Lahore, the cultural capital and the heart of Pakistan, is home to the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). With a historical legacy of more than a thousand years, the city has produced countless scholars, poets, writers, intellectuals and scientists.
Established in 1985, LUMS is ranked as the number 1 university in Pakistan and 111th in Asia, according to the QS Asia University Rankings 2016.

History
LUMS is a unique university with a reputation for outstanding achievements. These are reflected in the intellectual accomplishments of its students, as well as the originality, commitment and research of its faculty. Over the years the University has established a reputation for academic excellence and has received great acclaim for its programmes from within and outside the country.
The last three decades have seen an accelerated rate of development in almost every direction.
Keeping in mind the national and international needs and trends, education has been kept current and relevant. As new areas of study and research emerged, so too have relevant University departments, schools and research centres, and with them new teaching courses.
LUMS was established by sponsors from the country’s major private and public sector corporations. These sponsors were aware of the need for a national university which would provide rigorous academic and intellectual education, at par with the leading universities around the world.

The City
Situated on the banks of the River Ravi, Lahore, Pakistan’s second largest city is the historical, cultural and educational capital of the country. The city has been the cutural capital of the Punjab province for centuries and has seen the comings and goings of many kings, emperors and rulers from different cultures and backgrounds. Lahore has absorbed these diverse influences achieving a unique sense of history.

Har Gobind Khorana (1922-2011)
• Studied at the University of the Punjab, Lahore during 1940’s
• Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1968 for work on genetic code
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
• Lived and worked in Lahore as staff of the Civil and Military Gazette during 1880’s
• Nobel Prize in Literature 1907 for his various works, including “Kim”
Abdus Salam (1926-1996)
• Studied and taught at Government College Lahore during 1940’s and 50’s
• Nobel Prize in Physics 1979 for work on unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions
Arthur Holly Compton (1892 – 1962)
• Worked at the University of the Punjab, Lahore
• Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for discovery of the Compton effect, which demonstrated the particle nature of electromagnetic radiation
Subramanyan Chandrasekhar (1910-1995)
• Born in Lahore on October 19,1910
• Nobel Prize in Physics 1983 for work on evolution of stars

The University
LUMS houses four schools; the Suleman Dawood School of Business; the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Syed
Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering and the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law, offering a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate degrees.
At the graduate level, programmes offered include the MBA, Executive MBA, MS Chemistry, MS Biology, MS Physics, MS Computer Science, MS Economics, MS Mathematics and MS Electrical Engineering. Doctoral programmes are offered in Management, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
LUMS also offers a wide array of executive courses through the Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC), which was established with support from the Rausing family of Sweden. Since its inception the centre has maintained its position as one of the finest institutes offering executive education in Pakistan.
The academic programmes offered at LUMS include undergraduate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Economics and Politics, Political Science, Anthropology and Sociology, English, Accounting and Finance, History and Management Science. Also offered is the unique BA-LL.B Programme for those who want to major in Law. Courses are taught in English and students have the freedom to explore their interests in a variety of subjects before choosing their majors.
In addition to the academic programmes, the University conducts research funded by various multilateral agencies, industry and government. Active research keeps the faculty in touch with the current business environment and enables them to gauge future directions. Research initiatives are also conducted under several research centres.

Faculty & Research Excellence
The excellent faculty at LUMS includes 190 PhDs from some of the world’s finest institutions, such as Cambridge, Oxford, MIT, Berkeley, Harvard and Stanford, among others. Regular involvement with international conferences and publications keeps LUMS faculty abreast of global education trends. Moreover, eminent visiting scholars further diversify and enrich the learning experience. LUMS aspires to be a leading think-tank known internationally not only for the dissemination of knowledge, but also for the creation of new ideas and innovations that would have a positive impact on society. The University’s ambitious attitude towards research means that it is constantly investing in world-
class facilities. The importance of research is highlighted by the number of grants generated in research funding each year. The University is also committed to ensuring that academic research and learning are not two separate bodies. The research conducted guides learning and ensures that it is up-to-date and relevant.

Campus Facilities
The university campus, spread over 100 acres, includes excellent on-campus accommodation, world class sports facilities, a state-of-the-art library, a variety of dining facilities and much more. Students also benefit from a diverse student body. They have the opportunity to meet people from all over the country and overseas, and learn about other cultures. There is an incredible atmosphere on campus, coupled with convenience and safety for all students. All facilities are a short walk from each other, ensuring that students have easy access to everything they need. The campus is adjacent to
the Defence Housing Authority, a well-developed suburb of Lahore with shops, restaurants, hospitals and other facilities. LUMS also offers separate on-campus accommodation for male and female students. There are four residential colleges which comprise of ten residential buildings. Each hostel block offers a friendly and secure environment to its inhabitants, and is equipped with a wide range of facilities including WiFi, TV lounges, laundry rooms, kitchens and easy access to dining facilities. Dedicated hostel staff is accessible to students for help at all times.
