150 Years of excellence

1871: Sisters of Mercy open Academy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Sisters of Mercy expanded their ministry by opening the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on what is now the Mount de Sales campus. They laid the foundation for one of the oldest independent schools in Georgia.

1876: Sisters of Mercy establish Mount de Sales Academy
The Sisters formally established Mount de Sales Academy. Their vision emphasized intellectual formation, spiritual development, and characterbuilding all values that continue to define the MDS experience today.
1882: The first graduation exercise takes place
Mount de Sales marked the first a long tradition of sending young women, and later all young adults, into the world prepared for leadership, service, and lifelong learning.
Across a century and a half, Mount de Sales has evolved while holding fast to its mission: forming young people of faith, intellect, stewardship, and integrity. Each decade brought new programs, facilities, and opportunities, strengthening the Academy’s legacy as a pillar of Catholic education in Middle Georgia. For generations, the Sisters of Mercy shaped education in Macon by welcoming students of every background and creating a place where faith, service, and learning came together. Their early mission extended far beyond the classroom into the community. Today, we honor that legacy while continuing to teach Cavaliers who will become servant leaders and the innovators of their time.

1910: The Convent Academy Building is completed
The completion of the Convent Academy Building provided expanded classrooms, study spaces, and administrative offices. With this addition, Mount de Sales became a full high school, offering advanced academic preparation.

1836: MDS welcomes boarding students from across the region
Students from across Georgia and nearby states began enrolling as boarders at Mount de Sales. The Academy became known for its commitment to educating young women from diverse backgrounds.
1901: MDS alumnae association is organized
Former students came together to form the first alumnae association, strengthening the bond between graduates and the Academy.
1955: Mercy Hall completed with science lab
The opening of Mercy Hall provided one of the school’s first dedicated science laboratories, expanding instructional opportunities in math and the sciences.
1959: MDS begins accepting boys, becomes co-educational
Mount de Sales opened its doors to male students, officially becoming a co-educational institution. This step broadened the school’s mission and strengthened its role within the wider Macon community.
1950
1973: De Sales Hall opens with new library and classrooms
De Sales Hall provided significantly expanded academic space, including a new library to support research, reading, and study across all grade levels.

1987: Middle school returns
Mount de Sales reintroduced its middle school program, creating a seamless grade 6–12 experience rooted in strong academic preparation and a supportive environment for adolescent growth.

