David Kumnick, Booleroo Centre SA
Is this 12m x 24m x 5.1m Combination Grain-Fertiliser-Hay Shed this year’s “Shed of the Year?” See inside to find out…
Once again it’s been an interesting year at Grant Sheds! We’ve helped many farmers realise their shed dreams, despite tough conditions.
And this year we thought we’d continue last year’s fun with Grant Sheds “Shed of the Year” where we pick the category of shed that has helped farmers the most.
How did we choose “Shed of the Year”?
We used three criteria:
1. Helpfulness of shed to farmers
2. Numbers sold (not necessarily the “most” sold)
3. What we really loved about the type of shed
4. Innovative ideas
Which shed will it be?
Read on to discover the finalists and overall winner… PLUS… the “centrefold” reveals how Respected Farmers saw their 2025 calendar year.
And, if you’re looking for your own end of year reward, check out the “Shed of the Year” special offer on the back page. You deserve it!

This popular size is 12m x 24m x 5.1m and available in other sizes as well. THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Respected Farmers look back on the year that was 2025

Scott & Rachel Fraser, Quorn SA
Cropping, Cattle & Rodeo competition family.
Property ‘Coolangatta’ 6000 acres
Farming Challenges: This 2025 season has been terrible with almost no rain. We’re unlikely to even get the header out this year. We have managed to cut a little hay. Rachel says, “Scott has a ‘never quit’ attitude. He’s so tough. He has more ‘heart’ than anyone I know.”
Highlights: We turned the lack of rain into an opportunity and took the time to join our sons, Cody and Kolt, on their American and Canadian rodeo circuits. It’s a privilege to be able to travel around the world and follow the boys in the sport they’ve chosen and for Scott to reminisce about his own Rodeo Champion journey at similar events 25-30 years ago.
Plans for 2026: Prepare to ‘go again’ with our cropping enterprise, aiming for minimal costs and utilising what we have and hope for a better harvest in 2026. Scott is always decisive and optimistic. Even if a dry year is forecast, he says, “It’s better to sow something, otherwise only weeds will grow.”

Phil & Ingrid Combe, Merriton SA
5th & 6th Generation cropping and sheep farming
Property ‘Azile’ 6500 acres
Challenges: Feeding livestock in autumn & winter for the first time ever & having to buy hay in. Looking after paddocks after last year. Dry seeding again which is hard on machinery & chemicals. Germination tests on seed after having to resow some barley with poor emergence.
Highlights: Nice to see paddocks green & with cover on them. Crops looking pretty good for the amount of rain which has been timely but, like everyone, would have loved one more good rain in September. Sheep & lamb prices at record levels. Milestone birthday with a trip to Tasmania with family and partners.
Plans for 2026: Not planning to change much. Hoping for an early break plus good health and keep enjoying the small moments.
Benefits of shed: Used it for fertiliser which was good, instead of bins. Plan to use it for storing lentils for this harvest and machinery at other times. It’s a great asset.
Rundle Farming Pty Ltd, Kulpara & Melrose SA
New to ‘cropping only’ farming family.
Properties ‘Pine Grove’ and ’Yarrabee’ Total area 2344 hectares
Family includes Grant & Clare, sons Mark & Paul & wives Anita & Steph plus 6 teenage children coming through.
Challenges: A dry start turned around with some May rains and solid falls through June & July. Crops came up well, and the year’s looking reasonable if the season continues kindly. With land around Kulpara hard to secure and the next generation keen to be involved, we looked seriously at the long-term future of the business - big opportunities, but also risks. Running both livestock and cropping has always had its juggling moments too.
Highlights: In 2024 we bought a new property at Melrose in a 20–25” rainfall district, giving us options for future growth. We can share machinery between farms but invested in a second tractor & sprayer to act quickly on fungicide spraying. We’ve also exited sheep for now and are focusing purely on cropping - a decision that’s brought real relief.
Lessons: Base big decisions on good information and always have an exit plan. Plans for 2026: Recover from a tough year, keep learning how to best manage two properties, enjoy life without livestock - and fit in more fishing and our traditional January caravan holiday!

