Hello and welcome to the 2018 Spring newsletter.

It’s an unexpected pleasure and honour to have the opportunity to introduce the newsletter again this year in my role as Interim Chief Executive of Eden Valley Hospice. This newsletter captures some of the special events of the past few months as well as introducing the plans for 2018.

First can I make a special plea for you to complete the form on page 18. In May new regulations come into force which govern the way we manage any information we hold about you, such as name, address and telephone number. The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) give you more control over how this information is managed and used. GDPR means you should be able to make choices about when and how we contact you, either by post, telephone or email. In future we need your explicit permission to keep your details on our database so we can send you this newsletter and other information about the hospice. So please complete the form and send or give it back to us.

It is always lovely to hear about the care provided within the hospice. Angela’s description of just one day shows the variety of things the nurses are dealing with and gives a little insight into some of the challenges when supporting both patients and their families. The commitment to providing excellent care is captured in the Patient Charter developed in 2017; a small

She shows why this has driven her to commit to a fundraising challenge.

It has been a great privilege to be able to come back to Eden Valley Hospice in an interim role whilst the Board of Trustees undertake the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive. It is a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic team of staff and volunteers both within the hospice building and across the shops and supporting external events; these are the people who create the spirit of the hospice and the excellent care it provides.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support and encourage you to continue to support Eden Valley Hospice in the future.

The home from home environment creates a relaxing atmosphere for patients and families with each room overlooking the beautiful walled garden.

Our Day Hospice provides care for up to 15 people a day, four days a week. Most days the sweet smell of freshly baked cakes fills the Day Hospice as patients, nurses and volunteers exchange stories about what has happened since they last met.

Our Family Support Team provides help and support to our patients, their families and their carers. They help to manage the challenges in front of many families, and help them to feel more resilient and able to face the future with courage, all in the strictest confidence.

24 Hours on our Adult In Patient Unit A lot happens in just 24 hours at Eden Valley Hospice. Angela Dobson, Adult Unit Clinical Sister, talks us through one story from one day at the hospice. All names have been changed.

“It’s Friday and there is a flurry of activity. This isn’t unusual, there is frequently an influx of referrals as the weekend approaches. Everything needs to be in place to avoid any unnecessary hiccups with admissions, discharges etc.

Showers are given, a long soak in the bath, late breakfast served, menus taken, medications given.

Doctors are busy reviewing patients, discussing symptoms, medications, treatments and worries before working with nursing staff to formulate plans of care or modify current ones.

A patient leaves for home just as the first admissions arrives. The new lady, Jane, is placed in the four bedded room and made comfortable; it quickly becomes apparent that this lady is more unwell than expected. A decision is made to move her to a different room once other patients have had chance to eat their meal.

A doctor and nurse head off to start admitting Jane, a process that cannot be rushed. Patients and loved ones need time to express themselves, articulate their needs and ensure it’s understood what’s important.

Jane is a young woman who is separated from her husband; they have a daughter who lived with Jane until very recently, she now lives with her father. Jane’s father arrived to ensure she was settled but could stay only briefly. Her husband was on the phone more than once, he struggled to comprehend the limited information which could be given and wondered what to tell his daughter.

The patient was nearing the end of her life, however she had many practical issues which needed addressing.

Her deterioration had been quick leaving no time for planning or preparation, she wanted to do what she could to provide for her daughter financially. Without a Will, any assets would go to her estranged husband, which was causing her great anxiety.

The doctor registered the importance of Jane’s wellbeing and sought permission for the hospice to contact a solicitor as a matter of urgency. It was now 4.50pm on a Friday, we spent some time phoning around until we found one who did not have the answer machine on ready for the weekend. After hearing the situation the receptionist relayed this to her colleague, although it was not his usual area the solicitor showed great empathy and said he could be at the hospice later in the evening. The team had to find a balance of making the pain tolerable whilst allowing Jane the capacity to understand the solicitor.

Jane’s daughter was brought to spend time with her mum before death. Staff sourced a Linus blanket and placed it on Jane’s bed. This was given to the little girl when her mum passed away. A nurse went to Jigsaw to source a memory box which was adapted as they are designed for an adult losing a child, not the other way round. Hand prints were taken for the child to look back on and treasure.

All of this was done before the patient passed away the following morning.

Whilst all this is happening the team continue to care for other patients and families, answering queries and buzzers, talking things through, planning, helping with personal care and activities of daily living, managing symptoms supporting other relatives right through the night.

Tomorrow will be a different day with new challenges and surprises”.