1975

RETIRING FACULTY
MR. DUANE HUNTER
Duane Hunter’s 20 Year Career at Mount de Sales Academy
Mr. Duane Hunter joined the faculty of Mount de Sales Academy in 2005, following many years of teaching at other GISA schools. He had long admired the school from a distance, so when a position opened, he was quick to apply By what he describes as “the grace of God,” he was hired Part of what drew him to the MDS community was the warmth of individuals like Coach Robert Slocum, the Pierce brothers, Sister Mary Rosina, and Monsignor Cuddy, who had always made him feel welcomed and comfortable
Over the next 20 years, Mr Hunter taught AP Government, Government, Economics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Psychology. While he found great joy in the subject matter, it was the students who left the most lasting impression. He admired their eagerness to be challenged, their positive attitudes, and their willingness to take ownership of their own learning. “They always came into my classroom smiling,” he shared, “and that would brighten my day.”
In addition to his academic contributions, Mr. Hunter was deeply involved in the school’s athletic programs, coaching both football and basketball throughout his tenure. One of his proudest moments was witnessing his own two children graduate from Mount de Sales, milestones that reflected his commitment to the school and the lasting impact it had on his family
Faith played a central role in Mr Hunter’s experience at MDS He credits the Academy with helping to strengthen his Catholic faith and appreciates being part of a faculty that supports one another as a true community “I always enjoyed how the MDS faculty seems like family They look out for each other and want each other to succeed ”
In 2021, Mr. Hunter began to experience symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and was formally diagnosed in 2023. With his retirement, he looks forward to staying active outdoors on his family’s land and spending meaningful time with loved ones, especially his grandson, Andrew. Though his time in the classroom has come to a close, Mr. Hunter’s impact at Mount de Sales is lasting
He expressed deep gratitude for his years as a Cavalier, calling them “some of the best of my life ” While he will certainly be missed by students, colleagues, and alumni, the legacy of his dedication, faith, and positive spirit will remain woven into the fabric of the MDS community
MR. MARK MCMAHON
As Mr. Mark McMahon steps into retirement, he reflects on a journey that has come full circle, beginning decades ago as a student at Mount de Sales Academy. A member of the Class of 1977, he isn’t alone in his connection to the school. His wife, Mary, also graduated that same year, and together they continued the MDS legacy when their son Sean graduated in 2018. His siblings Debbie (’74), Michael (’75), Charyl (’80), and Joel (’84) also walked the same halls, making Mount de Sales a cornerstone of their family’s story.
After earning his degree from Mercer University in 1981, Mr. McMahon returned to MDS to complete his student teaching under the mentorship of Mr Ron McLachlan, his former Chemistry and Physics teacher, who later became a valued colleague He spent the first 30 years of his teaching career in Nebraska public schools and returned home to MDS in 2011 For the past 14 years, he taught Physics, often in the very same classrooms where he once sat as a student
One of his most vivid memories is his first day teaching at MDS. Standing at the front of a familiar classroom, now as a teacher instead of a student, was a powerful and humbling experience. However, the moment that stands above all others is watching his son, Sean, graduate in 2018 a fullcircle moment that beautifully tied together his roles as student, teacher, and parent.
Throughout his career, Mr. McMahon learned the importance of patience, particularly in the classroom. He often reminded himself that while students and teachers may share the same space each day, each person arrives there from a unique path with a different background and life story His philosophy: teach in as many ways as possible, and eventually, everyone will learn
As he retires, his hope for Mount de Sales is that it continues to embrace and promote the diversity that defines the school community He believes that this diversity is one of MDS’s greatest strengths Coupled with a commitment to academic excellence, he is confident the school will continue to challenge and inspire students for generations to come.
In retirement, Mr. McMahon looks forward to spending more time with his family, especially in his new role as a grandfather. He and Mary are excited for “grandparent daycare” and plan to stay active through hiking, biking, and, of course, playing plenty of Pickleball.
Mount de Sales has been a defining part of his life’s journey, and Mr. McMahon leaves with a deep sense of gratitude for the memories, the relationships, and the opportunity to give back to the school that helped shape him.
MR. TOM RULE
“Living proof God has a sense of humor.”
Tom Rule’s email signature never failed to amuse us at MDS.
In 2013, Brenda Timms, MDS Technology Director, sent a message to Tom about a job opening. After ten years away from MDS, it was God’s timing that Tom return to Mount de Sales with that unique brain of his His commitment to MDS was remarkable; he was purposeful, persistent, and always looking out for others, even when it meant coming to campus at 4 a m to fix a school-wide iPad issue
Tom Rule retires after 17 years of service in education and technology, a career spanning musical performances and networking infrastructure, sustained by an unwavering desire to help students and faculty His journey was
anything but typical for an IT Director; starting with a master’s degree in piano performance, he implemented an $80K Music Tech Lab at Macon State College.
Tom shares that he never really expected to be at MDS, never expected to leave, and never expected to return; but he says with his trademark humility and humor, “I’m glad I did. It’s been a good ride, and proof that God has a sense of humor.” From his early days working with Donna Washburn at Vineville Baptist Church to being guided by Sister Rosina into technology education at MDS, Tom was never afraid to pivot.
Tom provided an impressive list of firsts for Mount de Sales: the first school in Middle Georgia to give students email addresses (1995–96), the first in the region to implement a 1:1 iPad program, the first to run fiber between school buildings (long before “gigabit” was a household word), and the first to implement wireless networking across campus, complete with a sign-out cart and a 30-foot cable to connect the airport device
Tom maintained over 99% network uptime with minimal cybersecurity issues, because he built systems to last. His parting words of wisdom: “Don’t trust the tech. Never assume it’s going to work. Always test it out first.”
He has a playful side and cares about people. Tongue in cheek, he claims a crowning moment of achievement when he successfully convinced a junior that his iPad failed because he hadn’t “fed the hamsters” inside. Tom was never too busy to help a student or a fellow faculty member with a technology question. He kept us musically entertained, performing twice in the Music at the Mount series with T-Bar and Gray Sumowski’s band, as well as sharing his formidable musical gifts, playing piano for masses and on countless other occasions
Even now, in retirement, he's not slowing down With nearly 200 tracks in his queue, Tom’s remixing his first album from 1999 on Bandcamp, offering online tutoring in music and tech, and finally finding time to travel a bit more With gratitude for his years of service, we wish Tom well as he pivots to a new stage of a fruitful life.

