Building Dreams

DEAR READER: The past few years have presented the local home building industry with many challenges, but what could have weakened us has only made us stronger. The members of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod (HB&RACC) have been committed to working together to better our community, and we’re proud to report on our progress in this issue of At Home

Perhaps the most spectacular example of community synergy among our members is the recent Blitz Build. We partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod to build one home, for one family, in one week. We were able to achieve this because hundreds of people were involved and dedicated to the cause. Through donations, supplies and around the clock labor, our teams worked tirelessly—and together—to help make the dream of homeownership come true for this year’s family. Jackie, a single mom working in Falmouth, now can afford to buy a home to raise her children. This was no small accomplishment, and we encourage anyone and everyone to learn more about the important work being done by our friends at Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod—and enjoy the story on the following pages!

As busy as our industry is, Cape Cod has not escaped the nationwide crisis of the workforce shortage. We’ve felt it acutely in every trade across our membership, which is what has inspired us to tackle it head on. By the time this magazine is in our readers’ hands, we will have hosted our 6th Annual Residential Construction Career Day. With help from MassHire Cape & Islands Workforce Board, this member-led event provides hundreds of local high school students the opportunity to explore every phase of residential construction through meaningful conversations and interactions with experienced professionals. It’s our hope that these hours together have a powerful impact on our youth and guide them toward a lucrative career in our industry.

Thank you for spending some time learning about our member businesses in this issue of At Home. Inside you’ll find trusted, reliable companies for all your home building and renovating needs. I can attest to this because HB&RACC is a tightknit group of professionals; we work incredibly hard, we meet regularly to collaborate on issues facing our industry and our community, and we do what it takes to get the job done. We’re here when you need us.

I look forward to hearing about your success story with an HB&RACC member, possibly even reading about it in a future issue of At Home

Sincerely,

IF YOU FOLLOWED BLITZ BUILD CAPE COD

on social media during the week of Sept. 19, you witnessed an amazing group of dedicated and talented local professionals coming together to build one home for one family in less than one week. Every two years, Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod teams up with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod to build an affordable home. This year, the 2022 Blitz house was built for a single mom of two young children living and working in Falmouth.

The marathon home build reminds us of running a relay race. Although there is no physical baton passed to builders at the end of each project, it’s implied—from walls and windows going up to flooring, decking, and kitchen installations. Crews donated time and supplies and worked together seamlessly to achieve a common goal: to build a home for a family in need and crossing the finish line together with pride and joy. If you haven’t already, it’s worthwhile scrolling back through the videos and photos on Instagram and Facebook to see the amazing progress, from frame to finish, in just five days. Turn to page 28 to see a selection of photos from this exciting project.

As you flip through this book, you’ll notice a strong and inspiring community theme. In the story, “Transforming a Child’s World, One Room at a Time,” writer Carol K. Dumas visits with Caren Berry, founder of Colorful Kidz. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to create room makeovers for children and teenagers in need on Cape Cod.

If you love coffee, then you’ll love the story about Shepley Wood Products. The company teamed up with Cape Cod Coffee and its successful program, “Coffee for a Cause,” which supports a number of Cape Cod nonprofits. Sales of the new Civic Roast, described as a “bright, smooth blend,” will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod and Housing Assistance Corporation. Now you can feel even better about your morning routine!

Rounding out the book is a profile on Jimmy Bellew, who joined the family tile business and opened Bellew Tile & Marble in West Yarmouth in 2018 after serving in the military for many years. “It’s definitely been a blessing coming back,” says Bellew.

To continue with Bellew’s sentiment, we wish everyone many blessings and merry days this holiday season!

COLOR A Splash of

Designers and homeowners choose playful, vibrant hues to brighten rooms and create more inviting spaces.

ORANGE POWER

After learning her client’s favorite color was orange, interior designer Anne Mahoney knew she had struck creative gold. As first-time grandparents, the clients wanted a fun hangout room in their West Harwich home for their grandchildren to enjoy. The space was transformed into a colorful and inviting lounge area, where the tangerine ottoman serves as the focal point. (Anne Mahoney, owner of Anne Lydia, annelydia.com)

FEELING PATRIOTIC

This 1750s antique home, renovated by Lineal Architects + Builders, features a handcrafted walnut countertop island painted in Benjamin Moore’s Patriot Blue. Zoo Daydream ceiling lamps hang above while horizontal shiplap, with inset pantry, wraps the walls. (Lineal Architects + Builders, linealinc.com)

IT’S ELECTRIC! For a long-standing client, PSD designed and built a “social barn” in Chatham. The goal was to create an environment of pleasure and relaxation. The bar area features an acrylic bar top with lights that can be set to any color or to automatically run through the color spectrum. (Polhemus Savery DaSilva, psdab.com)

SENSATIONAL SEA LIFE

The wallpaper, designed by Kate Rhees for Spoonflower, is called Just Jellies. “We knew we wanted something fun for the kids’ bathroom, but also something they wouldn’t age out of right away,” says homeowner Laura Vollmer, adding the bathroom seemed like the perfect spot to add a coastal feel in their modern Cotuit farmhouse. “I ordered it on Etsy and couldn’t believe the amount of time I spent looking at wallpaper,” says Vollmer. Clearly, it was worth the time end effort. We bet the kids actually look forward to brushing their teeth! (Vollmer & Son Construction, vollmerandson.com)

TEAL TRANSFORMATION

In this recently renovated Falmouth house, the homeowners wanted to incorporate traditional and modern elements into the design. Goal achieved: This modern-style barn door from TruStile, painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Reflecting Pool, features clear glass panels and black decorative hardware. Transforming a Child’s World, One Room at a Time

Colorful Kidz turns dreams into reality for children and teenagers in need on Cape Cod

A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN IS A TREASURED PLACE, especially for children. It’s a sanctuary for homework, quiet time, playing, sleeping and dreaming. But not every child or teenager has that special space in their home.