- Anna Beattie Later this year two intrepid fundraisers will travel more than 10,000 miles on an epic fundraising challenge. Anne Beattie explains why she will be taking on this epic challenge with Andy Jenkinson in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Cancer Research UK. “Andy has had friends and family who have required the care of the hospice and seen how effective its care is, the difference it makes to peoples lives. Then my mam was diagnosed with terminal cancer and after a few days she was sent home and although we were supported by district nurses, the family took the brunt of the care.

“The Mongol Rally is a race from Prague, to Ulan Ude in Siberia, Russia, just above Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. There are a few simple rules: the car must be unsuitable, fit for scrap and under 1.2ltr, there is no back up, no route and it’s an adventure.

“Both of us want to travel and see the world, to take the road less travelled. It’s also good to push yourself out your comfort zone for a good cause. Mam and I also discussed the race and she was always so proud when I did something like this, I completed the Rickshaw run across India in 2015.

“It was exhausting, we couldn’t meet her needs and she was in agony. Mam was referred to Eden Valley Hospice and if I’m honest we were worried. We’d had bad experiences with healthcare and mam wanted to stay at home. We soon learned how amazing the service was.

“I work in healthcare and I had ridiculously high standards when it came to mams care; all of them were surpassed. Staff cared for mam and the family in such a personal way. It’s hard to pin point what it was they did because it was so many different things; medical obviously, spiritually, encouraging mam to live the life she had left, emotional support for her and us. A dignified and peaceful end where she knew she was surrounded by love and then that care continued to bereavement support for me.

“The hospice remains such an important place to me.

Staff always say hello, ask how I am and it gives me somewhere to go when I need to feel close to mam. I feel forever indebted for the service that was provided and it doesn’t matter how much I raise it will never be enough. Every penny we raise can help support another family that was in our position. To take away some stress and to provide care, ease suffering and help in all the ways the hospice does.

“To us it’s so important to give back what we can to the hospice. To say thank you for all the care they have provided to those we have known and to honour mams memory.

“She knew I would raise money for the hospice and she completely agreed it needs support from the community. We are trying to raise £10,000 this year to be shared between Eden Valley Hospice and Cancer Research UK. We are using the challenge as a platform to share information about the hospice and what it is like to be affected by cancer.

“It helps to give focus and to move forward, kind of like therapy, to feel useful and give back.

Team Genghis Khanmeleon will embark on their fundraising challenge in July 2018. The fantastic team name references the famous Mongolian, updating Anna’s team name from her Rickshaw Run in 2015, Korma Chameleon, which was created by Andy.

“The stories we will get to tell, the memories we make and the bragging rights! The Mongol Rally is a huge undertaking, its not your average holiday, it’s a real adventure and the unplanned will happen. The hardest parts will be the best parts, thinking on your feet, working out where you are and trying to fix things with no real skills.

“We are also trying to do it as cheaply as possible, so we are camping as much as possible, washing in rivers or in solar showers and cooking for ourselves. We are looking forward to this part because how often do you get to stay under the stars in the middle of Kazakhstan or Russia? The roads, well the non-roads, as we drive East, unmarked, sparsely travelled and unfinished.

Okay, there is a lot we are looking forward to. It’s the most unpredictable, adventurous thing we can do.

“Also, the possibility of arguments, the race will be stressful; getting lost, breaking down, finding fuel, trying to communicate in at least 15 languages we don’t know and it will be tiring. Andy doesn’t drive, I don’t have any mechanical skills or know my right from my left. Luckily we work well together, Andy is calm and I’m driven by time and deadlines so hopefully this mix will lead to use finishing with the 7 week time frame.”

To date, Anna and Andy have taken part in a range of fundraising events to raise their £10,000 fundraising target, including a cake sale, cut their hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust, completed the Carlisle Santa Dash and hosted a fundraising night out. They are also planning on hosting more fundraising events in the coming months.

“I’m not looking forward to the toilet arrangements, they are going to be interesting. Like we’ve said we want to camp but that leads us to more natural toilet habits. I treated Andy to a collapsible shovel/pick axe as a present ready for this eventuality.

Our promises and commitments to you The patient and their family are at the centre of everything we do at Eden Valley Hospice.

Since 1991, our nurses, activity coordinators, doctors and volunteers have supported nearly 10,000 people at their most vulnerable time.

With the support of Healthwatch Cumbria a group of patient and family representatives, volunteers and staff worked together to the create the Charter, which turns the hospice’s values into promises and commitments to our patients and their families during their time with us.