MR. STEVE STOUT
Steve Stout, who was the Mount de Sales Academy site supervisor for Defense Aspects Group, retired in May 2025 following nearly a decade of dedicated service to the school community.
Stout joined the Mount de Sales community in January 2016. As a retired U.S. Air Force veteran with a career in special investigations, he brought professionalism and a deep sense of duty to his role, ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty and staff.
After sustaining a minor injury in 2020, Stout began transitioning out of his role, with his son, Tyler, assuming the position of site supervisor Stout continued to serve part-time, providing security support for athletic contests, fine arts performances and special events on campus His presence at these occasions reflected his ongoing commitment to the school and his willingness to serve wherever he was needed Reflecting on his tenure at Mount de Sales, Mr. Stout expressed that it had been an honor to protect and support the Cavalier community.
“The staff, teachers, and students at this school are exceptional,” he said.
He noted the pride demonstrated by students, faculty, and staff, which affirmed for him that his work was both valued and meaningful. As he enters full retirement, Stout hopes Mount de Sales will continue to remain faithful to its mission of fostering faith and service in young people.
“Always set your sights on the next level,” Stout said in reflection of his career of service to others. “Always try to be better than you are right now.”
“My legacy to the Institute is charity: If you preserve the peace and union which have never yet been violated among us, you will feel, even in this world, a happiness that will surprise you and be to you a foretaste of the bliss prepared for every one of you in heaven.”
- Catherine McAuley

MEET FRANKIE:
MEET FRANKIE: MOUNT DE SALES’ NEWEST (AND FUZZIEST) TEAM MEMBER
MOUNT DE SALES’ NEWEST (AND FUZZIEST) TEAM MEMBER
Mount de Sales Academy has welcomed many new faces over the years, but none quite like this one. Francis de Tails, better known around campus as Frankie, is already making his mark as the school’s therapy dog-in-training. At just nine months old, the Golden Retriever has quickly become a beloved part of the Cavalier community, trotting through the halls, napping between classes, and greeting students with his trademark puppy grin.

The idea of bringing a therapy dog to campus has been in the back of Mrs. Freeman’s mind for a couple of years. Inspired by her elementary school principal’s service dog, Buzz, she began exploring animal-assisted education and the many emotional and social benefits therapy dogs bring to students. When she shared her vision with Mr. O'Kane, he enthusiastically supported the idea, paving the way for Frankie’s arrival at Mount de Sales.
Choosing Frankie was a matter of fate as much as it was a matter of planning. Mrs. Freeman knew she wanted a Golden Retriever. They are known for their consistent temperament, trainability, and intelligence, all qualities that make for an ideal therapy dog. When Mrs. Freeman went to meet a new litter, she sat down on the ground to observe. Without
hesitation, one curious pup walked straight into her lap and stayed there. Frankie, it seemed, had chosen his family. Though he is still young, Frankie has already started his training Mrs Freeman is guiding him through early obedience and socialization, exposing him to new environments, groups of people, and even mobility aids like walkers and crutches. When he turns one, Frankie will begin the official certification process through a nationally recognized therapy dog alliance. While the length of certification varies, Frankie is already well on his way.
Life as a therapy dog in training keeps Frankie busy from the moment his paws hit the floor. His day begins at 5:30 a.m. with a quick trip outside alongside his big brother Barney, followed by breakfast at 6:15 a.m. He naps on the car ride to school and arrives at 7:30 a.m. ready to clock in for work.
After Mrs Freeman greets students at carpool, she takes Frankie upstairs to check on all of the homerooms. Throughout the day, students who would like to spend a moment with him can stop for a pat or a cuddle, while those who prefer to keep moving can simply pass by. Part of Frankie’s training is learning that both choices are perfectly okay, which helps everyone feel safe and comfortable around him.
It hasn’t taken long for Frankie to make an impact. Attendance, especially on Mondays, has noticeably improved, and countless students and staff find comfort in his presence. One memorable moment came when a sick student was resting in the office; Frankie walked straight over, lay his head in her lap, and stayed there until she began to smile. As Mrs. Freeman puts it, “Frankie has a God-given gift of empathy ”
Frankie is more t school’s commitment to n and spirit, while also adding a little ext ture and joyful spirit Frankie’s future a