Some kids sleep on mattresses or a sofa. Some kids live in a motel room with their parents and siblings and have no privacy. Some children have special needs and live in a dysfunctional room. Many parents have no means, or the vision or time, to make their child’s room a special place.

“There are just some kids falling through the cracks,” says Caren Berry, who is working to change that—one room at a time—through her nonprofit venture Colorful Kidz.

The organization’s mission is to create room makeovers for children and teenagers in need on Cape Cod.

The idea for Colorful Kidz grew out of Berry’s monthlong stay in India in 2012, when she volunteered at a Catholic orphanage she had learned about from a guest speaker at her church. In India, she witnessed incredible poverty, but also amazing courage and perseverance among the children, who still write affectionate letters to her.

“It was life-changing,” says Berry, an interior decorator and nurse, who came home determined to find a way to help children in her own community.

Her church was helping a family transition out of a shelter

The Colorful Kidz retail space in East Sandwich sells used furniture items that have been painted and stenciled by the organization’s volunteers using nontoxic paints. Volunteers also sew home accessories, such as pillows. into public housing, and Berry offered to become involved. After meeting the family, she saw what she could provide to make a difference, offering to design a bedroom for two brothers, one of whom loved baseball and the other airplanes.

“Later, when the boys saw their room makeover, their joy was immeasurable,” she recalled. “It was on that day that Colorful Kidz was born.”

Colorful Kidz is a 501(c)(3) children’s nonprofit, with a 1,000-square-foot retail space and workshop located on Route 6A in East Sandwich.

Cape Cod high school students are invited to compete in  Cape Cod Flippz on Aug. 5, 2023. Two teams will be selected to race around town at local yard sales to find specific items to flip.

Berry works with the Department of Youth Services and the foster care system to find referrals. She visits the family to assess the project, speaking to the child as well as the parent, to determine needs, a wish list and a budget. The redo is done free of charge. Sales from the storefront shop, in East Sandwich, stocked with beautifully reimagined used furniture and accessories, pay for the projects. Colorful Kidz also sells paints and accessories through its website. Volunteers paint used furniture that’s been donated to the organization, sew items for the store and assist with makeover projects, and also help with installation.

One makeover was for a teenager, who told Berry he liked to read and write.

“In order to do that, he needed good lighting,” she said. “When we asked if there was anything special he wanted or needed in his room, he told us he wanted a really tall bookcase and something to write on. He also asked if it was possible to have a mural painted on his wall. He had some very specific ideas on how he wanted it to look. We paired him with one of our favorite artists.”

The custom makeovers are mainly cosmetic—painting with a special nontoxic paint, new bed coverings, furniture, window treatments and sometimes flooring, with mattresses provided if it’s within the budget. The organization seeks donations of good, used wood furniture and new, unused items like mattresses and bed linens. A complete list is on its website.

Last year, they completed four makeovers. The goal this year is 10.

“We’re hoping to connect with more carpenters and other skilled professionals, as we can only do so much,” says Berry. “We love our senior citizens who help us out and it’s nice to get the community involved.”

The Colorful Kidz shop, 497 Route 6A, East Sandwich, is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.–3 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit colorfulkidz.org

Coffee for a Cause

Shepley Wood Products teams up with Cape Cod Coffee to support affordable housing

STARTING THE MORNING WITH A CUP OF JOE is a habit for many. Now you can feel even better about that daily ritual with your purchase of Civic Roast coffee—a special blend that helps support Cape Cod affordable housing programs.

Shepley Wood Products recently joined Cape Cod Coffee’s successful program, “Coffee for a Cause,” which supports a number of Cape Cod nonprofits. Sales of Civic Roast, described as a “bright, smooth blend,” will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod and Housing Assistance Corporation.

Shepley has always believed in the necessity of giving back to the community, participating in many philanthropic endeavors. Besides Habitat and Housing Assistance, Shepley also supports Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cape and Islands United Way and Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod through its charitable giving program.

“We are always excited to partner with like-minded organizations, such as Cape Cod Coffee, to help support important causes,” says Tony Shepley, president of Shepley Wood

Products. He refers to his charitable giving philosophy as “civic rent.” “I view ‘civic rent’ as a social obligation that we should pay back to our community, both personally and professionally. Civic Roast perfectly balances Shepley’s charitable giving philosophy with Cape Cod Coffee’s passion for roasting exceptional coffee.”

Cape Cod Coffee began offering crafted specialty blends to benefit Cape Cod nonprofit groups in 2016.

