It is true that God Almighty does not do anything in an unnatural manner. The fact of the matter is that God is the Creator of means. Whether we are informed of those means or not, there are always some means. The miracles of the splitting of the moon or (O fire, be thou cold and a means of safety) did not occur without appropriate means. In fact, they too were the result of certain unknown and hidden means and are supported by objective and impartial science. Those who are shortsighted and inclined to the dark hollows of philosophy cannot understand this fact. I am astonished that when it is an established fact that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, why then do foolish philosophers so boldly deny miracles on the basis of their deficient knowledge of the means that cause miracles. I do believe that if Allah the Exalted so wills, He can disclose these hidden means to His servants, but this is not necessary. When a person constructs a house for themselves, where they take into consideration the provision of all other amenities, the foremost thing that they ensure is the construction of a door to enter and exit the house. This Week in History 6 - 13 February A selection of brief incidents from the first and second era of Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya

7 February 1921: Hazrat Syed Sarwar Shahra announced the third nikah of Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra, which was settled with Hazrat Syeda Maryam Begumra, daughter of Hazrat Syed Abdus Sattar Shahra.

7 February 1941: Sheikh Mubarak Ahmad Sahib, a missionary in Africa, laid the foundation stone of a mosque in Tabora, Tanzania. Observing this progress of the Jamaat, some opponents tried to stop the process and attempts were even made on Sheikh Sahib’s life. Witnessing the hate, the authorities ordered the project to be closed.

7 February 1941: Hazrat Sheikh Abdur Rashid of Patiala passed away. He was a companion of the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him.

7 February 1952: A newly built Ahmadiyya Mosque in Ghana was inaugurated by Hazrat Maulana Nazir Ahmad Mubashar. The cost of the project was around £5,000.

7 February 1956: On the eve of the All India Congress Committee’s meeting, the Jamaat began to distribute around 150,000 booklets that introduced the Jamaat and its works.

8 February 1914: Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira announced that he had received glade tidings from God regarding the spread of the Jamaat’s message in Africa.

8 February 1938: Hazrat Sufi Muhammad Yusufra of Malerkotla passed away. He was a companion of the Promised Messiahas.

8 February 1955: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra invited people with different skills, such as doctors, businessmen and industrialists, to come forward and join hands with Sadr Anjuman in its diverse operations.

9 February 1921: Hazrat Maulana Abdur Rahim Nayyarra departed from England to go to Africa, where he established the Jamaat’s first mission in Africa.

9 February 1945: National College Lahore hosted an event highlighting the importance and the need of unity between Sikhs and Muslims. An Ahmadi speaker, Giani Wahid Hussain Sahib raised important points to be considered on the subject matter.

9 February 1951: The International Islamic conference held its annual meeting in Karachi, which was attended by a delegation of the Jamaat led by Hazrat Syed Zain-ul-Abidin Waliullah Shahra.

This conference continued until 13 February.

9 February 1957: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra set

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra during his tour of Hyderabad, Sindh out for his tour of Sindh, which continued until 5 March. Huzoorra boarded a train from Lahore station to reach his destination.

10 February 1925: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra initiated a special fund for the expansion of tabligh in Europe and invited Jamaat members to donate 100,000 rupees towards this cause. The Jamaat members deposited the required amount within three months.

10 February 1933: A missionary was ill-treated by some members of the Jamaat. Upon learning this, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra ordered that these members should not be spoken to, due to their conduct against the missionary.

10 February 1943: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra expressed his displeasure towards debates that were held for mere practice and training.

Instead, Huzoorra promoted the importance of academic and intellectual discussions that were not debates.

10 February 1945: Hazrat Nawab Muhammad Ali Khanra passed away. This companion of the Promised Messiah was also his eldest son-in-law who took Bai‘at on 19 November 1890.

10 February 1956: A barrister from the Baha’i faith said that as Islamic teachings and the Shariah were now redundant, the new constitution of Pakistan was made from Baha’i teachings that filled the gap of Islam’s inability to construct a constitution. Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra strongly condemned this false and baseless claim through logical and irrefutable arguments. Moreover, Huzoorra challenged

members of the Bah‘ai faith to show the teachings that were supposedly not present in the Holy Quran and were found in the Baha’i faith and the teachings of the Holy Quran that were not applicable in this age according to them.

10 February 1957: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra arrived at Hyderabad, Sindh. For his journey towards his next destination, Bashir Abad, Huzoorra boarded a motor car.

10 February 1958: Hazrat Chaudhry Sheikh Ahmad Darveshra passed away. He was a companion of the Promised Messiahas.

11 February 1955: A delegation representing Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya UK met the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and presented a copy of the English translation of the Holy Quran to him.

11 February 1956: The All India Congress Committee arranged its annual session in Amritsar.

The Jamaat attended the event, displaying and distributing its literature to many people.

11 February 1956: Students of Talim-ul-Islam College were given an opportunity to have audience with the successful journalist, writer and poet; Abdul Majeed Salik.

11 February 1957: Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra arrived at Mirpur Khas during his tour of Sindh, Pakistan.

On 1 February, a group of 23 men from Niedersachsen, Germany had a mulaqat with Hazrat Amirul Momineen, may Allah be his Helper, where they had the chance to ask a number of questions on numerous and diverse matters.

The first question was asked by a young boy who asked what the purpose and wisdom was behind delivering the current series of Friday Sermons on the Badri Companionsra. Answering the young boy, Huzooraa said, “Firstly, the purpose of this is so that the history of the Companionsra, especially the Badri Companionsra, can be compiled.” Secondly, Huzooraa added, “The Holy Prophetsa said, ‘My companions are like stars; whichever of them you use as a guide, you will be rightly guided.’ Thus, they are great examples and a source of guidance

Analysts, economists and academics are now profusely writing and commenting on the future of Britain. BBC Radio 4 draws experts into their studios every day, who analyse the latest developments with Brexit, while articles across newspapers and journals are following suit. “The hard work and tough decisions are yet to come”, according to a recent report published by the think-tank, The UK in a Changing Europe.

Britain has now initiated the 11-month transition period during which it will continue to abide by EU rules. The aim is to strike a trade deal for future trade with the EU, and it aspires a Canada like deal. But this needs to be settled quickly as “time is short” according to Peter Barnes, Senior elections and political analyst at BBC News. After all,

Concerning the recent outbreak of the coronavirus in China, one nasir asked if there is any reference of such a virus in the revelations of the Promised Messiahas, such as the plague. Answering the question, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said that there is no mention of the coronavirus in the revelations of the Promised Messiahas, however, Huzoor said, “We do find mention of other calamities, such as the World War,

tsunamis and earthquakes, yet people do not turn towards God.” Thus, Huzooraa further said that such calamities occur so that man can turn his attention towards God. Further adding to this, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa said, “We cannot compare the coronavirus to the epidemic plague that was spread across India where millions of people died.”

A question was asked regarding the manner in which one can serve their parents if they live far away or in another country, whether it be for work or other reasons.

Responding to the question, Huzooraa said, “One can help them financially, or when you have the opportunity or days off, one can visit their parents, fulfil their needs and show them respect.”

Succeeding this, one khadim asked Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa how we should answer those who say that Islam is a very

unattractive religion. Answering the young khadim, Huzooraa said, “Islam never claimed that it would follow the trend. Prophets are sent to the world so that they can guide people, not so that they follow people.”

Huzooraa further added: “When the Holy Prophetsa came with the message of Islam, the people of Mecca were frustrated and, consequently, [Muslims] had to migrate. Likewise, Prophet Mosesas faced many adversities and trials, which forced him to flee from the Pharaoh. Again, Prophet Jesusas also faced opposition and, according to our belief, migrated to Kashmir. Thus, in actuality, only those who have forgotten God and are attracted to this materialistic world say that religion is unattractive.”

However, “The more space Britain puts between its rules and Europe’s, the bloc’s leaders have said, the more they will hamper Britain’s access to the European market. Any restrictions of that sort would threaten British jobs, reliant as many of them are on European customers” said Mr Mueller. (What is Brexit? And what happens next?; nytimes.com, 31 January 2020) Another voice, Sebastian Payne, a political journalist and the Whitehall correspondent for the Financial Times, has taken a more optimistic view saying that “the mandates of both sides show a steep path towards a deal: a basic one perhaps, but something that can be brokered this year. The initial cries that all is hopeless and we’re heading straight towards no-deal at

the end of 2020 may be premature.” (Calm down, Brexit trade deal can be done; ft.com, 5 February 2020) Writing in the “UK in a Changing Europe” report – a King’s College London based think-tank – the director, Anand Menon said that it was “hard to see anything more than the barest of bones deal being agreed by the end of the year”. The report’s authors also noted, “In the meantime, UK businesses that rely on trade with Europe will struggle…” (Brexit has only just begun, says think-tank; aljazeera.com, 4 February 2020) As Ahmadi Muslims, we can only pray and hope for the best, for the United Kingdom – a nation that has been a leading example of tolerance, inter-religious freedom and harmony – and for the rest of the world, that this all leads to something positive.

The world examined Saving giants, Gandhi’s killer and 1g of alcohol

This series scans the latest research and developments in the realms of science, academia, technology and geopolitics, providing a glance at the ever changing world

GEOPOLITICS

Gandhi’s killer celebrated The extreme right of the political spectrum has seen support within Europe and America over recent years.

Analysis shows how populist movements are also gaining support in the Eastern hemisphere of the world.

A recent New York Times article entitled “Ghandi’s Killer Evokes Admiration as Never Before” discussed how Nathuram Vinayak Godse, the Hindu extremist who murdered Gandhi, is being celebrated by nationalists across India. The article noted how “across the country, more than a dozen statues of Gandhi’s killer have been erected. Several Hindu temples are being converted into Godse temples.” The issue of nationalism in India has been a great concern for both Indians and outsiders alike.

Gandhi, who is more commonly known as a non-violent figure of resistance, has been championed and revered within India and abroad, however, “the rise of a Hindu nationalist government … has uncorked many extremist beliefs, and admiration for Gandhi’s killer...” wrote Sameer Yasir of the New York Times.

“Indians consider Gandhi as one of the fathers of their nation.” But this is changing with the rise of nationalist ideology. According to the piece, Ramchandra Guha, a biographer of Gandhi, said that “fans of Gandhi’s killer were no longer a fringe group. Instead, he said, God’s admiration has found a place among what he considers a worryingly large segment of the population. It is foul, despicable, but it is real and widespread…” (nytimes.com, 4 February 2020) Whether in the West or the East, the rise of the alt-Right and populist movements uncovers the sad reality of our world systems; governments are distrusted, the economy is failing, justice is absent and tolerance has disappeared.

HEALTH

Every gram of alcohol leads to brain ageing New research published

by Scientific Reports panned out how even the smallest amounts of alcohol has detrimental effects on the brain. The study took place in the UK and included 11,651 participants. The study found that “those who consumed alcohol every day or on most days of

the week had around 0.4 years or 5 months of additional brain ageing compared to those who did not. This meant that drinking regularly led to an accelerated brain ageing”, explained the researchers. The study concluded that for every gram of alcohol consumed per day, the brain aged (approximately) a week! The researchers explained that (the rather obvious) way to stop this would be to shun alcohol altogether, something that Islam has preached since its birth. (news-medical.net, 2 February 2020)

PLANTS AND ANIMALS

The importance of “giants” Research carried out by the University of Arizona has found that the loss of larger plants and animals (already at risk of extinction) would damage life on earth. Nature Communications published the study on 5 February 2020 and through computer stimulations “compared the state of the natural world during the Pleistocene (a past epoch long before human-caused extinctions began), the present day and a future world, in which all large plants and animals go extinct. The results revealed that “continued loss of large animals alone would lead to a 44% reduction in the total amount of wild animal biomass on the planet.” Further, a 92% loss in soil fertility would follow suit; undermining the earth’s ability to “grow plants and sustain life”. Brian Enquist, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona noted how “protecting big, charismatic species does have an umbrella effect to protect the wider ecosystem.” The reason for this is because large entities transport huge amounts of nutrients, “When large animals eat in one location and defecate or urinate in another, they transport nutrients, often moving them from nutrient-rich areas to other, less fertile parts of the land and oceans. Similarly, the largest trees are the most productive, and contain and stir more nutrients and carbon.” (phys.org, 5 February 2020)

GOOD TO KNOW

“Spin” found in scientific journals Much of the news today is orientated towards “clickbait” and diverting our attention towards a particular “positive” or “interesting” element of a story, while ignoring the realities that surround them, this is called spin. A study investigated “spin” found in research papers, the results “found spin in more than half of the abstracts they analysed.”