WHY I GIVE THE SEDGHI FAMILY

We are proud to announce a transformational philanthropic gift that will significantly support the school’s strategic vision and help to ensure a bright, sustainable future for generations of Cavaliers. The Sedghi family makes this generous contribution with deep ties to the MDS community, representing an extraordinary commitment to Catholic education and the enduring mission of Mount de Sales Academy.
In sharing their decision to give, this Cavalier family offered heartfelt reflections that speak to the values of faith, perseverance, and service that define the Mount de Sales spirit. Mrs. Beth Cleary shared, “One of my father’s favorite quotes was by Khalil Gibran: ‘Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need.’ This quote truly reflects how he lived his life.” Mrs. Beth Cleary is an alumna from the class of 1990, and Sarra, Lea, and Ana Sedghi are from the classes of 2010, 2012, and 2030.
This spirit of generosity and quiet sacrifice from their upbringing and experiences at the Academy has shaped the lives and choices of the Sedghi family. “When I first met Shahriar, I recognized that he, too, had worked incredibly hard for everything he had achieved,” Beth shared. “Although we are different in many ways, his work ethic and devotion to his family were what led me to consider a second date. Together, we have built a good life, one that requires, at times, exhausting effort to maintain We both know we have helped many along the way and have made a positive impact on the lives of others We have each given and sacrificed, individually and as a couple, always with the conviction that it is never wrong to do what is right. My father was at all times a model of humility and kindness, who consistently went out of his way to help others. Over the past two decades, I have witnessed these same qualities in Shahriar, who continually strives to do his utmost for those around him, always
working longer and harder than anyone I’ve ever known, not for his benefit, but for others As long as I’ve known him, he has worked through every vacation by phone or email The accomplishments o Sarra and Lea, as well as Ana’s dedication to her studies and her genuine compassion for others, are a testament to their father’s legacy. These three embod the true pride and joy of a life devoted to selflessness and generosity. It doesn’t surprise me in the least that he wants to continue to see the success of a school and its community, so that students today and in the future have opportunities leading to their own success through dedication and determination. We sincerely appreciate the environment of MDS and look forward to its continued commitment to intellectual rigor and compassion for its students, the true leaders of tomorrow ”

This extraordinary gift will empower Mount de Sales to boldly advance key initiatives outlined in the Academy’s fiveyear strategic plan, including academic innovation, athletic and campus enhancements, and expanded community partnerships and philanthropic opportunities. It stands as a testament not only to the strength of our alumni community’s commitment to Mount de Sales but also to the enduring values taught within our classrooms that students carry with them throughout their lives
“We are humbled and profoundly grateful for this act of visionary generosity,” said Mr. Brendan O’Kane, President of Mount de Sales. “It affirms the transformative power of a Mount de Sales education and inspires us to continue our mission as we look forward to the next 150 years of the Academy.”
As Mount de Sales Academy looks to the future, this impactful gift will serve as both a cornerstone and a catalyst, ensuring the continued formation of faith-filled leaders who are called to serve and are committed to excellence as they meet the challenges and opportunities in their communities and beyond.

WHY I GIVE
I am a graduate of the class of 1996, having attended middle school through high school. I live in the Washington DC Metro area and have been married for a little over 20 years to my beautiful and talented wife, Dr. Sarah D. Norton, PhD. We are quite active in our community via advocacy and philanthropy, involving a number of causes, including veteran’s issues, disability rights, environmental preservation, and the arts
I have dedicated my career since leaving Mount de Sales to public service, a service which actually began during my senior year of high school when I enlisted in the US Army Reserves in November 1995
I graduated from Mercer University in 2001, BA, cum laude, Phi Sigma Iota and Lambda Pi Eta, with a triple-major in Communication & Theater Arts, Christianity, Archaeology and a double minor in Latin and Anthropology. Although a seemingly eclectic course of study, my concentration on old world biblical archaeology, particularly with a focus on the apostle Paul, intricately involved aspects of all these various disciplines and further enhanced my studies
The stories of my late maternal grandfather, who had originally intended to pursue seminary and who was the foundation of the strong Catholic faith in my family, initially inspired me to follow an ecclesiastical path However, I eventually took the path to service he did when he embarked on his own successful military career after Pearl Harbor In my case, I too heard the call to service for my country after that fateful day in September 2001, much as he did, and my mission of service was redirected to the military.
As an Army Reservist, I had several options available to me, but was ultimately selected for a full Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) scholarship to attend law school and continue participation in the reserve component As such, in 2004, I became a graduate of Mercer Law School, JD, as well as commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the US Army Finance Corps via Mercer ROTC, where I served as a Cadet Major and Battalion S-3 I was also the recipient of the Distinguished Military Student designation

