CONTEXT

1 MOBILE URBAN BARRIER

PROBLEM

The presence of urban furniture, such as barriers, has a negative impact on the visual appeal of the city and can be unattractive.

GOAL

Design a mobile barrier that is visually pleasing, composed of a singular material, lightweight, affordable, and stable enough for the streets of Rome.

INSPIRATION: EXHIBITIONS AND ROME 4 ALINA ZEMLIANOVA
product design individual project

THE SOLUTION

The barrier is a wave tied with a wire and supported by three legs, ensuring its stability. The individual barriers are connected to create a continuous wave with smooth transitions between each element. Additionally, there is a closing element at the ends of the wave.

THE PROJECT IS FOR THE JUBILEE OF 2025 IN ROME

MATERIAL

Stainless Steel (AISI 304)

CONNECTIONS

The barriers connect by using varying cross-section diameters, creating a minimalistic look. The connection's strength relies on a rivet with a spring on one side and a rivet hole on the other.

STORING

By placing the barriers next to each other, the system saves space and creates an aesthetically pleasing pattern.

MECHANICAL SOLUTION

Following completion of my studies in engineering, it is important for me to be precise and be sure that theory will converge with practice in the development of a new product.

FUSION 360 SOLUTION DIMENSIONS

The barrier deformation is minimal when subjected to a 300 Newton load that is perpendicular to and on top of it.

BOLSIUS GIFTING CANDLE

product design individual project

PROBLEM

A candle is rarely seen as a gift when you go to visit. It is challenging to present candles as an unobtrusive but surprising gift.

EMOTIONS THOUGHTS

Excited Interested Curious Excited Joyful Happy Frustrated Requires effort but excited Doubtful

"Wow, I'm going to meet my friends!"

"What might an inviting friend like as a gift?"

"I want to choose something to brighten up our evening"

"It can be a candle! But which one?"

"I wonder if my friend will like the gift"

"I'm glad I'm doing a surprise!

My friends will appreciate it"

"Yay, they weren't expecting anything! They and I are happy with the gift choice"

"The atmosphere of the meeting is so warm and cozy!" "The evening was great and the invitee will be able to enjoy the candlelight and afterwards"

CREATING AN IDEA

The candle is a cone that will burn in a spiral because the wick is twisted inside the mold.

And at the bottom there will be a surprise - a minimalistic candle stand, which will make the user who received the gift think about buying and using candles.

PROTOTYPING

I printed 3D models and created a silicone mold based on the cone model.

Subsequently, I removed the plastic model and poured wax in its place

1 - Fixing a 3D model in a form

2 - Filling the first layer of silicone

3 - Filling the second layer of silicone

4 - Pouring wax into a ready-made silicone mold

WICK ATTACHMENT

I experimented with 3 different methods for wick attachment. After the wax in the silicone mold dried, I attached the wick from the inside with additional melted wax. This is the most effective method.

BURNING

My prototype burns evenly in a spiral for over 2 hours, and with Bolsius wax, this time will extend significantly.

12 ALINA ZEMLIANOVA

PACKAGING

The adhesive paper packaging, in a spiral design, serves as an intuitive representation of the candle's spiral burn. Furthermore, it offers additional support to the ceramic base.

CONCLUSION

The final design of the candle adheres to the signature Bolsius style: minimalist shapes, colors, and concept. The candle surprises, as such a simple gesture - giving a candle as a gift - resolves the challenge of choosing a present.

PROBLEM

Souvenirs can be trivial and uninteresting, particularly in popular tourist destinations such as Rome.

GOAL

Design a novel souvenir and service that is customized and engaging for individuals.

USER’S
ALINA ZEMLIANOVA

Our team designed a telescope that enables users to add three distinct impression lenses, resulting in a one-of-a-kind experience that can be shared with loved ones when they return home. This service will be offered in multiple tourist cities, creating a collection of distinct and irreplaceable memories, like a photo album.

VIDEO SLIDES

KIOSK IN FRONT OF THE MUSEUM

USER

The user chooses how many and which of his/her photos to print and for the right and left sides chooses lenses from the base collection.

PROCESS:

Seller crops photos to fit lenses. And then the machine prints photos on lenses (30 minutes). The seller packs the telescope and personalized lenses and waits for the user to come back for them.

PACKAGING OF LENSES HOME

If a loved one or friend cannot come on a trip, then user can print his / her photos and feel the presence of a person nearby through a telescope.

PHOTOGRAMMETRY

GOAL

Compare manually created 3D models and 3D models generated from photos. Provide product communication and learn how to program in Grasshopper.

DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS

I used the Rhinoceros 3D program to build 3D models and define the dimensions and the Metashape program to create a photogrammetric 3D model of the glasses cover.

3D MODELING

1 The main form was built according to the photos and dimensions.

2 The ukulele handle was built. Complex surfaces were built from curves.

3 Each surface blends seamlessly into the other using the tungensy setting.

DETAILS

4 The strings were constructed by extruding a circle along a long curve.

1 The curves were created from photos and dimensions of a real object.

2 A complex surface was built. The curve from the top view has been extruded into this surface.

3 Unnecessary surfaces were cut o . The corners of the connection are rounded.

4 The model has been duplicated 4 times with the mirror tool. The metal mechanism was constructed from a single cylinder that is cut into pieces.

MATERIALS TESTING

ACADEMIC FOCUS

For a period of 3 years of my bachelor’s degree in materials science, it has been my academic focus to perform tests on diverse materials, such as metals, gemstones, glass, ceramics, plastics, and timber, by using advanced technology equipment that is available to me at St. Petersburg Mining University.

The purpose of my experimentations has been to gain practical knowledge pertaining to the defects of these materials, their capacity for resisting corrosion and conducting electricity, and their characteristic levels of rigidity, robustness, malleability, and flexibility.

JEWELRY + BLACKSMITHING

I enrolled in a jewelry class and began crafting my own jewelry using the transparent enamel-on-metal technique.

In addition, I gained experience working at a blacksmith workshop and fashioned a coffee maker from brass, along with various hammered copper dishes.

OF ONE OF THE 7 WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

I took part in a volunteer initiative for the revival of an ancient city Ephesus where my responsibilities included unearthing buildings, enameled ceramics, coins and bones.

Moreover, I was involved in cleaning wall paintings and floor mosaics.