“We believe that supporting our local community is vital. One way we do that is with our line of coffees—Coffee for a Cause,” says Jan Aggerbeck, CEO of Cape Cod Coffee. “We are excited to partner with Shepley by adding the Civic Roast to support Habitat for Humanity and Housing Assistance. This will be our newest addition to our Coffee for a Cause lineup.”

Civic Roast is available in 12-ounce bags and in C-cups, both available online at capecodcoffee.com and in-store at Cape Cod Coffee’s 10 Evergreen Circle location in Mashpee.

During the week of Sept. 19, members of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod, professional builders, together with vendors, donated all of the labor, materials and supplies to build an affordable home in Falmouth purchased by a local family.

This year marks HBRACC’s fifth Blitz Build with Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod. This program makes it possible for Habitat to build more homes without overextending capacity or significantly increasing overhead. Home Builders Blitz events create relationships with local builders, many of whom become regular volunteers with Habitat and/or donors to their ReStores. Home Builders Blitz also gives local builders a chance to give back to their community and to network with other builders and suppliers.

“The Blitz Build is an amazing representation of the HBRACC membership and our commitment to our communities,” said Chris Flanagan, executive officer of the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod. “All of the materials and the time it takes to build the house have been donated. Our members are involved in every facet of the build. Building an affordable home for a deserving family is something we are all proud to be a part of.”

The 2022 Blitz Build house is one of 10 affordable homes being constructed on a 5.5-acre site on Willett Way in Falmouth.
Single mom Jackie, with her two young children, is the proud owner of a new three-bedroom ranch built in just five days.

The unassuming three-quarter Cape located in the historic Spring Hill area of East Sandwich has a significant pedigree.

The house was originally sited next door on the first land grant to Benjamin Nye, one of the founding fathers of Sandwich (1637). It was extensively remodeled in 1761 while owned by Joseph Nye, a direct descendant. It is one of many Nye houses within the Spring Hill Historic District, clustered around the small triangle formed by Route 6A and Spring Hill and Nye roads.

In 1837, the land and the 1761 house were divided into two parts. Joseph Jr. (1771–1846) moved the Cape to 10 Spring Hill Road, updating the interior and adding a kitchen ell, which included an interior well. When the railroad came through the back of the property in 1854, locals

The house was originally part of a Colonial located on an adjacent lot. Above left: A new granite stone wall was built by Joel Wisentaner of Elemental Stone Design in Onset. named the spot Nye’s Crossing. The tremors from the passing trains are still felt throughout the old house.

The house continued to be owned by generations of Nyes until 1937, when Aimee Lee Sears (niece of Martha Nye) bequeathed it to her friend, Fonnie Davis.

In 1947, renowned botanists and cranberry growers Drs. Chester and Shirley Cross purchased the house from Davis. The Crosses added trees and shrubs outdoors, and in the 1960s converted a coal shed into a “modern” kitchen as well as adding a brick-floored bedroom and a bathroom, with the bricks scavenged around Sandwich by their third son, Tim, then 10 years old.

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Tim has fond memories of growing up in the old Cape house, roaming the surrounding woods and marshes of East Sandwich, swimming in the mill pond, and gaining a deep appreciation for its nature and history. As an adult, he returned many summers to visit, eventually accompanied by his wife, Susan, and their children.

“It’s been my dream to live here,” says Tim. “I have so many wonderful memories of this neighborhood.”

Inheriting the house in 2008, and after more than 30 years

in Tallahassee, Fla., Tim, a chemistry professor, and Susan, a pediatrician, decided to make that dream come true and began planning to retire to the house at Nye’s Crossing. Overall, the house was unsuitable for modern life. The kitchen was cramped and dark; there was no bathroom on the second floor and no laundry facilities; and storage was lacking. All the major systems needed replacement including the 1920s wiring, 1940s central heating and plumbing. Air-conditioning was needed to combat the pervasive dampness. Also needed was lead paint abatement, and the refinishing of flooring, walls and trim.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Daughter Lydia and son-in-law Justin Nicholson were recruited to contribute as the number of decisions to be made was overwhelming. Each of the four had very particular ideas about the décor and how rooms should be altered, if at all, and the debates were intense, Susan recalled. Livability for a 21stcentury family, while retaining as much of the historic fabric as practical, was the goal.

The Crosses hired Tom Turcketta Inc., which specializes in building, restoration and preservation of historic homes on Cape Cod.

“Tom’s and [project manager] Jim [Craig]’s expertise and

practical design sense were just what we needed,” says Susan.

The 19th-century house was built in the era that Turcketta prefers, and the Crosses were ideal clients.

“I don’t like to take on projects that don’t keep the antique style of the house, and I look for people who really like an antique,” says Turcketta.

The house had to be emptied before any renovation could begin. Over six weeks, Susan and Tim quickly realized the house had never been cleaned out since 1837, uncovering a treasure trove of period clothing and other items, much of which they donated to local historical associations. The best one was a stocking, knitted and monogrammed by Lucy Hedges Howes Nye (1817–1901), which went to the Nye Family Association.