During my time in law school, I served in the US Army Simultaneous Membership Program in which I was both an ROTC cadet and continued my reserve service as a paralegal after transferring from my prior military occupational specialty After I graduated in 2004, I served as a Gold Bar Recruiter representing the ROTC program at Mercer, while taking the Georgia Bar Examination and waiting to report for active military service in 2005.
In April 2005, I became a graduate of the US Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) School, after being assessed into the JAG Corps following law school During my time in active service, I had the privilege of serving in various statewide, deployment, and overseas assignments as a Part-Time Military Magistrate, a Special Assistant US Attorney, trial defense counsel, prosecutor, legal assistance attorney, Officer in Charge of the Fort Jackson, South Carolina Tax Center, and the Officer in Charge of the US Army Paralegal School I left active service as a Captain in 2009.
In 2010, I became a graduate of the University of Georgia (UGA) School of Law, LLM, magna cum laude, Phi Kappa Phi, with a focus on environmental law. During my time there, I served as an intern for the US Environmental Protection Agency and the UGA Land Use Clinic, working on statewide cleanup regulations at the federal level and facilitating environmental justice in assisting the under-served minority community, Newtown, in Gainesville, Georgia, as they fought adjacent polluting entities
Thereafter I was hired to work for the US Department of Veterans Affairs in 2011 and have worked there since as a General Attorney and an Acting Veterans Law Judge. My nearly 30 years of public service in various roles and missions has been extremely enlightening and fulfilling I have been able to experience so much as well as give even more back thanks to the foundation provided by the education, values, and love given to me during my time at Mount de Sales.
I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to attend such a storied academy One where I firmly believe the future shines bright as an
example for those students, faculty, alumni, and family that recognize the importance of this community of education, love, and service as I did.
Ryan has made plans for a seven figure bequest to the Academy in gratitude for the lasting influence of Sister Mary Rosina Bayliss, R.S.M. and Coach Chester Pierce. Their example, combined with the values instilled during his years as a Cavalier, inspired Ryan and his wife, Dr. Sarah D. Norton, to make this extraordinary commitment to future generations of students.

Behind the Curtain of High School Musical:
Interview with the Directors
Please introduce yourself, including your name, role, and tenure at MDS?
Georgia: My name is Georgia Olson I am the theatre director and fine arts cohort leader, and I also teach AP Chemistry and Middle School art. This is my 19th year at MDS.
Kelley: My name is Kelley Dixson, and I am the Director of Music. I teach Middle and Upper School choruses, Beginning Band, Symphonic Band, and 6th grade Music Appreciation. This is my first full year at Mount de Sales!
What drew you to teach at Mount de Sales Academy?
Georgia: Let me tell you the story. My husband and I were about to get married and looking for our first jobs. We came to Macon for a job fair to practice before attending another in Atlanta. At the job fair, we met representatives from MDS who needed an upper school chemistry teacher and a middle school Spanish teacher. It was just what we could offer. MDS offered both of us jobs, and we were able to move to Macon and buy our first house It was an unexpected moment for us because although we liked MDS and Macon, we had not thought of moving here When we visited MDS, we enjoyed the campus energy and diverse student body, and the values of the school aligned with our values
Kelley: I’ve been hired by MDS several times over the years to coach the flute section of the band. I was always so impressed by the physically beautiful space. I love the diversity and balance within the MDS community. Knowing the prestige and historical value of the school, I am filled with pride as a member of the faculty at Mount de Sales Academy.
What inspired you to choose High School Musical as the spring production?
Georgia: I knew that I had some really talented juniors and seniors who would soon be graduating and I was looking for something that allowed us to fling the doors open and involve all who were interested. Involving so many students from all backgrounds gave us the opportunity to include athletes in various sports It was a successful building year, and we encouraged many new students to become a part of the theater. High School Musical is also fun and happy, and we all need fun and happiness in our lives.
Kelley: That was all Georgia, but her decision to use High School Musical is actually a reason why I now have a current full-time position at MDS. Being on campus to assist with High School Musical allowed me to be in the right place at the right time when the Director of Music role opened. I am so thankful I was asked by Georgia to be a part of this production.
What was the most challenging aspect of bringing this production to life?
Georgia: It was wonderful to have so many students involved, but this also came with challenges to overcome There were 50 kids on stage Two-thirds of the cast were athletes, so I was working around various athletic schedules I actually did not see the entire cast in a rehearsal until two days before opening day, and we had one rehearsal with the entire cast
Kelley: Yes, we had so many people and every song had a different configuration of the cast. I focused on trying to help our cast work through all of the kinks in all of our songs. At times, it was a lot to think about and bring together.

