local communities.

ALL-AMERICA / HALL OF FAME TARA DICKERT Graduated: 1996; Inducted: 2008 From 1992-95, the Gators posted 122 wins with two trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series, and a key catalyst of those squads was thirdbaseman Tara Dickert. Allegheny placed sixth in the nation in 1993 before bettering their finish with a fourth place showing in 1995. Sandwiched in the middle of those two years was an NCAA Regional appearance and a season where Dickert set Gator single-season records with 25 doubles and 110 total bases. In 1995, she went on to set three more Allegheny records with 49 games played, 168 atbats, and 72 base-hits. During the ‘94 campaign, she finished second all-time with 67 hits, a .489 batting average, and a .803 slugging percentage, while ranking second with 109 total bases in ‘95. For her career, she also holds the all-time Gator records for at-bats, hits, doubles, and total bases while ranking second in batting average. Her name also appears in the career top 10 for seven other Allegheny records. Dickert’s name even graces the NCAA Division III record book, with her 25 doubles in ‘94 tying for fourth all-time in a single year.

SHELLEY BROWN Graduated: 1996; Inducted: 2011 Shelley Brown was a two-sport standout in softball and basketball for the Gators. She was a threetime All-America at pitcher for Allegheny, and during her four years the Gators never finished below fifth in the NCAA, including a second in 1988. Brown was Allegheny’s all-time leader with an .810 career winning percentage and a career ERA of 0.75. Her 16 shutouts in 1986 are an Allegheny season best. Brown also held the record for sacrifices in a season (28) and career (55). Additionally, she owned the second most wins in a season (24) and career (77) in school history. During her four years, the Gators had an amazing record of 130-31. Brown also was a second team All-NCAC honoree in basketball in 1988 and ’89. She helped lead the Gators to four straight NCAC Championships, and she was a member of the 1985-86 squad that set the school record with 26 wins. Brown was the 1988-89 Female Athlete of the Year.

JEN LORENZEN Graduated: 1996; Inducted: 2011 Jen Lorenzen is a fixture in the Gators’ record book. Ranking first on the school’s all-time charts for homeruns (27), slugging percentage (.725) and bases on balls (76), she also currently ranks second in total bases (321), hits (187) and doubles (41). In addition to her oustanding offensive production, Jen guided Allegheny to back-to-back NCAC regular season championships in 1998 and 1999. One of the most feared hitters in the region, Jen earned All-East Region plaudits in her final three years of eligibility. In 1999, she batted .481 and belted nine homeruns en route to NCAC Player of the Year honors. At the end of the season she was named to the NCAA Division III All-American team. Owner of an impressive .422 career batting average, Jen earned First Team All-Conference accolades in Allegheny’s first three seasons as a member of the NCAC. In each of those first three seasons, she led the conference in homeruns.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is made up of 10 academically selective colleges and universities - Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and the College of Wooster. The NCAC has produced 63 NCAA Team Championships across all sports since its inception in 1983. NCAC softball has enjoyed a reputation as one of the strongest leagues at the NCAA Division III level. No school in the conference has been able to rival Allegheny’s illustrious history which includes 15 NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 trips to the NCAA World Series, 45 NCAA playoff wins, 22 All-Americans, and a national runner-up finish (1988). The Gators rank as the seventh winningest program in the history of Division III. Denison also boasts a strong history with four NCAA appearances and a spot in the 2008 NCAA Regional Championship. Wittenberg has earned two NCAA bids in the last 10 seasons while newcomer DePauw earned a fifth-place finish at the 2010 and 2011 NCAA World Series. The Tigers have made five consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament field and led the nation in victories in 2008. Since the NCAC began sponsoring softball as a championship sport in 1998, four different teams have claimed regular-season conference championships. Denison leads the way in that grouping with eight titles (2001-03, 2006-07, 2009-11), while Allegheny has captured four (1998, 1999, 2004, 2008), Ohio Wesleyan three (2004-05. 2010) and Wittenberg one (2000). The NCAC instituted the conference tournament in 2001 to determine the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red have earned five tournament titles (2001-02, 2006, 2008-09), followed by Allegheny with three (2004-05, 2007).