DISCOVERING TREASURE

In the dirt pile from digging out the new basement they found an exquisite, albeit chipped and broken Sandwich glass knob. Susan theorized it could have been made by Joseph Nye, whose occupation was listed as a “glasscutter” in the late 19th century. The knob served as an inspiration piece for the bathroom vanity knobs, sourced from a South Carolina company specializing in reproduction hardware.

Turcketta’s work included tearing down the old coal-shed kitchen, digging a basement and installing a larger kitchen; lead abatement; replacing all rotten sills, wiring, plumbing, outer doors and storm windows; then stripping, painting and reglazing the old windows, being careful with the old glass; and adding air-conditioning and a new roof on the bow-roofed

structure. Walls and trim were refreshed with new paint. The old floors remained but were refinished. The walls, floors, ceilings and trim were left largely intact. Custom cabinetry was added in the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry. The restorationrenovation is a nearly seamless blend of old and new.

“The [Turcketta Inc.] craftsmanship was simply amazing,” says Susan.

Downstairs, the old bathrooms were rearranged, expanded and modernized with new fixtures, with one including laundry facilities. A stairwell to the basement and attic was removed to increase the space in the 1837 kitchen to accommodate dining. A second-floor bedroom was sacrificed to create a bathroom with clever pullout drawers

Upstairs, a small bedroom was turned into a bathroom with custom-fitted drawers and a storage closet under the eaves.
New bathrooms with custom cabinetry by Tom Turcketta and team were part of the updating. Homeowner Susan Cross chose the glass knobs to add a pop of color.

The Master of His Craft

Tom Turcketta has built a name for himself in high-quality restoration and preservation of old and historic homes across Cape Cod.

How did you get into the building business?

I grew up in Lynn, in a family of carpenters, and I don’t recall ever seriously wanting to do anything else. My first job at the age of 15 was as a carpenter’s helper and laborer on what was known then as the poor farm in Lynn. I entered the Army at 17 and worked as the company carpenter. When I came home, I helped my older brother, building additions and second levels, doing kitchens and fire jobs (when buildings burn but can be fixed or renovated) in Lynnfield. I was drawn to the details and finer aspects of the work. I also had a fascination with hand tools and antique homes, made by hand, before there was machinery.

How did you hone your carpentry skills?

In 1975, I started attending the North Bennet Street Industrial

School in Boston, while continuing to work. I took an advanced course in carpentry and transferred into the cabinet and furniture making course, where I learned how to fine tune my skills. I learned how to sharpen, use and develop a respect for my tools—they are an extension of my hands. I learned how to draw my projects out and think them through.

When did you start your own business?

I started working for myself in the 1970s. My name spread quickly. I established a small business by 1980 working on antique homes on the North Shore with a crew of five to six employees. Most of my work was centered around the Marblehead area. In 1997, my wife and I moved to Cape Cod, and I established myself here. I started building custom kitchens and cabinetry here to get my name out there. I also

Tom Turcketta, who started working in the building trade as a teenager, has always been fascinated with hand tools and antique homes.

subcontracted work from builders working on antique house projects for them. They hired me based on my knowledge of antique houses and the fact that I was detail oriented. Once my name got out there, I became very busy again.

What is your specialty?

Building restoration and preservation of old and historic homes on Cape Cod. I prefer historic restoration. I like to work with people who really like antique homes and who want to keep the antique style of the house. I’ve probably worked on 200 in my career so far, but I’ve never counted them!

What fascinates you about historic homes?

I love 18th-century houses—the older the better, when a lot of the work was being done, until 1850, by hand. I love the feel of an old house and I love learning about its history, preserving the style of the house and its details. There are lots of challenges involved, and I enjoy that aspect. My favorite architectural era is Greek Revival, partly because it’s one of the first truly American architectural styles.

Do you collect old woodworking tools?

I have an extensive collection of 18th-century wood planes. They

can also serve as models for my work, when I need to reproduce antique molding, for example. Because they are some of the earliest signed American artifacts, I have a copy made of the planer needed to reproduce the result I’m looking for.

What advice would you give to a prospective buyer of an antique home?

Do the research before you buy. Contact a restoration expert to look at the house; we often will find things a regular building inspector would not because we have experience working on these older structures. Homeowners also are not often aware of the costs involved with an older home. Also I would advise them to hire a contractor with extensive experience on antique houses. An experienced contractor can help a homeowner to make better, informed decisions based in reality!

Do you live in an historic house?

We don’t, but I’ve added several additions and did a complete and extensive interior renovation to look like one. I gutted the house to the frame and updated all of the mechanicals, insulated it, milled all of the interior trim, and made all of the custom cabinetry throughout the house.

and cupboards built into the upstairs eaves. Under the slanted roofline, a home office at one end and a sewing room at the other end of the master bedroom were created. Every nook and cranny was turned into useful space with custom cabinetry. The house now has four bedrooms, three baths, a laundry room and a 21stcentury kitchen.

A DREAM RENOVATION TEAM

While Turcketta was in charge of the long restoration and renovation project, the Crosses had a lot of input into the project as the months went by, receiving frequent progress photos, emails and texts from the team. They visited from Florida several times, camping on site in the summer, and using the time to rebuild and paint the long picket fence and gates, and to start trimming the overgrown trees and shrubs on the property. After construction was complete, Tim built winding brick paths around the house, replaced the arbor and replanted grapevines in the same spot where the grape arbor had been, shading the old and new kitchens from the southwesterly sun.

