ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES: OXFAM PROJECT

Some Nature based garments I’ve taken inspiration from.

How do overconsumption and sustainability coincide?

For most of us when our clothes get damaged they usually end up in a pile at the back of our wardrobes, never to be worn again, or we replace them. The point of this Project is to mend the damage and upcycle the garments into something new - to reduce overconsumption and have a more sustainable approach to fashion.

DESIGN VARIATIONS

A drawing of my original jacket design with the ruffle samples applied to it

I applied my ruffle samples to a mannequin to get an idea of the type of garment I would like to create.

SYMBIOTICS PROJECT (A WORK IN PROGRESS):

The aim of this project was to create a body extension piece of paper. Here I collaged parts of my moodboard onto mannequins as a source of inspiration.

I am basing my design around ancient Chinese architecture. I am particularly fond of the beautiful roof curvature that seems to be prevalent in this kind of architecture, as you can see in the buildings above.

ANCIENT CHINESE ARCHITECTURE

When I came across Ancient Chinese Architecture I was really drawn to the curved and sharp roofing that seems to be prevalent all throughout these buildings. I knew I would take inspiration from that when it came to creating my design.

This red drawing here represents the color I would use if I were to manipulate this paper construction out of fabric.

To get an idea of what my design would look like on the body I pinned the paper onto a mannequin and created a bra. Where the shapes are extending outwards from the breast, and the back.

Here I applied my paper constructions to the body, to help me decide what kind of body extension

I would like to create.

OBJECT ORIENTED (A WORK IN PROGRESS): INSPIRATION

The Beyond the Streets exhibition, supported by adidas Originals, was the most comprehensive graffiti & street art exhibition to open in the UK. Curated by graffiti historian Roger Gastman, BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON incorporated the emergence of punk; the birth of hip-hop - marking its 5Oth anniversary in 2023; and street culture's strong influence in fashion and film.

I decided to base this project around Street art, hence the moodboard.

A reference to the ‘Never Agun’ print, spray painted onto the back of the trench coat in the middle.

I spent 6 years of my childhood living in America. Despite not experiencing gun violence first hand, I had to take part in routined active shooters drills where we hid from ‘the bad guy’. Ever since leaving the States I have become very passionate about gun control and regulation.

‘GUNS ‘R’ US’ is a reference to the toy shop -Toys ‘R’ Us, that originated in America. The name “GUNS ‘R’ US instead of Toys ‘R’ us emphasizes that the prevalence of gun violence against children has stripped them of their innocence. The colour scheme I have chosen also has a sense of innocence and ‘playfulness’ to it. This contrasts starkly with the topic at hand.

I knew as one of the processes for making my garment I wanted to create repeat patterns. Above is the print that I created. It symbolizes gun culture in America and the pathetic response to gun violence.I have taken inspiration from the three designs on the right.

‘Thoughts and prayers” written on the doormat of the shop emphasizes that when a mass shooting occurs politicians and those in power are quick to offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families. However, there is no urgency to bring long term change and legislation which is the response and justice these families deserve. The idea that people would be walking over this statement on the mat shows how victims and their families are not taken seriously and are dismissed.

Here I have digitally attached my print using Adobe Fresco (all drawings and notes were made using Adobe Fresco), to get an idea of what the coat will look like, I have turned the print into a repeat pattern and heat pressed it onto the garment.

My original trench coat illustration.

When I print my design on to my coat, I’m going to outline the name of the shop (Guns ‘R’ Us) in black (using heat press ink), so that it stands out more.

KNOTS

In this project I created a bikini cover up dress made out of macrame yarn.

A few months before I took my textiles exam I visited the Rebel exhibition at the Design Museum in London. I found inspiration in Sinead O'Dwyers spring 2023 collection. With this collection, her aim was to push inclusivity for disabled and other marginalized models to the forefront of her brand.

Macrame dress inspiration and design idea:

As you can see all the garments to the left are all in one colour of yarn. However, I decided I wanted to add pops of colour as well as beads into my garment to add depth and texture.

My rough draft of my design and different ways it can be worn

As you can see, I experimented with colour and beads to add dimension to the piece.
