EDITORIAL

Grandi eventi sport equestri 2022: Italia avanti tutta. È iniziata una stagione che certamente passerà alla storia. Tra fine settembre e metà ottobre il Bel Paese ospiterà i FEI World Championships di tre discipline: Concorso Completo e Attacchi ai Pratoni del Vivaro (Roma - Rocca di Papa) e Endurance a Isola della Scala (Verona). L’attenzione nel mondo degli addetti ai lavori è altissima e lo sforzo organizzativo ovviamente adeguato all’occasione.

La Federazione Equestre Internazionale ha preferito l’Italia e le candidature presentate dalla FISE tra quelle di paesi e sedi di grande tradizione con un riconoscimento importante di fiducia sulle capacità organizzative.

L’appuntamento dei Pratoni del Vivaro ha una valore particolare perché segna anche la rinascita di un impianto che, inaugurato nel ’60 in occasione dei Giochi Olimpici di Roma e noto nel mondo intero per la sua straordinaria bellezza paesaggistica e valenza di impianti, è stato per anni al centro di bagarre legate al passaggio di proprietà e, conseguentemente, andato purtroppo in progressivo deterioramento.

I lavori di bonifica dell’intera area per i FEI World Championships – 120 ettari nel comune di Rocca di Papa inseriti nel Parco dei Castelli Romani – lasceranno agli appassionati impianti di nuova generazione e ai tanti fruitori dell’area un contesto che ha finalmente riacquisito l’originario splendore.

Cavalieri e cavalli, oltre che per medaglie e risultati, sono ancora una volta in campo per la natura, il turismo, il sociale. Così come successo nel caso di Piazza di Siena a Roma che, da quando Roma Capitale ha concesso alla FISE in adozione l’area, ha beneficiato di importanti opere di restauro e manutenzione ordinaria che la differenziano da qualsiasi altro sito di Villa Borghese.

Italy leads the way with great equestrian events in 2022.

A season that will certainly go down in history has now begun.

Between the end of September and mid-October Italy will host the FEI World Championships for three disciplines: Eventing and Driving at the Pratoni del Vivaro (Rome - Rocca di Papa) and Endurance at Isola della Scala (Verona). Attention paid to these events is very high in the equestrian world and the organisational effort is obviously appropriate to the occasion.

Expressing an important acknowledgement in trusting its organisational capability, the International Equestrian Federation chose Italy’s candidatures presented by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation to those of nations and locations with great equestrian traditions.

The appointment at the Pratoni del Vivaro is one of particular importance as it also marks the rebirth of facilities that, inaugurated in 1960 for the Rome Olympic Games and known all over the world for its extraordinarily beautiful landscapes and the wonderful facilities, had for years been at the centre of legal battles linked to ownership deeds and sadly its consequent progressive deterioration.

Land reclamation work involving the entire area used for the FEI World Championships – 120 hectares in the Municipality of Rocca di Papa set in the Castelli Romani Park – will leave to equestrian supporters and users of the area brand new facilities as well as a location that has long last reacquired its original splendour.

Horses and riders, as well as medals and results, will once again play a leading role for nature, tourism and social issues. Just as happened in the case of Piazza di Siena in Rome, which ever since Roma Capitale entrusted it to the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, has benefitted from important restoration work throughout the area as well as ordinary maintenance that has made it stand out compared to all other locations in the Villa Borghese.

Dal 1987 è membro dell’International Alliance of Equestrian Journalist e delegata nazionale per l’Italia dal 2010. È sempre sta ta lega ta al mondo equestre; prima come amazzone poi come allevatrice. All’inizio degli anni ’90 ha fondato Equi-Equipe, una società che fornisce ser vizi editoriali legati ai più importanti eventi equestri. Dalla fine degli anni ’70 ha dato il suo contributo alle principali testa te sportive italiane: Corriere dello Sport, Gazzetta dello Sport e anche al quotidiano Il Messaggero.

Cavalli e natura da sempre nel cuore, Caterina affianca all’attività di giornalista quella di imprenditrice con la conduzione dell’azienda agricola biologica di famiglia, in Sabina, alle porte di Roma.

Based in Rome, Caterina Vagnozzi has been a freelance journalist specializing in equestrian sports since the 1970s. She has been a member of the International Alliance of Equestrian Journalists since 1987 and national delegate for Italy since 2010.She has always been tied to equestrian world, originally as a horsewoman, then a breeder. At the beginning of the 1900s she founded Equi-Equipe, a company providing editorial services connected to big equestrian events. Since the late 1970s she has been a constant contributor to the main Italian sport tabloids. Corriere dello Sport and Gazzetta dello Sport, and also to the broadsheet Il Messaggero.

With horses and nature in her heart, Caterina is not only a journalist but also an agricoltural entrepreneur running the family biological farm in the Sabine Hills near Rome.

Direttori artistici e designer dicono spesso che assumere George Kamper per uno shooting è come assumere diversi fotografi e una società di produzione con cui collaborare. Ha una vasta esperienza in produzioni e video su larga scala, oltre alla disciplina richiesta per girare i tavoli più intricati. Non c’è mai da chiedersi se abbiamo ottenuto lo scatto, più probabilmente, come scegliamo tra così tanti. Ha ottenuto numerosi premi per i suoi vari progetti di fotografia e video, inclusi otto premi Telly per i suoi spot pubblicitari e l’inclusione in numerosi libri prestigiosi e spettacoli di premi in tutto il mondo. Kamper è davvero un talento poliedrico. È a suo agio dietro la telecamera per girare foto insieme a una troupe cinematografica come nel dirigere uno spot televisivo complicato e sfaccettato o nel girare le proprie riprese.Quando non viaggia per il mondo trascorre il suo tempo tra New York e Miami. Art directors and designers often say that taking on George Kamper for a shoot is like hiring a number of photographers plus a production company to cooperate with. He has extensive experience in large-scale productions and videos, as well as the discipline required to shoot the most intricate subjects. There is never a question of whether one got the shot, more likely instead that of how would one choose from so many. He has won numerous awards for his various photography and video projects, including eight Telly awards for his commercials and his work is included in numerous prestigious books and award shows around the world. Kamper is truly a multifaceted talent. He is as comfortable behind the camera shooting with a film crew as he is directing a complicated and multi-faceted TV commercial or shooting his own footage. When not travelling the world he lives between New York and Miami. In his free time he likes scuba diving and sailing with his wife Sherryl and their children Nicholas and Alexandra.

