2024 Masters Games

The countdown is on for the 2024 Alice Springs Masters Games with excitement building each and every day!

The ‘Games with Heart’ will return with a bang in 2024, bringing people from across Australia back to the Red Centre for a week-long festival of sport.

To support volunteers in running the event, NT Major Events Company (NTMEC) will host two workshops in August. These workshops will serve as a platform for volunteers to enhance their skills, understand event dynamics, and equip themselves to handle the unique challenges posed by such a large-scale event. They will also help build the capacity of local sports volunteers generally.

“We’re excited to be bringing the Alice Springs Masters Games back next year, and working closely with the local sports organisations is a vital part of this,” NTMEC CEO Suzana Bishop said.

“These development sessions will help us help the sports to build capacity and upskill in key areas such as marketing, event delivery, and attracting and retaining volunteers.

“The sessions are for anyone from local sports clubs and organisations to attend, and they will be able to learn from experts in the various areas. The workshops will offer practical information and advice, and provide a series of take-home tools and templates.”

The two workshops will be:

Hello everyone!

The weather is warming up and so too are things at Alice Springs Town Council! It’s been a busy period for Elected Members but we are beginning to make progress on some major projects that will help transform Alice Springs for the better.

Last month Council endorsed a concept design for the Regional Skate and Play Precinct at Newland Park. This project is a true game changer for our community, giving our town a top-class facility that improves liveability. This concept design will be out for community consultation soon, so we look forward to your input.

Of course while we have made inroads on projects, it’s also exciting to look forward. This month is Seniors Month, one of my favourite times of year. This gives us the opportunity to show our appreciation for the people that helped shape Alice Springs, something that is important not to forget. We kicked Seniors Month off with an incredible Mayoral Morning Tea and have some special things planned for the month ahead.

As always, I encourage the community to get in touch with your Elected members with any queries or concerns, you can find all of our contact information right here.

It is easy being green

Alice Springs Town Council offer a Green Living Subsidy to encourage our residents to think and act sustainably and to reduce household waste.

Did you know that a baby will use upwards of 4,000 disposable nappies before they are toilet trained? These all end up in landfill, which emits harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

To help cut down on waste going to landfill, we also offer a compost rebate program to Alice Springs residents.

Eligibility

To claim a rebate, you must:

» Provide a copy of your receipt

» Provide proof that you live in Alice Springs (e.g. a recent utility bill, rates notice or similar)

» Only apply for one rebate per household.

What can I claim?

Cloth Nappy Rebate

Items include: reusable nappies, reusable inserts, reusable swim nappies, reusable baby wipes, wet bags for reusable nappies, reusable nursing pads.

50% of your purchase price up to $100. For example, if a household chose to spend $50, they would get $25 back, if they spent $100, they would get $50 back, and if they spent $200 and over they would get $100.

Reusable sanitary items

Items include: reusable sanitary pads, leak proof underwear, reusable sanitary cups, wet bags for sanitary items.

50% of your purchase price up to $50.

Compost Tools Rebate

Items include: compost items, include bokashi bins, grains and liquid, compost bins and compost aerator, worm farms and worms, and kitchen caddy.

50% of your purchase price up to $100. Please note: only ONE compost rebate is available per household in total.

How to apply?

Applications must be made using the online form. Full Terms and Conditions can be found here

July Council meeting wrap up

Alice Springs Councillors met on Tuesday 25 July 2023 for their monthly Ordinary Council Meeting. The following is a summary of some of the matters discussed. To see the full Council reports and minutes check out the ASTC website. A full video of the meeting is available on Council’s Vimeo channel.

Share your vision for the future of our town

We are thrilled to announce that the Council has officially endorsed a Community Engagement Plan for the CBD Regeneration Project. This plan will be an essential tool in ensuring that every-one in the community has a say in the project’s development. It’s our promise to you that we will involve you in every step of this exciting journey. At this stage, there are absolutely no concrete proposals on the table. We are starting with a blank canvas and will be looking for input from community members. This is an opportunity to ensure that your thoughts and ideas shape the future of our town’s centre.

The Community Engagement Plan will be available on Council’s website in coming days and we’ll be providing updates as we move through each stage. This is only the beginning of an exciting journey. With your help, we’ll create a space that we can all be proud of. Stay tuned for future updates, as we’ll be looking for your input soon!

Supporting our unique events

We’re all for more events in Alice Springs, not less. That’s why Council has endorsed sponsor-ship of three of our community’s most beloved events for the year 2023. The Bush Bands pro-gram, the Henley on Todd Regatta, and the Run Larapinta Stage Race will all be receiving sup-port from the Council, ensuring that they continue to thrive and bring joy to our town.

These brilliant events all celebrate the unique landscape and culture of Central Australia and bring joy to people in our community. We are thrilled to be able to support them in 2023, and can’t wait to see the positive impact they will have on our community.

Newland Park moves ahead

Council has officially endorsed a concept design for the Regional Skate Park at Newland Park! This is a major milestone towards bringing this incredible project to fruition. The concept design has been carefully crafted by a team of experienced designers and is aimed at meeting the unique needs of our community. We are confident that it will

provide a safe, fun and engaging space for skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX riders of all ages and skill lev-els, as well as families.