What was the most rewarding aspect?
Georgia: Seeing 70 children (close to 20% of our school population) involved in the theater arts was incredible More than that, seeing all of the cast spanning grades 6-12 having a blast was a highlight. What you saw on the stage represented MDS and the power of the theater arts to bring people of all backgrounds together.
Kelley: SO many things. Georgia and I have a passion for theatre and we love sharing this with others. It was amazing to watch the students catch fire and buy into the production. For me, watching Ysa, the female lead, grow in her confidence as a vocalist was very rewarding.
What do you believe our students (cast members and audience members) took away from this production?
Georgia: It’s cheesy. But the song we sang the most was We’re All in This Together. That’s the whole plot, whether you are a jock, brainiac, or theater nerd, we are all in this together. We can find more that unites us than what divides us

Kelley: Exactly. We are all in this together. It takes all of us, and there are no small parts. We needed each person and the unique gifts they brought to the production. Each student had their moment to shine.

Beyond our spring musical, what other ways can MDS students be involved with the performing arts?

Georgia: There is the Literary Competition, the Thespian Society, and the Georgia Thespian Conference Students can also be involved with chorus, band, marching band, and sing at our annual event, Candlelight Carol Students can be on the Triple T’s tech team, learning more about running show lighting and sound They can also help with set design, costume creation, and more. There truly is a way for all students to be involved and students with all skill sets and skill levels are welcome.
Kelley: Yes, we have an upper school chorale and middle school chorus. We offer beginning band and symphonic band as well. We also have the Huddle House rock band, which is new this school year. Each spring, we also invite our student body to audition for the school talent show. This is a fun production that often allows students who don’t always take the stage to share their skills with our community.
What other fine arts opportunities do we offer for our students?
Georgia: Mr. Wheat does a fantastic job with our visual arts department. We offer a range of courses and opportunities for students, including Yearbook, Art I, Advanced Art, AP Studio Art, and Ceramic Design.
Kelley: We also partner with the Otis Redding Center for the Arts (ORCA), which supports and supplements our music offerings for students I have hopes for the future as well I hope to establish an MDS podcast and incorporate more songwriting This year, our middle school music appreciation class is working on writing an original holiday song. And I plan to incorporate the handbells into our Christmas Concert, an MDS tradition that I am excited to reintroduce!
How can the community benefit from fine arts at MDS?
Georgia: The arts and creativity are a fundamental part of what makes us human, and experiencing the arts in all of its many forms is important. It leads to connection and inspiration. We are telling stories. We are evoking emotional responses. People from the Macon community attend our performances all the time. It is just a way of connecting those in the Macon area. Watching a student perform with joy is a beautiful thing, and all are welcome to be a part of this with us.
Kelley: I believe that we offer a wide range of the arts at MDS We don’t just stick to one style of Broadway, one kind of band, or one kind of chorus We are very inclusive We have a little bit of something for everyone We can find something for all to connect with and relate to, which can help everyone feel seen
How can the community support fine arts at MDS?
Georgia: There are so many ways. They can attend our shows, purchase ad space in our playbill, and become a fine arts sponsor. There’s no amount that’s too small, and we are so grateful for all of your support. Donations are vital for our program and help us purchase the rights to productions, build sets, create props, costume all student actors, keep the theatre technology updated, and more. Running a theatre program is expensive, and your support is invaluable to the health of our program.
Kelley: Yes, attend anything we have here. Donations, big or small, always help, and there are more than monetary ways to donate. If you’d like to support our music program, donations of sheet music, instruments, or your time always help. We also appreciate support with field trips, including invitations to places where students can come and learn more about the arts.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Georgia: I am just really proud of the way that the performing arts program has grown at MDS and how many of our students want to be involved in a myriad of ways. It brings a lot of life and vitality to our school culture. It’s an honor to be a part of building this program.
Kelley: Yes, I could not say this any better myself. It’s great to be a Cavalier!