Mario Viggiani è stato caposer vizio al Corriere dello Sport-Stadio, a Roma, dove ha la vora to dal novembre 1984 al febbraio 2019 occupandosi di ippica ed equitazione ma anche di tennis e boxe. È arrivato ai cavalli per la passione ippica di uno zio, titolare di scuderia di galoppo (la Lucana Gens). Prima di approdare al Corsport, dal settembre ’80 ha la vora to al trisettimanale ippico Ca vallo 2000, fino alla sua chiusura del novembre 1986. Ha collaborato anche alle prime trasmissioni televisive ippiche dell’epoca. Si è pure occupa to di aste, come banditore e reda ttore di cataloghi, e di pubblicità di settore, per stalloni e allevamenti. Attualmente la vora come freelance e collabora con Equi-Equipe.

Mario Viggiani has been a senior editor at Corriere dello Sport, in Rome where he worked from November 1984 to February 2019 in charge of horseracing and equestrian pages, as well as those of tennis and boxing. He got his passion for horses from his uncle, who owned a racing stable (Lucana Gens). Before Corriere dello Sport, he spent six years at Cavallo 2000, one of two tri-weekly Italian horseracing magazines. He was also a presence in the first racing programmes to be shown on television, as well as having a role as auctioneer and editor for sales catalogues and studs. Now he currently works as freelance and for Equi-Equipe.

THE HORSE THAT FLIES WITH BEN MAHER For Explosion W the 2021 edition of the Rolex Top 10, organised during the Geneva CHI in December, marked the completion of a circle in an unforgettable year.

The now 13-year-old Dutch world class outstanding chestnut’s win came four months after his Olympic victory in Tokyo where together with British rider Ben Maher he conquered the individual gold medal.

This partnership was formed in 2018, a season in which Explosion W had started to compete ridden by Emily Mason. Together with the British rider he had jumped a double clear round in the Wellington CSIO’s Nations Cup in Florida and it was precisely that feat that marked a turning point in his career with a continuous crescendo that after winning Olympic gold last summer led Ben Maher to make a seriously binding statement about the horse’s qualities saying, “He is not a normal horse… but I won’t ride another one like him...”

So far Ben Maher and Explosion W have together collected 21 wins (of which 8 in Grands Prix in the Global Champions Tour: Madrid, Rome, Doha 2018; London, Rome, New York, Prague 2019; Valkenswaard 2021), to which one must add the two medals won at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam (individual silver and team bronze).

The W after Explosion’s name stands for the initials of his Dutch breeder Willy Wijnen who every year produces no more than 5 or 6 foals in Berlicum, in Northern Brabant.

He is above all very fond of his historic broodmares with their well-tested bloodlines.

Explosion’s dam Untouchable boasts an excellent show jumping career of her own (ridden by Leon Thijssen she also jumped in 1.50-1.60 classes),and so Wijnen made sure she was never sold as she descends from a line of mares he has been breeding with for 40 years (“It is essential and in my opinion the dam’s ancestry counts for up to 80% in the success of a show jumper”). He has always liked the stallion Chacco Blue, ever since the horse was competing (“He had unique athleticism and suppleness”) and that explains the breeding that resulted in Explosion W. Wijnen respected his jewel immensely (“He was special for me from the moment he was born; he instantly made a particular impression on me”), allowing him to mature with great patience, initially ridden by Tristan Tucker and then in particular by Marielle de Veer, who allowed him to grow up with more daily training than at shows and concentrating more on his flat work than on jumping. There were many requests to buy Explosion W but it was only in 2016, that as a 7-year-old, his breeder sold him to Poden Farms owned by the Moffitt family, allowing him at that point to leave Holland for England and with plans to entrust him to a top rider.

With Maher the horse obtained increasingly important results and so in November 2019 he once again changed hands just after winning the Global Champions Tour Final in Prague. As specifically included as a condition for the horse’s sale established by Neil Moffit, Explosion W was to continue to be ridden by Ben Maher so as to continue to compete for Great Britain. The horse’s new owners Pamela Wright and Charlotte Rossetter were delighted to comply with this request.

“I have ridden many extremely good horses, but he grew wings for me – explains the 29-year-old Olympic champion - We understand each other and are in total syntony and that is what distinguishes him from all the other horses. It was very satisfying to still have him with me after he was sold as was the feeling of repaying the confidence of those who believe in us.”

The 2020 pause caused by the pandemic was useful for both of them.

Ben Maher took advantage of it to undergo back surgery he needed following an accident in 2013, while Explosion W took a break from competitions.

And then came an amazing 2021; an unforgettable chapter that did however end with the words “to be continued”.

Becoming a champion in any equestrian disciplines is more difficult than in other sports. Winning also requires your equestrian partner to be a champion and one certainly doesn’t find top horses hidden round every corner. Thirty-year-old Martin Fuchs, who has show-jumping in his blood, is now one of the legendary riders in the world of show jumping as he clearly proved last summer.

After the Olympic Games in Tokyo and on the eve of the European Championships in Herning, his fantastic horse Clooney 51 had a terrible accident while out in his paddock. The horse will probably be unable to return to the arena. Martin had a terrible time, but despite this managed not to lose his leading position. At the European Championships he won two medals riding Leone Jei and later the Grand Prix at the Rolex Grand Slam in Geneva won two years earlier with Clooney. He had previously also won a leg of the FEI World Cup in Lyons riding Chaplin.

