THESIS ABSTRACT

The Thesis is searching for architectural solutions for the San Diego River.

The goal of the Thesis is to make the design sustainable, educational and a tourist attraction. The river is suffering from human waste and slow stream which results in serious problems. Not fixing the issue will lead to illness and flooding. The neglection and lack of interest are another problems of the river. The site is isolated from the world making it a challenging task to solve. The steps to solve the problem from an Architectural perspective are. Continually Clean the river Next building a design making the river more active and a destination for people to enjoy.

History Of San Diego River

Before the 1960s, Mission Valley looked very different. Today it may be hard to imagine the A valley dotted with farms along a meandering river.

The San Diego River Heritage Museum will tell the story of life in Mission Valley along the river from the The 1850s - 1950s. It will feature recorded audio and video of people who experienced This life firsthand, a life much different than today’s. The project is scheduled to open in 2018-2019.

The Heritage Museum will be a focal point in the incipient Cavity community, at 230.5-acre transit Oriented development which is a joint venture of locally predicated Sud bury Properties and the Grant Family, which has owned this property since 1920s.

Problem Statement

The problems with the San Diego River is the neglection from the city. There is no respect when building around the river, and the site became a place where garbage is piling. Also, The buildings are not facing the river making it less critical. Also, buildings are not connecting to the site which leads to space for homeless, garbage flooding and diseases.

Critical Statement Ihsan Ihsan is an Arabic term meaning “perfection” or “excellence” God mentioned in the Qur’an the word “Ihsan” in many verses, for example, (When you receive goodness, you should reward it with goodness) Ihsan.

Is to master the work done by the Muslim and make an effort to find it to the fullest, if the work is special to the people must be performed to the fullest as if the employer is an expert in this work and follow the worker accurately.

God has commanded us to be benevolent to all human creatures, animals and trees, some looking at their races, forms and colors. For it is not my right to judge creation.

When I arrived in the United States of America in April 2010, I found only wonderful and humane treatment.

When I started to think about the thesis, I wanted to return some of the favor to the United States of America and to everyone who lives there.

So I have chosen to develop the San Diego River and to rehabilitate it to benefit everyone

(When you receive goodness, you should reward it with goodness)

Thesis Statement The primary goal of the thesis is returning to the San Diego River Back to life as it was before, and Enhancing the life quality of all living creatures. The design is focusing on making the river iconic for the people of San Diego so they can find a place of education, entertainment and inspirational. Therefore cleaning the river is the aim of the project.

Before the beginning of the quarter, I met with Professor Dan multiple times disgusting projects for my thesis. Finally, I found the thesis project I'm looking for which is the San Diego River. During the quarter I started searching in-depth with the help of my the professor. The professor and I found there are two main problems in the San Diego River.

The first problem is the neglection of the site which causes a pile of garbage, and the slow stream of the river. The second problem is from an architectural perspective.

The buildings around the site are not respecting the river. During my search for a site to apply my thesis on. There were so many options to choose from. After the site analysis, my options were clear enough for me to choose one of the sites to have as a thesis. Also, the options available in front of me I have narrow it down to five main options. Learning about these case studies lead me to a suitable solution for the San Diego River.

Case Study Town and Country Resort Park The future park is part of a complete overhaul of the gated resort, which will also include housing, a parking garage and a makeover of the hotel. The park will be 4.33 acres along 7.71 acres of restored river habitat, much of it replaces current asphalt parking areas, and it will be situated on both sides of the pedestrian bridge that currently connects the Town and Country property to the Fashion Valley Transit Center and the mall.

Los Angeles River Park Proposal lines the area between Spring St and Cesar Chavez Ave with a walkway, along which terraced seating will overlook the river and areas of planting. Parts of the river will be widened to curve into the pathway, while stepping stones will provide a bridge across the water.

Up-cycle Park Upcycle Park is an urban oasis that is contextual, functional, and entertaining. The park will recycle parts from old airplane and create ecology for various native species. It will be a futurist park that reminds us of the history of Kai Take Airport.

Trenčín – City on the River Trenčín – City on the River is announced by the City of Trenčín as open anonymous international urban design ideas competition seeking the best comprehensive manicurist proposals for connecting the city center with both waterfronts of the River Váh. We expect bold and fresh proposals from teams composed of professionals from architecture, urban planning, landscape design and other related fields, which will form the basis for development of a new Central Zone Master plan for the city.

City Of The River Minneapolis has often been referred to as the City of Lakes, but the reality is Minneapolis is the City of the River. This has become evident with the recent development and redevelopment of the city’s core and the St. Anthony Falls area. With the redevelopment of the North side and Northeast side riverfront, the Mississippi will not only complete the vision of the Grand Rounds, but it will also create a new “central park” for the center of the city.

Case Study Summary After reviewing these case studies I found out that half of these projects worked and some didn’t work. For example the ones that did not work were the town and country resort park because instead of developing the river, they focused on the hotel and with developing of the hotel the river saw no action, another one that didn’t work was an upscale park river and this is because there was action around the river but no one had access to it. Some that worked were the Los Angeles river park and that is because the river had a connection to the building so the river was getting a lot of action. So after researching all these case studies I will focus on cleaning the river that way people can come, make the river a place where people can hang out, make it a place that is not just a river, but mostly I want this river to be natural meaning the paths to the circulation will be natural no heavy duty concrete.

2- On this sketch I played with water color to see what would happened if the river and the action of the activities will be if they were to blend. I also try to show how the dirty water would flow into the area that this thesis is focusing on.

In the last third quarter, The information collected from the last two quarters lead me to find a perfect concept for the design to make it compatible with both humans and nature. My concept that I chose for my thesis is the leaf.

There are reasons for choosing the leaf. The leaf is a sustainable natural machine that filters the air. The design Is giving three solutions to enhance the river. The first solution is creating a zigzag stream to increase the stream of the water. The second solution is adding Machine integrated with the river to filter the waste. The third solution is connecting the river with buildings so people can have access to the river. The outcome of these Solutions is to make the design a landmark, and encouraging people to keep the river clean.

AR502 In this quarter I have learned how to search in depth. After a careful and lengthy search, I finally found the real source of the problem. The problem is mainly broken into two categories. The first problem is the slow water stream, Which leads to an environment four diseases. The second from an architectural perspective. The buildings around the site are not facing the river which makes a disrespectful site. After the site analysis, the outcomes led to a design solution.

Water Cleaning and Filtering The water cleaning process and filtering will be operating by a machine. The machine is going to clean the water and by doing that their will be a cycle that separates the trash from the water, as the water is going the machine will pick of the trash filtering the water.

Tree Leaf The leaf concept comes from how leafs give us oxygen to breath it gives us fresh air, and the idea is because air is natural, and I want the river to be natural. And what I want to is make the river natural and I first want to do that by cleaning the river.