Right: The downstairs guest bathroom sports an artful use of mixed tiles. Below: A steep staircase leads to the second floor.

The new kitchen is a large, open space, designed with the help of Lydia and Justin. It is organized with “stations” for coffee and drinks, baking, food prep and washing up. Visually, it is anchored by a huge center island that has room for four woven-seat, Shaker Workshops counter stools made from kits, with concealed USB ports conveniently placed and a glassdoored cabinet that protects cookbooks from dust and kitchen grime. The ceiling is open to the rafters, and handsome locally made copper pendants provide lighting.

STAYING TRUE TO HISTORIC PALETTE

The custom cabinets, designed and made by Turcketta’s team, are two-toned, with paint colors from Benjamin Moore’s historic palette: the lowers are Essex Green, the uppers, a white called Cotton Balls, with concealed hinges and wrought-iron handles. The chef’s range has a pot-filler faucet mounted behind it. The kitchen used to have a hand pump for water, connected to the old interior well, and Tim insisted on keeping the old fixture as a nod to the house’s history. After wire brushing and repainting, it was mounted next to a modern faucet on the island.

The long renovation took nearly 16 months, but the Crosses and Nicholsons are thrilled with the result: an antique house made for contemporary living.

“We meshed Colonial and Victorian elements; the house has been eclectic from the start, and we like it that way,” said Susan. “Tim’s mother had told us, ‘There are enough museums in Sandwich, this place should stay as a family home.’ It’s been quite the journey, but I think we have achieved that.”

Homecoming for Jimmy Bellew

The former Green Beret, owner of Bellew Tile & Marble in West Yarmouth, draws upon family experience and leadership lessons from serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After serving in the military from 2008 to 2015 and settling into a post-service job, Jimmy Bellew was enjoying life in Kentucky with his wife and daughter. But the pull of home can be strong, and that’s why he opened Bellew Tile & Marble in West Yarmouth in 2018.

The storefront, which he said carries the largest selection of porcelain, stone and glass tile on Cape Cod, is the second for the Bellew family, after decades of operating in Rockland.

“There are a lot of tile stores. People have a lot of options and a lot of good options,” says Bellew. “The only way we can really separate ourselves is through our service. We focus on customer experience from the first time they step in the showroom until the last tile is grouted. Probably 85 percent of the people who walk in the door either worked with us or their neighbor worked with

us or their builder worked with us and had good experiences. That’s going to keep us going and growing.”

Bellew Tile & Marble also draws upon long-term family experience. Jimmy’s grandfather was a tile installer, and his parents’ 29 grandchildren seem likely to make it a fourth generation in the tile business eventually.

“My dad was a tile installer with eight kids, and about 30 years ago, he saw a need for a tile store,” says Bellew. “He took a big chance and things just kind of rolled from there to the point where they have 20-plus employees. My mom is still very involved. My brother Joe, my brother Steven, and

my sister Rebecca work there as well.”

You might think that the father, the late Tom Bellew, would have put some of his children to work in his showroom during summer vacations, but that’s not the case.

“All through high school and college, my dad wouldn’t let us work for him,” says Bellew, 40. “He made us work for tile installers. Just in case we ever came into the family business someday, we’d know the installation side of the business. All through high school and college, I worked on job sites for other local tile installers.”

After graduating in 2005 from Liberty University in

The expansive showroom at Bellew Tile & Marble features the largest selection of porcelain, marble and glass tile on Cape Cod. Choosing tile can be an overwhelming experience, and Bellew Tile prides itself on its customer service to make that process easier.

Virginia with a double major in business management and sport management, Jimmy worked for Bellew Tile, including stints in the warehouse and showroom, for a few years and then left to join the military.

“My entire life, I wanted to join the Army. It’s just something that I always had in my heart,” says Bellew. “I joined the service in 2008 and served for about seven years. When I got out, I went to work for General Electric Aviation in Kentucky, but I kept getting pressure from my brother Joe, in particular, to move up this way and open a second store.

“I resisted it for quite a while, because I had a good

thing going down there. We flew up about four and a half years ago, looked at this property we’re in right now, made an offer and the rest is history.”

Changes and consistency

Some things have changed in the tile business, he says. “My grandpa would go to someone’s house with a briefcase and show them a few four-by-four tiles and ask, ‘Do you want the speckled pink or the solid pepper or the white?’

“Now when some people come in, it’s an overwhelming experience. They haven’t picked out tile in 20 years, or

maybe it’s a young couple and they’ve never selected tile.

“We walk them through the process. It’s a noncommission environment. We’re big on people taking samples home and coming in as many times as they want or need to. You should spend the time because you don’t want to be replacing your tile every five to 10 years.”

Some things in the business barely change. “People like stone looks, and subway tile isn’t going anywhere,” he says.

One trend he’s seen is a small movement toward larger tiles. “Even just four years ago, when we opened this location, a lot of installers and builders would think a 24inch by 48-inch tile was absolutely crazy, and we thought the same thing. But people see the European trends on Pinterest, and now people are coming in and asking for it.