“Clooney 51’s accident was obviously an enormous shock not only for me but also for my family and all those close to me. He is such a special horse. We feared for his life and instead he is slowly getting better. One cannot predict anything as far as his eventual return to show jumping is concerned, although we don’t know whether his improvement will allow him to compete again. It was a dramatic accident for all of us. This year I certainly learned that one doesn’t think about medals when things like that happen. There are other things that mean more to me compared to last year; we don’t only live for our results and business deals. Looking back to 2021, I have learned to take a step back and observe my personal life in addition to always wanting to be at the top. One must take care of oneself in the same way we look after our horses.”

Martin’s peace of mind is a family matter.

“I am very lucky to have them all very involved. My father is always the first person to get to the stables in the morning; he feeds the horses and puts them on the tapis roulant. In the winter we always ride in the indoor school. We usually start at 8 AM. My father and I always ride together and it is often he who takes care of the flat work before I start training the horses over jumps. My mother is more involved in the office work and managing the horses, making sure we have all our papers in order.

We also have many excellent people around us who have worked here for a long time. They exercise the horses, take care of grooming them and all that takes up a great deal of time and hard work. All the horses start the day on the tapis roulant before being ridden. After training they go out into their sand paddocks and then into the grass ones. Some horses, such as Chaplin for example who is a stallion, are at times ridden twice a day. So we need a lot of trusted and well-trained staff. I have an excellent team that allows me to just concentrate on training the horses. Their work is essential. When I go to shows and am away for various days I usually don’t hear from the staff at home. I know that everything is in good hands.”

Martin Fuchs is a regular at Italian shows and judging by the number of shows he rides in, one could say that he almost has a special relationship with Italy.

“I like Italian shows very much. I have a lot of old friends in Italy and it’s nice to see them. My stables are also very close to the border. I speak a little Italian and I like to do that very much when I am competing in Italy.

So as to compete at the highest level one must be a good rider and also have a good horse. The two, however, must also have a special bond and Martin has a winning recipe.

“Obviously my background and my family have helped me in this. It certainly isn’t easy to make it to the top but it becomes easier if you have seen things being done correctly ever since you were a child. I believe that my father does things extremely well and that he is one of the best in the show jumping world. When, you have grown up in this kind of environment, as I did, you learn how everything should be done correctly. This equips you with an excellent base for sport and horse management.

Since I learned all this as a boy, bonding with a horse mostly comes naturally and intuitively to me. If one doesn’t have that special bond at the beginning, it will come over time. My two favourite horses, Clooney 51 and Chaplin, have been with me respectively for eight and five years, and the more time went by the stronger our bond became. I obviously don’t have the same kind of understanding with other horses I have been riding for less time. I think it is important to be patient with one’s horse but also patient with oneself.

That is something I had to learn this year with Connor Jei. I had a few problems managing him at shows and so I had to adapt and change a few things. Paris Sellon helped me a great deal in recent weeks lending me one of the bits she uses. It helped me a lot. It is important to be open to new ideas and other people’s opinions as well as to learning from others.”

GENNARO LENDI Million Dollar Rider

Ormai per tutti è “Million Dollar Rider”. Na poletano, 38 anni, Gennaro Lendi nel 2021 è infatti diventato il quinto ca valiere europeo di sempre e il primo italiano a superare il milione di dollari guadagna ti da professionista nel reining, la specialità che è alla base di tutte le discipline della monta western.

Quella di Lendi è una famiglia di imprenditori senza alcuna tradizione equestre. Tutta via il padre di Gennaro prima della sua nascita acquistò un pon y che il figlio iniziò a cavalcare quando a veva appena 4 anni. Il piccolo Lendi al reining è arriva to presto, a 9 anni, dopo essersi entusiasma to da spetta tore in occasione di alcune gare seguite proprio insieme al papà. Da principio per Gennaro c’è sta ta tutta la trafila da dilettante,

Now known by all as the “Million Dollar Rider”, in 2021, 38-year-old Neapolitan born Gennaro Lendi became the fifth European rider and the first Italian one in the history of reining – the discipline on which all Western Riding is based – to have won more than a million dollars.

Lendi’s family is one of entrepreneurs with no equestrian traditions at all, however,

before he was born, his father Gennaro had bought a pony that his son started to ride when he was just four years old. By the time he was 9 -years old, Lendi started reining after enthusiastically watching a reining competition together with his father.

Like all amateurs Gennaro initially followed the same learning path which culminated with two titles won at the Italian Youth Championships and two more in the Futurity Non Pro Champions, while he continued to attend school and then also university (studying literature, music and the performing arts). Aged 22 he gave up his non Pro card and decided to become a professional reining rider, encouraged by everything he had learned from coaches such as Dario Carmignani, Todd Bergen, Andrea Fappani and Shawn Flarida.

“A reiner’s best talent? Symbiosis, which one only achieves after months of work, in order to obtain perfection in executing test. Those in which the horse seems to do everything on its own, or at least with just the slightest perception of the rider’s guidance in executing the pattern of movements, are the most rewarded. The sensitivity of the reiner and maximum symbiosis with his horse therefore make all the difference.”

Everything changed for Gennaro’s when he formed a strong partnership with Oliviero Toscani, who has always had a passion for horses and quarter horses in particular.

The great photographer’s Tuscan estate has become Lendi’s headquarters and together they have gradually created a stud farm that now has about fifty horses, with Gennaro responsible in particular for training them.

La simbiosi, che arriva solo con mesi di la voro, è fondamentale per raggiungere la pulizia perfetta nell’esecuzione delle prove, vengono premiate di più quelle nelle quali sembra che il cavallo faccia tutto da solo, o almeno con la minima percezione della guida del ca valiere nell’esecuzione delle manovre.

La sensibilità del reiner e la massima simbiosi con il suo ca vallo fanno quindi la differenza».