All our care is personalised to ensure everyone’s individual circumstances are supported in a way that is most important to them and their loved ones. We do this not just because of our professional training and codes of conduct but as a sincere expression of our personal values.

Over the coming months and year’s we will monitor the Patient Charter by speaking to our patients and their families about their experiences here at Eden Valley Hospice. You can find out more about this on Page 8 of the newsletter.

During 2017 we were delighted to work in partnership with Healthwatch Cumbria to create the hospice’s very first Patient Charter. The Patient Charter captures the hospice’s values and ensures they are fully embedded into the organisation.

Dreaming of an improved future…

Update.

In the Autumn 2017 edition of Hospice News we shared our dreams for an improved future at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

As we explained, many of the fixtures and fittings at the hospice are more than 25 years old and need to be improved in the future.

Doug McGarr, Facilities Manager, provides an update on our dreams for the future. “The support from local businesses and individuals has been overwhelming with many pledging support with providing items such as specialist bathroom items at much-reduced costs and others offering money towards the projects mentioned.

“One local business, WWWindows, have offered to supply and install bifold doors that will help to make our pond area more accessible for patients and families. They will do this completely free of charge.”

Deborah Waite, from WWWindows, explained “We are more than happy to help a local charity so close to our heart.”

Doug continued, “Another well known local business owner, Donald Marks, has offered to help and now two large areas of Jigsaw have already had new carpets fitted without any charge.”

Donald (pictured right), from D Marks Carpets, explained, “I visited

the hospice and had a look around.

I was amazed by the great work the staff do and the care which is provided. I immediately wanted to help so together with other local business contacts, we have supplied and fitted carpet to two large areas and we are looking at other areas that we can improve in the future.”

Doug concluded, “The support we received from the local community is outstanding and we are now several steps closers to realising our dreams for an improved future.”

Feedback is vital to our care A small team of hospice volunteers take the time to speak to our patients and their families about their experiences of Eden Valley Hospice.

The valuable feedback they receive helps the hospice to develop and improve our care, support and activities in the future. Steve Golding, Voluntary Services Manager, explains about the important role the group of volunteers have at the hospice.

“The Patient Survey Volunteer role started with three volunteers who piloted the programme and today is carried out by five volunteers who cover the Adult Ward and Day Hospice.

“It is a very unique and sensitive role as the volunteers chat, often one to one, with our patients, listening to their stories and getting to know more about them on a personal level.

“Last year the volunteers worked closely with clinical staff and Healthwatch Cumbria with the development of the Patient Charter.

Today, the volunteers carry out the surveys alongside the Patient Charters aims to make sure we are meeting the needs of our patients and delivering on the promises set out.”

What is it like to be a Patient Survey Volunteer? Hilary Brown and Pete Denyer explain more about the role.

Hilary, who also volunteers in our Furniture shop, said, “When I was first asked if I would like to be part of the Patient Survey Team I was hesitant to say yes. I didn’t know if I could cope with speaking to people who I imagined would be very distressed. How wrong I was!

“My role involves talking to patients and often their families about their experiences while under the care of the hospice. The chat is relaxed and informal although we are guided by questions around our promises in the hospice Patient Charter. A charter drawn up by a panel on which I was privileged to be part of.

“Visiting the wards and speaking to patients I find is a very uplifting and rewarding experience often listening to talks of years gone by and of family life.”

Pete continued “We work with the nursing staff to identify suitable patients who are able and willing to participate. We then have a conversation about how they felt before coming to the hospice, how they feel now, the kind of services

and treatment provided, their experiences etc.

“Sometimes this follows our outline questionnaire but often not. After the introductions and an explanation of what we are going to do the patients tell you their story. It is remarkable how positive many of the patients are about not only the hospice, but their situation. There are many fascinating stories they are happy to share and it’s a real privilege to spend time with them at what is clearly such a difficult time.

“The vast majority of responses are incredibly positive, but occasionally problems are picked up. Most of these are dealt with immediately by passing the information on to nursing, maintenance or catering staff, others are dealt with after reports have been passed on to senior staff.”

Hilary concluded, “We cannot choose life or death but we can choose how we approach the latter and if I can help then I am privileged indeed. Especially when a patient I am talking to takes hold of his wife’s hand, looks into her eyes and says ‘while I am in here I can relax and look into my lovely wife’s eyes just like I used to and she looks back and we know all is well.”

Challenge of a Lifetime In September 2017, Jack Tinkler embarked on a fundraising challenge of a lifetime as he completed a 6 day trek through the Amazon Rainforest. The challenge was special for Jack as he completed it in memory of his Dad, David ‘Tink’ Tinkler.

but I’d say the best part was the adrenaline. Facing fears, up close and personal with some of the worlds most dangerous insects, snakes and mammals. Going into unknown territory and not knowing what would await you, a real haveto-be-there moment.