Mount de Sales Academy Students Partner with Mercer On Mission to Provide Clean Water in the Dominican Republic

Nine rising seniors from Mount de Sales Academy embarked on a journey to the Dominican Republic to be a part of Mercer On Mission in the summer of 2025.
Accompanied by two faculty chaperones, the students joined Dr. Natalia Cardelino, associate professor of civil engineering at Mercer University and other members of the Mercer engineering team to bring clean drinking water to the rural community of El Cercado
a mission rooted in s
Participants stayed at Villas Andreas Retreat Center in Santo Domingo, where the Mount de Sales group joined Mercer engineers already two weeks into the project The mission was to design and install a potable water system that would serve the community of El Cercado Using concrete, rocks, and other locally sourced materials, they constructed a large water tank The structure, designed to treat and store water from a nearby natural spring, represented the first step in a two-phase effort to ensure the community’s long-term access to clean water From the outset, the project emphasized collaboration with the community members themselves Local residents were required to contribute labor, overseen by the town’s mayor, to encourage shared ownership of the system This model of sustainability was intentional to ensure the people of El Cercado retain both the responsibility and the confidence to maintain their own water supply after the mission team leaves
mount de sales’ hands-on approach to mercy in action
The role of the Mount de Sales students was critical Their work began with digging trenches and laying pipes that connected the water tank to homes throughout the town These pipes deliver clean water specifically for cooking and drinking, a basic necessity too often taken for granted in other parts of the world
“It was hard, manual labor,” said Benjamin Smith (“20), Mount de Sales chemistry and botany

p p g
all the homes as the finished product ”
With the potable water infrastructure put in place, their mission was not over The second phase focused on reforestation to preserve the purity of the spring that feeds the water system Students planted trees, and in the process, learned how reforestation directly protects water sources Smith said he plans to bring these lessons back to Middle Georgia by incorporating what they learned into his botany class at Mount de Sales
gaining global perspective

high school students are invited to apply
“Our students come from diverse faiths, backgrounds, and cultures,” Smith said “They are accustomed to open conversations with people who think and live differently That makes them uniquely prepared to build connections abroad without bias ”
looking ahead
The Mount de Sales community celebrates the success of this mission and looks forward to future opportunities to partner with Mercer University Trips like this one reflect Mount de Sales' dedication to developing young leaders who are academically accomplished and spiritually g

LITERARY MAGAZINE
For decades, students have published a literary magazine sponsored by the Mount de Sales Academy English Department. The publication, which has had different names through the years, including Inklings, Cavalier Cavalcade, The Hard Copy, up to its current masthead, Page Break, features original creative writing pieces in the form of short stories and poems as well as artwork in a variety of mediums, including digital drawings, photography, and paintings
Page Break gives Upper School students opportunities to see their work published, motivates creative students, and gives them an audience for their work Student staff members gain skills in organization, management, and teamwork They review submitted works and select which pieces will be published, edit writing pieces, create the layout for the final copy, and publicize the magazine to their peers through videos, announcements and flyers.

Our holistic program expects engagement , a thirst for knowledge and personal responsibility , while preparing students to thrive for a lifetime .
Major General Arnold L. Punaro, Mount de Sales Academy class of 1964, was the keynote speaker for the honor code assembly, where students, faculty, and staff recommitted themselves to act with honor and integrity. He is currently Chairman of the Secretary of Defense’s Reserve Forces Policy Board and Chairman of the National Defense Industrial Association
The Literary Team won the 2025 GISA AAA State Literary Championship, with three firstplace winners, four second-place winners, and one fourth place winner.
The Middle School Quiz Bowl team placed 5th nationally.