The authors published their findings in BMJ Evidence Based Medicine and defined “spin” as: “[T]he use of specific reporting strategies, from whatever motive, to highlight that the experimental treatment is beneficial, despite a statistically nonsignificant difference for the primary outcome, or to distract the reader from statistically nonsignificant results.”

Looking at the top six psychiatry and psychology journals from 2012-17 and the abstracts of 116 papers, they found that “…of these, 56% showed evidence of spin. This included spin in 2% of titles, 21% of the results sections of the abstract, and 49% in the conclusion sections of the abstract. In 15% of the papers, spin was present in both the results and conclusion sections of the abstracts.” Surprisingly, the researchers found no positive correlations towards the funding of industry towards research and spin (medicalnewstoday. com, 10 August 2019).The ethical concern of using spin in research papers hovers around doctors reading and relying on these papers and using them for their medical practices.

If scientists are not straightforward and black-and-white when publishing their findings, negative consequences may follow.

TECH

World streaming up 58%

2019 saw a huge surge in video streaming across the world, an increase by more than a half (58%) according to the firm Conviva. In the US and Europe, streaming time saw the greatest growth, the US was up 61% and Europe saw an increase of 65%. The study found that two-thirds of video streaming happens on television (across America), 21% on phones and 7% on computers. “On-demand content remained the preference of streamers, accounting for 66% of global viewing time, up from 59% a year ago”, the report detailed. Low-fat diets and the bumblebee Bees provide foundation of diversity on earth; without them, plants cannot reproduce.

There are more than 20,000 species of bees across the world, the bumblebee being one of them. New research into what bumblebees prefer in their diet shows a dislike for fat. “Small amounts of fatty acids were added to pollen to increase its fat content. The researchers found that bumblebees could clearly differentiate between normal pollen and pollen with increased fat content and did show a clear preference for normal pollen.” Professor Sara Leonhardt, a specialist in plant-insect interaction, concluded, “The more fat the pollen contained, the less the bumblebees consumed that pollen,” Bumblebees actually preferred death over having to eat the high-fat pollen. Ahmadi opponent apologises for his actions Indonesia.

What happened in 2005 Since the incident of 2005, Jamaat-eAhmadiyya Indonesia still cannot hold Jalsa Salanas on a national level.

Ustadz Saifuddin, who was the leader of the “Islamic Front Defender”, chief of the Ulema council in Pondok Udik in 2005 and one of the instigators who led the attack in 2005, also attended this Jalsa. However, now, after 15 years, on 18 January 2020, he returned to the Jamaat centre, not to cause hurt, but to show deep regret and apologise before the Ahmadi audience.

“I am happy to meet you all, but also sad to remember the time when I incited people to attack this markaz merely due to my ignorance of Ahmadiyyat. I was the one who stood on that front gate and broke that gate. If you want to hit me, you may do so now.”

Also in attendance was Ustadz Ahmad Suhadi, who was among the attackers in 2005.

Although he did not come to the podium, he related a beautiful story about his relation with Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya. He said that he had sent a proposal to an organisation, seeking

On 17 to 19 January 2020, a few Jamaats held their regional Jalsa at the main headquarters.

It was the first regional Jalsa at the Jamaat headquarters in Indonesia after the incident of 2005.

Although it was a regional Jalsa for only two regions, Ahmadi Muslims from other regions, even from abroad, also attended.

Some attendees described the reason for their attendance at the main headquarters Jalsa in Indonesia as faith-inspiring and a source of happiness. It also helped such people recall memories of the national Jalsa Salana

help for his community, and its acceptance coincided with this Jalsa as it was accepted after a very long just only a short while before his arrival at the Jalsa. For him, this was how God Almighty rewarded his little effort for the Jamaat.

Our good friends from various forums and institutions supported us to hold this event.

Ustadz Ahmad Suhadi even helped the Jamaat to have relations with respected figures around the main headquarters.

In addition, he invited his community to pray together for the peace in the markaz area during Jalsa Salana.

In attendance were other external guests, who included the national chief of Gus Dur Barricade, chief of FKBR (Nationality Forum of Bogor Raya), chief of Patriot Garuda Nusantara of Bogor Regency, head of an Islamic Boarding School Darul Uloom, regional chief of Nahdhatul Ulema in Bogor regency, some priests from various churches in Bogor regency and the chief of the Supreme

Council for the Confucian Religion in Bogor regency.

Our next goal now, for which the Indonesian Jamaat prays earnestly, is for Allah the Almighty to enable us to hold our national Jalsa Salana in the midst of Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa. May Allah the Almighty accept our sincere prayer.

At the closing session of the Jalsa, it was stated that there were about 1,800 Ahmadis in attendance from around 103 branches, 25% of the total branches in Indonesia.

Homeopathy medicine for coronavirus Coronavirus, a lethal and infectious disease is posing an increasing threat to the world. Hazrat Amirul Momineen, Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper, has graciously advised to use the following homeopathic medicine.

My Maryam Part I Having remained ill for quite some time, Hazrat Umm-e-Tahir, Syeda Maryam Begum Sahibara, passed away on 5 March 1944. This naturally brought grief to the Jamaat at large, but it struck her husband, Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IIra the most.

For approximately three months, Huzoorra did not write anything about her. However, under the Islamic teaching of remembering the righteous qualities of the deceased, Huzoorra penned a beautiful obituary of his noble wife, alongside mentioning the noble qualities she possessed and the services she rendered for the Jamaat. This book perfectly depicts Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’sra tenderhearted nature and affection.

Throughout the month of February, the English rendering of this beautiful eulogy will be presented in Al Hakam.

Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IIra

Syeda Umm-e-Tahir’s youth Approximately 36 years ago, the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, settled the nikah of our younger brother, the late Mubarak Ahmad, with Maryam Begum, daughter of Dr Syed Abdus Sattar Shah Sahibra.

The purpose behind the nikah was probably to see the practical fulfilment of some dreams and eliminate any subsequent cautionary aspects.

However, Allah’s decree came to pass and Mubarak Ahmad returned to his Lord. The young girl, who was completely oblivious to the concept of marriage owing to her age, began to be referred to as a widow.

At the time, Maryam was two and a half years old. She would often leave the Gol Kamra [the round room – best known for being a guest room in the life of the Promised Messiahas] where the late Dr Syed Abdus Sattar Shah Sahibra would reside, and along with her niece, Naseera, she would come upstairs [to the main part of the house] and play. At times, they would become somewhat perturbed and start crying and thus, I would sometimes pick up Maryam or Naseera and take them back to the Gol Kamra.

On such occasions, it was unimaginable that the girl I had picked up to take back downstairs would one day become my wife. What was even more unimaginable was that I would one day have to pick her up and lower her, not towards the Gol Kamra, but towards her final resting place; not with the thought that I would see her face again, but with the certainty that the face I saw before me in the coffin would be the last time I would see it with my physical eyes and that I would never be able to speak to her again.

1907 to 1917

The young Mubarak Ahmad passed away and Dr [Syed Abdus Sattar Shah] Sahib’s leave had come to an end. He returned to his work in Raya, District Sialkot. Syed Waliullah Shah Sahib and Dr Syed Habibullah Shah Sahib were studying at school at the time. Both were my friends, but Dr Habib was closer than most friends. We were both very similar and inseparable as peers, but I had never imagined that their sister would again be a part of our family.

My friendship with him was only because of him and not because their sister and our brother were, for a short period, married. Many days and many years had passed and Maryam’s name was erased from our memories.

One day – either in 1917 or 1918, after the demise of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira – I was in the house of my late wife Amatul Hayy. As I left the washroom and approached our room, at the edge of the courtyard that was in between both rooms I noticed a very thin girl dressed in white and, after seeing me, move back against a wooden wall and wrapping herself [as if to hide].

As I entered our room, I asked my late wife, “Amatul Hayy, who is that girl standing outside?” to which she replied, “Did you not recognise her? She is Maryam, daughter of Dr Syed Abdus Sattar Shah Sahib.” I was surprised and said that she had covered herself and that even if she had been in front of me, I would not have been able to recognise her.

After 1907, that was the first time when Maryam came into my thoughts.

Nikah with Maryam Now, I began enquiring whether her marriage had been settled anywhere, but I received the response, “We are Sadat [belonging to the Syed family – the lineage of Hazrat Fatima and Hazrat Ali, Allah be pleased with them]; our widows do not remarry. If she is to marry in the

household of the Promised Messiahas then we will allow it, otherwise she will spend her entire life as a widow.”

This came as a shock to me. Therefore, I tried my utmost to arrange Maryam’s Nikah elsewhere, but it came to no avail.

Eventually, I attempted to convince my brothers through various means. I would

tell them, “Her life should not go to waste in this manner,” and would urge them to consider marrying her, but I always received a negative response.

It was at that point that the thought occurred to me: No action of the Promised Messiahas should prove damaging to a person. Thus, it was for this reason (and

Final promise to Syeda Amatul Hayy A few days after returning from England, Amatul Hayy passed away. I could not find anyone to care for her young children. Right before her demise, Amatul Hayy expressed great concern for her children’s upbringing. She would express her concern especially for Amatul Qayum Begum [along with the rest of the children] by saying, “[Amatur] Rashid, being brought up by a wet-nurse, will not remember me after I am gone. Khalil is only a month-old and will never know me. Amatul Qayum is the eldest; What will become of her?”

She would glance at each of her children one after the other, but on this subject, she never glanced at me. Perhaps she thought to herself, “What does a man know about raising children?”

I would repeatedly look towards her to say something but would supress my feelings in the presence of other people.

Eventually, when we got a moment of privacy, I said to her, “Amatul Hayy, why do you worry so much? If I live, I will look after your children and Insha-Allah will not let any harm come their way.”

For her solace I uttered those words, but in reality, I hadn’t a clue what to do.

Fulfilment of a promise

because I had a cordial friendship with Syed Habibullah Shah Sahib and Syed Mahmudullah Shah Sahib) that I decided to marry Maryam myself.

Thus, in 1920, I sent my proposal through the late Dr Syed Abdus Sattar Shah Sahib, which was accepted and on 7 February 1921 our nikah took place in the old part of Masjid Mubarak [Qadian].

It was more of a house of mourning than a nikah ceremony; all that could be heard was the wailing of worshippers; tears streamed down all faces.

Eventually, I brought Maryam to our home in a very simple manner and left her at the house of Hazrat Ummul Momineen [wife of the Promised Messiahas, Hazrat (Amma Jan) Nusrat Jehan Begum Sahibara]. She allocated a room for her where I would stay with her frequently.

The room where Maryam Siddiqa now resides was the same room where she resided for five years and where her first child was born – Tahir Ahmad (the first, who died at a young age). It was after his birth that she fell extremely ill and this illness eventually led to her demise.

Early days of marriage In the early days of our marriage, [Maryam] was extremely thin and had certain facial features that were not very pleasant to me. Similarly, she had a strong Punjabi accent and I detest the usage of

Punjabi in our home. She was somewhat facetious in nature and while speaking in Urdu, she would often deliberately mix Punjabi words in her sentences to irritate me.

As she was her parent’s favourite child, if she did not like something, it would irritate her and make her cry profusely, causing a stream of tears. At times, she would cry incessantly for a couple of days.

Perhaps this was due to traces of hysteria.

When I travelled to England, there was some sort of friction between her and the late Amatul Hayy and as a result, I became somewhat displeased with her. Upon my return, I found that most of the fault actually lay with Amatul Hayy. Due to that displeasure, in the initial part of the journey, I did not write to Maryam but, Alhamdolillah, Allah soon enabled me to realise the reality and I saved her from any further hurt.

I wrote a loving letter to her from Italy, which she preserved. I wrote a couplet in it also, the gist of which is that Rome is a beautiful city, but without you, it appears in ruins.

One day, that couplet was mentioned in 1930, seven years after my journey to Europe. As soon as she heard the couplet, she shot up and brought the letter to me saying, “I have kept that letter ever since!”

I sent the same couplet to Amatul

The night after Amatul Hayy’s demise, I asked Maryam, “A heavy burden has been placed on my shoulders. Can you help me?” Allah bless her soul a thousand times over for she immediately replied, “Yes, I will take care of them! Just as a mother brings up her children, I will raise them.”

The following day, I brought [Amatul] Qayum and [Amatur] Rashid to Maryam as a way of passing them on to her. Both of us were oblivious that we were, in fact, giving consent to her death, because as a consequence of this responsibility, both of us endured many hardships. However, it was a result of those hardships that we remained hopeful of Allah’s blessings.

Amatul Hayy was very dear to me and still is to this day. But I cannot truthfully say for sure that if she remained alive, she would have attended to her children when they fell ill in the same way as Maryam attended to them. May Allah raise her soul to the closest possible station to His threshold and may Allah show mercy upon me too.

