WORKER HOUSING DA NANG, VIETNAM

It was our goal with this project to provide affordable, humane housing for Da Nang’s low-wage industry and service workers. The goal of our design is to provide these workers with a place where they can do more than simply survive, but thrive. Our design attempts to respect these workers’ basic human rights and cultural traditions, as well as the environment, on which we all depend.

For this project we worked in a group of 5 over the course of the entire semester. I was specifically responsible for developing the schematic design, concept sketches, and all of the construction documentation.

WAIPAHU RAIL STATION HONOLULU, HAWAI‛I

The goal of this project was to design the Waipahu rail station which would help move the area towards achieving the goals laid out in the current Waipahu TOD action plan. These goals include increasing pedestrian access, providing more flood resilience, and instilling the Waipahu area with a strong sense of place. The concept behind the design was to create a station which would double as a ramp that would slope up to meet the rail.

This project was done over the course of four weeks: one week for precedent studies, one week for site analysis, one week for framework development, and one week for schematic design.

A. PV panels located on the roof of the maiki building oriented south and angled 20 degrees up, creating a skylight and means of stack ventilation for the concourse and ticket areas.

B. Single package HVAC unit sized at L = 10’-10”, W = 7’-3”, H = 4”-11” C. Trellis system located along green roof for the mauka building providing shade for those who choose to access the rail concourse area via the roof gardens.

D. The wind primarily comes from the east / north east. Annual wind speed is around 2.5 m/s which is on the slightly lower side so spaces to be cooled using natural ventilation are elevated so to hopefully get better wind flow.

E. Trees are located along edges of walls that do not have much of an overhang shading them to help reduce solar heat gain.

F. Overhangs and light shelves run the length of the station building to help reduce direct solar heat gain while also bringing daylight into the building.

G. Triple pane, low-e glass is used in the 2nd floor for the spaces with HVAC in order to reduce solar heat gain through the envelope.

The goal of this project was to design a resting and exhibition facility for the Inter-city Park (Xingxi Park) in Kushan, China somewhere between the rail station and the shore of Lake Yangcheng. The facility will serve as a place where visitors to the park can rest, pick up a quick snack, and learn more about wetlands as they bike through the park.

For this project we worked in a group of 3 over the course of the entire semester. I was specifically responsible for concept sketched and all of the construction drawings. I also lead coordinated / lead the development of the schematic design and assisted another team member with the Revit model.

Due to the programs emphasis on resting and the cultural context of our site we decided to center our design around a courtyard. Two separate entrance and circulation paths are implemented within our design; separating the visitor and employee circulation paths. The exhibition space is located in a secondary building to the rest of the facility which allows the courtyard formed between the two buildings to serve as the primary circulation path for visitors, with the goal of providing a view over the water at the end of the courtyard.

Where the courtyard meets the water edge is designed in order to be flooded.

NAVIGATION BEACONS

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‛I AT MĀNOA

A series of nodes along Legacy Path serve as navigation beacons, helping people orient themselves in both the physical space of Mānoa Valley as well as the academic environment of the University through both digital and analogue methods. The information presented would include, but is not limited to, the various academic achievements made at the University and traditional Hawaiian orientation as well as draw attention to the winds of the valley by using the trade winds which blow through the region to generate noise through chimes located at the top of each beacon. This system is could be applied to other parts of the campus as well.

This project was done in conjunction with the UH Community Design Center's wayfinding project for the UH Mānoa campus. Our studio design portion of the project was to design a pavilion* which would address navigation and orientation issues uncovered during a previous 3 week long research phase.

Digital Navigation Beacon

Each node would act as a "digital beacon" through something like gps, wifi, bluetooth, qr codes, etc. The content of which would assist in the navigation of both the physical and academic environment of the UH system.

Concrete Slab Ground Plane

Navigational information could be inscribed on the ground surrounding each beacon, providing analogue information about the pe‘a sails each beacon is based on as well as general information to orient oneself on campus.

DEVELOPING AN EDUCATIONAL VIDEO GAME USING DESIGN RULES FROM ARCHITECTURAL PRECEDENTS

This project developed a prototype for an educational video game whose purpose is to help players develop tacit knowledge of architectural design using shape grammar. Players will be provided with a series of 3D spatial puzzles, each one based on a different architectural precedent. The puzzle pieces are 3D shapes formed through abstraction of an architectural precedent's design. These shapes act as placeholders for architectural elements, l.e.massings.

The Martin House by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier were used as a basis for the prototype developed for this project.

All game development was done using Unity with all supplemental coding being done in C#.

ORIGINAL ARRANGEMENT STEP-BY-STEP SOLUTION

Each player is provided with a set of labeled puzzle pieces. The player goes through a process of instantiation, manipulation, and connection to arrange each of the puzzle pieces to arrive at a solution. The game provides meaningful feedback on the formal and functional relationships between the pieces as the player is placing them through scoring. The player's actions are tracked as design rules, which the game compiles into a design schema.

The player can go back to any point in their subsequent design schema through a process of exploration.
