2016-2017 Impact Report
message from the academy president Mount de Sales Academy is a dynamic institution. Over the course of more than 140 years, the Academy has evolved from a junior college for women and boarding school to a co-ed day school, to the community’s first integrated school and National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The Academy continues to respond to changing educational needs so that our graduates are well prepared for college, career, and life. During the 2016-17 school year, we began a five-year SACS accreditation study. Administrators and faculty members also implemented strategic changes to our structure and curriculum that will boost academic rigor and support each student to reach their highest potential.
This report highlights some of those exciting initiatives but is primarily a testament to the effect that your generosity has on the lives of MDS students and graduates. On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, let me express our gratitude for your moral support and financial gifts. We wish you and your family blessings and peace. Forever de Sales,
David Held, President
MISSION “Mount de Sales Academy, an independent Catholic school sponsored and inspired by the Sisters of Mercy, is a diverse collegepreparatory community of learners— students and teachers alike—who are poised to discover, challenged to innovate, and motivated to serve.”

“My son transferred to Mount de Sales during his junior year. The faculty, staff, and students have been very welcoming. Academically, he is challenged but also supported by the faculty. We have had a good experience at MDS.” –Anita Gustafson “Mount de Sales sees all of its kids, thinks deeply about the growth of each one, and creates opportunities that support the kids’ growth.” –Margaret Symington “As a new parent of a sixth grader, I am thrilled with the level of responsibility placed on these young people. Our children are maturing into young adults and gaining life skills as a direct result of the environment MDS fosters.” –Emily St. Peter 5
Merit-Based awards
New Classes Upper School • Automated Computer Design • Musical Theater • AP Physics II • English as a Second Language Middle School: • STEM Academy and Computer Coding—7th Grade • Leadership Development— 8th Grade
“ highlights Bedrock Curriculum The Upper School reorganized into grade-level teams rather than academic departments. Teams plan interdisciplinary study and redesign courses to integrate four essential 21st century skills: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. The new structure strengthens the Academy’s “bedrock” curriculum, those courses that are the traditional core of graduation requirements. The ninth grade team also is paying special attention to the skills and experience needed to effectively transition their students to highschool-level work. All teams are looking for ways to support students who may be struggling and engage parents in the education process. In conjunction with the Upper School’s focus on integrating content and skills, the Middle School launched a two-year strategy to infuse creativity and project-based learning into the curriculum. Accolades The junior varsity Quiz Bowl team finished 4th at State, and the varsity Quiz Bowl team finished 5th and won an invitation to the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament. This is the second year in a row that the varsity team has qualified for the national championship.
I love the new ESOL program! The students we are hosting come home energized by this learning, feeling it is really applicable to them and their needs for educational success. Thank you for adding it to the curriculum.” –Susan Feehan, Parent, International Student Host
Josiah Cotton (2020) received a “MathMovesU” scholarship, and MDS received a matching grant for innovative ideas to enhance math study. Janicka Crocker (2018) was named the Distinguished Young Women of Monroe-Bibb First Honoree in the 2018 national scholarship program. Janicka was first in the scholastic category for academic achievement and talent category for her piano performance, which she composed. Lydia Good (2017) was Macon’s only National Merit semi-finalist and recognized as the Exchange Club of Macon’s Youth of the Year. Jack Grist (2017) won the Downtown Macon Rotary Club and the divisional Rotary speech contests. Aidan Hintermaier (2018) was the only Middle Georgia high school student enrolled in the distance-learning math program at Georgia Tech. (pictured) Evan Kelley (2017) won the Foreign Language Telegraph Golden Eagle award. Stephanie Pierson (2020) won the girls division of the local Optimist International Oratorical speech contest.

“
The process of creating something entirely new, plus the possibility of designing something that could become a functional, mass-produced vehicle is exciting. I’m glad all of my hard work has paid off. It is reassuring and gives me confidence for my future as a car designer.” –Davis Kunselman (2017) CDN-GM Interactive Car Design Competition Winner Drive for Design (Fiat Chrysler) Competition Winner
highlights Diploma Endorsement Program Sophomores now have the opportunity to explore areas of academic and career interest through our new Diploma Endorsement Program. Faculty members mentor students as they design a three-year research or creative project, pursue internships, take a concentrated course of study, and prepare a senior capstone presentation. As a group, diploma endorsement students benefit from additional opportunities to develop team building, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills. This year, 33 sophomores began their study in one of six concentrations: science, design, and technology; global studies; history and humanities; Mercy in Action; business management; and healthcare studies.

