The plot of Hewlett-Daniel Street in Granville contains twenty residential developments, nine of which are heritage listed, yet each dwelling holds a total
A shared lane way subdivides the plot in half, creating opportunities for new builds inspired by Granny flats. The existing housing stock is re imagined as “half houses”, two twin dwellings living in co-existence, and at the corner lots, multi-residential apartment dwellings. 01.
Material
Strategy:
The material strategy prioritizes sustainable reuse, viewing the city as an “urban mine” of recyclable resources. Urban mining is the idea of extracting valuable materials from waste, much of which would otherwise go to landfill or incineration
The Rockwood Cemetery, which is 5 kilometres away from our site, has many stone masons that work with high quality granite for memorial or ‘grave’ stone purposes. The off cuts of this granite are however, thrown away, and are an available source of high quality stone that can be used for structures.

Composite Brick Design:
The stone adds structure to the block while reducing the amount of concrete used by 60%.