It was no ordinary thing for a 19-yearold girl to suddenly become a mother of three. However, she readily and enthusiastically took up the responsibility and helped me in a time when nobody in the world could. She relieved me of a promise I had made at a time when I saw no way of fulfilling it.

That moment is still before my eyes when I took Qayum and Rashid to Maryam and she embraced them with tearful eyes, saying, “From now on, I am your mother.” The girls, who were still weeping and scared, immediately jumped

into her arms.

A prayer for love that God accepted At that moment, I made a pledge to her: “Maryam, if you raise these children, I promise that I will love you immeasurably”.

I cried and cried before God, praying that Allah developed love in my heart for her, which He heard.

From that day onwards, I had great love for her. Any reservations I ever had were removed and she won my heart over.

A face that was unpleasant for me became the most beautiful face in the world and her carefree attitude which once offended me became her birth right.

Astonishing intelligence Maryam was not very literate, and her handwriting was very untidy. She could not read or write very fluently. She would take lessons for a few days before dropping them, however she was remarkably intelligent. She could take a hint through the subtlest of facial expressions and body language. One would think that she had her very own way of acquiring knowledge of the unseen.

She possessed a very sensitive temperament. Where sarcasm was not the motive, she knew how to extract it; where displeasure was not intended, she would still sense it. If she was treated better than others, even then she would feel as though she was being subjected to injustice.

This was all something that I was the prime subject of, and this was where her intelligence would be rendered useless.

Her pure faith in Ahmadiyyat Maryam had true faith in Ahmadiyyat.

She had a deep love and dedication for the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him. She loved the Holy Quran and would recite it melodiously. She learnt the recitation of the Quran from a hafiz and for that reason – albeit with slight overemphasis – she could pronounce the Arabic t’s and q’s very well.

She was not capable of initiating intellectual discussions but would thoroughly enjoy thought-provoking talks.

On Fridays, if the sermon was on a special subject, after the sermon, I would enter our house with the certainty that Maryam’s face would be beaming with pleasure and that she would immediately overwhelm me with compliments, saying that she had really enjoyed it. This certainty would very rarely be proven wrong. I would always find her waiting for me at the door. Her whole being would be buzzing with ecstasy at such moments.

Hamburg Waqifeen-e-Nau’s audience with Huzoor

A group of 22 Waqifeen-e-Nau from Hamburg, Germany had a mulaqat with Hazrat Amirul Momineen, may Allah be his Helper, on 2 February 2020.

During the mulaqat, Waqifeen-e-Nau had the opportunity to ask Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa a few questions.

Alluding to the continuous upsurge and rapid spread of the coronavirus, a young Waqif-e-Nau asked Huzooraa about his thoughts on the matter. Answering the young Waqif-e-Nau, Huzooraa stated: “On social media, a comedian has expressed and asked why this virus is only spreading throughout developed countries as opposed to the Ebola virus which spread from Afrcia.”

Huzooraa added, “Not much worry and concern was shown for the Ebola virus as opposed to the coronavirus.” Carrying on, Huzooraa said, “During the time of the fourth Khalifa, a virus similar to the coronavirus spread in Indonesia. Viruses similar to the coronavirus have been treated through homeopathy. Thus, you have been informed about the medicine which has been prepared [for the coronavirus].”

One Waqif-e-Nau asked how we can come to know if our istighfar has been accepted by God and if He has forgiven us.

Huzooraa replied: “If you have stopped committing the sin, then know that your istighfar has been accepted and you have been forgiven. If, however, you have not yet changed your ways, this means that the istighfar was not from the heart. In such a case, you should

continue to seek forgiveness and refrain from sin.”

Another young Waqif-e-Nau asked how one can distinguish between religion and cultural influence. Huzoor replied: “The Holy Prophetsa was sent to the people of Arabia as a messenger for the entire world. Thus, as far as culture is concerned, any culture which does not go against the teachings of Islam is acceptable in Islam. For example, clothing oneself, how one carries oneself, eating and drinking, societal relations, all this is accepted in different cultures and is not against Islam.”

Alluding to the lecture he delivered in Berlin titled, Islam and Europe: A Clash of Civilisations? Huzooraa said, “Listen to the lecture I delivered in Berlin as this will make things clear.”

Huzooraa further added, “God has commanded us to offer prayers. Now, whether it be a German who is wearing trousers or a shalwar, or an Arab who wears a long robe, every country has their own style. The purpose is to follow the teachings of Islam and worship God.” Further, Huzoor said, “Islam teaches to worship God, look after the wellbeing of humanity, and this is accepted by all cultures.

Which culture, country or religion teaches to lie? Thus, the fundamental etiquettes are accepted everywhere.”

construct a gate that can proportionally accommodate the inward and outward movement of their possessions, not a small opening like the one which leads into a snake’s hole.

Similarly, we find by reflecting deeply and carefully on the action of God Almighty, i.e. the law of nature, that after giving birth to His creation, God has never desired for it to defy the bounds of servitude (ubudiyyat) and detach itself from God’s providence (rububiyyat). For divine providence has never sought to divorce itself from the phenomenon known as ‘servitude.’ The true philosophy is that those who consider ‘servitude’ to be an agency that possesses any independent power in its own right are mistaken; for God Almighty has not given birth to it as such. The differing levels between us in our knowledge, thoughts and intellects, and our inability to shed ample light on all matters, is manifest evidence of the fact that without the grace of divine providence, “servitude” cannot exist. Every particle and shred of our body by nature may be likened to the angels (who are obedient to God). If this were not the case, the very foundation of medicine and even more so, of prayer, would prove meaningless and ineffectual.

Observe the heaven and earth, and all that is within them, and reflect: is all of this creation, in its being and essence, independent for its own life and existence?

The whole of creation from the heavenly

bodies to the things of this world all inherently possess a nature of servitude to God. Every leaf reveals and every branch proclaims that God’s divinity is in full operation. The deep and profound powers of God which we cannot expound with our own thoughts and strengths – rather which we cannot even fully comprehend – are engaged in their work. Therefore, Allah the Exalted states: “Allah – there is no God but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining.”

This means, Allah Almighty is the only Being that is the compendium of all perfect attributes and who is free from each and every deficiency; it is He alone who is worthy of worship; it is His Being alone that is manifestly evident, for He is Living as an Independent Being and He is Self-Subsisting.

Nothing besides him may be characterised as living or existing independently in its own right. What does this mean exactly? It means that with the exception of Allah Almighty, there is no one else that exists or lives independently without an initial cause, nor can there be any other prime cause – except for God of course – which brought about the creation of this universe with all its wise and balanced order. Hence, this discloses to us that besides God Almighty, there is no other being that can change or alter the creations of this universe or which can be described as having been the source or cause of the life and existence of all things.

100 Years Ago...

The death of Piggott on a moral basis The members of our Jamaat remember that in the course of his religious encounters with the false Elijah Dowie of America, the Promised Messiahas also challenged Piggott – who claimed to be the Messiah and God – in England. In response to this, the former expressed pride and the latter expressed silence. So, Allah annihilated the boastful with the miserable death of torment and sorrow, and the silent was crushed with the death of failure and humiliation. Hence, Piggott lives in his so-called “Abode of love” as an immoral and helpless person, living a failed and dejected life.

Just like Muhammed Hussain, he is a living example of the difference between a truthful one and one who is false. Recently, one of his lovers has run away from him along with her illegitimate children. As Lloyd’s Weekly Newspaper reported in their first issue of the new year, this woman, Sister Ruth, with her two daughters – Glory and Strength, and a boy named Hope – bade farewell to Piggott’s “Abode of love” after a 15-year unlawful stay and ran away to live an anonymous life. The newspaper writes that strange events of the “Abode of love” are about to take place. One of the major reasons for Sister Ruth’s escape is that she was removed from a “special spiritual” place and honour some time ago and her place was given to another bride. The translation of the newspaper article will be published in another issue, Insha-Allah.

At the moment, I once again congratulate the Ahmadiyya Community on the manifestation of yet another sign of the truthfulness of the Promised Messiahas that also appeared in the new year. Moreover, I humbly beseech and request [members of the Jamaat] to pray for me.

Plan for a new mission By the grace of Allah, we are benefitting from the means of postal communication which is available for tabligh. This humble one and Chaudhry Sahib take advantage of the opportunity at hand. In the recent mail, a letter has been received from Brother Hassan Simon, a former German councilman of Haito or Java (who had been imprisoned

in Australia and has now returned to his motherland, Koln [Cologne], Germany). He has sent a scheme for carrying out tabligh in the East Indian Islands. He states: “Do not think that I have been neglecting the service of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat. I have been thinking of ways to spread the message of our Community.” The scheme, in which the proposals for establishing the Ahmadiyya Mission in Java and Sumatra Islands along with various other Dutch regions are mentioned, has been sent to Hazrat Khaliful Masih [IIra].”

Letters from the viceroy of Ireland and the prime minister of the United Kingdom From the letters of greetings that were sent at the beginning of the new year, which also mentioned the specific teachings of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, responses of two letters have been received.

1. The secretary of Lord French Viceroy of Ireland (who was sent New Year’s greetings for showing courage and valour, similar to that of Lord Hardinge, the former Viceroy of India, and for justly treating the people of God), writes: “Viceregal Lodge, Dublin, 2 January 1920 “Respected Sir! His Excellency has asked me to write you a letter and sincerely thank you for your kind letter and wish you a very happy New Year on his behalf.

“Sincerely yours, EM Counselor Assistant, Private Secretary” 2. His Excellency, the prime minister of the United Kingdom was sent greetings for the New Year along with a request to respect the views of the Eastern people on the issues to be resolved in the year ahead. It was also said that he be granted the strength to act justly towards the people of God, irrespective of their faith, nation, colour or ethnicity. The following response has been received: “10 Downing Street, Whitehall S W, 2 January 1920 “Respected Sir! The prime minister expressed to me his desire to sincerely thank you for your letter of 30 December and a very happy New Year.

“Sincerely yours, F L Stevenson”

An evening to remember Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib Syed Mukarram Nazeer Canada Correspondent

Talim-ul-Islam College Old Students Association organised a programme in remembrance of literary icon and former Principal of Talim-ul-Islam College, the late Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib.

Chaudhry Sahib was born in Maseetan, a small village in Firozpur district of West Punjab in 1917. He completed his master’s degree from Government College Lahore and went on to teach at Punjab University where he was a member of the University Senate and Academic Council. He also taught at FC College Lahore and served as the president of the department of philosophy at the college. He accepted Ahmadiyyat in 1940 and continued to serve the Jamaat until his demise.

This event was organised to recognise his contribution to Talim-ul-Islam College and to Urdu poetry. The evening took place at the multi-purpose hall of the Ahmadiyya Abode of Peace, Toronto.

Mahmud Chughtai Sahib and Waseem Ahmad Sahib reported that the programme was divided into two parts. The first part was presided by Amir Jamaat Canada, Lal Khan Malik Sahib and Abdul Hameed Hamidi Sahib hosted the programme.

After tilawat and poem, Naib Amir Toronto West Jamaat and convener of Talimul-Islam College Old Student Association, Brigadier (retired) Abdul Ghafoor Ahsan Sahib welcomed all guests and presented different aspects of the life of Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib.

Similarly Lal Khan Malik Sahib (Amir Jamaat Canada), Hadi Ali Chaudhry Sahib (Naib Amir Canada), Mubarak Ahmad Ansari Sahib (former Professor Talim-ulIslam College), Dr Nasir Ahmad Pervaiz Parwazi Sahib (former Professor Talim-ulIslam College), Muhammad Aslam Sabir Sahib (Lecturer Jamia Ahmadiyya Canada), Dildar Ahmad Sahib (Secretary Mission Canada Colonel [retired]) and poet Tasleem Elahi Zulfi Sahib shared their memories of Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib.

In 1944, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib joined Talim-ul-Islam College in Qadian as one of the founding professors.

During his teaching tenure, he taught philosophy, psychology and English. He later became principal of the college and remained until his retirement. He also had a

keen interest in the promotion of sports and once served as the senior vice president of Pakistan’s basketball team. During his time at Talim-ul-Islam College, he managed an array of sports, which included swimming, rowing, basketball and hiking. After retirement, he served as head of the English department of Jamia Ahmadiyya Rabwah.

He had the honour of serving as private secretary to Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIIrh, Wakil Waqf-e-Nau and Wakil-ut-Tasnif.

He was very righteous, had a pleasant personality, was a caring teacher and holds a special status as an excellent Urdu poet within Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya and Pakistan.

Upon the instruction of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa, Chaudhry Sahib’s Urdu poetry collection was published posthumously under the title Ashkon kay Charagh. He passed away on 14 August 2015 at the age of 98 in Rabwah, Pakistan.

