Mellon Pool was built in 1969 as part of the Richard King Mellon Recreation building. It was dedicated on October 16, 1970 to Richard King Mellon, who was chairman of the Board of Mellon National Bank and Trust Co. The original structure included the swimming pool, diving well, six handball and squash courts, as well as classrooms and faculty offices. In 1997, the Mellon building become part of the David V. Wise Center Sports Complex. The home for Allegheny men’s and women’s swimming and diving comes equipped with a six-lane, 25 yard swimming pool, with a separate diving well. It also holds approximately 550 spectators in the main grandstands. The first ever NCAA Division III national championships (pictured below) was hosted by Allegheny College at Mellon Pool on Mar. 19-22, 1975. The Gators would place ninth overall, while Chico State would capture the inaugural championship, with Johns Hopkins placing second.

Kumbier enters his fourth year as the head coach for the Gators, and his sixth year with the program. After numerous school records have fallen during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, Kumbier has the Gators in prime position to rise among the ranks of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in the immediate future. A pair of new program standards were set in the 2015-16 season. On the men’s side, freshman Matthew Nardozzi clocked in at 4:07.59 in the 400 IM at the Kenyon “Fast Chance” Invitational to establish a new school record, breaking the 1989 mark set by Patrick Stewart. A 25-year-old record fell in the women’s three-meter dive on Jan. 16 against Case Western Reserve, as Erica Salizzoni scored a 479.00 across her 11 attempts to top two-time national champion Melissa Moody’s score of 471.60, which once stood as an NCAA Division III record. The 2014-15 season saw three school records fall on the women’s side, as the Gators set over 100 personal bests under Kumbier’s leadership. Freshman Julianne Reed set a pair of program marks at the 2015 NCAC Championships, posting a school record 58.67 in the 100 back as part of the 400-medley relay in the prelims. Reed would later swim the individual 100 fly in 58.10 during the finals, setting another record in the process. A week later at the 2015 Kenyon “Fast Chance” Meet, sophomore Megan Feeney would set a program mark in the 200 back, besting a near-20 year old record with a 2:04.80, setting the Gators’ third school record of the season. The 2011 graduate of NCAA perennial powerhouse Kenyon College has displayed considerable experience as both an athlete and coach, and his appointment continues to serve as a tremendous asset for the Gators’ burgeoning competitive spirit both in and out of the pool. In the spring of 2014 the men’s and women’s teams both earned College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-American team honors with both the men’s and women’s teams repeating during the fall of 2014 semester. During the 2013-14 season, Kumbier led the Gators to over 150 personal bests, leading a staff that procured four NCAA qualifying times or scores and the 2013-14 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Diving Coach of the Year in Fred Evanoff. In his four years at Allegheny, Kumbier has helped over 10 Gators achieve over 20 NCAA National qualifying marks, including Mirno Pasquali ’12 (200 back 1:49.54) and Brandon Intrieri ’13 (100 fly 49.45, 50 free 20.76) who, in the 2011-2012 season, earned spots at the national championships. That year Intrieri tacked on his third All-American honor with his 13th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Pasquali earned his spot in Indianapolis after logging a scalding 1:49.91 in the 200 back at the 2011-12 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) championships, finishing second while setting a new program record in the process. He then lowered it to 1:49.54 with a 16th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Most recently, Feeney’s 200 Back from the end of the season surpassed the NCAA qualifying mark when she eclipsed the record. In his time coaching at Allegheny, Kumbier has helped five Gators earn All-Conference performances while overall Kumbier has coached Gator student-athletes to over 425 personal bests during the past four seasons, with four athletes setting six new program records Additionally, Kumbier has spent the last three summers as a counselor for the Salo Swim Camp at the University of Southern California, home to the 2015 Men’s PAC-12 swimming and diving champions. In 2013, Kumbier was named the Head Coach-Counselor for the camps and has worked under Coach Salo and the Trojan staff and alongside Division I and Division III coaches and athletes, as well as national and international, elite swimmers and Olympians. At camps, Kumbier coaches 100-130 athletes per week, and has coached international campers from Russia, South Africa, Japan, England, India, Denmark and Italy. In 2012, Kumbier served as a counselor for the Wolverine Swim Camp in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he worked with over 200 athletes at Michigan’s facility, home of the 2013 Men’s Division I National Champions. Kumbier has also worked the Elite Breastroke and Comprehensive Camps at the Total Performance Camps in Gambier, Ohio, working with legendary Kenyon head coach Jim Steen. He also served three summers as an assistant swim coach at Ann Arbor Country Club from 2009 to 2011 to kick start his career. As an athlete, Kumbier was a five-time national qualifier who finished among the top eight at the NCAC Championships in the 200 breaststroke on three separate occasions, placing fourth in 2008 and 2011 while finishing among the top eight twice in the 100 breaststroke, placing as high as fifth. In 2011, he was presented with the Stephen E. Bennett Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the Kenyon senior who has consistently supported the program in devotion to training and competition. As a student, Kumbier majored in Mathematics with a focus on Abstract Algebra while also earning a minor in Studio Art. Kumbier earned CSCAA Academic All-American Honorable Mention

Fred Evanoff is in his 11th season as a member of the Allegheny College Swimming and Diving staff. He serves as the diving coach for both the men’s and women’s diving teams.