And in the meantime, his career as a reiner has definitely taken off. After winning team gold and individual bronze at the 2008 World Championships in Manerbio, he also won individual gold at the 2016 World Championships and individual gold and team bronze at the 2017 European Championships in Givrins, Switzerland. These and other important results have led him to become a “Million Dollar Rider”.

His title as World Champion dates back to 2016 and was won riding Yankee Gun, a horse that went on to be lent to the production company filming Sylvester Stallone’s fifth and last film playing Rambo and entitled “Last Blood”, and with Lendi as “horse master” for all filming involving horses.

“In addition to being formidable athletes – explains Gennaro – quarter horses are extremely cooperative. One can say that starting from scratch it takes at least a year and a half of training before a horse is ready to compete.”.

Furthermore, so as to share what reining means to him, hence passion and hard work, Gennaro has created “Horsense”, the first “app magazine” dedicated to this discipline and one that is spreading rapidly all over the world.

«Oltre che fantastici a tleti - spiega Gennaro - i quarter horse sono estremamente collaborativi. Diciamo che partendo da zero, prima che un ca vallo sia pronto per essere presentato in gara ser ve almeno un anno e mezzo di la voro».

E per condividere quello che è il reining per lui, cioé passione e la voro, Gennaro ha crea to “Horsense”, il primo “a pp ma gazine” su questa specialità, diffusosi ra pidamente in tutto il mondo.

HORSES, A PASSION SINCE CHILDHOOD. If you are born in Livorno, you come into the world with a passion for racing. The racecourse is still there in the Ardenza district and has been since 1894. Now over a hundred years old, the “Federico Caprilli” Racecourse was inactive for six years, between December 2015 and December 2021, but in the end it opened again and the entire city celebrated this event.

Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus football team’s manager, was born in Livorno in August 1967. He discovered horses and racing as a child with his construction worker grandfather taking him along to the Caprilli (“I was a happy child when I spent afternoons there”), and developed an even greater passion for racing when he grew up a little and went along with his father who patronised the racecourse with his friends from the Bar Ughi.

As a football player, at a certain point, Max travelled all over Italy and did so also as team manager. But he still always had a passion for racing and so the time came when together with a friend he also became the co-owner of a number of racehorses. Over the past two sabbatical years from football, Allegri was able to return to the world of racing, especially when he returned home to Livorno.

It was thus that in the spring of 2020 that he bought shares in a number of horses in France (trained by Andrea Marcialis), then in July 2021 he registered his colours also in France (reddish purple jacket paying homage to his city Livorno, with a white star on the cap as well as on the jacket) and now also in Italy (under the name Alma Racing, in which “Al” stands for Allegri and “Ma” for his partner Madonna, who comes from Pisa and whose first name is Andrea and is also president of the San Rossore Clinic).

His first win soon came and now Max owns shares of varying sizes in the ownership of four horses in France (Corto Muso, Lyricus, Mascagni and Momento Giusto) and

one in Italy (a 2-year-old filly by Sioux Nation still to be officially named).

While Momento Giusto is in training with Yann Barberot, the other four are trained by the brothers Alessandro and “Endo” Botti who have shared with us news about Allegri as the owner of racehorses.

“Well, to tell the truth I have yet to meet him personally... - revealed Alessandro, who has been training in Chantilly since 2009 – Last year we thought he might turn up at Longchamp for the Arc de Triomphe, but in the end he didn’t. But even at a distance, with him in Italy and me is France, he pays a lot of attention to stable life. I send him the more important training videos and update him as far as our plans are concerned and he usually answers with a few text messages. As far as everything else is concerned, he watches all the races live on streaming; I spoke to him on the phone when Lyricus won at Chantilly at the end of January and he was particularly pleased and above all impressed by the way he won. He has a passion for racing and is an expert. For example, when last year I suggested he should buy shares in Mascagni, a horse I had bought at the Arqana breeze-up, he asked for the horse’s bloodline and some videos and only approved after seeing them. I really hope that Lyricus will confirm his talent in good races; I would really like to bring him to Rome for the Premio Parioli on May 1st and perhaps give Allegri a win in a classic race.”

Livorno and Pisa are instead less than 30 km away from each other and so, when he returns to his hometown Max can also enjoy himself around horses. Three years ago, for example, he visited the historical Dormello Olgiata Stables in Bolgheri. Over last Christmas instead he had to change his plans to attend the races at San Rossore, well-aware that his presence at the racecourse would not have gone unnoticed and that therefore the afternoon would have been anything but relaxing.

However, the other Botti brother, “Endo”, has been able to meet Allegri and entertain him at the splendid and historical stables he manages together with Cristiana Brivio in the park near Pisa. “He has registered his colours in Italy too and they are the same as the ones he chose for France. I update him with videos and photos of this filly bought in England and who know whether we will be able to get him to the racecourse if his football commitments allow it when she makes her debut.”

LIGHT AND FLASHES LIKE IN A WESTERN MOVIE. “I crave the cowboys lifestyle. I think it’s the earnest character and heroic brawn of the people who work against the backdrop of vivid landscaper and fiery light.”

George Kamper, one of most admired signatures in the world of American advertising photography has always been powerfully attracted by the West and whenever he has had the opportunity of being near Moab for very different professional reasons not involving taking photographs of horses and cowboys, he finally created one of his most aspired projects between the banks of the Colorado River and the red rocks of the mountains surrounding it. It was something he had dreamt of doing for many years.

Moab is the icon of the western world, described by John Wayne, “The Duke”, as “the place where God created the West “ and George’s expectations were not at all disappointed.

Vivid landscapes and a fiery light. No photographer can remain unmoved by the two elements idealised in the setting of the Wild West, especially someone born and bred in New York.