“Four years ago, it was almost all gray tones. Now we’re seeing some of that warmth come back in with beiges and warmer grays.”

Leadership lessons

At the end of his time in the Army, Bellew was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group (where his father had served during the Vietnam War), as a Green Beret and member of

a HALO team. His service included deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bellew’s time in the military gave him a chance to learn leadership skills through observation and practice. Those skills are useful in his new line of work.

“I’ve got to preface it with the fact that I’ve got still a lot to learn, but I was around some incredible leaders,” he says.

“I saw that leadership is not just visibility, but creating a team environment where we’re all working together. I’m not behind a closed door somewhere. The biggest thing for me is treating people the way that I want to be treated.”

He also gained valuable life lessons playing hockey in high school and college.

“I wasn’t the best player on the team by any means,” says Bellew. “I had to figure out where I fit in, knowing what my strengths are and what aren’t my strengths, and feeling OK about relying on other people.

“Coming into this business, I wanted to micromanage everything the first six or 12 months, but I think I’ve gotten slowly better at letting go of certain things. I have some incredible employees here, and many of them are better than

me at certain things. Even if they’re not, I have to let them struggle and learn sometimes, because they’re not going to get to the next level otherwise. If I have people in place that I can rely on, that frees me up to do some of the more important things that maybe are my strengths.”

Family time

Bellew’s family now includes two daughters and a son, ranging from 6 to 10 in age. They live in East Sandwich, but frequently get back to Hingham, where he was raised, for large family gatherings.

“We still have such a close-knit family,” says Bellew. “We all go camping together every year at a big bluegrass festival in August—45 people and it’s just our immediate family.

“It’s really neat that we can all do that, because you hear horror stories about family businesses. That was one of the things coming back in that made me nervous, but I knew that they had done it for so many years.

“It’s definitely been a blessing coming back. My dad was here just about every day before we opened, and he and my uncle helped me hang the flat wall and pour the floor. I’m on the phone with the Rockland store throughout the day. It’s great interacting with them daily.”

The staff at the Rockland store was a key resource in helping Bellew get the West Yarmouth location up and running, he said. “They still help us out and we try to help them out, but we have our own team here now.”

IN MEMORY

Jimmy’s father, Tom Bellew, died unexpectedly on Aug. 19, 2022. He founded Bellew Tile & Marble in Rockland and his wife, Maggie, and several children continue to work in the business today. He was beloved by his eight children and 29 grandchildren.

Patience

After three years of renovations, a family can finally kick up their feet and relax in their dream summer home in Dennis.

Pays Off

PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMBER JANE BARRICMAN

The rambling Dennis Village house was an eyesore on a street lined with impeccably restored antique and well-maintained newer homes. The exterior was a mishmash of architectural styles; the original 1825 farmhouse had been expanded over the years with two additions that didn’t align with the historic architecture. Inside, rooms lacked the flow that contemporary homeowners seek and needed updating in general. However, its potential for use as a summer house somehow resonated with the Cogswell family, who bought the property in 2018.

Today, the stunning home is as beautiful outside as it is inside, thanks to the vision of homeowners Anne and John Cogswell and the creative execution by the design-build team from McPhee Associates of Cape Cod. The project took three years to complete, hampered by the constraints of the pandemic.

The house was designed to be a summer home for the

Cogswells, who live in Worcester, and their family, which includes two married sons and five grandchildren.

“We wanted to do this in phases, as John hadn’t retired yet,” explains Anne.

“We were shooting for something like this, for the whole family to come down,” says John about their attraction to the property.

There was a lot of back and forth between the owners and McPhee throughout the process—the Cogswells receiving photo updates along the way and visiting the site during the process. The couple worked closely with architectural designer Kendra Seifert and project manager Wyman Brooks, Jr.

“Working directly with Anne and John was a lot of fun,” says Brooks. “They were most accommodating in helping us resolve inevitable issues that arose throughout the project. It is an atypical situation that can often create more problems than

not. In this case, however, we proved to be an outstanding team as evidenced by the extraordinary product that resulted.”

A seamless blend

The main challenge for McPhee was to blend the three separate structures to make the house more appealing from the outside. The plan was to keep the 19th-century farmhouse on the left and the section known as the cottage on the right, with extensive renovations to both, while razing the odd-looking midsection, known as the barn.

“Also complicating the build, needless to say, was dealing with the pandemic amidst it all,” says Brooks. “We lost windows of time with miscellaneous crews having to pause here and there. Supply chain issues also haunted us a little bit. We learned quickly it was necessary to continue to push forward even if out of sequence to make the best of a

situation that was certainly less than ideal.”

The yard, which had been choked with plantings, was refreshed by McNamara Bros., who created a timeless, subtle palette with evergreens, grasses and flowering perennials, such as butterfly bush and hydrangea, and installed a lawn that wraps about the property.

New, energy-efficient windows mimic the original 19th-century windows in the oldest part of the Cogswell house. Below, a pair of comfy chairs near the built-in cooking station creates a warm and inviting atmosphere on the outside patio.

