CHOSEN ROOM/ SPACE:

BED ROOM

SITE ANALYSIS:ILLUMINANCE

OUTDOOR SUNLIGHT: [464 lux]

DAYLIGHT BESIDE WINDOW= 278 / 464 x 100% = 59.91%

DAYLIGHT NEAR DOOR= 98 / 464 x 100% = 21.12%

DAYLIGHT ON THE BED= 183 / 464 x 100% = 39.44%

PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

1. PROBLEM: There is no light on the study desk, which makes it difficult to see clearly when doing work.

SOLUTION: Add a spotlight on top of the study desk.

2. PROBLEM: The pendant light beside the bed is on top of the ceiling. Due to the obstruction of the wall shelf below, the light is not strong enough when reading at night.

SOLUTION: Remove the pendant light on the ceiling, add LED downlight below the wall shelf, and also add on switches below so that the client and switch on the reading light anytime when reading.

3. PROBLEM: There is not enough socket on the study desk and bedside, as people now will have a lot of electrical devices, especially students and workers, they will need to charge their devices during working and also things such as speaker and lamp.

SOLUTION: Add more sockets at the bedside and the study desk.

4. PROBLEM: The air conditioner is not cool enough especially the large floorceiling window is beside the bed, which cause very hot when the sun shines in the morning.

SOLUTION: Replace it with more powerful air conditioner and add on blackout curtains (a special barrier to prevent any light from passing through.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Wall 1 is the hottest, where heat transfer can reach up to 2,287.22 BTU in the afternoon I believe this is because this wall is an exterior wall, and the other main factor is the window, as the R-value of a single-pane window is much lower compared to a solid wood door and 4-inch concrete masonry Also, Wall 1 faces east, which means it gets a lot of heat from the sun from morning to afternoon So in the next part of my report, I will design an installation that can reduce the heat gain in wall 1.

ASSIGNMENT 2B PASSIVE/ GREEN INSULATION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

PROBLEM STATEMENT

As stated in Assignment 2A, Wall 1 is an exterior wall with a single-pane window which gains the most heat transfer in the afternoon As Wall 1 is facing east, it gets very hot and sweaty in the morning till the afternoon when I am in my room even with the Air-conditioner switched on

DESIGN IDEA

Reduce the heat gain in wall 1 by designing a multi-purpose detachable product using heat insulation and recycled materials that can hang on the window shown above to reduce direct sunlight coming from the window shown above This product will also be able to be used as a key hanger, pinning pictures / reminders and a platform to put things like: pencil holder and stationery

(The window from Wall 1 identified in assignment 2A.)

MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS & SPECIFICATION

1. CORRUGATED BOARD (Cake Board)

It is made up of short, dense wood fibers that restrict the transfer of heat energy It has low thermal conductivity meaning they are able to keep things cool when hot outside and prevent the transfer of heat from one object to another. It will be used as the back of the prototype in order to provide strong and steady structure

2. FOAM BOARD

It is a good insulation that will keep the heat out and also control the flow of vapor It will be used as the front of the prototype for pinning the pictures.

3. WOODEN CHOPSTICK

A recycled material to remake as a wooden key hanger.

4. MOUNTING BOARD

A strong, stiff board consisting of a lightweight foam within outside layers of paper It will be made as a platform for the prototype.

MATERIAL AND TOOLS USED 1 HOT GLUE GUN 2 CUTTER 3 STRING 4. WALL HOOK 5 FOAM TAPE 6. MASKING TAPE 7 CUTTING MAT

STEPS MAKING THE PROTOTYPE

1. Cut the foam board into 100 square inch 2. Apply foam tape at the back of the foam board 3 Paste the foam board into the corrugated board 4 Cut four 4 cm wooden sticks

5

6

Cut four 1 cm wooden sticks Paste two length of wooden stick together using hot glue gun 7 Paste the wooden sticks on the top of the corrugated board using hot glue gun 8 Cut two mounting board with 25cm length 9 Paste two mounting board together using foam tape 10.Paste the mounting board at the bottom of the corrugated board as the platform 11 Cut the string in double layer to increase stability 12 Stick the string at the back of the corrugated board using masking tape

FINAL PRODUCT AND FUNCTIONS

-

Place key at the key hanger - Pin pictures and reminders on the foam board - Put things on the platform

MATERIALS COST

1. Cake Board = RM0 (Found in my mom’s kitchen)

2 Foam Board = RM0 (Leftover from previous projects)

3. Wooden stick = RM0 (Get from food delivery)

4. Mounting Board = RM0 (Leftover from previous projects)

9. Foam tape = Rm0 (Leftover from previous projects)

10 Masking tape = Rm0 (Leftover from previous projects)

TOTAL COST = RM0

MARKET RESEARCH

Total cost of the product material = RM0 00

Average market price = RM 511/29 (audience) = RM 17 62

Design value = Average market price - Total cost of product material = RM17 62 - RM0 00 = RM17.62

REFLECTION

In this assignment, I gained a lot of knowledge about heat transfer and the solution to control the heat entering into my space. Based on the above calculation, I would get a high profit. I think the main reason is that I found all the recycled materials I used in my house, and they are all free. I am glad that I can reuse the leftover project materials into something that is useful.

Btu/hr = 30 x 210 btu/hr = 6300 btu/hr

Estimate heat from electrical equipment:

6” Downlight = 78 units x 20W = 1560W

Tube Light = 25 units x 18W = 450W

Pendant light = 20W

Total = 2030W = 2030W x 3 41 = 6922.30 btu/hr

Total btu/hr = 74721.48 + 6300 + 6922.30 = 87943.78 btu/hr

Horsepower = 87943.78 / 9800 = 8 97HP

*Will need to install around 3 units in order to maintain the coolness.