The second part of the programme was a poetry session presided by Naib Amir Canada, Hadi Ali Chaudhry Sahib. The session started with the screening of a video of Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Sahib reciting his poetry. This was followed by poetry recitals by many poets, including Abdul Hameed Hamidi Sahib, Abdul Karim Qudsi Sahib, Hadi Ali Chaudhry Sahib, Muneef Ashar Malih Abaadi Sahib, Tasleem Elahi Zulfi Sahib and Salman Athar Sahib.

The audience enjoyed the poetry and appreciated all the poets.

The programme concluded with silent prayer and dinner.

an Ahmadi scholar, Maulana Abul Ata Jalandhari delivered a speech.

12 February 1955: An earthquake hit parts of Balochistan which caused widespread destruction. A series of aftershocks terrified the affected locals for next many days.

The Jamaat began extensive relief efforts that were applauded by many.

12 February 1957: Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra travelled from Mirpur Khas to Nasir Abad during his tour of Sindh. Huzoorra stayed in Nasir Abad for two days and reviewed cultivation of agricultural property.

Abu Lahab in the Holy Quran With reference to the second verse of Surah al-Lahab: َ َ َ​َ َ ‫ﺗ َّﺒ ْﺖ ﻳَ َﺪا ا ِﺑ ْﻰ ﻟ َ َﻬ ٍﺐ ّو ﺗ ّﺐ‬

“Perished be the two hands of Abu Lahab, and so perish he”, one may consider this to merely denote the paternal uncle of the Holy Prophetsa, Abu Lahab.

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra gave the following explanation with regard to this verse and chapter:

13 February 1901: Hazrat Hakim Maulvi Nuruddinra had to travel to Sialkot, where he was needed in a court proceeding for a witness statement. On his way to Sialkot, he delivered speeches in Lahore.

13 February 1920: Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra set out for his 10-day tour of Lahore and Amritsar.

13 February 1925: Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra urged the need to spread the message of the Jamaat across the world and encouraged every member of the Jamaat to take part in this effort.

13 February 1944: Hazrat Sheikh Muhammad Bakhshra passed away.

This companion was a renowned landlord from Karianwala district in Gujarat and entered the Jamaat in 1890. Once, he was facing severe financial hardships and requested the Promised Messiahas for prayers.

Upon this, the Promised Messiahas composed his famous poem titled “Riddance from difficulties”, the opening verse of which is given below. As a result of this prayer, God removed Hazrat Muhammad Baksh Sahib’s difficulties. �� � ‫اك � اك دن‬ �� � � � �� � � � � � �� � � � � � � � “Surely, one day you will face your fate; No one holds power against that which is decreed.”

13 February 1953: During his Friday Sermon, Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra discoursed upon pre-emptive measures for the establishment of peace during the violent anti-Ahmadiyya agitations in Pakistan. Huzoorra said that if the opponents won, then Ahmadis would be proved as liars, but as they were truthful, Ahmadiyyat would prevail. Huzoorra also instructed all Ahmadis to remain where they were during the agitations.

13 February 1955: A famous Italian academic and linguistic visited Rabwah and enjoyed the blessed audience of Hazrat Muslehe-Maudra during his short stay.

In [this] Surah, “Abu Lahab” does not signify a person, rather it points towards that nation which will prevail over the world in the latter days and will ignite the flames of animosity against the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, or Islam; or they will create such inventions that produce fire or flames. Then, this nation will gather neighbouring nations alongside them and strengthen their bloc. These nations will resemble his [Abu Lahab’s] hands.

Upon observation, we realise that there are two such blocs in the current era that are united against the Holy Prophetsa or Islam.

One bloc consists of some Western powers, while the other bloc has some Eastern powers along with allies.

“Abu Lahab” here points towards these two blocs. They are like Abu Lahab apparently as their complexion is reddish white, and also intrinsically, for they are working on creating atom bombs and hydrogen bombs, which will result in fire and flames.

Another way they resemble Abu Lahab is that eventually, they will be enveloped in the fire of warfare. They kindled a fire by producing harmful literature against Prophet Muhammadsa and this is another warrant for their being likened to Abu Lahab.

In the verse: َ َ َ​َ َ ‫ﺗ َّﺒ ْﺖ ﻳَ َﺪا ا ِﺑ ْﻰ ﻟ َ َﻬ ٍﺐ ّو ﺗ ّﺐ‬ “Perished be the two hands of Abu Lahab, and so perish he”, the past tense has been used. However, in Arabic, to express the certainty and conviction of an incident about to occur, the past tense is used. In other words, what is being said here is, “Consider this done.”

Therefore, tabbat [he perished] here means that it is a fact that they shall perish, and their task of annihilating Islam shall not be accomplished.

Another point worth noting is that the verse under discussion mentions the destruction of Abu Lahab’s hands, whereas later, his own destruction is foretold. It is clear from this fact that the ones who were to later be termed as “Abu Lahab” – i.e.

Western and Eastern powers – would both try and gather as many nations under their

umbrella and those nations would unite together and serve their respective bloc as its hands. The “Abu Lahab” nations would take pride in these blocs and count them among its strengths.

However, Allah will create such means that first, the helpers will be destroyed and then, he who is worthy of being called “Abu Lahab” and the nucleus of these nations will be destroyed.

Another sublime point which must be mentioned here is that when the ahadith mention those schemes that will rise up against Islam, they also mention that in the midst of this mischief, the Almighty Allah would send the Promised Messiah who would challenge those evils, but through prayer, as it is mentioned: ‫�� ﻳﺪان ��ﺣﺪ ﻟﻘﺘﺎﻟﻬﻢ‬ “No one shall be able to fight them.”

(Mishkat, Kitab-ul-Fitan) Material arsenal will not be effective in challenging these anti-Islamic peoples as the Muslims would be weak and feeble, but Allah will listen to the prayers of the Promised Messiah; He will create such circumstances that just as salt dissolves in Continued on next page

100 Years Ago...

An Ahmadiyya Mosque in London Tash-heezul-Azhan, February 1920 The former editor of Paigham-e-Sulah [magazine], Dost Muhammad Sahib ridiculed Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Sahib in his letter, asking, “Where is your Ahmadiyya Mosque about which you have reported in the newspaper that Eid Prayer was offered in it?”

It is Divine Providence that on the one hand, this taunt was being written in London, against the practice of righteous men. I say this because the ummah of the prophets ً have ُ to initially follow the ُ ْ َ َ َ instruction of ‫اج َﻌ��ا ب ُ ُيوﺗﻜ ْﻢ ِﻗ ْبﻠﺔ‬ ‫[ و‬make your houses a qibla (mosque)] and the holy hadith also states ‫[ جﻌﻠﺖ لى ا��رض مﺴﺠﺪا‬the entire earth has been made a mosque for me] and therefore, a room is being used as a mosque in London. On the other hand, Hazrat Mufti Sahib was writing on the very same day that an Ahmadiyya mosque should be built there with our own efforts.

On 4 January, this taunt was being written and at the same time, God impressed upon the heart of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih to appeal for the Ahmadiyya mosque. Hence, he expressed this subject in Masjid Mubarak on 6 January and 30,000 rupees were already sent to London by 14 January [for the new mosque]. The money reached there with an increase in its value to nearly 52,000, as the rate of the pound dropped in the UK. Owing to the unchallengeable ways of God, the message of 4 January was published on 14 January and so the slander that was about to be conveyed by the brothers of Joseph became a dagger and was stuck in their ribs before it could reach us.

The appeals for chanda are made quite frequently but the enthusiasm present in the participation of this call suggests that God’s will is to build the Ahmadiyya Mosque in

London at the earliest possible time, which will attract many blessings. In order to grant an opportunity of doing good deeds, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih has raised the demand of chanda to 100,000 rupees, but the speed of offerings suggest that even this sum will be collected very soon.

Therefore, members of the Jamaat should take part in it with all possible haste, lest this opportunity go out of hand. Let alone London, mosques will be built all over Europe. Moreover, instead of bells ringing, the listeners of “Allah-o-Akbar” [God is great] will surely hear it but the privilege and significance which this first mosque possesses will not be held by the second. So friends!

Once again, in ‫اﻧﻔاق ا��موال فى ﺳبيﻞ‬ ّٰ ���‫[ ا‬sacrificing wealth in the way of God], present the model of the companions before the world. َ َ َّ َ َ َ َ ْ ْ َ ْ َ ّٰ َ َ ْ َ ّٰ َ َ َ ُ ُ ْ َ َ َّ ‫ِإﻧﻤﺎ �ﻌﻤﺮ ﻣﺴ‬ ‫اﻟﺼ�َ�ة َوآﺗﻰ‬ ‫ﺎﺟﺪ ا�� ِ� ﻣ ٰﻦ آﻣﻦ ِﺑﺎ�� ُ ِ� واﻟﻴﻮ َ ِم ا�� ِ� ِ� وأﻗﺎم‬ َ َ َّ َ ّ َّ َ ِ ْ ُ ُ ْ َ ‫اﻟﺰ�ﺎة َوﻟ َ ْﻢ ﻳَﺨﺶ ِإ�� ا�� َ� � ﻓ َﻌ َﺴﻰ أوﻟ� ِ�ﻚ أ ْن ﻳَﻜﻮْﻧﻮْا ِﻣ َﻦ اﻟ ُﻤ ْﻬ َﺘ ِﺪﻳْ َﻦ‬ [“Verily, he alone is worthy of maintaining the Mosques of Allah in a good and flourishing condition who believes in Allah, and the Last Day, and observes Prayer, and pays the Zakat, and fears none but Allah; so these it is who are far more likely to be counted among the guided”].

The attributes of ٰ ٰ ّٰ ‫ اﻳﺘاءا���وة‬،‫ اﻗامﺔ الﺼ��ة‬،���‫اﻳمان با‬ [having faith in Allah, performing prayer, offering zakat (obligation for a Muslim to donate a certain proportion of wealth each year for charitable causes)] and showing fear before none but Allah, are only present in you, so the mosques would surely be inhabited by you.

May you be granted assistance through the divine power of the Mahdi.

and had told him that it would not be possible to overcome the forces foretold in Surah al-Lahab through physical power. It is for this reason that the Holy Prophetsa said: ‫�� ﻳﺪان ��ﺣﺪ ﻟﻘﺘﺎﻟﻬﻢ‬ “No one shall be able to fight them.”

Thus, the verse: َ َ َ​َ َ ‫ﺗ َّﺒ ْﺖ ﻳَ َﺪا ا ِﺑ ْﻰ ﻟ َ َﻬ ٍﺐ ّو ﺗ ّﺐ‬ “Perished be the two hands of Abu Lahab, and so perish he” has the prophecy contained in it that the nations who attack Islam and the peoples who rise in favour of such nations will all see the pit of destruction and will not be able to destroy Islam.” (Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IIra, Tafsir-e-Kabir, Vol. 10, pp. 510-511)

water, these anti-Islamic forces will rise up against one another and be the cause of each other’s destruction.

The Holy Quran has interpreted the allies of the nations worthy of being called “Abu Lahab” as “hands” and has said: َ َ ‫ﺗ َّﺒ ْﺖ ﻳَ َﺪا ا ِﺑ ْﻰ ﻟ َ َﻬ ٍﺐ‬ “Perished be the two hands of Abu Lahab”.

In a hadith, where the revolts of the latter days have been mentioned, the word “yadaan” [two hands] has been used. This tells us that Allah the Almighty had given news to the Holy Prophetsa of the coming trials in the latter days within his Ummah

The flag-bearer of Islam Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra, on the life of the Promised Messiahas, said: “All the world witness[ed] that he who was once derided as a disbeliever and a heretic, proved to be the standard bearer of Islam; and he who was declared an enemy of Islam was shown to be its only saviour. As supposed scholars and mystics pursued their livelihoods, rest and ease, the Promised Messiahas and his followers fretted over the plight of Islam and faced down its enemies. One can only imagine how he captivated the hearts of those who believed in him so that they took delight in nothing except the service of religion and in exalting the honour of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. And at last, when the day came, wherein he restored Islam to its full glory and established a community of faithful devotees, this loved one of God joined his Beloved. His enemies who had constantly dreamt of his destruction were thereby left confounded by the affair.”

“Our crown is now full”: New Year Reception in Brussels

The structure of disbelief

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra said: “If today our entire Jamaat purifies their hearts and make it so that no loss, no trouble, no difficulty and no hardship deviate them from the right path, and let alone from the enemies, even if they suffer any Mohammad Arsalan Belgium Correspondent

On 29 January 2020, a New Year’s reception was organised by Baitul Mujeeb Jamaat in Uccle, Brussels. Uccle is the city where our newly built mosque, Baitul Mujeeb, is located.

