C U LT U R A L S I G N I F I C A N C E - The staff of asclepius shows a snake wrapped around a staff, sometimes with a chalice, is associated with health, medicine, and healing - Linked to greek mythology - Snake is a symbol of rebirth and transformation, related to the shedding process of the snake, the snake looks reborn - Snake is a symbol of immortality, the shapes they are able to make with their flexible bodies are very closely tied to a circle or a spiral as a symbol of this. - Tied to serpent god DAHN from the African Dahomeyen culture, it circles the earth and prevents it from falling apart - Tied to Egyptian god RA and all creation that originated from coiled serpent called Amduat - Native American cultures saw snake as a symbol of earth, their close proximity to the ground as a creature with no limbs is seen as a symbol of fertility, prosperity, and fruitfulness - Can also be a symbol of a bad omen, in a dream, can show deception