The incredible challenge saw Jack and his friend, Fiona Barwick, sleeping in hammocks, fishing for their dinner and using basic facilities during the challenge as they walked and canoed through the Amazon.

Having completed the challenge Jack and Fiona returned to the hospice to let us know how the challenge went.

“Difficult parts were exhaustion and climate. Trying to canoe down the Amazon in 34 degrees heat wasn’t easy at all. Especially trying to paddle through the wakes of passing boats. For me personally, the hardest part of the challenge was my Dad’s anniversary on 20 September and being quite emotional not being able to speak to my family.

Jack explained, “I loved the overall experience, I’ve met some amazing people who I’ll stay in touch with,

“I genuinely can’t thank everyone enough. Those who sponsored me,

pep talks, to people advising me on what kit to bring! Together we raised £12,000 and I couldn’t have done it without you all. So an honest and heartfelt thank you.

“I’m working with the hospice fundraising team to come up with an idea for another challenge next year, and hope that we can collectively smash this total.”

Colour Run returns for 2018 Vivid colours will brighten up Carlisle this May as our annual Colour Run returns to the racecourse…

Bigger, brighter and with added bubbles!

On Sunday 13 May the hospice’s fourth 5km Colour Run will take place and registration for the event is now open! The family friendly event will see thousands of fundraisers transforming themselves from a blank canvas into a rainbow of colour as they complete two laps of the track.

The vibrant day of fundraising will see people transformed from a blank canvas into a rainbow of colour as they pass through the different paint stations where they will be showered in coloured powdered paint along with the return of the foam station.

There is no minimum sponsorship for the Colour Run, all the hospice asks it that you raise as much money as you can to help Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

Your registration fee covers all costs involved in administrating your place as well as providing you with your Colour Run paint, t-shirt, sunglasses, bubbles and your finishers prize.

What are you waiting for?

Gather together your family, friends and work colleagues and sign up for Carlisle’ brightest and foamiest 5km event. Whether you walk, run or dance around the route, we can guarantee you will have a bright and vibrant day.

More than 1,300 people took part in the 2017 event raising almost £60,000 to help the care, support and activities provided at the hospice. Since launching in 2015 the three previous Carlisle Colour Run events have raised an incredible £190,948!

Sam Johnston, Community Fundraiser, explained, “The Colour Run is a brilliant occasion which really pulls the community together to help raise money for the hospice.

It is our signature and biggest event of the year.

“All ages can join in from toddlers to the elderly. We had three generations of one family taking part last year.”

Registration for the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Colour Run at Carlisle Racecourse is now open. Prices are £20 Adults (16+), £10 Children (5 to 15) FREE Under 5s, £45 Family (two adults and two children) and £60 group (four adults).

Entry to the event includes a white t-shirt and a pair of funky sunglasses.

Corporate Challenge Can you be nifty with your fifty?

We have launched a new initiative challenging local businesses to get their entrepreneurial thinking caps on.

The concept of the Corporate Challenge is simple – The hospice gives each business £50 and encourages them to turn it into as much as possible using their ingenuity and entrepreneurship.

There are absolutely no guidelines as to the kind of fundraising activities chosen, as long as it’s ethical and legal.

One business to have already taken part in the hospice’s Corporate Challenge is Scott Duff & Co. Cheryl Corson, Director at Scott Duff & Co. explains: “The hospice is very close to the hearts of our staff, with some staff having had family members and close friends using the hospice services, including one whilst the challenge was taking place. The hospice does a fabulous job and we know how much they rely on donations to fund their services, so it is a great cause to support personally and as a business.

work together to do something worthwhile and for the good of the local community. The Corporate Challenge is fun and a great way to create interest in our business from people who may not have engaged with us previously.

“Last year we held a Halloween Party which was attended by over 140 people, many of which were not previous clients of ours but wanted to support the hospice. Whilst doing so they became aware of the services we can offer them too, so it’s a win-win situation for a local business like us while at the same time raising a fabulous amount for the hospice.

“This was the second time we at Scott Duff & Co. had taken part and it really brings us together as a team, with many people contributing to the ideas for fundraising also working together to host the events. This is on top of the pride we get from being able to raise money to support such an important local charity.

“It would be great if our efforts inspired other businesses to take part in the future. It is a great way to advertise the services you offer whilst also building a relationship with the hospice and continuing to support and raise vital funds for the services the hospice offers.

