Welcome from Mayor Paterson

Hello everyone, and thank you for picking up another edition of Council Connects. This edition is a bumper one, highlighting some of the amazing events and programs Council has already facilitated in 2024 but also looking at what is still coming up.

The cool weather has now started to settle in after that incredible amount of rain we had in March. Wasn’t it wonderful to see the Todd River in full flow! With all that water around, I wanted to give a quick shout out to Council’s amazing Depot and Ranger teams who were quick to step up and assist with filling in major potholes and traffic control in trying conditions. Amazing work.

There is no doubt that the past couple of months in Alice Springs has been challenging,

and we’ve continued to face issues as a community. Your Council will continue to advocate for positive change in Alice Springs, but it also won’t stop us from connecting the community and brining you exciting projects and events in the short term.

There is so much to look forward to coming up, something I am particularly excited about is the Late Night event on 11 April. We’ve teamed with Parrtjima, the NT Government and local businesses in our CBD to liven up our town centre. There will be live music, discounts for locals on food and drinks and a free outdoor cinema. This is just one example of the incredible events coming up in our town.

For a full calendar of April’s programs and events, keep reading this edition of Council Connects. I’m sure I’ll see you at an event soon!

Easter washout!

We've had some wet weather leading up to the Easter Weekend! With non-stop rains, roads across the Todd were well and truly flooded. Alice Springs residents weren't deterred by the constant drizzle - families, dog walkers and revellers came out in droves to admire the mighty river and celebrate the precious flow of water.

Happy Easter from all of us at Alice Springs Town Council - we hope the Easter Bilby waded its way to your doorstep.

Big shout out to our Depot & Ranger Crews

With the wild weather rounding out the month of March, we've seen some potholes, damage to roads and general wear and tear. Luckily Council's Depot Crew are out rain or shine.

Alice Springs received more than 200mm of rain throughout March with locals flocking to the Todd River to see the first major flow of 2024. Unfortunately, the high rainfall in a short period of time also resulted in damage to roads throughout the community.

Council’s incredible Depot team were quick to jump into action, locating and filling in holes as soon as possible to make our roads safe. A big thank you to the hard work of the Crew, as well as the public for reporting issues as they popped up.

We also want to thank our Ranger Team, who were out in pouring rain along with Police to direct traffic and close causeways as necessary.

Our Depot and Ranger Crews are often our unsung heroes – doing so much behind the scene work for the Alice Springs community.

With 50 playgrounds, 68 parks, 400kms of verges, 120kms of stormwater drains, 221kms of roads and 220kms of footpaths, there is never a dull moment for the teams!

EVENT ROUND UP ASTC

WALL-TO-WALL FUN

It’s already been a jam packed start to the year at Alice Springs Town Council. We hit the ground running with the Summer School Holiday Programs straight into the first week of January, and it’s been a non-stop party since then. We’ve had the Lunar New Year Pop-Up Park, the FabALICE Night Market, Library workshops galore, Health & Wellness programs to keep Alice Springs moving, arts and crafts, music, tasty treats and so much more.

Our Community Development team is bringing the party in 2024, with the Night Markets an enduring long-time favourite and Pop-Up Parks fast becoming a classic - all thanks to you, Alice Springs, the life of the party.

We’re so happy to see Alice residents out and about making the most of all the wonderful things this town has to offer. This is such a vibrant town and such a fun community, even in the heat of the harsh desert summer. Now we’re heading into the cooler months, we’re starting to see the annual seasonal refresh as people flock back to the jewel of the desert – there’s no end in sight to the non-stop fun and the wall-to-wall events. LUNAR NEW YEAR L

A Roaring Start to the year of the dragon

On 23 February, Todd Mall came alive amongst a rich tapestry of festivities for the entire community in celebration of the 2024 Lunar New Year. The Pop-Up Park was proudly presented by Alice Springs Town Council in collaboration with SBS and Activate Alice.

As the sun set over Todd Mall, the Alice Springs Lion Dance Association took centre stage, ushering in the new year with their mesmerising performances. The vibrant colours, rhythmic beats, and intricate choreography captivated the audience, symbolising good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead. The local entertainers added their unique flair, ensuring that the crowd was thoroughly entertained throughout the evening.

