el 1967 dopo che Francis Chichester ebbe completato il giro del mondo in solitario, con partenza e ritorno a Plymouth (UK) e con un solo stop (Sidney, Australia) la comunità velica internazionale acquistò la consapevolezza che un solo record era rimasto da tentare: il giro del mondo non stop.

n 1967, Sir Francis Chichester completed a round the World solo navigation England to England, with a single stop in Sidney. After this feat was accomplished the international yachting Community knew that only one thing was “about all there’s left to do“: the round the World solo navigation without stops.

u così che, mentre già alcuni yachtmen si stavano preparando per tentare l’impresa, nel 1968 il Sunday Times mise in palio un premio per il primo che avesse completato il giro del mondo non stop. Partenza da un porto britannico tra il primo di giugno ed il 31 ottobre con ritorno allo stesso porto nel minor tempo possibile, passando per i tre grandi capi, Buona Speranza, Capo Leewin, Capo Horn, e senza mai toccare terra.

La sfida fu raccolta da nove concorrenti.

Due in particolare entrarono nel mito: Robin Knox Johnston, per essere stato l’unico a completare la circumnavigazione e vincere il premio; Bernard Moitessier, per essersi ritirato quando già stava risalendo l’Atlantico alla volta dell’Europa ed aver invece continuato verso Est fino all’isola polinesiana di Tahiti.

ew yachtsmen accepted the challenge and started to prepare themselves and their boats for the gruelling navigation. At the same time the British newspaper Sunday Times created a prize for the sailor who would have completed the circumnavigation first. The rules were simple: setting sail from a British harbour between the 1st of June and the 31st of October 1968, doubling Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leewin and Cape Horn on a Eastbound navigation and going back to the same port where the trip had started.

Nine contenders accepted the challenge under the Rules dictated by the new born Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Most of them retired at some point. One decided to keep sailing on a one and half round the World tour. Only one sailor came back and won the prize: Sir Robin Knox Johnston.

Il 30 giugno 2018, a 50 anni dalla prima regata, una flotta partirà per quella che sarà a tutti gli effetti la seconda edizione della Golden Globe.

In 2018 a fleet of boats of similar design will set sail from Plymouth (UK) for what can be considered the Second Edition of the Race: the 2018GGR.

La formula sarà la stessa: 30.000 miglia in solitaria, senza scalo, senza assistenza.

Gli skipper che accetteranno la sfida dovranno navigare con le stesse modalità che Knox Johnston e Moitessier affrontarono nel 1968: totale mancanza di elettronica, navigazione con il sestante, autopiloti a vento e non elettrici, comunicazione via radio SSB.

The rules will be similar: round the World through the big Capes, solo and unassisted.

The skippers will sail using the same technology as in 1968: no electronics, a windvane as a self steering system, navigation with the sextant and communication through HF Radio.

Profilo rancesco ha un’amore per le massime distanze percorribili a vela e un gusto assoluto, per la prestazione sulla lunga distanza. Negli ultimi cinque anni ha fatto della vela la sua professione. È Ocean Yachtmaster, massima certificazione rilasciata dalla RYA inglese. Conosce la navigazione in acque tidali e le basi del sestante.

Esperienze Salsedine Duemila miglia a bordo di un semicabinato di 6 metri senza autopilota, senza energia elettrica, in gran parte in solitaria. Da La Spezia a Siracusa, poi intorno alla Sicilia fino Trapani e da lì verso il Sud della Sardegna, Cagliari, Carloforte.

Momo Transatlantica da Ovest a Est (la più impegnativa) a bordo di Momo, un barca a chiglia lunga in acciaio del 1962.

Francesco esegue personalmente il ricondizionamento della barca con nuovi pezzi di meccanica, riparazione dell’albero, saldature in coperta e molto altro. La barca è arrivata a destinazione, nel Nord della Bretagna senza avarie.

Charter Cinque anni fra scuola vela, trasferimenti tra Inghilterra e Mediterraneo occidentale, una seconda transatlantica Ovest-Est e charter su barche fino a 20 metri di lunghezza.

Profile rancesco is an advanced sailor with a love for the longest sailing routes and a special taste for performances on the longest distances. In the last five years he has made his passion a profession.

He is Commercial RYA Ocean Master and got his papers in Plymouth (UK).

Francesco was in charge of a refit to make the boat seaworthy that took several weeks of shipyard in the Caribbean. The delivery to Brittany was completed successfully and without failures.

rogettata da Peter A.Ibold, architetto statunitense trapiantatosi in Francia, l’Endurance 35 fu concepita dopo la Golden Globe del 1968. Nelle intenzioni del progettista voleva essere la risposta ad una esigenza di barca di serie esplicitamente concepita per gareggiare in una eventuale seconda edizione della Golden Globe. È fra le barche con maggiori volumi fra quelle ammesse alla GGR del 2018 e i suoi punti forti sono una costruzione molto elementare ma solida e spazi sotto e sopra coperta perfettamente razionalizzati per le lunghe permanenze in alto mare.

he Endurance 35 was designed by the American Naval Architect Peter A.Ibold after the 1968 Golden Globe Race. He purposely designed the boat to compete on a Second edition of the Race.

She’s one of the boats with the biggest hull volume among the designs allowed for the 2018 GGR. Her strength are an elementary though solid construction and living spaces specifically designed for long periods of living offshore.