“Growing up in Brooklyn, New York and working in the heart of New York City at the age of 14, left me with a comfort zone being around people, the streets of NY and the intense pace of life in the city. I began my career working for my Mom at Nathan’s Famous on 43rd and Broadway in New York City. Traveling into the city after school and on weekends by bus and subway and walking up and down 42nd street to get to the bus terminal (prior to 42nd St. being sanitized) was eye opening for a 14-year-old. I’ve always loved observing and there was no better place to watch

and document the world go by than New York City. I remember “borrowing” with my Dad’s Argus camera and returning it to its place before he’d get home.”

Enchanted by the West, for years George Kamper searched for a chance to create an opportunity to work in that environment.

“The West inspires me. I’ve lived in cities my entire life, so it’s a huge visual treat to be in such beautiful open territory. I suppose it’s a combination of the color palette, the light and the vast openness. I admire the life of cowboys and the connection they have with their horses. It’s kind of like the connection I have with my Harley on a road trip”.

“The Tanque Verde Ranch Personal Project came together when I found out that EQ Magazine, where I am the photography director, had been invited to come out to Arizona to attend a press junket for a couple of days along with several other editors. I reached out to our Editor and requested to go along for the ride and they accepted.

Since I now had a dual role of producing images for the magazine as well as for myself, I decided to shoot my personal work early in the mornings before the group gathered for their first scheduled event.

Fortunately we were able to shoot at a working Ranch in Moab and utilize the location and the cowboys on the ranch. My wife helped with holding a reflector and helping to keep an eye on the wardrobe etc.At the end of the day, it was just Sherryl and I and the cowboys, horses, etc...

The scenics were found by walking and driving around. We didn’t have a scout or anything do any pre-pro work for us. I really wanted these to be emotional and spontaneous and much more about the aesthetic then a normal well-planned shoot.

Once I was sitting in the studio and reviewing the shots with my retoucher we knew we had a terrific set of images that needed to have a polish and look that we had yet to create. We started playing around with the premise that they should have a flare and overall coloring similar to the look we would get from an old 16mm hand held movie camera. Once we applied the look to the first few images, we knew we had something special. I adore cowboys. I adore the West”.

When talking about racing in Italy, one cannot avoid thinking of Snaitech. Italy’s leader in the gaming and betting world, Snaitech owns and directly manages three of the country’s most important racecourses: Snai San Siro and Snai La Maura in Milano as well as the Snai Sesana Racecourse in Montecatini Terme. Together with Lorenzo Stoppini, Director of Snaitech’s Racecourse Business Unit, we analysed the present and future of these facilities.

INTERVIEW WITH LORENZO STOPPINI, DIRECTOR OF SNAITECH’s RACECOURSES’ BUSINESS UNIT In what way has the pandemic affected racecourses and what are your prospects for this year?

2020 and 2021 were extremely difficult years for the company managing the racecourses. First we had racing with no spectators and then all betting facilities were closed at racecourses for a long time, which basically annulled all revenue

Reopening to the public is of course good news, but it would be important to attract new racegoers.

That is exactly what we are working on. We would like to open racecourses to an increasingly broader and heterogenic public and to achieve that are adding new initiatives and events to the racing calendar. The objective is to make racecourses centres of attraction for citizens and families, a place to go to and spend a pleasant day. This is the plan we made and I must say that the initial results are extremely positive.

Are you referring to turnout for the Snai La Maura Racecourse in Milan?

Exactly. At the most important winter race meetings for trotters in Milan, we organised many events for children, families and more in general for the city’s citizens.

We added exhibitions of classic cars, ponies and animations to the show on the racecourse, with the objective of attracting a more numerous and heterogeneous public.

The reaction from the Milanese was extraordinary and thousands of people walked through the gates of La Maura resulting in a wonderful melting pot of sportspeople, youngsters and families.

Remaining in Milan where there is also the Snai San Siro Racecourse, what can you tell us about Milan’s flat racing season which has just begun?

Milan’s Snai San Siro Racecourse is unique in its genre and it is no coincidence that it is the only racecourse in the world to have been declared a monument of national interest. This year we will hold 63 meetings of the highest level, including above all the Oaks and the Milan GP in the spring season and then the Grand Criterium and Jockey Club Cup in the autumn. One change made this season is that we will be moving the Tesio Prize to November 13th, a change agreed on with Mipaaf to try and attract the best European horses after the season ends in the UK.

So the entertainment is not only on the racetrack…

Precisely. We have planned many important events, the first of which is opening the racecourse for the FAI (Italian Environmental Foundation, Editor’s note) Days in the spring on Saturday March 26th and Sunday March 27th. This is the third time we are joining this initiative and in the past there were thousands of people queueing to visit areas of the racecourse exceptionally opened for FAI guests.

Allow me to mention that the Milano Jumping Cup is planned for the second half of June. Held for the first time last year this event was such a great success that the FEI assigned the 2023 European Show Jumping Championships to Italy and they well be held at the Snai San Siro Racecorse.

Tell us about the Montecatini Racecourse where the season will begin in less than a month.

The season there will start on April 17th with daytime racing and really come to life in June when we start racing in the evenings too with races will held twice a week.

The most important event will as always be the Città di Montecatini Prize, which every year attracts about 15,000 spectators during the Bank Holiday Weekend.

They come to watch the sports and the fireworks at an event tourists and citizens never miss.

INTERVIEW WITH EPIQA’s CEO MARIACHIARA POLSELLI Horses and racing are at the centre of a new TV project that will engage supporters as well as new and transversal viewers with a format and content using language that is clear to everyone. This is a new challenge for EQUtv, the station owned by Mipaaf (Ministry for Food and Forestry Agricultural Policies) that since March has turned the spotlights on channel 151, as well as Sky’s channel 220. The channel will be managed by Epiqa, a Snaitech subsidiary that won the call for tenders for the next six years providing service involving the collecting of images, broadcasting and publicising the racing channel. All this will be directed by the new CEO Mariachiara Polselli.

Ms. Polselli, this is good news for the racing world and its supporters.

