It’s time to get those Santa hats out of the There were bargains, gifts and Christmas treats cupboard and wrap yourself in tinsel as Christmas galore as Alice Springs polished off that lastdraws nearer! minute Christmas shopping. To celebrate, on Friday 8th December, Alice Springs greeted Christmas with its usual Big Ol’ Red Centre Welcome The biggest Night Market event of the year, the annual Alice Springs Town Council Christmas Carnival was a roaring success, and as usual was stacked with all the holiday favourites. Todd Mall, Todd Street, and the Council Lawns came alive with entertainment, festive cheer, and a whole host of activities.

The carnival featured three stages with live music and performances, including The Wanted Gems, the Beaut Ukes, and a host of choirs singing favourite Christmas Carols. Of course, the main event of the night saw the town Christmas Tree light up, thanks to the lucky young Centralian who won the raffle to flick the switch! Even Santa Claus himself made the trip to the Red Centre to join the fun.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the event – the Night Markets are only getting bigger and better, and ASTC is looking forward to a jam-packed 2024!

“The whole Council team bands together to put on a fantastic event. It really is a great night and there’s something for everyone. This time of year is all about celebrating what 2023 has been, and spending time with friends and family. What better way than coming down and enjoying the Christmas Carnival!”

A big shout out to all the businesses who participated in this year’s Elf On A Shelf decorating competition, there were some wonderful entries! Congratulations to A Home Like Alice for taking home first prize!

Local businesses came together to bring patrons a whole trail of bargains with the special Christmas Carnival Retail Trail, giving everyone the perfect opportunity to find Christmas gifts or to buy themselves a special holiday treat. After a night of enjoying the food trucks, stalls and the Retail Trail, patrons found themselves a good spot on the lawns to watch the fireworks.

Council Connects | December 2023 /January 2024

“The Christmas Carnival is one of our favourite events of the year, it really is a time to all come together and celebrate,” Mayor Matt Paterson said.

The final prizewinners for the competition were: First Place: A Home Like Alice Second Place: Ling’s Oriental Supermarket Third Place: Mixed Lollies Honourable Mention: APJ Concrete Competiton was tough this year with so many fantastic entries. The Elves have been up to all kinds of mischief all around town - keep an eye out on the ASTC Facebook page to see all the other entries in the lead-up to Christmas.

Christmas at RWMF

Merry Tipmas! We’re loving RWMF’s fantastic contribution to the business decorating competition.

Christmas is a season for celebration and cheer but it can also be an expensive time of year. A great way to save money and reduce waste is by shopping for pre-loved gifts at the Rediscovery Centre! There are plenty of unique treasures to uncover, which makes finding a gift an exciting and personal experience. Not to mention, an easy way to be a little greener this Christmas.

Wrapping your gift can also be environmentally friendly and cost effective! Wrap your gift using pre-loved scarves or go for the popular rustic look by wrapping your gifts in recycled paper. Add some finishing touches with aromatic decorations such as cinnamon sticks, eucalyptus leaves, rosemary and dried orange slices - tie together with recycled ribbons or string!

November Council Meeting wrap up Australia’s most prominent and talented artists. In collaboration with the Alice Springs Art Foundation and The Alice Prize, this community collection houses incredible pieces of work that deserve to be seen by everyone. At current, the Collection is not on display all year long and this means the public can’t access it at certain times. With that sentiment in mind, Council will undertake a review of our agreement with Araluen Art Centre for storage and exhibition of the Alice Springs Art Collection. This well help ensure we have the best arrangement for the entire community to discover and enjoy the collection for years to come.

Alice Springs Councillors met on Tuesday 28 November 2023 for their monthly Ordinary Council Meeting. The following is a summary of some of the matters discussed. To see full Council reports and minutes visit the ASTC website. A full video of the meeting is available on Council’s Vimeo channel. Gaining the upper hand on grass management

Planning for a fun and exciting summer holidays A wet 2022 and 2023 has led to an explosion of buffel grass throughout our town and the entire Central Australia region. This buffel, along with other grasses and weeds, has significantly increased the fuel load in Alice Springs and has resulted in our community being at a higher risk of fires.

Alice Springs Town Council is taking a proactive role this summer to ensure young people throughout our community are engaged through the holiday period. With funding assistance from the Northern Territory Government and the National Indigenous Australian Agency, we have put together a fulsome A key function of Council is maintaining grass at a safe school holiday program that will see activities on each and reasonable level. Emphasising the interests of the community Elected Members received several representations from concerned residents about crime, questioning whether the justice system is appropriately representing our community due to high rates of recidivism and the immediate releasing of juvenile offenders despite their lengthy history of criminal activity. Council are working collaboratively with the Northern Territory Government as a participant in the Summer in Central Australia Action Plan, welcoming the focus of Government agencies working collaboratively. It is difficult, however, to see how we can avoid a repeat of last summer under the current legislative framework that is providing offenders impunity to re-offend. There is also seemingly an apparent lack of success that diversion and ‘wrap-around’ programs are having given the same group of offenders show no signs of changing their criminal activity.