15m x 30m x 6m Workshop with 9m wide verandah.
“Grant Sheds is easy to deal with, builders put the shed up, everything is approved and we just go on with a normal day.” Scott Fraser

Phil, Will & Cam Combe with their new 12m x 24m x 5.1m Combination Grain-Fertiliser-Machinery Shed
“Very professional. Shed was built in 4 days. Excellent workmanship.” Phil Combe

Mark Rundle with their 27m x 60m x 7.5m Curve-through MEGA Machinery & Workshop built in 2015. “It still works brilliantly for us. It’s an efficient layout with drive-through truck bays & pits for servicing, plus plenty of seasonal storage.”
“And if we need another shed, the first place we’d go is to Grant Sheds. It would be pretty hard not to go with you again.”
Mark Rundle

25% annual hay loss prompted the building of this 12m x 24.3m x 6m hay shed to retain hay quality. It’s one of two Grant sheds Rodney owns and he says, “I work on the philosophy that … “You See and Remember Quality Longer than Price.”

Rodney Sally & Jeremy Lush, Keith SA
Property ‘Hyfield’ Lucerne seed, hay & sheep
Challenges: A tough, dry season with the rolling 12 month rainfall at less than half average for a six month period made it hard to maintain livestock performance and source enough supplementary feed. It’s been a hard slog for everyone … farmers plus people & businesses in the community. Most frustrating of all - phone reception! We’re right on the Duke’s Highway near Keith, yet it’s deteriorated badly. Highlights: Despite the low rainfall, we’ve come through with livestock to sell and crops looking the best they’ve been in a while. Lucerne seed yields have been strong, and although we’re still in recovery mode, things are looking up. Plans for 2026: Everyone deserves a decent break after such an intense year. We’ll keep following best-practice management and doing things on time so we’re ready for whatever the season brings - just like baking a cake: Get the ingredients right, and hope it rises well!
Darren ‘Chook’ Letton, Paringa SA
‘Glenview Eggs’: Egg Producer & small cattle herd
16,000 caged & 16,000 free range hens, Producing average 1500 dozen eggs per day
Challenges: After the bird flu outbreak interstate, when 2 million hens were removed, and the rebuilding of those flocks, there is now a surge in production nationwide and now eggs are being dumped into SA. As a result, our regular customers are ordering less from us and prices are at less than the cost of production.
Highlights: I’m proud that we employ 10 local people. For a very brief period, egg prices were higher but like every industry you need to adjust to sell your product. It can be challenging but also rewarding. I generally have a strong and resilient mindset.
Plans for 2026: I’d still like to improve my business, including working towards satisfying the new regulations for ending cage egg production in 2032. It will mean more sheds and retrofitting of old ones. It’s a big cost and risk but that’s the “joys” of farming … No Risk, No Reward!

Ali & Danny’s Year in Review
Production business owners, Grant Sheds. Committed to family & community.

Darren’s 18m x 30m x 4.5m MEGA Machinery Shed with 6m bays.
Darren has 5 Grant Sheds (& the Letton family have more, dating back to the early days of Grant Sheds).

Challenges: When farmers do it tough, we feel it too. With widespread drought across such a large area, there weren’t any regions still buying sheds at full steam. Like our farming mates, we’ve planned ahead for times like this. We used the quieter spell for factory maintenance and tidying our grounds - including removing 180 tonnes of old Monash Playground equipment. It’s something we didn’t want to do while Ali’s dad, playground builder Grant Telfer, was still with us. Through it all, our loyal staff have been gold.
Highlights: We’re grateful that our “save for a rainy day” (or drought!) planning paid off. It wasn’t just talked about - it was done. We also enjoyed a couple of short, much needed road trip breaks. They remind us that getting right away from work, even briefly, does wonders for energy and perspective.
Plans for 2026: We’ll keep publishing Farm Gate News as part of our commitment to country communities, and continue supplying strong, well-designed sheds that farmers are proud to own - the kind that spark a bit of shed envy next door! Most of all, we’ll keep offering the genuine care, practical advice and service we’d want ourselves when making a big-ticket investment.
Observations: We LOVE working with farming people. Your strength, your resilience and how you make the best of hard situations is inspiring. We respect your agriculture and business skills and enjoy your friendly, down to earth nature. Plus, it’s a wonderful bonus that we make good friends with people who start as customers. Thank you for making our business such fun.