Can you tell us a little more about it?

Since 2005 Epiqa has provided the racing world with programmes with strictly ‘technical’ characteristics reserved to viewers who love horses and racing. Things will change this year thanks to Snaitech, a company that has chosen strategic partners and invested in technology and human resources so as to create a high-quality channel capable of bringing exciting programmes to its viewers.

Can you tell us about the investments made?

The first step was to upgrade and modernise radio links and broadcasting centres as well as embark on a total restyling of the TV studios in Rome, Porcari, in the province of Lucca, and in Milano. The quality of the EQUtv signal is very high compared to what it was before so as to seize every detail at the races and the beauty of horses in movement.

Horses as the lead players. Was this EQUtv’s idea?

Of course. The contents and formats are different but share a common denominator: horses. Our commitment will respect the Mipaaf’s requests and our programming will change radically thanks to cooperation with the new editor-in-chief Giovanni Bruno. We must imagine EQUtv as a container inside which there is a broad range of specific programmes that will involve trotting races, flat racing and equestrian sports.

A new challenge but also a great deal of responsibility regards to the viewers.

With digital terrestrial’s channel 151 and Sky’s channel 220 we have the task of satisfying the expectations of our viewers. It is essential that we should present ourselves using modern and easy language that is accessible to everyone, even those not familiar with equestrian sports. In addition to the main role played by racing we also plan programmes on other equestrian sports as well tourism and equine welfare. These are elements involving cultural wealth that will make EQUtv racing’s new frontier.

HISTORY IS RENEWED A historical location for two world championships. 2022 is the year of the FEI World Championships and Pratoni del Vivaro is preparing to host the Eventing and Driving in September. Both these equestrian championships have great traditions and on this occasion too, many spectators and supporters are expected to arrive from all over the world.

The facilities at the Pratoni are beautifully situated in the natural settings of the plain in the territory of the municipality of Rocca di Papa on the Albani Hills, therefore a few kilometres from Rome. Its sporting history starting with the 1960 Rome Olympic

Games when the cross-country phases of the Eventing Olympics were held there.

Since then many important events on the FEI international calendar organised by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation have been hosted there, among them in particular Rome’s 1998 World Equestrian Games with its five disciplines. The Pratoni del Vivaro very successfully hosted the Eventing and Driving Championships, while the Show Jumping and Dressage Champions were held in Rome’s Flaminio Stadium and the Vaulting Championships were instead hosted at Tenuta Santa Barbara, all with the same enthusiasm shown by spectators and satisfaction expressed by all those involved in their organisation.

EVENTING - SEPTEMBER 15-18 Eventing, the triathlon of equestrian sports, involves competing in three disciplines, dressage, cross country and show jumping, tackled in that order by horses and riders. These are three tests that require and demand very different characteristics and aptitudes such as elegance and harmony as well as serious technique in dressage; courage in facing the more difficult jumps as well as physical fitness in the cross country; precision and agility in the show jumping. All three disciplines are however linked by a common denominator: an understanding between horse and rider, a symbiosis not easy to achieve but indispensable so as to stand out or even to be competitive in this particular discipline... a three in one test.

This discipline’s championship history, in which Italy has been on the Olympic podium on seven occasions (among them Individual Gold for Mauro Checcoli at Tokyo in 1964 and for Euro Federico Roman in Moscow in 1980 and Individual Silver for Alessandro Argenton in Munich in 1972), started in 1966 in Burghley, in Great Britain, the acknowledged homeland of eventing.

DRIVING - SEPTEMBER 22-25 Driving is the only equestrian discipline in which horses are not ridden. It is a sport that initially became popular in Great Britain and then spread above all to Germany and to neighbouring countries such a Switzerland, Austria and Hungary. The first “derby” was help in Hamburg over two hundred years ago and more precisely in 1820. Pairs were soon added to four-in-hand carriage driving competitions with the first ones held in Aachen. Competitions currently also include singles and have three tests just like eventing with dressage (with compulsory figures in an arena measuring 40 metres by 100), the marathon (a real and proper cross country with

At the end of the 19th century, it was a German who became a serious attraction in this discipline. Germany’s Benno von Achenbach, who put an end to a promising career as an artist to devote himself to his beloved horses and in particular to perfecting carriage driving techniques so that they should tire animals less, especially those in the six-in-hand. He competed in the most important events all over Europe and it was he who won the first gold medal ever competed for in 1882 in Baden Baden in the “style and elegance class”, driving a carriage that had been owned by August von Bismarck.

At a sporting level, however, driving competitions were only acknowledged much later and only in 1969, thanks to the enthusiasm of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Consort to H.M Elisabeth II, at the time president of the FEI as well as an excellent carriage driver, and Germany’s Max Pape, who was von Achenbach true heir. The following year, in 1970, Switzerland hosted the first international competition reserved exclusively to driving, a discipline that since then has continued to develop at the highest possible levels such as the European and World Championships.

ENDURANCE - OCTOBER 22 In Italy the excitement of the Fei World Championships 2022 programme does not end with Eventing and Driving. Endurance World Championships too will be hosted in Italy. Attention on this discipline will move to Isola della Scala, very close to Verona, and the date to be saved is that of Saturday October 22nd.

Equestrian endurance has its roots in the resistance marches organised at the beginning of the last century in Europe, in which cavalry officers from the major European nations tested their best horses on tracks measuring hundreds of kilometres.

The first modern endurance tests were held starting in 1954 in California (United States of America), along the Western States Trail, a trail that followed the one used between 1860 and 1861 by the “pony-express”. These competitions soon also spread to Europe and in particular to France and Spain.

The first World Championship was held in Italy at the Pratoni del Vivaro in 1986 and won by the American rider Sandy Shuler. The FEI World Championship are held over a distance of 160 kilometres.

Endurance vuol dire libertà ed emozione.