History meets modern living

The historic farmhouse now contains a new custom kitchen anchored by a large island. Lower cabinets have floating shelves above, creating even more openness. The space also includes a beverage bar and dining area, a laundry room, guest bedroom, and an en suite bedroom with a fireplace. The second floor has two bedrooms, including a unique bunk room with four, queen-sized bunk beds (with childfriendly steps between them) to accommodate the grandkids. Black-framed double-hung windows replicate the historic architecture, yet are modern and energy efficient.

The former barn holds a large, beamed family room with a stone fireplace that opens to an expansive bluestone patio that is the epitome of outdoor living with a built-in grill, a fire pit, plenty of seating and a covered porch with heaters. Stone walls lend privacy to the patio.

“Some of the more substantial challenges at this project were simply the very unique nature of the structure,” says Brooks, “and we had to think and design on the fly at times in order to best accomplish the desired look and outcome the Cogswells wished for. Trying to marry both sides seamlessly proved ultimately to be an extremely satisfying accomplishment.”

Above, the open-plan kitchen with two-toned cabinetry, floating shelves and a center island is a home chef’s dream. Below: the main entrance to the family room looking into the primary bedroom suite. Anne Cogswell gathered home décor from a variety of resources to decorate their expansive summer home.

The Cogswells’ primary bedroom suite in the cottage includes a kitchenette, laundry room, lavish bathroom and a loft office space for John.

The interiors flow seamlessly together with wideplank oak floors that have radiant heat beneath and handsome black interior doors (sourced from an Oregon manufacturer) throughout. The doors have wrought-iron hinges and strapping, one of many nods to the home’s farmhouse architecture, along with sliding barn doors separating the family room from kitchen and the kitchen from the guest room.

Renovate and repurpose

The Cogswells were also respectful of the historic nature of their property, salvaging elements when able from the renovation and repurposing them into the new design. Wood from the old barn was used to create an artful feature wall in the kitchen dining area and for new fireplace mantels. An old transom window from the 1825 side is displayed above the barn door in the family room, and some old beams were utilized in the kitchen and two of the bathrooms.

Upstairs, the “bunk house” features four queen-sized bunk beds to accommodate visiting grandchildren. The stained-glass fish on the bunkhouse beds were made from remnant glass pieces stained by glass artisan Patrick Todoroff of Glass Graphics Studio in Hyannis. Below: the first-floor en suite bathroom features repurposed beams. Opposite page: Wood from the original house was repurposed into an artful display wall.

“We were able to use a couple of the original exterior door steps with the boot cleaners still in them on two doors going outside,” says Anne, who served as the interior decorator.

“I wanted people to come in here and feel at home,” she says. “Everything I chose was very mindful.”

Her very personalized and eclectic décor flows together into welcoming spaces, where anyone stepping into this house could envision themselves living here. While the couple’s daughtersin-law were invited to design their guest rooms, their choices mesh with Anne’s design sensibilities.

Wallpaper makes a statement

Each space is unique. Anne is a big fan of wallpaper and used it carefully throughout the house, such as in the family room, where she chose a playful beige-and-white pattern of cottages, and in a hallway, where a blue grasscloth gives an upscale touch and pop of color. A photo she took of Ryder’s Cove in Chatham was made into wallpaper that runs up the stairwell in the farmhouse. She had the finish carpenter apply a shou sugi ban finish on a custom bathroom vanity. (Originating in 18th-century Japan, shou sugi ban is a method of preserving wood by charring it with fire then coating it with natural oil, resulting in a scorched finish with a crackled look.) The technique was also used to bring character to the wide pine floors in the bunk room.

Thoughtful details give a custom flair to the Cogswell house, such as this cottage wallpaper in the family room. Below: the bedroom in the primary suite with fireplace.

The Cogswells reused parts of the old house throughout, including this transom window mounted above a modern sliding barn door separating the kitchen and original farmhouse from the central family room.

Anne sourced furniture and accents from various places (Etsy and HomeGoods, in addition to higher-end retail shops) to achieve just the right touch for a particular room. Each room is personalized with one-of-kind accents, such as a stained-glass mermaid window in the primary bedroom suite; mermaid tails that add a touch of whimsy to the banister leading up to John’s office; turquoise glass knobs that give a pop of color to white cabinets in the primary bedroom’s kitchenette; and the vintage cutlery that form fanciful pendants over the kitchen island.

“I’ve been building for more than 35 years. This project, this home, may be my favorite of all time,” says Brooks.

After three years of reimagining and rebuilding this home, the Cogswells said their dreams have come true.

“Yes, of course, there were obstacles in many different forms to overcome, but on this project we worked closely with McPhee, their subs and our own,” says Anne. “We feel it was such a positive process and everyone was always extremely professional and respectful. We were very fortunate to have worked with all of them!”

A Playful, Modern Farmhouse Vibe

For builder Peter Vollmer and his wife, Laura, it was a dream come true to build their own custom house in Peter’s hometown of Cotuit.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN CUTRONA

EBuilder: Vollmer & Son Construction, Inc. Cotuit, 508-776-2058 vollmerandson.com

verything about Peter and Laura Vollmer’s charming farmhouse-style home in Cotuit connects to their family and their work. As president of the building company Vollmer & Son Construction, Inc., Peter has been taking over more of the day-to-day operations from his father with whom he has been working for decades. Meanwhile, he and Laura have grown their own family to include two daughters, two-yearold Allie and five-year-old Piper.