“We would like to thank all the other local businesses who contributed to our event by offering free vouchers and prizes for our raffle and to the Storm Trooper and Mickey and Minnie Mouse who attended free of charge to entertain the children – all of which helped us to raise so much money this time round. We really enjoyed it and are looking forward to the next one already.”

In the two Corporate Challenges Scott Duff & Co. have transformed their £100 (£50 from each event) into an amazing £3,161.75. Along with the other companies who have taken part in the Corporate Challenge during 2017, all of the businesses have helped to raise £8,400.

Almost 18 months ago three local people decided to complete a charity swim, which entailed swimming 1 mile a day in 7 different lakes in 7 consecutive dates. In October 2016 the 777 Lakes Swim Challenge was born.

Over the coming months 11 more like-minded individuals, including family and friends, were recruited to the fundraising team to help raise as much money as possible. The group chose to raise money in aid of two charities, Eden Valley Hospice and Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.

Judy Williamson, one of the event organisers, explained, “We started our training immediately as we knew how hard the challenge would be, especially for the more novice swimmers who had very little experience swimming. Two swimmers had recently had shoulder operations and some had not swam for many years.

“We enlisted the help of our coach Frank Pattinson and the Wigton Baths, Frank arranged an extra training session for us each week and all our swimmers quickly improved. We appreciate the hard work and commitment put in by Frank, without his help it would have been a much harder challenge.

“In May 2017, we had our first Lakes swim in Derwent Water. The biggest challenge we found with some of the swimmers was the darkness and depth of the water, not knowing what lies beneath and that they were so far out in the lake if anything was to go wrong. We had a team of safety kayakers whose watchful eyes kept us safe and gave us the confidence we needed each swim.

“We started the challenge on Sunday 16 July in Wastwater and swam a different lake every evening for the next seven days, finishing in Coniston Water on Saturday 22 July. All the swimmers worked through the day and turned out each evening to swim. We covered many miles that week and had a lot of late nights getting home late and organising for the following night.

“We built up a team of dedicated followers and truly appreciated

their support at each swim. They baked and brought picnics for everyone to share and the spirit they brought to the swim was incredible. This is what we enjoyed the most about the challenge, it brought everyone together and the encouragement and support we received from each other and our supporters.

“We were truly overwhelmed by all the generous donations and sponsorship received from many individuals and businesses, both from the local community and much further afield. We raised a total of £15,630 to be shared between Eden Valley Hospice and Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.

“The legacy from our challenge is that everyone wants to carry on swimming and do an even harder challenge. We have even inspired some of our kayakers to train and join us in the water next time.”

Make a Will Month - April 2018 Once again we are running our Make a Will month campaign in April. Several local solicitors are offering appointments to have a Will drawn up in exchange for a donation to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

Making a Will and keeping it up to date is an important thing to do. Without a Will you can’t control what will happen to your assets or who will look after any young children after you die. People often put off making a Will but it is simple and straightforward to do.

A list of participating solicitors will be announced in the coming weeks on the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw website and social media pages.

Getting Your Affairs in Order and Funeral Planning Booklets These very helpful booklets will help you to make plans about future care and getting your affairs in order. They discuss making a Will, Lasting Power of Attorney, Advance Statements, Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment, emergency health care plans and funeral planning.

We have been overwhelmed with the very positive feedback about the booklets and the peace of mind it has given people who have made their plans for the future.

Tribute Funds We will shortly be launching the new Cherished Memories tribute fund pages on our website, as featured in the Autumn 2017 hospice newsletter. Cherished Memories will allow you to create an online page in memory of a loved one.

You will be able to add photos, music, stories and also light a virtual candle on anniversaries. If you wish, you can also add details of any fundraising events or activities and encourage donations in memory of your loved one.

Celebrations, redevelopment and expansions for hospice retail team Following on from the huge successes of 2016 the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Retail Team are celebrating again after a memorable 2017.

Throughout the year your incredible donations of unwanted clothing, furniture and much more has helped our shops in Carlisle, Penrith, Wigton and Brampton to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds in aid of the hospice. Along with greeting thousands of customers during the year some of the shops have been transformed with new layouts and paint schemes, whilst plans are in place to develop more shops in 2018.

“All our shops have had an amazing year, including our boutique shop in Fisher Street, Carlisle, and the Lanes Bookshop. In October we recruited Anne Charlton as Multi-Site Supervisor to be responsible for these shops. Since Anne started she has given the Boutique Shop a new look by changing the layout and is planning to do a similar upgrade in the Bookshop.”