Inspired By Faith
Mercy students become living models of faith and forceful advocates for Gospel values . Grounded in our Catholic identity in the Mercy tradition , we welcome all faiths and are strengthened and shaped by these relationships . As we pursue a personal relationship with God , we strenuously follow Jesus Christ ’ s example of social justice , love and service .
We organized our first Sleepout for Daybreak on campus, an event that raises awareness and funds for individuals experiencing homelessness in Macon. As Fr. Casey reminded us, “We must allow our hearts to be broken so that we can serve and make a difference where we can. ” This event has now become an annual tradition at Mount de Sales.
The Academy’s 2030 Strategic Plan: Tradition Meets Tomorrow is unveiled on Founders Day, February 28, 2025. The five goals for the future include:
Expanding Students’ Experiences of Wonder and Holiness
Reinvigorating Pride Through Athletics
Nurturing Community Partnerships
Strengthening Our Culture of Philanthropy
Enhancing Our Campus Spaces
Campus Ministry organized an outdoor Stations of the Cross, bringing the school community together in solemn reflection during Holy Week.
Principled Leadership
Mercy students are poised to lead with their unique gifts . Prepared with an ethical and moral compass , we put Mercy values into action and work assertively for what is right We ’ re equipped to make difficult choices , learn from our mistakes and develop high emotional intelligence . As an international community , we ’ re confident in our ability to make a positive difference and push for systemic change .

A Voice For Dignity And Respect
Mercy students honor the intrinsic value of the individual and recognize God ’ s presence in each person We embrace a global vision and value differences of opinion , and are unafraid to confront hostile or hurtful attitudes . By standing up for those who can ’ t , we go beyond acceptance to help make sure everyone feels recognized and heard

“LOYAL AND TRUE, WE EVER ANSWER HER CALL.”
By Brendan O’Kane
One of my first all-school gatherings involved the students spontaneously belting out our fight song. Being new, I didn’t know the words, but a few stood out: “the greatest high school of all” and “loyal and true, we ever answer her call ”
The greatest? Gulp That felt like pressure
But as time went on, I found evidence everywhere I found it meeting MDS families, observing teachers in action, and working alongside trustees These words are not inflated; they are integrated into how we live and work.
During my first months here, I wrestled with balancing the weight of expectation with the gift of hope. Time in prayer reminded me that both belong together and both define our work.
As the year unfolded, that pressure and hope
were not mine alone They were shared by all, including students, faculty and staff, families, alumni, and trustees Together, through God’s grace, the pressure created diamonds
This year, we shined
Being on the verge of celebrating 150 years is the result of countless prayers, committed teachers, coaches, counselors, loving families, supportive alumni, generous donors, dedicated trustees, and visionary leaders. This brings me back to the second line of the fight song: “loyal and true, we ever answer her call.”
I’ve met hundreds of people who have helped us get here by staying loyal and true, by answering the call.
Let me highlight just a few of this year’s bright moments.
Campus Ministry organized an outdoor Stations of the Cross, bringing the school community together in solemn reflection during Holy Week
We launched a new Robotics Program, including a FIRST First Tech Challenge robotics team Alumni like Allen Butler (’11), who helped lead the first successful commercial Moon landing this spring, inspire these efforts
Our students excelled: Evan Lin (‘25) was recognized as School, County, and Region Star Student and awarded the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship. Evan and Julia Byron (‘25) earned admission to MIT and Williams College, while Louis McMickle (‘26) became our first student accepted into Harvard Medical School’s summer program.
Our Middle School Quiz Bowl team placed 5th nationally, and we won the Literary State Championship. Maddie Cooke (‘25) performed at Carnegie Hall, and Abi Callins (‘27) presented at Emory University. On the athletic front, our boys' varsity basketball team won the region title, and our wrestling program continued to make history; our girls finished 8th in the nation, led by two-time All-American Kirra Mitchell (‘28)
We strengthened academics with new support programs such as Freshman Forum and the Academic Mentor Program, pairing students with faculty mentors
We expanded global learning through trips to the Galápagos and the Dominican Republic with Mercer On Mission, and by creating the Judge Betty Willis Ruben Center for Global Studies Partnerships with Mercer University and the Otis Redding Foundation further enriched student experiences.
We enhanced campus operations with a new controlled-access security system.
We welcomed “Francis de Tails” or “Frankie” our golden retriever therapy dog in training.
We prepared for our 150th anniversary in 2026 with momentum. Our strategic plan, “Tradition Meets Tomorrow,” is guiding historic growth in our annual fund and record participation across the board. We partnered with parents to establish “Cavalier Family Connection,” our new parent-teacher organization designed to foster community, support the school, and connect families through volunteering and shared experiences
The lesson I’ve learned this year is simple and timeless If we place our trust in the Lord, stay faithful to our mission, and follow through on who we say we are, a bright future unfolds Challenges will come, but so will hope
We are Mount de Sales Academy. “A city built on a hill cannot be hid.” (Matthew 5:14) May we continue to shine Christ’s light, remain loyal and true, and always i ll