While the Arabian Peninsula is home to endurance, Italy has become its annex in very possible way. In Italy, equestrian sports’ most demanding discipline, with competitions that can even take place over 160km in one day, has earned an important place in terms of the numbers and competence of participants as well as the quality of the organisation.

In the course of the last decade, Italy has hosted several World Championships: first for young horses, then for Young Riders and Juniors and finally for Seniors, as happened in 2021 in Pisa in the fabulous San Rossore Park.

In particular, it was Gianluca Laliscia who drove the entire Italian endurance movement and increasingly strengthened the bridge bringing the Middle East and Italy closer together.

World champion in 2005 and then the founder of the Italia Endurance Stables & Academy, he is extremely active as an organiser with his ‘Sistema Eventi’. This entrepreneur from Perugia has just completed a very important experience as the sports director of the 2022 Fursan Cup, a prestigious endurance event held in Al-Ula, Saudi Arabia, 300 km north of Medina, with prizemoney amounting to almost 4 million euros and 200 competitors representing over 30 countries. With a team of 35 associates Laliscia managed all the technical and sporting aspects of this event, now at its third edition.

Al-Ula was built on the Incense Route, the ancient path created by caravans that connects the tip of the Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean, and in its vicinity there is also Hegra, built more than two thousand years ago and the first Saudi location to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Al-Ula itself is an ancient walled-city, built in the 6th century in an oasis set in a valley in the desert.

The Fursan Cup was therefore held in a really unique setting, a place of great cultural importance, for the enhancement of which the Royal Commission has launched an ambitious project aimed at making it an important reference point in the development of local tourism.

SNOW POLO 2022 St. Moritz e Cortina d’Ampezzo

Reto Gaudenzi, può ritenersi molto soddisfa tto nel tirare il bilancio della edizione 2022. È lui il Deus ex Machina della Sno w Polo Cup St.Moritz ed è sempre lui che nel 1985 l’ha idea ta. Imprenditore alberghiero, innamora to di questo sport, è l’uomo che, nel lontano 1978, ha crea to il primo polo team con i colori rosso-crocia ti.

Una squadra che ha fa tto il suo debutto in ambito internazionale cinque anni più tardi, due anni prima che la Svizzera tenesse a ba ttesimo, a 1850 metri di altitudine, questa inedita e affascinante versione di gioco.

Ma c’è un altro Gaudenzi che quest’anno ha condiviso la scena della Sno w Polo con Reto: il figlio Tito. SNOW POLO CUP ST. MORITZ The 2022 edition of the St. Moritz Snow Polo Cup will be remembered not only as the 37th but also as the one establishing records. Free admission to matches resulted in 22,000 spectators of which 12,000 attending the final, after three days of top-level sport. The teams competing were six instead of the usual four and both the number of matches and that of the ponies competing (120) obviously increased.

In order to create the required infrastructures on the lake, 2,600 tons of material were transported there, and used to build the stands, offices, refreshment stands, welcome points and the VIP pavilion. The participation of patrons and players was of course very high profile with people flying in from all over Europe as well as from

A Cortina d’Ampezzo il polo on sno w ha una lunga tradizione (prima edizione nel 1989) e il torneo, concluso dopo tre splendide giorna te con qua ttro squadre in campo, ha richiama to tantissimi a ppassiona ti spetta tori che hanno sfida to il rigore del clima (-7/- 8 gradi) e goduto di uno spettacolo di sport di alto livello.

La squadra vincitrice, composta dal francese Clement Delfosse (hp 5) e dai tedeschi Pa trick Maleitzke (hp 5) e Daniel Deistler (hp 0), l’ha spunta ta per 14 a 11,5 su Goldspan, anda ta in campo con gli argentini Valentin Novillo Astrada (hp 6) e Pablo Guinazù (hp 3) e il lussemburghese Bert Poeckes (hp 0).

La partita è sta ta equilibra ta solo nel primo chukker, che Goldspan ha chiuso sul 3,5 a 2 grazie a una tripletta di Guinazù. Dal secondo in poi quasi non c’è sta ta più storia: Delfosse e Maleitzke sono sta ti prota gonisti di un vero e proprio sho w.

Un gol dopo l’altro hanno sca va to un solco incolmabile per gli a vversari: 9 a 4,5 alla fine del secondo chukker, e ancora 12 a 5,5 dopo il terzo.

Polo on snow has a long tradition in Cortina d’Ampezzo (first played there in 1989) and the tournament, which ended after three exciting days with four teams playing, attracted a large number of enthusiastic spectators who braved the harsh weather (-7/- 8 degrees) and enjoyed high-level sport.

The winning team, which fielded France’s Clement Delfosse (hp 5), Germany’s Patrick Maleitzke (hp 5) and Daniel Deistler (hp 0), won the day 14 to 11.5 against Goldspan, which instead fielded the Argentinean players Valentin Novillo Astrada (hp 6) and Pablo Guinazù (hp 3) as well as Luxemburg’s Bert Poeckes (hp 0).

The match was really only balanced during the first chukker, which Goldspan won 3.5 to 2 thanks to a hat-trick scored by Guinazù. After the second chukker it was practically all over. Delfosse and Maleitzke put on a real show, and goal after goal created an unbeatable gap with their opponents¸ 9 to 4.5 at the end of the second chukker and then 12 to 5.5 after the third.

The final chukker started with the most spectacular goal of the entire tournament; Maleitzke rode at least two-thirds of the arena keeping control of the ball to then hit it through the goal posts while an enthusiastic crowd cheered him on. In the final minutes of play the Goldspan team tried to reduce the distance but could do no better than finish on 14 to 11.5.

The final for third place was won by Team Battistoni, fielding Argentina’s Patricio Rattagan (hp 4), Germany’s Alexander Hauptmann (hp 2) and Italy’s Stefano Giansanti (hp 1), beating 8-6 the Hotel de la Poste, with players Felix Beguerie (hp 5), Therence Cusmano (hp 1) and Slovakia’s Martin Magal (hp 0). Battistoni’s top scorer was Rattagan with five goals out of the team’s 8.