But our work is not yet done! The concept design will soon be open to community consulta-tion, where we want to hear from you. This is your chance to give your feedback on what you love about the concept design, what you think can be improved, and what you think is missing.

Scoring goals for local sports

Sport is a part of the fabric of life in Central Australia, and we’re taking steps to better our sporting infrastructure. Through the approval of a tender, the outdoor netball courts at the Pat Gallagher Netball Stadium will be resurfaced to provide a safer and more enjoyable playing experience for all athletes.

But that’s not all – we’re also funding other priority projects through the Sports Facility Adviso-ry Committee. Up to $130,000 will be dedicated to re-asphalting our tennis courts, ensuring they are in top condition for players to enjoy.

Additionally, a lighting project for the Flynn Drive oval will also receive $130,000, improving visibility and enabling athletes to engage in evening games. $25,000 will be allocated to the Alice Springs Hockey Association for facility upgrades.

Taking community to Cabinet

With recent policy announcements by the Northern Territory Government in regards to liquor restrictions, Council wants to gain a better understanding of this decision-making process. We are committed to taking the voice of Centralians to the leaders of the Northern Territory so that is why Councillors are asking to meet with NT Government Cabinet.

We want to take a collaborative approach to the issues and challenges our community faces, and that can’t happen if the community isn’t at the table. Council will raise these concerns with Cabinet and aim to gain a better understanding of what programs they have in place to ensure a safe and happy summer in Alice Springs.

Alice Springs Town Council was proud to support Central Craft’s ArtShip2 Mural Project through the provision of a Community Benefit Grant.Hear the experience of two young artists on placement at Central Craft that participated inthis fantastic project…

During the June/July Holidays a colourful mural took place on the grounds of the Araluen Cultural Precinct. An activity of the Alice Springs Town Council’s Youth Program, the ArtShip Youth Mural was developed with over 100 young people participating. Three local young artists were mentored on the project by experienced mural artists, Alison Hittmann and Tammy Cornthwaite. The mural was developed with spray paints, stencils and pen, reflecting the outline of the Yeperenye Caterpillar Sculpture that is located nearby.

The mural was painted over the exterior of a shipping container as a part of the youth workshop hosted by Central Crafts. The purposebuilt shipping container is a lockable self-contained gallery/workshop space that was funded through a Community Benefits Grant.

Currently located at Central Craft, ArtShip2 can be transported for use in community events throughout Alice Springs (Mparntwe). The ArtShips have already been in use at the Partjima and Beanie Festivals.

ArtShip2 Takes Off Alice Springs Town Council Youth Mural Project

alicesprings.nt.gov.au 8950 0500 FB: @AliceSpringsTC 10 |

This project has presented a fantastic opportunity for youth engagement around Mparntwe, Alice Springs. The ArtShips’ workshops used a Community Cultural Development (CCD) process that involved artists working collaboratively with communities. The mural provided opportunities for young artists to express themselves and share their stories. They developed their artistic skills and cultural knowledge of the surrounding area. The three young artists had the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the project from the planning and design to the coordination and production.

“I was so happy to work with like-minded youth and mural artists that shared and encouraged me to express my style of art, and to make me come out of my shell as I was always a bit anxious to try new things”, Alyssa Mason said

“This was a great opportunity to unleash my artistic thoughts and create a healthy, safe place for ideas and inspiration to run wild. We had many great artists who hopped on board to help with the workshops which I am most grateful for. Tammy

“It was to cool to work with Alison Hittmann, Tammy Cornthwaite and Jeremiah Danials/ Peperill in a team. Alison taught me how to scale up images, Tammy taught me how to use spray paints and Jeremiah helped with local cultural advice”. - Alyssa Mason

Cornthwaite helped me with teaching me how to manage the spray-paint and how to use it as a medium. Jeremiah Danials -Pepperill was perfect coming into the project, sharing his thoughts and traditional knowledge onto the subject by bending his art into the work. Alison Hittmann was amazing coming in with fresh new ideas on how we can change the format, colour theory but also be open to trying different things to experiment and take advantage of mess ups. With also the support of planning by Lucy and Isla, Alyssa and I were able to plan for this great opportunity for the community. We wanted to give back to the community and I say it worked out pretty good”.

“Having grown up in Alice we know that youth need projects like this, that create an expressive outlet through paintings and drawings. Projects such as these encourage their artistic skills and grow their voice in the community. Art is its own language and creates some harmony. They need opportunities to build a positive mind set and show that they are not just running amok. We want the youth to be part of something that builds community, that is open to a wider audience, where they can put their own art into the public space and be recognised for it”, Aaliyah Anderson said

“Workshops like this bring a new light to the types of activities that young people participate in, in the Alice Springs, Mparntwe Art community. It helped young artists to find a like-minded, safe place they either didn’t know about or had little knowledge on. I believe artists will greatly benefit from having these kinds of workshop experiences, as it not only creates friendships, but also connections that can last forever”, Alyssa

In 2023 Central Craft has a focus on supporting young makers, and is committed to helping young artists who are focused on making craft and the arts their vocation. As part of this focus, they hosted two Under 25 NXT Gen artist/arts worker placements for six months.