A month prior to the event, invitations were distributed throughout the area, many being given personally to neighbours, religious representatives, government officials and to NGOs. On the day of the reception, three Mayors attended the reception; Mr Borris Dillies, Mayor of Uccle city, Mr Alexis Calmeyn, Mayor of Drogenbos (a neighbouring town) and Mr Yves Ghequiere, Mayor of Linkebeek. They were accompanied by their counsellors as well.

There were a large number of distinguished guests, including the President of the Flemish parliament of Brussels, Mr Fouad Ahidar and various other Members of Parliament, Ambassadors and different representatives of Ambassadors such as Ukraine, Hungry, Nicaragua, Israel, Indonesia and Poland.

Faith leaders also attended, such as the Priest of the Catholic Church of Uccle, the Rabbi of the synagogue of Uccle and many others.

Neighbours and friends of the community were in attendance as well.

The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran with its translation.

Dr Idrees Ahmad Sahib, Amir Jamaat-eAhmadiyya Belgium delivered the welcome

speech. Hafiz Ehsan Secundar Sahib, Missionary-in-Charge Belgium delivered a presentation on the Jamaat’s activities at a national level and local level in Uccle and its neighboring cities.

After the presentation, a short video was shown entitled “A man of peace”, consisting of some highlights from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V’saa speeches, which he delivered in different parliaments around the world. The participants listened attentively to the topic of how to achieve long lasting peace.

sorrow and grief from their near ones, they should not be discouraged because they did not accept the Promised Messiahas for anyone else but believed him for their own eternal goodness. Hence, if all the people of our community achieve this goal, then our progress will be accelerated manifold, and as big structures and walls fall and perish before floods, so will the structure of disbelief collapse before this river of spirituality.”

The video had a very positive impact on our guests. They really appreciated Huzoor’saa efforts for the establishment of world peace.

The Mayor of Uccle, Mr Borris Dilles said that with the first mosque in the city of Uccle, “our crown is now full” with the presence of churches, temples, a synagogue and now a mosque. He also said that he knew the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat for the last 10 years, as he was also present, as counselor, when the laying of the first stone took place back in 2011. Mr Dilles said that the Jamaat is very active in bringing peace and togetherness, to work in unity, to love and respect like their motto “Love for All

Hatred for None” entails. At the end of his speech he wished the Jamaat a positive future and encouraged us to continue our efforts which are very much appreciated by the town of Uccle.

The Mayors of Linkebeek and Drogenbos also appreciated the invitation at such an event where they were enlightened by the message and efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat nationally and internationally.

The Priest of the Catholic Church and the Rabbi of the Jewish community also congratulated our Jamaat for our messages and activities of brotherhood and living

together in respect. They said they will continue their collaboration with our Jamaat to promote peace and tolerance. They both finished their words with the motto “Love for All Hatred for None”.

The programme concluded with a silent prayer followed by a traditional dinner.

An exhibition was set up which and books on the Jamaat were distributed and liked by the attendees.

The attendance of the event was 105 nonAhmadi guests. Many of them left positive feedback and thanked us for reaching out and introducing them to the true teachings of Islam.

Responding to Allegations

“Let Jesus die for therein lies the glory of Islam” as

“Remember, the religion of the cross cannot die unless the Messiah is allowed to pass away. After all, what benefit is there in considering him alive in contradiction to the teaching of the Quran? Let him die so that this faith [Islam] may live again.

“God manifested the death of the Messiah through His Word; and on the night of the Mi‘raj [spiritual ascension of the Holy Prophetsa] the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw him dwelling among the dead. And yet, you still do not believe in his death. What manner of faith is this? Do you prefer the tales of men over the Word of God? What kind of religion is this?

“Not only did our Messenger, peace and

blessings of Allah be upon him, testify that he had seen Jesus among the souls of the dead, but even by his own death, the Prophet demonstrated that none of the Prophets who came before him were still alive. But, just as our opponents have abandoned the Quran, they have also renounced the Sunnah; for death is a part of the Sunnah of our Prophet.

“If Jesus was still alive, then death would be a dishonour to our Messenger. For as long as you do not believe in the death of Jesus, you will stand in defiance of both the Quran and Sunnah. I do not deny the greatness of Jesus, peace be upon him, despite the fact that I have been informed

by God that the Messiah of Muhammad[sa] occupies a higher status than the Messiah of

Moses. Nevertheless, I hold the Messiah son of Mary in high esteem, inasmuch as I am spiritually the Khatam-ul-Khulafa [the Seal of the Caliphs] in Islam, just as the Messiah son of Mary was the Khatam-ul-Khulafa of the Israelite dispensation.” (Noah’s Ark, p.

28-29) The opponents of the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas suggest that proving the death of Prophet Jesusas was nothing significant and assert that many people were convinced of Jesus’as passing even before the claim of the founder of the Ahmadiyya Jamaat, for example Ibn Hazm in the early age of Islam and in the recent past, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan of India, who were both convinced of Jesus’as death.

One of the defects of the ummah that occurred after the third century AH was that the majority of Muslims believed Jesusas to be living in the heavens with his physical body. Moreover, they awaited his bodily decent from the heavens in the latter days.

However, there was also a small number of people of the third century AH, and many still exist, who believe in the death of Jesusas on the basis of conclusive evidence present in the Holy Quran.

In the past, belief in the life of Jesusas was merely an ijtihadi [independent reasoning] error, but in the time of the founder of Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya and shortly before that, this mistake became a formidable dragon which benefited Christian priests and through their efforts, millions of Muslims abandoned Islam and converted to Christianity.

Christian clergy used to reason, “Muslims consider Muhammad’s visit to the heavens on the night of Mi‘raj to be a superiority, but if only one night in the heavens is a source of distinction, then evaluate the superiority of our Lord Jesus Christ who is sitting in the heavens for not one night or a week or a month or a year or a century, but for two thousand years.”

They used to say, “When danger arises, man protects his most beloved thing but when Muhammad was endangered by the threat of his enemies, the God of Muslims wounded him and caused him to fall on the ground by his enemies, covered in blood.”

Christian pastors used to argue that on the other hand, when Jesus Christ was threatened, according to the belief of the then Muslims, God did not allow any enemy to touch their Lord Jesus and sent His angels who carried him safely to the heavens and placed him beside God where no enemy can reach him. They would emphasise that every prophet in the world was threatened by his opponents, some of whom were martyred and those who survived possible martyrdom were wounded, bloodstained and ensanguined by their enemies. In the Christians’ view, except for their Lord Jesus, none from the prophets of God were taken to the heavens in order to protect them from danger and his magnificent unrivaled protection shows that in the sight of God, the status of Jesus Christ is superior to all other prophets and he is the most beloved of God. Clergymen would say, “If a person has to cross a river and there are only two boats on the shore and from the two sailors of the boat, only one is alive, then anyone who wishes to cross the river safely will be seated in the boat with a living sailor and not in the boat which is empty due to its sailor having passed away.” Reasoning from this tale, they used to submit that the world is a river and that every human being came here as a traveler and according to the belief of Muslims, the sailor of Islam has been buried in Medina, whereas the sailor of Christianity is living and will come back into the world. Therefore, if Muslims want to attain salvation, then they should get on the Christian boat, whose sailor will come and take them across the river.

God Almighty responded to the above arguments of Christian priests through His Messiah of the latter days. The Promised declared through divine Messiahas revelation that the regeneration of Islam lies Continued on page 14

Misconceptions about Kohl and fevers

Hazrat Mir Muhammad Ishaqra

The stone used for Kohl [surma] The word ithmad has been used in the hadith with regard to applying kohl [surma].

I would like to mention an important point regarding this word. Ithmad is a soft stone that is used to produce high quality kohl.

There is also a prevalent belief amongst people that the Tur Mountain, upon which Prophet Mosesas asked God to show Himself, was burnt to ashes after God’s manifestation.

The stone from that mountain, they believe, is the ithmad stone. However this is not true.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira would point out that the Tur Mountain is still standing [so how could this belief be true?].

Fever: the heat of hell The following is mentioned in the hadith: َ َ َّ َ ْ َ َ ْ ‫الحُ ّمى ِم ْن ف ْي ِح َج َهن َم فأبْ ِر ُدوها بِال َما ِء‬ Meaning that fever is actually the heat of hell and one should reduce this heat by applying cold water. The word “hell” in this hadith refers to the intensity of heat [produced by a fever].

Some critics [referring to this hadith] say that having a bath or shower is detrimental during a fever. But in truth, the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, never said that one should have a shower or bath during every type of fever, rather it was meant for those fevers that develop as a result of intense heat; having a

bath or pouring water over the head is not detrimental during such a fever.

Hence, those critics who raise objections against the wisdom of the Holy Prophetsa are actually ignorant and devoid of knowledge themselves. They have no understanding of the atmospheric conditions of Arabia, how the temperaments of Arabs were and what the most common reason for catching a fever was.

Our youth Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra instructed:

“I have repeatedly drawn the attention of our Jamaat towards this matter, that nations cannot be reformed without the reformation of the youth. We cannot truly step towards the advancement of this Jamaat until the new generations adhere to religion and those doctrines, which are established upon the earth by the prophets and the chosen ones of God Almighty.”

in accepting the fact that Jesusas of Nazareth passed away. Thus, he advised the Muslims in the following manner: “O my friends, now pay heed to my last advice. I am telling you a great secret which you must always bear in mind and it is that in all your dialogues with the Christians you must change your method and approach and try to convince the Christians that Jesus son of Mary has died forever. This is the line of argument which will lead you to victory over the Christians and will force them to quit the field.

“There is no need for you to waste your valuable time in lengthy dialogues. Just insist upon the death of Jesus ... When you succeed in convincing them that Jesus is also among the dead, you shall succeed in driving away the Christian faith from the face of the earth. Engrain it in your minds that so long as their god does not die, their faith also shall continue to exist. All other arguments with them are of little gain. They have only one pillar of their faith and that is that Jesus son of Mary is still alive in heaven.

Shatter this pillar and then raise your eyes and see where the Christian faith has gone.

Now it is the will of God that this same pillar be razed and the breeze of His Unity may now blow over Europe and Asia. That is why He has sent me and through His special revelations has told me that Jesus[as] son of Mary has died and I have come in his spirit according to His promise. Allah’s promise is always fulfilled.” (Izala-e-Auham, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 3, p. 402) Consider each of the aforementioned arguments of Christian priests through which they misled the Muslims as a sample and place these words of the Promised Messiahas before each example: “He [God] has sent me and through His special revelations and has told me that Jesus[as] son of Mary has died and I have come in his spirit according to His promise.” From countless others, this single divine discourse shatters every argument of the clergy and renders them ineffective.

Prophets of God appear in this world to establish tawhid [belief in the oneness of Allah]. The Holy Prophetsa was the greatest of all prophets. Like every other prophet, he also came to preach tawhid and eliminate shirk [associating partners with Allah].

However, even before his claim, Ibn Abi Kabshah used to reject idolatry in Mecca and Hazrat Umar’sra uncle Zaid used to propagate tawhid. Moreover, the majority of Jews living in Arabia and other countries were convinced of the oneness of Allah and repudiated shirk.

Thus, the rejection of idolatry by Ibn Abi Kabshah, Zaid’s faith in the unity of God and the belief of millions of Jews living in Arabia and other countries in tawhid before the claim of the Holy Prophetsa do not tarnish his divine mission of establishing tawhid.

Likewise, it is irrational and absurd to negate the mission of the Mahdi and Messiah of the age if Sir Syed Ahmad Khan of India was convinced of Jesus’as death before his claim or even if a small group of other people believed that Jesusas passed away.

The glass of Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud, talking to Majlis Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya, said: “I am reminding Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya that they should set such a high example that the spirit of Islam is kept alive generation after generation. Islam in itself is a complete faith.

However, even the most flavoursome juice needs a glass. Similarly, the soul of Islam requires a glass in order to be served to others. Our Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya are those glasses in which the spirit of Islam will be kept intact and through them it will be passed onto others.”

Educating Michigan Jamaat on administrative roles in national amila

Muhammad Ahmad Sahib from Detroit reports that Jamaat USA’s Midwest regional office-bearers gathered over the weekend at Mahmood Mosque, Michigan for a refresher course on 25 January 2020. The event was attended by office-bearers from Detroit, Columbus and Dayton.

A team comprising of five members of the national amila travelled to Detroit to organise the event. The National team included Mukhtar Malhi Sahib (National General Secretary), Ali Iqtidar Bajwa Sahib

(Assistant General Secretary), Mubashar Ahmad Sahib (Secretary Sanat-o-Tijarat [Trade and Industry]), Rafiq Sayed Sahib (Secretary Jaidad [Property]) and Abdul Quddus Malik Sahib (Chairman Qaza Board).

The formal programme started with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address by the Regional Missionary, Shamshad Nasir Sahib.

