FINDINGS AND OBSERVATIONS

FOCUSING ON TWO IMPORTANT ECOLOGICAL AREAS- THE MALIBU LAGOON AND MALIBU CREEK HAS MADE ME LOOK AT THE AREA IN TERMS OF HOW WE HAVE IMPACTED NATURE. TWO ISSUES POINTED OUT IN THE LAGOON AREA ARE ENCROACHMENT ON ENDANGERED BIRD NESTING AREAS, AS WELL AS SPECIES INTRODUCED BY US THAT THREATEN NATIVE SPECIES TO ADD ON TO THE NESTING AND MIGRATING GROUNDS, A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED STEELHEAD TROUT HAS A FRACTURED SPAWNING JOURNEY BECAUSE OF THE RINDGE DAM THAT SEPARATES THE ROUTE FROM THE LAGOON UP THROUGH MALIBU CREEK. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TOWARDS REMOVAL OF THE DAM, ENCROACHMENT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS WELL IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THESE CRITICAL LINKAGES.

TO TACKLE SOME OF THESE ISSUES, WE WANT TO RESTRICT HIGH LEVELS OF RUNOFF WHEN THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN HIGH VOLUMES THROUGH THE BAY .ANOTHER SOLUTION INVOLVES SALT GRASS, WHICH IS USED FREQUENTLY IN MARSHES FOR PHYTOREMEDIATION PROPERTIES.

BEING ACROSS FROM A SCHOOL, CHILDREN AS WELL AS ADULTS CAN GET ENGAGED AND DEVELOP PRIDE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD BY LEARNING ABOUT LOCAL FLORA AND HAVING A SPACE TO INSPIRE.
