Central State hospital Location: Petersburg, Virginia Size: 471,000 SF EYP Design Team Members: Brent Castro, Cullen Sayegh, Sherri Shafiei, Alison Ledwith, Eric Petersen, Rick Clarke,George Hughes The new Central State Hospital for the Virginia Department of General Services is a 252-patient bed building facility designed to provide recovery-based treatment. The new facility encompasses an administration building, treatment facilities for both civil/forensic and maximum security patients, and six living unit pods housing patient living spaces which will replace the old hospital that was spread across multiple buildings on campus in need of updates.

Focusing around the hospital’s values of ‘H.O.P.E’ (Health and wellness, Openness and respect, Personal and organizational integrity, Empowerment and Recovery), the hospital provides a patient-focused design that seeks to destigmatize behavioral health and normalize the patient experience. The design features biophilic elements, thoughtful color theory, and views to nature, all with patient safety and care in mind.

university of maryland i.d.e.a factory Location: College Park, Maryland Size: 60,000 SF Design Team Members: Paul O’Connell, Toni Ayres, Charles Kirby, Clif Sullivan, Shayne Sobell, Kip Ellis The Innovation, Design and Engineer for America (IDEA) Factory is a state-of-theart building housing multiple unique lab types, including robotics, microscope, and rapid prototyping.

The design incorporates several collaboration space types to support the larger lab spaces to foster creativity and invention. Using the concept of Andy Warhol’s Studio in New York, the building features exposed concrete with contrasting pops of color and large inspired graphics. The different space types are identified using color blocking, shown in the exploded axon and key below.

Johns Hopkins MCP Location: Baltimore, Maryland Size: 18,000 SF Team Members: Brian Tucker, Toni Ayres, Mike Lee, Matthew Fickett, Laura Vargas

The Johns Hopkins Materials Characterization & Processing (MCP) consists of demolishing and renovating the existing Stieff Silver building. The suite is built on the ground floor, split between the original 1928 building (A) and the addition from the 1970’s (B). The 1928 building holds offices, computer labs and collaboration spaces to support the adjacent lab spaces. The 1970’s building contains mutliple specialty lab spaces and tools available to researchers from the university and extending across the country.

maineville school for the deaf Location: Maineville, Ohio Capstone Studio Fall 2017 - Spring 2018 8 Month Project Maineville School for the d/Deaf, a K-12 school, is designed to support the deaf community within the greater Cincinnati area. Developed on what was once the Peter’s Cartridge Factory site, the new school is perfectly positioned along the Little Miami River, allowing easy access to walking and biking trails, the I-71 highway, and adjacent to neighboring schools to provide a connection to the community.

The design is based on the concept of tiers: each successive level reveals a larger atrium space to create a centralized social hub. This design feature, in addition to natural lighting and softened artificial lighting, supports an ease of communication as sign language is first and foremost a visual language. Students and teachers can see facial expressions and communicate with each other via several large open spaces within the main building.

workplace studio commercial office Location: The Edge Building, Cincinnati, Ohio Senior Year Studio Fall 2017 6 Week Project The focus of the workplace studio was to research and study the culture, environment, branding and structure of a design firm. Based off that research, a layout for a 30-50 person satellite office is developed. The concept of ‘intersection” was utilized here: intersection among the firm’s multiple disciplines, materials used, connection points, public versus private spaces and how the design firm intersects with the community of Cincinnati.