Jude Robinson, Jigsaw Shop Manager, explained, “Our Penrith shop has completed a fantastic year of trading with tremendous first-year results, lots of fun and barrels-full of compliments from customers and visitors to the town. The shop has certainly made an impact!

“We have dressed the shop, and ourselves, for the Marmalade Festival, May Day, the Winter Droving and of course, Santa. Last year we had an Elf for Selfies in the window, which was great fun.

“The growing team of volunteers have enjoyed the dayto-day shop task, helped out with events such as the Colour Run and Penrith’s lovely Light Up a Life Service.

They have watched me abseiling down the Civic Centre in Carlisle to raise money for the hospice, and indulged in innumerable lunches out, evening concerts, local music gigs and enough coffee to float a boat.”

Kath Fisher, Furniture Shop Manager, continued, “Our Furniture Shop has had an excellent year – raising £285,000. The shop has been given a fresh new look to complement the quality donations we regularly receive.

Our volunteer base has grown steadily over the past year, but going forward, we plan to open Sundays and Bank Holidays, so are looking to recruit new volunteers to help out at those times.”

Kate Apperley, Lonsdale Street Manager, concluded, “When I took over the Lonsdale Street shop in April I changed around the shop floor, enabling us to sell more stock and sales improved in all departments. In 2017 ladies tops made the hospice more than £10,000 more money than they had in 2016, whilst bric-a-brac and household items increased by almost £4,000.

“In 2018 we are looking forward to a shop re-fit when the square footage for bric-a-brac will increase enabling us to sell even more of the fabulous donations that come through our door.”

Saturday 7 July 2018 – Laps for Loved Ones, Talkin Tarn In 2017 hospice Healthcare Assistants, Carol Sharman and Rachael Little, were joined by more than 100 walkers as they completed 20 laps of the local beauty spot. Laps for Loved Ones will return in 2018 as we encourage you to complete one, or more, laps in memory of a loved one.

Sunday 22 July 2018 – Cycle the Solway (Date TBC) Our annual cycling event is set to return to the beautiful Cumbrian coast again this summer. Full details for this year’s event will be announced over the coming weeks.

Sunday 19 August 2018 – Morecambe Bay Walk Enjoy the picturesque views of the Morecambe Bay as you complete a memorable 8 mile walk from Arnside to Kent’s Bank. The walk will again be led by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands Cedrick Robinson.

September

Sunday 2 September – Carlisle Half Starting and finishing at Brunton Park, the home of Carlisle United, the run day will include a half marathon, 10km and 2km fun run. This year Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw have been selected as the events chose charity.

Superheroes, singing and Santa Claus Last November, with Christmas approaching superheroes, animated characters and Santa Claus took time out of their hectic schedule to create special memories at Jigsaw’s annual Family Christmas Party.

For the very first time the festive event was held at Carlisle Racecourse and was attended by Jigsaw families from across the county. The action packed day was filled with laughter and memories as the families enjoyed party games, a Christmas sing along and the opportunity to meet Santa.

Party is supported by a host of local businesses and community groups, including Direct Rail Services (DRS) who’s continued support has helped Jigsaw in a wide variety of ways.

Our annual Open Day raises funds which enables us to donate to charities like Jigsaw and many other local causes. Our employees also take part in a range of sponsored events to raise funds for the hospice.

Charity of the Year Partnership pays for a day of care at Jigsaw In early 2017 accountants robinson+co chose Jigsaw as their Charity of the Year partner. Since launching the partnership the companies offices in Workington, Whitehaven and Gosforth have thrown themselves into the fundraising challenge and managed to Pay For a Day of Care at Jigsaw.

During the Charity of the Year partnership one member of staff, Adam Pattison, completed his own challenge as he ran the Liverpool Rock and Roll Marathon. Below Adam explains about the partnership and his own fundraising challenge.

“As a firm, each year we look to support a local charity and focus all our efforts on any fundraising activities for the one chosen by the staff. One of my colleagues had experienced the amazing work Jigsaw does and the care and support it provided a family member and other relatives. Therefore Jigsaw was proposed as a possible option for robinsons+co’s nominated charity for the year, and when all options were put to the staff vote, Jigsaw came out as the unanimous choice.

“It was on my bucket list to run a marathon before I turned 30, but it was harder than I thought it would be. The thought of the marathon and Jigsaw kept my focus and helped to keep me training on the long nights and weekend runs.

“Initially I aimed to raise around £300 or £400 for Jigsaw, as this was the amount I raised when taking part in the Great North Run in aid of the RNIB. But I was humbled with the amount I was able to raise. People really got behind the idea as they know it’s a challenge, they know what Jigsaw does and I was fundraising for the robinson+co team too.”

