From the media room, or indeed any area in this “smart house,” owner Scott Page can control televisions, electronics, draperies, climate, fans, closed-circuit screens, pool temperature, fountain and lighting effects with the touch of a button.

OVERLOOKING THE INTRACOASTAL Waterway, this Fort Lauderdale home was a blank canvas waiting to be painted. It began as a modest request. Impressed with the redesign of his Atlanta offices by Don Yoshino, a disciple of Paolo Soleri, owner Scott Page asked the well-respected designer and architect to take a look at the kitchen in his South Florida home. “As soon as he came in the door, he just stopped,” Page recalls. “Don said, ‘If we’re going to do this, we really need to go all the way.’ ” Creating a highly livable space with a contemporary aesthetic, Yoshino married tactile and visual elements into one wellbalanced design. “Scott wanted a ‘wow’ around every corner,” Yoshino says. While the original footprint of the house remains, all else was altered beginning with the

front elevation. “The rich red hue draws attention away from the garage and presents a focal point at the entrance,” the designer says. Bringing the color indoors, the foyer is accentuated with a punch of red, three square windows and a modern floor lamp made of treated crushed-silk that captures the shapes and shades of coral reefs. A red faux-leather fireplace wall distinguishes the main living area. “Touch is a vital part of good design,” Yoshino says. “I wanted people to be drawn to it.” Here, curved lines of the tan leather sofa lend a horizontal reference to the dramatic spiral staircase. “That was one of the first things I wanted to change,” Yoshino says. Substantially widened and turned in a more suitable direction, the stairs appear to float. A handrail wrapped in red leather and the use of Brazilian Ipei wood add texture. “You don’t

The foyer creates a dramatic pause with the “Morning Glory” floor lamp from Ayala Serfaty’s line of organic lamps. “Its movement begins in a vertical motion and fans out at the top,” designer Don Yoshino says.

Leafy hues in the ceiling tray mimic the natural colors of the chenille bedding from Kravet, suede headboard and Ipei wood flooring in the master bedroom.

realize it until you touch it,” Page says. “The staircase is truly a work of art.” Yoshino integrated another unexpected visual and tactile element with an onyx sculptural form in the kitchen. Sliced and stacked ribbons of onyx create a resplendent fiber optic sculpture that establishes an interplay of wood, steel and stone. He chose African Wenge wood for the custom-milled cabinetry and poured concrete for the countertops — sealed and finished to a polished sheen. Color is introduced in the media room, where a customdesigned area rug in signature shades of red, green and brown centers an oversized tan leather sofa in front of the media wall. Texture is layered in with a pair of bamboo floor vases while woven barrel chairs mirror an underlying circular theme. Generous proportions in the master bedroom accommodate the custom-designed bed and cabi-

netry. Wide-plank wood flooring adds texture and depth to the space, while chenille bedding, suede pillows in muted reds and greens, and a tan faux-suede headboard bring the home’s natural elements together. To soften the space, copper-colored sheers hang gracefully behind the bed. Honed Turkish limestone floors throughout extend seamlessly to the pool’s raised exotic Ipei wood deck. A contemporary touch is created on the upper deck with a modern sail design for the awnings. “We went with a more interesting railing angle and a unique design for the canvas that lends a sense of place on the waterway,” Yoshino says. Here, a tradition began. “I climb to Widow’s Walk and view the Intracoastal,” Page says. “Then I make my way down to the deck and cannonball into the pool,” he says with a laugh. “It’s just one of those things I always said I would do if I got my dream home.”