These two focuses led the couple to find some land to build on in Peter’s hometown of Cotuit, and as it turned out, they ended up living quite near to both their families. “The original landowner put three lots up for sale all at the same time,” says Laura. “Peter’s parents bought a lot right behind our current house to build their new home, while our lot actually sat on the market for a bit before we eventually purchased it.” She adds that her own father and stepmom also recently bought a summer home just down the street from them. “Peter is actually renovating it as we speak,” she says. “Everybody is close by, which is so nice to have, especially for our kids.”

The Vollmers’ contemporary farmhouse-style home features a classic white and black exterior.
Dark cabinetry in the mudroom gives an attractive richness to a utilitarian space.

Above: Using natural wood throughout the house was a design priority for the Vollmers. “We love the rich look of real wood, whether it be stained or true mahogany,” says Laura Vollmer.

At right: One aspect the couple agreed on was to include wood accents in every part of their home, such as this contemporary take on a sliding farmhouse door.

It had been Peter’s dream for some time to build his own house, and while the couple appreciates the seaside style of many of his residential projects, they wanted to explore something a bit different for their home. “We are both Cape Cod kids who grew up here, so we do love coastal-décor design, but we just wanted to play around with a modern farmhouse vibe,” says Laura. “This was several years ago before that look really exploded on the scene. We’re kind of nestled in the woods, so our land already had that rural, backroads feel, even with Shoestring Bay right down the street.”

Classic black and white sets the tone

To fulfill their vision of a contemporary farmhouse, they began with the concept of a two-story, white-fronted house with black garage doors and window trim. “I just knew I wanted that white and black,” says Laura. “You can’t get any more classic than that. I really feel like it set the tone for the whole house.”

She says that she and Peter were on the same page about everything during the design process, which made it a lot of fun. One aspect they agreed on right away was to include wood accents in every part of their house. “We love the rich look of real wood, whether it be stained or true mahogany, and with Peter being in the business that he’s in, and having worked extensively with wood, it’s definitely an element that we wanted to highlight.” Laura’s father was a custom cabinetmaker, so she “literally grew up in a wood shop,” and she feels you can never go wrong with natural wood.

Their choices reflect an intriguing blend of the traditional and the imaginative. The ceilings on the farmer’s porch are mahogany planks rather than the conventional white or blue painted boarding. “We left its natural color and just put a clear

stain on it so that it would offer a fairly neutral palette that felt timeless,” says Laura. Throughout the house, they followed this neutral color scheme on the floors, allowing themselves to experiment with brighter colors for trim, cabinetry and décor.

A touch of playfulness

“We definitely had fun with tile and fixtures,” says Laura. The common areas have more muted selections of deep grays, ebonies and whites, while the children’s sea-creature-themed bathroom is a stunning pop of color and pattern. “Our cabinetmaker called and said, ‘Are you sure you meant to pick fiesta orange for the vanity?’ And we were like, ‘Well, we think we’re sure!’” she laughs. “Now that it’s there, it’s just so awesome, and we’re so glad we chose it.”

From the bright and welcoming kitchen, the family’s chocolate lab, Kona, gazes out to the wooded setting of the Vollmer’s Cotuit farmhouse.

The Vollmers experimented with interesting patterns in tile and fixtures in the kitchen to complement the neutral tones of the floors and walls.

Below, a charcoalcolored fireplace pops against the white wood walls of the living room.

Despite the challenge of leveling the lot—“We had to bring in thousands of yards of fill!”—Laura says the build overall was a very smooth process. It helped that Peter has 20 years of construction experience and could use all his trusted subcontractors. He also closely collaborated with their architect at Eckstrom Home Designs. “We had a really strong idea of what we wanted going in, and with each of them having a sort of younger, innovative mindset, were we able to do things a little differently.”

As the builder, Peter was also able to make changes in real time. “We had a set of architectural plans that match very closely to what is built, but there were things we wanted to alter as we went along,” says Laura. “We flipped around our entire main bedroom because Peter could do it without any back and forth with the architect.”

Ultimately, their three-bedroom, three-bathroom home came in at around 2,800 square feet, and she and Peter have allowed a few of his customers to walk through. Laura says she has noticed that several of them have incorporated some of the elements into their own custom-built Vollmer houses. She compliments her husband’s design aesthetic, as well as his construction expertise. “He is very good at visualizing things and has a great eye,” she says. “His clients really appreciate that kind of input from him during the planning and building process.”

Most important, the family absolutely loves living in their new home. “We are going on our fourth summer in the house,” says Laura, and we are just over the moon about it.” It was a combined labor of love and vocation, and their Cotuit Farmhouse has become their dream home come true.

At left, deep blue horizontal wall boards in the primary bedroom add depth to the color scheme but stay true to the Vollmers’ vision of wood throughout their home.

A vanity in fiesta orange and vibrant jellyfish wallpaper, designed by Kate Rhees for Spoonflower, adorn the children’s bathroom. “We definitely had fun!” says Laura Vollmer.