Shamshad Sahib highlighted the significance of keeping up to date with the current rules and regulations of Nizame-Jamaat. He then invited Mukhtar Malhi

Sahib to the stage, who provided a summary of the Jamaat’s rules and regulations that included administrative and general rules.

He then led a scenario-based session and provided the correct courses of action in each of the cases.

The latest guidance from Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa for each case, was played via short video clips.

Rafiq Sayed Sahib then gave a summary of how the national jaidad department works and how various projects along with related budgets are managed. The details regarding the approval process for

new construction projects, upgrades and maintenance of existing properties was talked through. Many misunderstandings related to property matters were also clarified.

Later, Mubashar Ahmad Sahib gave a motivating talk. This included the history and purpose of the sanat-o-tijarat department and how it can help the Jamaat members in establishing themselves via either starting a small business or various other skilled jobs to earn a decent living.

He encouraged young members of the Jamaat to explore various entrepreneurial options and gave a wide range of references of various immigrants who came to the United States with very little and became very successful founders of tech companies. Many immigrants became successful and are running large Fortune 500 companies. He quoted various sayings of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IIra where he encouraged Jamaat members to not only excel in education but also in trade.

Towards the end of the day, Shamshad Nasir Sahib thanked the national team for the valuable guidance and presentations on respective departmental topics. He also thanked members of the three chapters of the Midwest region for coming together to attend the refresher course. Shamshad Sahib also urged all office-bearers to work hard to establish the unity and love of God, to spread the peaceful message of Islam and help humanity.

In the previous Friday Sermon, as I announced the new year of Waqf-e-Jadid, I mentioned the positions of the jamaats of various countries. In that sermon I stated that among the jamaats of UK, in terms of total collection of chanda Waqf-e-Jadid, Islamabad Jamaat stood first. However, later on, it came to light that this report was incorrect. In fact, Aldershot Jamaat had attained the first position and Islamabad Jamaat was second.

I do not wish to dwell on why and how it happened. Nevertheless, this correction was important to highlight. Hence, I wished to mention this at the outset. Aldershot Jamaat is, Masha-Allah, offering great sacrifices.

specially wrote to me stating how some of the ladies had offered exceptional sacrifices.

Their passion for sacrifice is exemplary.

May Allah the Almighty bless their wealth and their families.

In the previous sermon, I generally mentioned incidents of sacrifice made by poorer people from the developing countries so that it may instil the same passion among the affluent people and they may understand the spirit of sacrifice.

Otherwise, by the grace of Allah, there are also many such people in these developed countries who offer sacrifices whilst ignoring their own worldly needs. In any case, as I mentioned, among the jamaats of UK, Aldershot stood first in Waqf-e-Jadid

collection.

Now, I will turn to the topic of today’s sermon, which is the accounts of the Badri Companionsra. In the sermon two weeks ago, I was relating the accounts of Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah. Some of the narrations were still remaining and so today I will relate some further accounts from his life.

However, a reference that I mentioned in the last sermon needs to be corrected.

Although I realised at the time that perhaps there was something incorrect in relation to the reference, but I did not mention it at the time to those who send the references. However, our team at the Research Cell themselves realised the error and sent in the correction. As a result,

my misunderstanding was also removed.

Masha-Allah, they work extremely diligently in searching and collating these references, but sometimes, they hastily go through such references whereby similar accounts of two different companions become mixed up. Likewise, sometimes, the reality of the account is not conveyed properly due to not choosing the most befitting words whilst translating from the original Arabic references. In any case, now they have themselves sent in a correction in this regard, which I will mention first.

Thereafter, the remaining accounts will be related.

Friday 7 February 2020 | AL HAKAM Ubadah, it was said that the Holy Prophetsa established a bond of brotherhood between Hazrat Saadra and Tulaib bin Umair, who had migrated from Mecca to Medina. According to Ibn Ishaq, the bond of brotherhood established by the Holy Prophetsa was between Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah and Hazrat Abu Dharra Ghaffari. However, some disagree with this and Waqidi has rejected this suggestion because, according to him, the Holy Prophetsa established this bond of brotherhood between the companions before the Battle of Badr and Hazrat Abu Dhar Ghaffarira was not present in Medina at the time. He did not participate in the battles of Badr, Uhud and Khandaq. He presented himself to the Holy Prophetsa after these battles. In any case, I mentioned that this was the argument given by Waqidi.

However, this is not the case, the narration about the bond of brotherhood was with reference to Hazrat Mundhirra bin Amr bin Khunais. (Usdul Ghabah, Vol. 5, p.

258, Mundhir bin Amrra, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 2003) The Rabwah Research Cell wrote that the book from which they took this particular reference from also had the name of Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah and they mistakenly placed this account with Hazrat Saad bin Ubadahra. The actual reference in regard to establishing the bond of brotherhood is with reference to Hazrat Mundhirra bin Amr, the details of which I have already mentioned in the previous sermon on 25 January of last year. Nonetheless, this was the clarification and now I shall continue to narrate the accounts.

When the Battle of the Ditch had taken place, the Holy Prophetsa contemplated sending Uyainah bin Hisn a third of the dates of Medina, on the condition that the people of the Ghatfan tribe travelling with him would go back. With the exception of all else, the Holy Prophetsa took counsel from only Hazrat Saadra bin Muadh and Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah. Both of them replied, “O Messengersa of Allah, if you have been commanded by God Almighty to do so then by all means proceed in doing so.

However, if this is not the case, then by God we shall give them nothing but the sword” (i.e. we will take what is our right, or they shall receive whatever punishment was due as a result of this hypocrisy or breaking of their oath). Upon this, the Holy Prophetsa stated, “I have not been instructed in this regard, rather it was my personal opinion which I shared with both of you.” They both then answered, “O Messengersa of Allah, these people did not even expect such treatment from us in the jahiliyyah (period of ignorance prior to Islam), so why now, after God Almighty has guided us through you?” (In other words, the rules and customs which were in place before should still apply to them now.) The Holy Prophetsa was pleased with their answer. (Usdul Ghabah, Vol. 2, p. 442, Saad bin Ubadahra, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2003) Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad Sahibra has mentioned the details of this, with regard to the conditions during the Battle of the Ditch, as follows: “These days were ones of grave pain, apprehension and danger. As the siege grew longer and longer, the Muslims naturally began to lose their strength to fight and although they were full of faith and sincerity, their bodies, which of course

Reclaiming Qadian Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih II, may Allah be pleased with him, with regard to remembering Qadian, said: “The detachment from Qadian has undoubtedly been a cause of grief for people.

This grief has personally had an effect upon me as well. However, as I departed Qadian, I vowed that I would not mourn over it ... At the time, one of my daughters gave birth to a child. It had only been a brief period since her marriage had taken place and within one year, a child was born to her. Her mother had passed away.

She came to ask leave of me as her eyes shed tears. I placed my hand on her shoulder and said, ‘Be patient. This is not the time to weep; it is the time for work.’

Thus, I strongly adhered to my vow.

“On some occasions, I feel as if my heart will shatter to pieces. However, in my opinion, I believe that if I have made a resolve, why should I cloud that resolve with tears? We shall halt our tears until we reclaim Qadian.”

(Al Fazl, 5 June 1949)

functioned according to the material law of nature, began to fall weak.” In other words, the body has certain physical needs, such as comfort and the need of nourishment.

However, since the siege had prolonged, therefore they had to endure extremely difficult circumstances and could neither get proper rest, nor proper food and were consequently losing their strength.

This impact on their bodies was owing to the natural laws. “Thus, when the Holy Prophetsa witnessed this state of affairs, he called upon the two chieftains of the Ansar, Saadra bin Muadh and Saadra bin Ubadah and recalling to them all of the circumstances at hand sought their counsel” in light of the conditions of the Muslims.

“The Holy Prophetsa even proposed, ‘If you are in agreement, it is also possible that we may give the Ghatan tribe a portion of our wealth, so that this war may be averted.’

Saadra bin Muadh and Saadra bin Ubadah resonated the same words, and submitted, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! If you have received divine revelation in this respect, then we submit to you in obedience. In this case, most definitely, let us act upon this proposition gladly.’ The Holy Prophetsa said, ‘Nay, nay, I have not received any revelation in this matter. I only present this suggestion out of my consideration for the hardship you are being made to bear.’ The two Saads responded, ‘Then our suggestion is that if we have never given anything to an enemy while we were idolaters, why then should we do so as Muslims?” i.e. they will continue to follow the rules that were a custom of the time. “By God! We shall give them nothing but the strikes of our swords.’

“The Holy Prophetsa was worried on account of the Ansar, who were the native

residents of Medina” and so the Holy Prophetsa was particularly concerned about them in regard to the prolonged siege, whether they had any reservations or were in discomfort from it. “Furthermore, in seeking this counsel, the only intent of the Holy Prophetsa was to perhaps gather insight into the mental state of the Ansar, as to whether they were worried about these hardships or not, and if they were, then to console them. Thus, when this proposal was put forth, the Holy Prophetsa happily accepted and war continued.” (Sirat Khatamun-Nabiyyin, Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra, pp. 589-590) In reference to the Banu Quraizah and their treacherous actions during the Battle of Khandaq, Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmad Sahibra has written in Sirat KhatamunNabiyyin: “In addition to this, another tactic which Abu Sufyan employed was that he instructed Huyayy bin Akhtab, the Jewish chief of Banu Nadir, to go to the fortresses of Banu Quraizah in the veils of the darkness of night and attempt to bring over the Banu Quraizah with the aid of their chief, Kaab bin Asad. Therefore, Huyayy bin Akhtab found an opportunity and arrived at the home of Kaab. Initially, Kaab refused and said that ‘We have settled a covenant and agreement with Muhammadsa, and he has always loyally fulfilled his covenants and agreements, therefore, I cannot act treacherously towards him.’

“However, Huyayy painted a picture of lush green gardens to him and gave him such confidence in the imminent destruction of Islam; and presented their own resolve with such force and emphasis that they would not return from Medina

until they had obliterated Islam, that ultimately, he agreed. In this manner, the strength of the Banu Quraizah also added to the weight on a scale which was already heavily weighed to one side (i.e., they were already strong materially). When the Holy Prophetsa received news of this dangerous treachery of the Banu Quraizah, initially, the Holy Prophetsa dispatched Zubairra bin Al-Awwam to obtain intelligence in secret two or three times. Then, after this, the Holy Prophetsa formally sent Saadra bin Muadh and Saadra bin Ubadah, who were chieftains of the Aus and Khazraj tribes along with a few other influential Companions in the form of a delegation towards the Banu Quraizah, and strictly instructed that if there was troubling news, it should not be publicly disclosed when they returned, rather, secrecy should be maintained so that people were not made apprehensive.

When these people reached the dwellings of Banu Quraizah and approached Kaab bin Asad, this evil man confronted them in a very arrogant manner. When the two Saads spoke of the treaty, Kaab and the people of his tribe turned wicked and said, ‘Be gone!

There is no treaty between Muhammadsa and us.’ Upon hearing these words, this delegation of Companions set off. Saadra bin Muadh and Saadra bin Ubadah then presented themselves before the Holy Prophetsa and informed him of the state of affairs in an appropriate manner.” (Sirat Khatamun-Nabiyyin, Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra, pp. 584-585) And so, their punishment, or the fight against them continued. During the Battle of Banu Quraizah, Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah loaded dates upon several camels to send as food for the Holy Prophetsa and

18 the Muslims. On that occasion, the Holy Prophetsa stated, “What an excellent form of nourishment the date is!” (Subul al-Hudaa Wa al-Rashaad, Vol. 5, p. 6, Fi Ghazwah Bani Quraizah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1993) During the Battle of Mu‘ta, which took place in Jamadi al-Ula 8 AH, Hazrat Zaidra was martyred, and the Holy Prophetsa went to his home to pay his condolences.

Thereupon, his daughter came to the Holy Prophetsa whilst weeping constantly, due to the agony and distress. As a result, the Holy Prophetsa also began to cry. Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah then asked, “What is the reason for this?”, to which the Holy Prophetsa replied: ْ ُ َ َ ٰ ٰ ‫ھذا ش ْوق الحَ ِب ْی ِب اِلی َح ِب ْی ِب ٖہ‬ “This is one’s affection towards his beloved”. (Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 34, Zaid Al-Hubb bin Harithah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) There is another narration from Sahih al-Bukhari – in fact, the previous narration was not from Sahih al-Bukhari – however, the following narration is from Bukhari and is relating to a different account.

Hisham bin Urwah relates from his father that when the Holy Prophetsa departed for the Conquest of Mecca, the Quraish had received news of this.

