SARAH LUTZ Abalone (Oil and graphite on panel, 11.5"
PETE HOCKING Edge Bright (Oil on Panel, 10" x 10")
The subtle contradictions that exist within a painting are what interest me most and sustain me in my practice. Although rooted in an abstract tradition, my work makes clear references to the natural world. I spend as much time as I am able near the water: listening, watching the light, collecting. It is my intention that the images depicted, while not recognizable per se, be believable and exist logically within the environment of the painting. I emphasize the pure physicality of my materials while also exploring their alchemistic possibilities.
Pete Hocking is a visual artist & writer. In addition to being represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, he’s recently shown at the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI; the Dorado Project in Jersey City, NJ; the Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA; and at VeeVee in Boston, MA. In 2019 he was artistin-residence with Twenty Summers. He’s faculty in Goddard College’s MFA program in Interdisciplinary Arts and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. He’s a founding board member of Provincetown Commons.

His style is marked by stripped-down realistic depiction and a sense of solitude often found in the work of Edward Hopper—an artist for whom Jim has had lifelong admiration. The enduring themes in Holland’s paintings are the light and space near the ocean. Jim works in his studio in Orleans and lives in Brewster, MA with filmmaker Allison Argo. *Also in the LIVE auction.