To date robinson+co’s Charity of the Year partnership has helped to raise an amazing £3,414.03, enough to pay for more than one day of care at the children’s hospice. As part of our Pay For a Day campaign robinson+co have chosen to pay for Wednesday 6 June 2018, which is Adam’s birthday.

Activities in Jigsaw The care, support and activities provided at Jigsaw are continually changing. Our nurses, activity coordinators and health care assistants are continually learning new skills to help develop the care we provide to all our children, young adults and their families.

Helen Farren, Lead Nurse at Jigsaw, explains about some of the new care, support and activities we have introduced at Jigsaw.

Reiki “Staff Nurse Debs Ivinson and Activity Coordinator Lesley Faulder have recently qualified as Reiki II practitioners by the hospice’s very own Complementary Therapy Coordinator Nicky Forbes. Reiki is a gentle therapy that can be delivered anywhere, such as in a chair on a bed, or even in the Sensory Room.

“Our aim is to deliver this wonderful complementary therapy, with the hope that, those receiving it will get a sense of relaxation and calm. We are all looking forward to being able to offer Reiki to the children, young adults and families who attend Jigsaw.”

Drawing and Talking “Activity Coordinator Jacqueline Jackson is excited to offer a new therapy technique called Drawing and Talking. Jacqueline has been trained to offer therapy sessions, to children and young adults on healing underlying emotional pain.

“Over a series of 12 weeks, we offer 30 minutes, one to one session with Jacqueline. During this dedicated time, people are given the opportunity to express themselves through drawing and talk about the emotion in the picture in a calm, comfortable way. Drawing and Talking is available to all our children, young adults, siblings and young family members.”

Story Massage “Jacqueline and Lesley completed a wonderful training work shop in Story Massage. This is a way of telling a story through 10 simple massage strokes. The emphasis is on sharing the many benefits of nurturing and positive touch.

“The team have found this a useful tool during music and story time. We have found Story Massage has had a very positive experience with our children and young adults. The Jigsaw team are also very keen to share this technique with the parents and families at Jigsaw.”

Jessie’s Fund “Last year Lesley and Jacqueline attended a music workshop run by a charity called Jessie’s Fund. Jessie’s Fund helps children and young adults with additional and complex needs or serious life limiting conditions to enjoy and hopefully communicate through music.

“Music can provide a very powerful way, in which children can express themselves and hopefully connect with the world around them. It isn’t about being able to play an

instrument but more about being able to express their feeling and emotions and interact with their surroundings in a very positive way.

“The music sessions are predominantly lead by the children’s needs and how they may be feeling at that time. Jacqueline and Lesley have certainly found this an excellent tool to use within Jigsaw as music certainly is a very big part of our days.”

You help make a difference!

Our daughter Esmee has been coming to Jigsaw for a few years, and it’s a lifeline for us.

Esmee was born ‘floppy’ – with an undiagnosed neurological disorder; it’s how she’s been her whole life now. She has no independent movement or speech.

There’s just nowhere else like Jigsaw for her. Esmee has seizures almost constantly but we know that the Jigsaw nurses will be with her all the time, caring for her with the same love and attention we give her. The sensory room is wonderful and we know for certain, a day at Jigsaw will have been a day packed with fun for her; we often come back to find she’s painted a picture for us to take home.

It’s a drive for us to come up from Kendal – but we look forward to the journey because we know Esmee is going to have such a great time and that means the world to us.

Cameron’s been coming to Jigsaw for more than 10 years now, it’s like his second home.

He needs constant one-to-one care, 24 hours a day. I know he’ll get that at Jigsaw and I know that even if he’s not feeling well they’ll be able to care for him properly. It’s so clear that the staff treat him as an individual and look for the potential he has to achieve something new every time he goes.

I’m a single parent and Jigsaw have been a constant support for me as well. My older son moved to Australia and I thought I’d never be able to go over to see him. But Jigsaw stepped in; actually volunteering to look after Cameron for a whole week so I could see my other son.

No-one else could have offered that to us. It’s a precious, unique place for families like ours.

I struggle to say how much Jigsaw have impacted my life because they’ve just turned things around for me.

They’re fabulous.

Even when I was little and well, I hated being away from home overnight – I’ve always been such a home bird. Since being poorly I hadn’t spent a single night away from Mum because my medical conditions are so complex to manage. So, going to the hospice for the first time was quite a big step for me.