Consequently, Abu Sufyan bin Harb, Hakim bin Hizam and Budail bin Waraqah went out to seek information about the Holy Prophetsa until they reached a placed called Marruz Zahran. Marruz Zahran is a place 5 miles from Mecca, wherein are plentiful springs and gardens of dates. When they reached this place, they saw countless fires lit, just as there are at Arafat during the pilgrimage. Abu Sufyan then said, “What is this? It seems as though these are the fires of Arafat”. Budail bin Waraqah then said, “These seem to be the fires of Banu Amr, (i.e. of the Khuza’ah tribe).” Abu Sufyan said, “The Banu Amr tribe are much fewer in numbers.” Thereafter, some guards of the Holy Prophetsa saw them and seized the three of them. They were then brought to the Holy Prophetsa and Abu Sufyan accepted Islam. When the Holy Prophetsa left towards Mecca, he told Hazrat Abbasra, “Keep Abu Sufyan at the mountain-pass, so that he may see the Muslims.” Therefore, Hazrat Abbasra kept him there. Numerous tribes passed by, alongside the Holy Prophetsa, and each division of the army passed in front of Abu Sufyan. When one group was passing by, Abu Sufyan asked, “Abbas, who are these people?” Hazrat Abbasra replied, “These are the people of the Ghiffar tribe”, to which Abu Sufyan said, “I have no concern for the Ghiffar tribe.” Then the people of the Juhainah tribe passed by and Abu Sufyan posed the same question. Then the people of the Saad bin Huzaim tribe passed by and he asked the same question, then the people of the Sulaim tribe passed by and he asked the same question, up to the point where the last division of the army passed by, which he had not seen before. Abu Sufyan asked, “Who are these people?” Hazrat Abbasra said, “These are the Ansar and their chief is Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah, who is holding the flag. Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah exclaimed, “O Abu Sufyan, today is the day of a fierce battle, and in which fighting shall be permissible in the precinct of the Ka‘bah”.

Having heard this, Abu Sufyan then said, “Abbas, what a great day of destruction

this would be if I were to contest you” (i.e. if he was on the opposing side and had the opportunity to [to fight them], but he was on the side of the Muslims due to having accepted Islam). Then another division of the army arrived which was the smallest of all the battalions. Among them was the Holy Prophetsa and the Muhajireen and the flag of the Holy Prophetsa was being carried by Hazrat Zubairra bin Al-Awwam.

When the Holy Prophetsa passed by Abu Sufyan, he said, “Are you not aware of what Saadra bin Ubadah has just said?” The Holy Prophetsa asked, “What did he say?” He then told him whatever Hazrat Saad bin Ubadahra uttered. The Holy Prophetsa then replied, “Saad has erred, in fact, today is the day that God Almighty shall restore the honour of the Ka‘bah and it shall be covered with a sacred cloth [Ghilaf]. There shall be no fighting on this day.”(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab-ul-Maghazi, Bab Aina Rakaza anNabi ar-Ra’ya Yaumal Fath, Hadith 4280) (Mu’jamul Buldan, Vol. 4, p. 247) Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra has mentioned this incident in more detail and is as follows:“While the Muslims marched towards Mecca, the Holy Prophetsa had ordered Hazrat Abbasra to take Abu Sufyan and his friends to a spot from where they could easily view the Muslim army, and its loyalty and devotion. Hazrat Abbasra did so and from a vantage point Abu Sufyan and his friends watched the Arab tribes go past on whose power the Meccans had banked all these years for their plots against Islam.

(The people of Mecca thought that they will be able to receive help from them but now they were all stood in support alongside the Holy Prophetsa.) They marched that day not as soldiers of disbelief but as soldiers of belief. They raised now the slogans of Islam, not the slogans of their pagan days. They marched in formation, not to put an end to the Prophet’s life (as the Meccans desired), but rather to lay down their lives to save his; not to shed his blood, but their own for his sake. Their ambition that day was not to resist the Prophet’s message and save the superficial solidarity of their own people.

It was to carry to all parts of the world the very message they had so far resisted. It was to establish the unity and solidarity of man. Column after column marched past until the Ashja‘ tribe came in Abu Sufyan’s view. Their devotion to Islam and their selfsacrificing zeal could be seen in their faces, and heard in their songs and slogans. “‘Who are they?’ asked Abu Sufyan.

‘They are the Ashja‘ tribe’, replied Hazrat Abbasra.

“Abu Sufyan looked astonished and said, ‘In all Arabia, no one bore greater enmity to Muhammadsa than them.’

“Hazrat Abbasra replied, ‘We owe it to the grace of God. He changed the hearts of the enemy of Islam as soon as He deemed fit.’

“Last of all came the Holy Prophetsa, surrounded by the armies of Ansar and Muhajirin.

“They must have been about 2,000 strong, dressed in suits of armour. Hazrat Umarra directed their marching and would continuously tell them to be mindful of their steps so that the rows remained intact.

“The sight proved the most impressive of all. The devotion of these Muslims, their determination and their zeal seemed overflowing. When Abu Sufyan’s eyes fell

on them, he was completely overpowered.

‘Who are they?’ he asked. ‘They are the Ansar and the Muhajirin surrounding the Prophetsa,’ replied Abbasra. “‘No power on earth could resist this army,’ said Abu Sufyan, and then, addressing Hazrat Abbasra more specifically, ‘Abbas, your nephew has become the most powerful king in the world.’ “‘You are still far from the truth, Abu Sufyan. He is no king; he is a Prophet, a Messenger of God,’ replied Hazrat Abbasra.

‘Yes, yes, let it be as you say, a Prophet.’ added Abu Sufyan “As the Muslim army marched past Abu Sufyan, the commander of the Ansar, Saadra bin Ubadah happened to eye Abu Sufyan and could not resist saying that God that day had made it lawful for them to enter Mecca by force and that the Quraish would be humiliated.

“As the Holy Prophetsa was passing, Abu Sufyan raised his voice and addressing the Holy Prophetsa said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! Have you allowed the massacre of your own kith and kin? I heard the commander of the Ansar, Saad and his companions say so. They said it was a day of slaughter. The sacredness of Mecca will not avert bloodshed and the Quraish will be humiliated. Prophetsa of God, you are the best, the most forgiving, the most considerate of men. Will you not forgive and forget whatever was done by your own people?’

“Upon hearing this plea from Abu Sufyan, those very Muslims who used to be insulted and beaten in the streets of Mecca, who had been dispossessed and driven out of their homes, began to entertain feelings of mercy for their old persecutors. ‘O Prophet of God,’ they said, ‘the accounts which the Ansar have heard of the excesses and cruelties committed by Meccans against us, may lead them to seek revenge. We know not what they may do.’

“The Holy Prophetsa understood this.

Turning to Abu Sufyan, he said, ‘What Saad has said is incorrect. It is the day of forgiveness. The Quraish and the Ka‘bah will be honoured by God.’ “Then he sent for Saad and ordered him to hand over the Ansar flag to his son, Qais, for he would now be the commander of the Ansar’s army. In this way, it placated the Meccans and saved the Ansar’s disappointment. Qais, a pious young man, was fully trusted by the Holy Prophetsa.”

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra, in relation to Qais’ra level of piety, states:“An incident of his last days illustrates the piety of his character. Lying on his deathbed, Qais received his friends. Some came and some did not. He could not understand this and asked why some of his friends had not come to see him. ‘Your charity is abundant,’ explained one. (Qais was extremely generous and would help people). “‘You have been helping the needy by your loans. There are many in the town who are in debt to you. Some may have hesitated to come lest you should ask them for the return of the loans.’

“He replied, ‘Then I have been the cause of keeping my friends away. Please announce that no one now owes anything to Qais.’ After this announcement, Qais had so many visitors during his last days that the steps to his house gave way.”

(Dibacha Tafsir-ul-Quran, Anwar-ul-

Ulum, Vol. 20, pp. 341-343) Another name for the Battle of Hunayn is the Battle of Hawazin. Hunayn is the name of a valley 30 miles from Mecca and is situated between Mecca and Taif. The Battle of Hunayn took place after the Conquest of Mecca in Shawal 8 AH. The Holy Prophetsa distributed the spoils gained from this war among the Muhajireen. The Ansar felt this in their hearts. Regarding this, there is a detailed narration found in Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, which states:“Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudrira relates that when the Holy Prophetsa distributed the spoils among the Quraish and other Arab tribes, there was nothing left to give to the Ansar. They felt aggrieved at this and would speak amongst themselves regarding this, to the extent that someone even said that the Holy Prophetsa would soon return to his tribe and that he has forgotten the Ansar and only granted [the spoils of war] to the Muhajireen. Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah presented himself before the Holy Prophetsa and said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! The Ansar feel something in their hearts about this…’” i.e. with regard to the spoils of war that were distributed amongst the various Arab tribes and the Ansar did not receive anything therefrom.

“The Holy Prophetsa asked him, ‘O Saadra! With regard to this, which side are you on; clarify your position on the matter?’

He replied, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! I am merely an ordinary member of my tribe. I have no status or rank.’ The Holy Prophetsa said, ‘Gather your tribe in such and such area’ (i.e. he was instructed to gather his people in an open plain). Thus, Hazrat Saadra left and gathered the Ansar in the specified location. Some Muhajireen also joined them and Hazrat Saadra permitted them to come, but some other individuals wished to enter, however Hazrat Saadra stopped them from entering. When everyone had gathered together, Hazrat Saadra went to the Holy Prophetsa and informed him that the Ansar had all gathered together.”

The narrator further says:“The Holy Prophetsa came and after praising God Almighty, he said, ‘O ye Ansar, whatever is the matter? I am receiving reports that you are aggrieved at not receiving anything from the spoils of war. Before I came to you, were you not in a state of misguidance?

God Almighty bestowed guidance upon you. Were you not destitute before God Almighty granted you affluence? Were you not enemies of each other until the time God Almighty instilled love for one another in your hearts?’ They replied, ‘Indeed, for God and His Messengersa are greater and more benevolent.’ The Holy Prophetsa then said, ‘O ye Ansar! Why do you not answer the questions I presented before you?’ The Ansar replied, ‘O Messengersa of Allah!

How can we reply when all benevolence and blessings are from God Almighty and His Messengersa?’ The Holy Prophetsa then said, ‘By God! You could have said – and you would have been truthful in your statement if you had said – that I came to you when I had been rejected by all others and then you accepted me; and that all of my own people had abandoned me, but you all assisted me. I came to you since my people had abandoned me and then you granted me protection. Since you were a large tribe, I entered into an agreement with you.’ The Holy Prophetsa then stated, ‘O ye Ansar! Did you feel dismay over an

Friday 7 February 2020 | AL HAKAM insignificant piece of worldly wealth that I granted to others but not to you? I granted to them in order to comfort their hearts, so that they may accept Islam and so they can become firm in their faith, but I entrusted you with your faith in Islam. O ye Ansar!

Does it not please you that other people will return to their homes having acquired sheep, goats and camels, yet you will return home alongside the Messengersa of Allah?’

The Holy Prophetsa further said, ‘I swear by the One Who holds the life of Muhammad in His Mighty Hand! Were it not for the migration, I would have been one of the Ansar. If all the people choose one valley in which to pass by, and the Ansar choose another, I would always adopt the one chosen by the Ansar. O Allah! Have mercy on the Ansar, and upon the sons of the Ansar and also the grandsons of the Ansar.’”

The narrator then states: “Upon hearing this, all the Ansar that were present began to weep, to the extent that their beards became wet from their tears.

They then said that they were content with how the Messengersa of Allah distributed the spoils of war, i.e. they were happy, however the Holy Prophetsa had distributed the wealth and that the Holy Prophetsa was sufficient enough for them. The Holy Prophetsa then left and the people also dispersed.” (Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, Vol. 4, pp. 192-193, Musnad Abi Saeed alKhudri, Alamul Kutub, Beirut, 1998) (Atlas Sirat Nabwisa, pp. 408-409, Darul Islam, alRiyad 1424A.H.) (Al-Sirat al-Halabiyyah, Vol. 3, p. 163, 175, Bab Ghazwah al-Ta’if, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2002) On the occasion of Hajjatul Wida, the Holy Prophetsa travelled from Medina to perform the Hajj. When he arrived at the place of Hajj, his mount went missing.

The Holy Prophetsa and Hazrat Abu Bakrra used the same mount, which was in the care of the servant of Hazrat Abu Bakrra when it went missing. Hazrat Safwanra bin Muattal travelled behind the main caravan and managed to find the missing camel.

He brought the missing camel along with him, which still had the all the provisions loaded on top of it. When Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah heard of this incident, he came to the Holy Prophetsa along with his son, Qaisra, and also brought a camel loaded with provisions to take along on a journey.

When they met the Holy Prophetsa, he was standing beside the entrance to his home.