IL BACKSTAGE DI UNA COLLEZIONE Nel mondo del fashion la presentazione delle collezioni è sempre un momento ma gico che cela dietro di sè storie importanti.

Imma gina te un a telier di moda e al suo interno il ta volo di la voro o il desk di chi, lasciando spazio alla crea tività, è chiama to a trasformare, con pochi segni, un foglio vergine in uno schizzo destina to a rimanere sempre un imprescindibile punto di partenza… Il pensiero corre subito a colori, forme, ma teriali, disegni, a ccostamenti, fantasia, detta gli…

Lo sa bene anche Vanessa Barea, imprenditrice con laurea in Interior Design e Executive Master in Fashion e Bu siness Administra tion, che in pochi anni il ritmo delle collezioni lo ha a ppreso in accelerazione e che con la sua crea tività è riuscita tra ghettare la staffa da accessorio tecnico per eccellenza nel corredo di chiunque monti a ca vallo, a elemento fashion.

«Nell’azienda di famiglia abbiamo crea to nel 2016 il brand Safe Riding che si occupa del benessere dei ca valli e della produzione di accessori personalizzabili e sicuri al 100% - spiega.

Inizialmente abbiamo focalizza to l’a ttenzione sulla tecnologia e la sicurezza con il brevetto di staffe che ammortizza vano i movimenti del ca valiere con un incredibile grip e in grado di a prirsi a 360 gradi in caso di caduta.

If anyone is well aware of this it is Vanessa Barea, an entrepreneur with a degree in Interior Design and an Executive Masters in Fashion and Business Administration, who in the course of just a few years learned all about the rhythm of collections and who with her creativity has managed to turn stirrups from the technical accessory par excellence for all riders into a fashion item.

“In the family business, we created the Safe Riding brand in 2016, which focuses on horse welfare and the production of customisable and 100% safe accessories,” she explains. Initially we focused on technology and safety patenting stirrups that cushioned the rider’s movements with an incredible grip and able to open 360 degrees in the event of a fall.

Production of our stirrups begins with a 3D modelling, and immediately afterwards with prototyping using printers. This is done in order to have a result as close to reality as possible. The next stage is the development of the mould for the production process with manual manufacturing or even with robots.”

Per la produzione delle nostre staffe partia mo con una modellizzazione 3D, e subito dopo con una prototipizzazione con le stampanti. Questo per a vere un risulta to il più vicino possibile alla realtà. La fase successiva è lo sviluppo dello stampo per il processo di produzione con la vorazione meccanica manuale o anche con i robot».

Contemporanea mente allo studio della sicurezza, Vanessa Barea ha concentra to l’a ttenzione sulla creazione di cover personalizza te.

«L’abbigliamento dei ca valieri - prosegue - ha cambia to passo e i canoni dell’eleganza in sella.

L’ imma gine della moda in sella lega ta alle stampe inglesi della caccia alla volpe, è da anni definitivamente tramonta ta. Con la creazione delle cover anche le staffe hanno comincia to ad essere parte dell’outfit del ca valiere: come tutto l’abbigliamento e gli accessori di selleria del ca vallo.

Ogni anno creo una nuova collezione. È un la voro di un team tutto al femminile che sin dall’inizio porto a vanti nel nostro labora torio insieme a Barbara Goldoni. Seguiamo le tendenze di moda sta gionali sia per i colori che per i ma teriali. A ppena verifica te le linee generali, ci confrontiamo con il nostro fornitore che è specializza to nella realizzazione di borse, scarpe e accessori di moda di alta gamma e che prepara i prototipi. Le nuove collezioni escono sempre ai primi di ma ggio. Tre cover con altrettante interpretazioni: una più glittera ta, una più classica ed una terza co n vernicia tura speciale. Sono combinazioni di tre design collega ti dal punto di vi sta croma tico, che a fine anno diventano acquistabili».

Ma ggio è alle p orte e come sempre si respira aria di grande a ttesa nel quartier generale di Safe Riding.

«I n questo prog etto che mi a ppassiona fortemente ci metto veramente l’anima. Dal 2018 disegno cover che sono tutte per me piccoli gioiellini. Il loro successo è sta to un premio inegua gliabile, sopra ttutto con le linee eve rgreen: Contemporar y, semplici e monocroma tiche, Premium, con g litter Swarovski, e Fla g con bandiere dipinte a mano, una ad una. Ho fiducia che anche le novità 2022 mi daranno soddisfazione».

Un team tutto al femminile sin dall’inizio porta avnti il nostro laboratorio.

“Clothes worn by riders – she continues – have changed as have the rules addressing elegance when in the saddle. Images of fashion in the saddle linked to English foxhunting prints went out of fashion permanently years ago. With the creation of covers, stirrups started to become part of a rider’s outfit, just like all other clothes and the horses’ tack.”

“I create a new collection every year. It consists of work done by a team formed only by women that from the very start I have been leading in our workshop together with Barbara Goldoni. We follow the season’s trends for colours and materials used.

As soon as the overall guidelines are established we discuss matters with our supplier who is specialised in creating fashionable high range handbags, shoes and accessories and prepares our prototypes. The new collections are always presented early in May. Three covers with as many interpretations: one is always “glitterier”, one more classic and a third with a special veneer. They are three designs that are linked from a chromatic point of view and at the end of the year can be bought”.

May is just around the corner and as always there is an atmosphere filled with expectations in Safe Riding’s headquarters.

“I put all my heart into the project, which is something I am really passionate about. Since 2018 I have been designing covers which I see all as small jewels.

Their success has been an unmatchable reward, especially for what concerns the evergreen lines: Contemporary, Premium, with its glittery Swarovskis and the Flag, with the flags hand painted on them one by one. I am confident that the new 2022 collection will fill me with just as much satisfaction”.