Kayla McCormick joined the Allegheny coaching staff in the summer of 2016. She arrived in Meadville from Minnesota State University, Mankato where she spent two years as a volunteer coach for the women’s swimming and diving program. She specialized in coaching sprint, freestyle, and butterfly, and helped design dry-land conditioning workouts for the entire team. The Mavericks sent a number of swimmers to the NCAA Division II Championships over the past two seasons, and had All-Americans in 2015 and 2016, the first two since the 2010-11 campaign. The Caledonia, Minnesota native swam collegiately at Division I University of Northern Iowa, where she was a four-year letter winner and team captain during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Twice she garnered Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete accolades, adding the Leadership and Service Award from the league in 2014 along with a nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. McCormick also collected a trio of honors in 2014 with the Lux Award and Women at Play Scholarship from Northern Iowa, as well as the MVC Presidential Academic Excellence Award. Recently, she received the Jean Freeman Scholarship by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and SUMMIT, which is given to one male and one female from each division of the NCAA. McCormick has worked the Bauerle Bulldog Swim Camp at the University of Georgia, and has previously coached novice and age group swimmers at Black Hawk Area Swim Team (BLAST) in Cedar Falls, Iowa from 2013-14. She served as a coach, instructor, and lifeguard for the Lakeville Family Swim School in Lakeville, Minnesota in 2012 and grew up swimming for the La Crosse, Wisconsin YMCA Wave swim team. McCormick graduated from Northern Iowa in 2014 with her Bachelor of Arts degree in movement and exercise science with a double emphasis in exercise science and sport psychology as well as a minor in coaching. She recently received her Master of Arts degree in sport and exercise psychology from MSU-Mankato.

boards.

Evanoff earned his second North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Diving Coach of the Year award during the 2013-14 season, leading a determined Allegheny diving squad to an impressive showing at the 2014 NCAC Championships. The Gators saw four top-five finishes in the one- and three-meter boards, including a pair of All-NCAC performances by Emily Capone ‘14, who finished second both

During the 2012-13 season, Evanoff mentored Capone to her third and fourth All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) honors at the NCAC Championships. Under his tutelage, the Allegheny women’s diving team gave the Gators a day one lead at the championships after the three-meter event. Voted the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Diving Coach of the Year, Evanoff began his coaching experience on the high school level. Since 2000 he served as the head diving coach at General McLane High School, Edinboro, Pa., and later moved on to the head swimming and diving coach position at General McLane. He also runs a diving clinic at Fairview High School through the Fairview Recreation Authority. Evanoff has seen his high school swimmers and divers compete on both the district and state levels, producing a women’s state diving champion in Pennsylvania in 2006. On the collegiate level Coach Evanoff has had conference winner Jayson Loeffert qualify to the Division III National Diving Meet. A resident of McKean, Pennsylvania, Evanoff is the owner of Evanoff Landscape Contracting and graduated from Penn State University in 1973 with an associate degree in ornamental nursery management.

One of the most dominant landmarks on Allegheny’s campus, the David V. Wise Center was completed in 1997. The main part of the facility is the sports forum located on the upper level. Its 27,000 feet of open floor space is used by the softball team and other intercollegiate programs for yearround indoor training, while a three-lane, 200-meter indoor running track is suspended above the playing surface. A 2,500 square foot weight room is located just off the sports forum. The training facility includes free weights, resistance lifting, stationary bicycles, and a plethora of the latest fitness machines. In addition, the Wise Center swimming natatorium is located on the same level to provide additional cross-training training opportunities, while the close proximity to the program’s sports medicine facility ensures timely and adequate coverage during all softball-related activities.

T

he North Coast Athletic Conference has had a rich and storied tradition in division III swimming and diving. Allegheny hosted the first ever NCAA division III men’s championships from March 19-22, 1975, that was won by Chico State. Since 1980, the NCAC has claimed the men’s team national championship as Kenyon University went on an unprecedented run of 31 consecutive national titles. No other men’s or women’s team in NCAA history -- any sport, any division -- have won as many consecutive titles. The Lords streak was broken in 2011, as NCAC rival Denison would claim the title after placing second seven times, repeating in 2012. The NCAC’s reign has been just as long on the women’s side as well. Kenyon would put together an astonishing streak of 17 consecutive NCAA team championships from 1984-2000. Once again, it was Denison that snapped the streak, claiming their first national championship in 2001. Since 2001, Kenyon has reclaimed the national championship six more times. Combined, the NCAC has won 56 of the 67 Division III national team titles in swimming and diving.

Allegheny has not been left out of the national championship scene. With five individual national champions and 12 top five team finishes, the Gators have contributed greatly to the dominance of the NCAC in Division III swimming Bold - Indicates NCAC School and diving.