One of the highlights of the evening was the delectable assortment of foods from all across Asia and beyond, with specialty dishes and authentic flavors that tantalised taste buds. From savory delights to sweet treats, the Pop-Up Park was a feast for the senses.

FabALICE Night Markets

Illuminate Alice Springs with Joy!

On Friday 8 March, the streets of Alice Springs burst into life with vibrant colors, captivating performances, and tasty dinner treats as we celebrated the first Night Market of the year in grand style as part of the fabALICE Festival!

Hosted by the dynamic duo, Constantina Bush & Donnie Piccolo, the Night Market proved to be a delightful treat for families and individuals alike. From the mesmerising performances by Drag Territory to the soulful tunes of the Alice Springs Town Band and The Huxleys, there was something for everyone to enjoy. DJ Krissy kept the energy high, while CoCO&Co added their unique flavour to the festivities.

The community spirit shone through the drizzle as residents braved the weather for another classic instalment of the ever-growing ASTC Night Markets. Free face painting brought smiles to the little ones' faces, roving entertainers spread joy, and an array of tasty food stalls and exciting market offerings delighted all who attended.

Arrernte Language & Cultural Workshops

Earlier this year, ASTC hosted conducted three Arrernte Culture and Language Workshops, free of charge and open to all members of the community.

The workshops were facilitated by Veronica Dobson, an esteemed leader in the Eastern Arrernte community, who has played a crucial role in establishing and preserving Arrernte as a written language. Also working as a highly respected translator and interpreter, Veronica has been actively engaged in educating individuals about Arrernte language and culture for many years. Assisting her was her daughter, Camille Dobson, who continues to contribute to the community by sharing her knowledge of Arrernte culture at her current place of employment, the Akeyulerre Healing Centre.

February 2024

It was a privilege to learn from these two knowledgeable experts, with a unanimously positive response from participants.

“Really worthwhile content and presenters were very knowledgeable,” said one participant after a workshop.

The overwhelming response to the workshops highlights the community's eagerness to engage with and learn from local Aboriginal culture and language. With hopeful attendees left on waiting lists, there's a clear demand for more events of this nature in Mparntwe – keep an eye out for future events!

CENTRALIAN AWARDS

A group of inspiring Centralians were recognised for their contributions to the Alice Springs community as part of Alice Springs Town Council’s Australia Day celebrations in January.

2024 Centralian Citizenship Awards recipients:

Centralian Citizen of the Year: Neil Ross

Centralian Senior Citizen of the Year: Roger Thompson

Centralian Young Citizen of the Year: Apajok Biar

Centralian Event of the Year: 2023 Bangtail Muster Parade

“Selecting the Centralian Award recipients is always a difficult task as we have so many inspiring community members that make Alice Springs a wonderful community,” Mayor Matt Paterson said.

“The 2024 winners are the epitome of that. They truly put the community before themselves and make Alice Springs a better place each and every day. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to all winners and say thank you for everything that they do.

“It’s also important to recognise and say thank you to everyone that was nominated across all categories.”

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!

Neil Ross

Centralian Citizen of the Year:

Neil Ross was named 2024 Citizen of the Year. Born and raised in Alice Springs, Neil has always had a strong sense of community service. He was part of the Centralian executive of the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry for over 10 years, serving three of those years as Chair. He was a member of the Charles Darwin Council from 2004-2010 and was on the University's Finance Risk and Review committee and then the Finance and Infrastructure Development Committee. Neil has also been an active member of the Rotary Club of Alice Springs since 1995, and both supporting and hosting the Rotary Youth Exchange Programs.

Bangtail Muster Parade

Centralian Event of the Year:

Virginia Loy was there to collect the award on behalf of the Rotary Club of Alice Springs for The Community Event of the Year: the 2023 Bangtail Muster. The first ever Bangtail Muster Parade was held in 1959 with Rotary taking it over as a project in 1961. The name comes from cattle mustering as after the cattle were mustered, cattlemen would cut off the hairy end of the cattle's tails so they could ascertain the number of cattle mustered. Now days schools, early childhood centres, sporting and community groups, businesses and tourism come together to create floats and celebrate the cohesiveness of our town.