At that time, God Almighty had returned his camel to him, i.e. the camel that was lost and had been recovered by the time Saadra came to the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Saadra said, “O Messengersa of Allah! We have heard that your camel along with all your provisions has been misplaced. Please take our mount instead.” The Holy Prophetsa replied, “God Almighty has brought our mount back to us” i.e. he had found the mount that went missing. “Both of you can take back the mount you have brought; may God Almighty bless both of you.” (Subul al-Hudaa Wa al-Rashaad, Vol. 8, p. 460, Dhikr Nuzulihi bil Araj, Dar-ul-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut, 1993) (Kitabul Maghazi Lil Waqidi, p. 1093, Bab Hujjatul Wadaa, Alam al-Kutub, Beirut, 1984) Hazrat Usama bin Zaidra states: “One of the daughters of the Holy Prophetsa said to me that her son was on his deathbed and that the Holy Prophetsa should

come to see them. The Holy Prophetsa sent word back saying, ‘He belongs to Allah, Who bestows and can call him back at any moment. God Almighty has fixed a term for everything, therefore you ought to be steadfast and seek the pleasure of God Almighty.’ She then sent for the Holy Prophetsa again and this time swore by God for him to come to see them. The Holy Prophetsa stood up and at the time, Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah, Hazrat Muadhra bin Jabal, Hazrat Ubayra bin Kaab, Hazrat Zaidra bin Thabit and many other companions were seated around him. When the Holy Prophetsa went to see them, the child was brought before him and from the sound he was making, it became evident that he was breathing his last breaths.” Hazrat Usmanra stated (however I believe it was Hazrat Usamara who stated) that “the sound was like that of two old water skins rubbing against one another. Upon seeing the child in such condition, the Holy Prophetsa was moved to tears. Hazrat Saadra said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! What is this?’ to which the Holy Prophetsa replied, “This is owing to the mercy God Almighty has placed in the hearts of people, and God Almighty only bestows His mercy to those people who show mercy to others.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitabul Janaiz, Bab Qaul anNabi Yu’adhabul Mayyitu bi Buka Ahlihi…, Hadith 1284) This emotional state is not something out of the ordinary, it is simply due to the grace of Allah the Almighty.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umarra narrates: “When Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah fell ill, the Holy Prophetsa went to visit him along with Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Aufra, Hazrat Saad bin Abi Waqasra and Hazrat Abdullah bin Masoodra. When he arrived there, he saw Hazrat Saadra was surrounded by his family members. The Holy Prophetsa enquired if he had passed away? Since he saw his family members crowding around and he was suffering from a severe ailment. The family members replied, ‘No, O Messengersa of Allah! He is alive.’ Nonetheless, the Holy Prophetsa went close to him and upon seeing his condition, he began to cry. When the people saw the Holy Prophetsa in this state, they also began to cry. The Holy Prophetsa then said, ‘Hear my words! God Almighty never punishes for any tears that are shed, nor if the heart feels anguish, rather he will punish or show mercy owing to this,’ and the Holy Prophetsa pointed to his tongue. The Holy Prophetsa then said, ‘The deceased receives punishment if one’s family members lament and wail over a departed one.’” (Sahih alBukhari, Kitabul Jana’iz, Bab al-Bukaa ‘indal Mareed, Hadith 1304) It is incorrect to lament and wail.

Perhaps the condition of the Holy Prophetsa was brought about upon seeing Hazrat Saadra or that a special state descended upon the Holy Prophetsa for the acceptance of prayer and as a result of this, he became emotional. However, the other people thought that Hazrat Saad’sra end was near and hence, began to cry. The Holy Prophetsa explained to them that they ought to refrain from lamenting and wailing as it was a harmful deed for one to be displeased at the Decree of God Almighty.

Hence, if tears flow from the eyes in order to seek the pleasure of God Almighty,

they attract the mercy of God Almighty, but if it is owing to lamentation and wailing, then one incurs punishment for such an act.

In any case, Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah did not pass away during this intense period of illness.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umarra relates: “We were in the company of the Holy Prophetsa when someone from among the Ansar came to the Holy Prophetsa and offered his greeting of Salam. As he turned away to go back, the Holy Prophetsa enquired, ‘O our brother from the Ansar!

How is the health of my brother Saadra bin Ubadah?’ He replied that he was better now.

The Holy Prophetsa then asked who among us would go to visit him. We all stood up to accompany the Holy Prophetsa and we were more than ten people. At the time, we were neither wearing any shoes nor any cap on our heads, or even our upper garments.

In other words, we all quickly set off with the Holy Prophetsa and we continued to walk until we reached Saadra bin Ubadah.

People had gathered around him and they all moved aside and the Holy Prophetsa and his companions stood near him.”

This narration is from Sahih Muslim and is relating the same incident which was mentioned earlier. (Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Jana’iz, Bab fi Iyaadatil Mardaa, Hadith 2138) Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah bin Amr bin Haramra relates, “My father once instructed me to prepare some Harira and I did so.”

Harira is a famous dish which is prepared from flour, butter and water. However, according to the lexicon of Hadith, Harira is prepared from flour and milk. In any case, he relates:“Upon my father’s instruction I took the Harira and presented it before the Holy Prophetsa. The Holy Prophetsa was in his residence at the time and asked, ‘O Jabir, is this meat?’ I submitted, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, no, it is Harira. I prepared this upon the instructions of my father, who then told me to present this before you, and so I have come.’ After this, I returned to my father and he asked whether I saw the Holy Prophetsa. I replied that I did and my father then enquired whether the Holy Prophetsa said anything to me. I told my father that the Holy Prophetsa asked me whether it was meat that I had brought. Upon hearing this, my father thought that perhaps the Holy Prophetsa desired to eat meat and so slaughtered a goat and then cooked its meat and told me to take it and present it before the Holy Prophetsa.”

Hazrat Jabirra continues to relate:“I presented the goat meat before the Holy Prophetsa and the Holy Prophetsa stated, ‘O Allah! Grant reward to the Ansar from me, particularly Abdullahra bin Amr bin Haram and Saadra bin Ubadah.’” (Al-Mustadrak Ala Al-Sahihain, Vol. 5, pp. 39-40, Kitabul At’imah, Dar-ul-Fikr, Beirut, 2001) (Fathul-Bari, Kitabul At‘imah Vol. 9, p. 678, Qadimi Kutub Khana, Karachi) (Jahangeer Urdu Lughat, p. 649, Jahangeer Books, Lahore) (Lexicon, part 2 p. 539 London 1865) Hazrat Abu Usaidra relates that the Holy Prophetsa once stated that the best households among the Ansar were from the tribes of the Banu Najjar, Banu Abd Ash‘al, Banu Harith bin Khazraj and then Banu Saidah and that every house of the Ansar was full of goodness. (This tradition

is from Sahih al-Bukhari). Upon hearing this, Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah, who was from among the prominent Companionsra in Islam, stated that it seemed as if the Holy Prophetsa held the other households of the other tribes superior to them. However, he was told that the Holy Prophetsa had also established his rank higher than many other people.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab Manaqib al-Ansar, Bab Manqabah Saad bin Ubadah, Hadith 3807) Hazrat Abu Usaidra testified that the Holy Prophetsa stated that the best households among the Ansar were the Banu Najjar, Banu Abd Ahsh‘al, Banu Harith bin Khazraj and then Banu Saidah and that every house of the Ansar was filled with goodness. The narrator of this tradition, Abu Salma, states that Hazrat Abu Usaidra stated, “I am accused of fabricating this tradition, however if that was the case, then I would have mentioned the name of my tribe first, i.e. the Banu Saidah.”

When Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah heard this, he also felt this in his heart. (In the previous narration it also mentioned that he expressed that the Holy Prophetsa had listed them last among the four.) And so, he asked for the saddle to be fastened on his donkey and so he could present himself before the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah’s nephew, Sahl, said to him, “Are you going to the Holy Prophetsa to challenge the statement of his and enquire about the order [of the tribes] the Holy Prophetsa mentioned, when the truth is that that the Holy Prophetsa knows better?

Is it not sufficient enough for you that you are also one of the four?” And so, Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah abandoned his plan and stated that Allah and His Messengersa know better. He then instructed his saddle to be loosened from the donkey. This narration is also from Sahih Muslim. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab Fada‘il al-Ansar, Bab fi Khair Daur alAnsar, Hadith 6425) Hisham bin Urwah relates from his father that Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah used to offer the following supplication: “O Allah! Make me worthy of praise, grant me honour and nobility. One cannot attain honour and nobility without pious deeds.” If one does not have good deeds, they cannot attain honour, nor nobility.

“And good deeds cannot be attained without wealth, therefore, O Allah, little amount of wealth is not sufficient for me and nor will it allow me to remain in this state.”

(Al-Tabaqaat-ul-Kubra li ibn Saad, Vol. 3, p. 461, Saad bin Ubadah, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 1990) In any case, this was his own unique manner of supplicating before Allah the Almighty.

In another narration from Sahih Muslim, Abu Hurairahra states that Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah asked the Holy Prophetsa, “If I see someone with my wife, should I not do anything to him until I find four witnesses who actually saw them committing the ill deed?” The Holy Prophetsa replied, “Yes”.

Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah submitted, “Certainly not, I swear by Him, Who has sent you with the truth that if this happened to me, I would immediately settle the matter with my sword” i.e. I would not search for a witness but would instead kill him. Upon this, the Holy Prophetsa said to the people [present], “Listen to what your leader is

20 saying? [i.e. referring to Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah]. He is filled with honour, but I possess even greater sense of honour than him and Allah the Almighty has even greater honour.” (Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Li‘an, Hadith 3763) Then, in relation to this account, there is another hadith from Sahih Muslim.

Hazrat Mughairara bin Sha‘ba relates that Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah stated, “If I were to find anyone with my wife, I would kill them immediately. I would not kill him with the lower end of the blade but from the sharpened edge of the sword.” When the Holy Prophetsa heard this, he stated, “Are you amazed at the level of honour Saad has? By God, I possess a greater sense of honour than him and God Almighty possesses an even greater honour. It is in fact owing to God’s great honour that He has forbidden immoralities and acts of indecency, whether committed in secret or openly. There is no one who possesses a greater sense of honour than God Almighty and there is no one who is more pleased than God in accepting repentance.” In other words, no one possesses a greater

sense of honour than God Almighty and nor is anyone more pleased than Allah the Almighty in accepting repentance. The Holy Prophetsa further stated, “It is for this reason that God Almighty has declared His prophets as bearers of glad-tidings and as a warner.” They give glad-tidings and warn people as well. “Moreover, there is no one who appreciates praise more than Allah the Almighty, it is for this reason that Allah the Almighty has promised heaven as a reward.”

(Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Li‘an, Hadith 3764) To abstain from sins is in fact to praise God Almighty and it is for this reason that God Almighty has granted the promise of heaven. Thus, even though Allah the Almighty punishes but He does not do so immediately, however man may display haste in his meting out punishment, owing to his sense of honour. Allah the Almighty forgives one who seeks repentance and also rewards them. Thus, God Almighty not only forgives but then also rewards as well.

Hence, the Holy Prophetsa stated that one should not exceed in their actions beyond the commandments of Allah the Almighty.

There is a tradition in the hadith from Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal in which it states that Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah relates that the Holy Prophetsa appointed him to supervise the funds of Sadaqat [charity] belonging to a particular tribe. The Holy Prophetsa advised him [to always fear Allah the Almighty] lest on the Day of Judgment, he appeared in a state laden with a camel which was bleating. Hazrat Saadra replied, “O Prophetsa of Allah, then entrust this responsibility to someone else.” And so, the Holy Prophetsa did not assign this duty to him.

(Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, Vol. 7, p. 473, Musnad Saad bin Ubadah, Hadith 22828, Alamul Kutub, Beirut, 1998) Thus, one who is entrusted with the supervision of something has to ensure that they grant the due rights to everyone, establish justice and not display even a hint of dishonesty. Failing to do this is a grave sin and one will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment.

During the lifetime of the Holy Prophetsa, six companions collated the entire Holy Quran into a single volume and

Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah was one of them.

(Usdul Ghabah, Vol. 1, p. 503, Jariyah bin Majma’, Dar-ul-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut, 2003) Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra, in regard to this, states that among the Ansar, the following names are of the well-known Huffaz [those who had committed the Holy Quran to memory]: Ubadah bin Samit, Muadh, Mujamma bin Haritha, Fuzala bin Ubaid, Maslama bin Mukhallad, Abu Darda, Abu Zaid, Zaid bin Thabit, Ubbay bin Kaab and Saad bin Ubadah, Umm-e-Waraqah.

It is proven from historical sources that there were many Companionsra who had memorised the Holy Quran. (Dibacha Tafsir-ul-Quran, Anwarul Ulum, Vol. 20, p.

430) There are a few accounts that remain of Hazrat Saadra bin Ubadah which I will Insha-Allah relate in the future sermons.