But, walking in, it just felt so warm, relaxed and homely. After I came back from my first night at Jigsaw, I knew we were going to get all the support that we had been needing from then on. Knowing that I can spend the night away feeling relaxed and safe is such a relief – it gives my mum and I a complete break.

Will you Pay For a Day? Pay for a day is a unique opportunity for every individual, family, company or organisation in Cumbria to make a real, immediate contribution to the care of the most vulnerable children and young adults in our community.

By raising £2,126.46 you will pay for the entire running costs of our children’s hospice service – for a whole 24 hours. You can choose the day – and choose how to raise or donate the funds needed.

There’s no limit to the amount or time you need to raise the money – and equally no limit to the number of days care you can choose to pay for. We are here to give you all the support and encouragement you need to make your fundraising enjoyable, successful and rewarding.

Todhunter, Account Manager at Thomas Graham, explains: “We initially struggled to decide what to do to fundraise for Jigsaw – because we wanted it to be difficult enough that would inspire people to dig deep. That’s why The Three Peaks Challenge felt perfect for us. It was all worth it because as a team we raised enough money to be able to pay for not only one, but four days!

“I would like to encourage everyone reading this to support Jigsaw Children’s Hospice by paying for a day of your choice. Children and young adults with life limiting illnesses in Cumbria need care and support – and that means Jigsaw is indispensable.

“Without people in our community coming together to fundraise for them they wouldn’t be able to provide the care they do every day of the year.”

Charity of the Year In the autumn of 2017 Jigsaw announced an exciting, new charity of the year partnership with local accountants David Allen.

Partner, Alison Welton, explains why the local company chose Jigsaw as their charity partner and about some of the exciting plans they have for the coming year.

Alison explained, “My team and I are proud to support Jigsaw and have chosen them not solely because it is a great cause, but because their working ethos mirrors our own. They work in partnership with the children and young adults, their families, carers and other professionals with whom they are trusted to care for.

“As a team we have already built a fantastic relationship with the staff at Jigsaw through our Charity of the Year partnership with Eden Valley Hospice in 2015/16. Everyone is looking forward to working with Chris, Natalie,

Katrina and the fundraising team over this next year to support and promote Jigsaw and showcase the important work they deliver for children with life limiting illnesses in Cumbria.

“We got the ball rolling from the outset, back in September 2017, our Marketing Senior Hannah completed the Birmingham Half Marathon. Our Charity of the Year committee have also been busy putting together a jam packed calendar of events for the upcoming year which includes bag packs, bike rides, an afternoon tea event and we are delighted to be supporting Jigsaw’s Colour Run on Sunday 13 May 2018.

“I am very proud of the team and the commitment they show to supporting our Charity of the Year initiative, this has allowed us to raise more than £50,000 to date for local charities and we are all excited to see what we can achieve this year.

“At Jigsaw’s Pay For a Day event my team got a first-hand insight into the truly amazing facilities and the help Jigsaw provides. The benefits of running the Charity of the Year initiative were summed up that afternoon, when my staff saw exactly what all their hard work helps to support.

“As a local business we recognise the importance of supporting the local community, if all we do is be an advocate of such a worthwhile cause and raise awareness of the work being delivered, then that can only be a wonderful thing.

Welcome Hello and welcome to the 2018 Spring newsletter.

It’s an unexpected pleasure and honour to have the opportunity to introduce the newsletter again this year in my role as Interim Chief Executive of Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. This newsletter captures some of the special events of the past few months as well as introducing the plans for 2018.

First can I make a special plea for you to complete the form on page 18. In May new regulations come into force which govern the way we manage any information we hold about you, such as name, address and telephone number. The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) give you more control over how this information is managed and used.

GDPR means that you should be able to make choices about when and how we contact you, either by post, telephone or email. In future we need your explicit permission to keep your details on our database so that we can send you this newsletter and other information about the hospice. So please complete the form and send or give it back to us.

Jigsaw looks after a range of children and young people with complex needs and we need to ensure that the facilities continue to be maintained and developed.

The newly refurbished sensory room is proving very popular with both the children and the staff. It is great to share information about staff developing new skills

such as reiki and story massage to support the children.

It is so good to hear directly from the young people and their families about what the care and support from Jigsaw means to them.

It has been a great privilege to be able to come back to Jigsaw in an interim role whilst the Board of Trustees undertake the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive. It is a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic team of staff and volunteers both within Jigsaw and supporting the shops and external fundraising events; these are the people who create the spirit of the hospice and the excellent care it provides.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your ongoing support for Jigsaw and encourage you to continue that support in the future.