Apajok Biar

Centralian Young Citizen of the Year:

The 2024 Young Citizen of the Year award went to Apajok Biar. Apajok was born in a refugee camp in Kenya and arrived in Australia with her family as a two-year-old toddler. She is a passionate advocate for gender equality, women, and girls’ empowerment as well as advancing refugee youth participation in decision making that affects them. She has been on the board of the Women’s Museum of Australia and Central Australia Women’s Legal Service, co-founded the International Women’s Day Equal Futures Fair and is currently on the Multicultural Community Services of Central Australia board, part of the Gender Audit team to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a co-representative of the Refugee Advisory Group to UNHCR on refugee resettlement, Australian Government Refugee Advisory Panel and the NT Government Multicultural Advisory Committee to the Multicultural Minister.

Roger Thompson

Centralian Senior Citizen of the Year:

Roger Thompson was awarded the 2024 Centralian Senior Citizen of the Year for dedicating countless hours to helping others learn English as a longterm volunteer as part of the Alice Springs Public Library’s Read, Write Chat program. The program helps largely new residents to improve their English language skills, and has proved an invaluable program.

Happy International Women's Day!

The Library Team celebrating International Women's Day by showing off some feminist favourites in the Library's collections.

In celebration of International Women's Day, the Library hosted two community events geared towards celebrating and empowering women and girls.

On March 13th, renowned author Anna Funder shared her insights and inspiration behind her latest work, "Wifedom," during an engaging livestream event, sparking meaningful conversations about women's often forgotten role in shaping culture, science and society.

The "Tech Girls" robotics workshops on March 12th and 14th provided hands-on learning opportunities for girls aged 8 and above, promoting STEM education and fostering creativity and teamwork.

Staff Picks From your Library

Stuck on what to read next? Our library staff have you covered! Here are some fresh, handpicked reccommendations from your Library! Follow Alice Springs Public Library on Facebook for regular staff reviews.

The Language of Food

“I really enjoyed this book, I am quite a fan of historical fiction and this book ticked a few boxes for me. The characters were quite lovable and it was fascinating to learn that Eliza Acton (the subject of the story) was the original domestic goddess and way ahead of her time, she was credited as the first person to include a recipe for brussels sprouts and was also the first person to separate the ingredients from the method. The author managed to bring to life the trials and tribulations of the time without it being depressing.”

What you are looking for is in the library

“My daughter has just moved to Japan for a year so I have been seeing books everywhere that originated in Japan. This one caught my eye as it also involves my favourite place, the library.

Set in Tokyo the librarian of a community library asks ‘What are you looking for?’ then recommends several books plus one that is completely unrelated, as an extra gift she hands them a felted mascot. The random book and mascot help the person to find what they are looking for within themselves. It’s a quirky feel good novel that leaves you satisfied and smiling.”

The Passage

“The Passage by Justin Cronin is one of my favourite books I have ever read so far. Beautifully written on an epic scale. I have read it 2 times and every time I discover something new and exciting within these characters. The writer really knows how to make us empathise with them. It sucks you in and makes you feel like you are on the journey with the characters. Can’t praise this book enough as it kept me on my toes with suspense. It literally takes you on a heartbreaking journey finding friendship, love and bittersweet loss. Keeps you from running for a bathroom break as you don’t want to miss anything. The next 2 books are part of a trilogy series The Twelve and The City of Mirrors- can’t wait to read them! It’s a quirky feel good novel that leaves you satisfied and smiling.”

Lovers’ Week

As we bid adieu to another enchanting Library Lovers Week, we can’t help but reminisce on the delightful moments and experiences shared within the cozy confines of our beloved library. From the excitement of discovering digital treasures to the serenity of live musical performances, each day brought its own unique flavor to our celebration.

Library Lovers Week commenced with an enlightening introduction to Borrowbox, our digital library haven, where all ages explored a vast array of digitised literary treasures. Laughter filled the air during the Music & Movement session, led by Nicole Crowe, delighting children aged 2-5 with

joyful melodies. The Leathercraft Workshop saw attendees craft personalised leather bookmarks, igniting creativity and camaraderie. Thursday's Book Chats ignited passionate literary discussions, spanning genres and fostering community connections. Wrapping up the week, the Live @ the Library event mesmerised attendees with a captivating cello ensemble performance, uniting hearts through the enchantment of music and literature.

As we reflect on the week’s festivities, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who joined us in celebrating the magic of libraries. Your enthusiasm and support inspire us to continue fostering a community where love for reading and learning knows no bounds.