poised to discover AP Service Learning Pilot Program The College Board selected MDS as an AP Service Learning Pilot Program school. As part of the program, AP environmental science students are certified water quality testers. They are monitoring a section of the Ocmulgee River and will submit their findings to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. (pictured, courtesy of 13WMAZ) Accolades The MDS Troubadours took second place in the regional One Act competition with play “The Children’s Story.” Our talented actors have placed seven years in a row.
Senior Capstone Projects
In the state Literary competition, Aidan Hintermaier (2018) won 1st place, Argumentative Essay; Miranda Brown (2017) won 1st place, Girls Solo; Molly Craig (2017) and Erin Bunkers (2017) won 2nd place, Duo Oral Interpretation; and Taylor Howard (2018) won 2nd place, Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking.
Six seniors completed capstone projects including researching mitochondrial DNA, working in an emergency room, writing a modern play with themes from Greek literature, and creating a blueprint and 3D model of a café.
Rep. Austin Scott invited five art students—Tracey Owens (2019), Nora Xu (2017), Sydney Walker (2019), Vy Diep (2018), and Zoe Wang (2018)—to place their work in the 8th District Congressional Art Exhibition.
“ Challenged to innovate highlights Academic Resource Center We continued our commitment to provide state-of-the-art technology to supplement traditional teaching methods. The Academic Resource Center (Knott Library) received 21 new computers to support graphics and flash programs used by programming classes, AP science classes, statistics and calculus classes, upper level world languages, yearbook, and visual arts. Smart Technology Six Upper School classrooms were upgraded with “smartboard” technology, which integrates different forms of media, expands the nature of the content that teachers can use in instruction, and supports a variety of learning styles. Finally, we increased network bandwidth through new fiber optic cabling to improve digital speed across the entire campus.
Our STEM class has been a fantastic experiment about the impact of Growth Mindset for our students. More than half the 7th grade has taken it each year. The kids are drawn to the hands-on projects. Along with science and engineering principles, students learn the process of ‘digging in’ by redoing, re-designing, and reflecting on their thought processes. We allow students to have the freedom to fail. The result- we have a hard time ending projects! The kids want to keep improving and testing their ideas.” –Kari Alderman, Middle School Head, STEM Teacher
Accolades The Cyberliers Upper School robotics team competed for the first time, placing 5th out of 33 teams in the first regional robotic qualifier competition. The Legoliers Middle School robotics team also placed 5th in a 12-team tournament and won the best robot design award. Twenty-one students participated in the 2017 Valdosta State University High School Model United Nations Conference. Our delegations from Japan and Brazil received Distinguished Delegation awards and individual delegates Jakey Edmonson (2019), Davis Uren (2019), and Parker Pierce (2019) received awards for Top Position Papers.

motivated to serve highlights Service Trips and Projects Students traveled to Peru during spring break to work with Kantaya, a nonprofit organization that runs afterschool programs to help Ventanilla children receive quality education. Our students helped children with arts and crafts. Fr. Frank Critch hosted a trip the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia to spend a week in service to the poor and homeless. Seniors presented an anti-bullying program at several elementary schools; juniors worked with Rebuilding Macon to freshen up old houses; sophomores read to Alex II first graders; freshmen served a meal at the St. Peter Claver Church food pantry; middle school students volunteered with Macon Outreach, raised money for the American Heart Association and read to elementary school students. 9
Soccer coaches Kenny Epps and Iain Jones led the soccer program in collecting toiletries for Macon Outreach.
“
Sometimes people assume that those who are poor just need to get a job, but I learned that it is not that easy. I learned that you should not judge someone's situation until you know what they've been through.” –Bray Makowski (2018), Poverty Simulator Participant (pictured, middle)
Intefaith Prayer Service Our interfaith thanksgiving prayer service reflected the proud diversity of MDS. With pastors from several protestant churches and the Islamic Center, the service included prayers for hope, faith, unity, and tolerance. Advanced Social Justice Juniors and seniors in our Social Justice class participated in a poverty simulator at Mercer’s Center for Community Concern, where students “lived” the day-to-day trials of the underprivileged. They experienced the difficulties of finding transportation, securing a job, and earning money as well as dealing with institutions and prejudices.
in the classroom
faculty accolades Burke Hall was repurposed as a state-of-the-art science lab (pictured) thanks to generous gifts from the Dorothy V. & N. Logan Lewis Foundation and MDS parents. The classroom and new equipment supports inquiry-based labs for honors classes and AP Physics I & II. Students will benefit from experiments in light diffraction, nuclear physics, and spectrometer readings, which must be done over several days. “The primary benefit is the space. I can have labs in motion, mass, pressure, and volume going at the same time. And, with multiple whiteboards, I can have students working in groups on complex physics problems with math analysis over several days. Our students will also be better prepared for lab work in college because they will be used to working in groups and solving complex problems,” said Mark McMahon. Danielle Adams and Mike Franklin attended the Marzano conference, which connects educators with innovative, visionary ways to provide rigorous instruction and prepare students for success in college and the global workplace.
John Hintermaier completed US Lacrosse Level 2 coaching certification. He was also a College Board AP World History exam grader, attended an AP workshop at Marist, and attended the AP National Conference in July. Duane Hunter was a College Board AP Psychology reader and exam grader. Diane Mead participated in the Cooper Union Exhibition Study in New York and studied at the Museum Education Institute, Metropolitan Met Bruer in New York. The Middle School science teachers attended a STEM Think Tank at Harpeth Hall Nashville TN. Heather Yeoman and Carla Barwick attended “Belonging in Schools: Exploring Difference & Finding Connections” to explore ways we can bridge the gap of racial diversity and inclusiveness.

Mount de Sales Academy cemented its place in the Macon music scene in 2015 with its Chastain-style concert series, Music at the Mount, which features up-and-coming artists from a broad range of genres. We thank our sponsors for making this community event possible.
“
Our community treasures its history. This day is a great day to celebrate the past, to commemorate what happened here before and to celebrate also the great future of Mount de Sales and Macon-Bibb County.” –Mayor Robert Reichert
reflecting on the past, looking to the future Mount de Sales Academy, with Historic Macon Foundation, dedicated a marker commemorating the Academy’s historical significance to the Macon community. The Academy also held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the unveiling of an 18-month transformation of its main campus. In keeping with downtown Macon’s revitalization efforts and College Hill Corridor projects, including the growth at Mercer University, the Academy added student-focused outdoor areas, plazas, and renovated green spaces to the campus. These improvements were made possible by the Phil J. and Alice S. Sheridan Foundation and have enriched the Academy’s beauty while preserving its history. The changes to campus will benefit not only students of today, but also for the many generations of Cavaliers to come.
