magaZINE. A photo diary to document the behind the scenes of the creation of twnty, the magazine which is fully comprised of Studio 204 at Kingsway.

TWNTY : Fashion Mar-Comms, is an original publication by Studio 204 at Kingsway, which has been curated as a way to visually communicate the creative study of fashion education.

For the first edition of twnty, Studio 204 are celebrating both the emerging and the established, with the magazine being fully comprised of the workings from both the past and the present students from the newly established Fashion Marketing and Communication course at The University of Chester, as well as offering a number of insightful conversations with professionals who are already working within in the fashion industry.

Throughout the pages of twnty, Alicia Jones has depicted the narrative of not only the Studio 204 brand, but also the individual students who represent the brand. She presents the community of the course, shows the possibilities of where fashion studies could lead you to, celebrates the visionary work from talented fledgling students and tells the untold story of a rising new brand.

To accompany twnty, Alicia has also produced a three-part collection of informative exhibition books, to document the entire process of creating the magazine and the brand from start to finish.

Behind the magaZINE, is volume three of the collection. This particular volume will focus on capturing the behind the scenes content from all of the work and the interviews which were used to finalise twnty. The intention of this book is to represent a visual diary to not only show how the magazine was bought together, but to also offer an insight into each individual’s final major project work and how their pieces were created.

The aim of volume three : Behind the magaZINE was to visually tell the story behind each page of the zine, by going behind the scenes and getting a closer look at each individual person and how their work has all come together over the last few months of leading up to completing their final major projects. It was to show outtake imagery from photoshoots which people had planned, as well as showing their styling journey’s and creative direction behind their projects.

Due to the unforeseen circumstances of Covid-19, photoshoots had to be cancelled or postponed and everything had to go ahead digitally instead. Because of this, I was unable to capture actual behind the scenes imagery of the final pieces of work which are in twnty, as they have all been done using online software. Unfortunately, this means that this book has had to adapt and take on a slight change within its content as well.

Even in light of all of this, I still wanted to continue with my proposal of creating a three-part collection of books; beyond the brand, as I believe each part is crucial in telling the narrative of twnty, Studio 204, and the students. Behind the magaZINE in particular is an important part of the journey, to see behind the final outcomes from each contributor and understand a bit more about them and their work.

Taking a positive approach to creating this book, I used my problem-solving skills and decides to include behind the scenes imagery which I have captures during their interviews that I held. I have also used imagery taken from their inspiration wall spaces in the studio, which I took during the initial stages of the final major project process and captures of their social media and online platforms too. Although it has not been executed exactly as it was first intended, I believe that Behind the magaZINE is able to showcase everyone’s visual narrative and what they been creating during the development of their final major projects.
