How Jalsa Salana fulfils Divine promises

Every event unfolds by Allah’s decree

“Enlarge your abode.” (Tadhkirah [English], p. 382)

From a small hamlet in British-Indian Punjab, Hazrat Ahmadas claimed to be the Messiah of our time. His followers

were few, and the eruption of backlash further turned friends into foes. With such fierce opposition, one would ask how the Messiah would even establish a following or community.

Against this backdrop, glad tidings began to descend from Allah the Almighty and Hazrat Ahmadas was told that his message would reach the corners of the

All praise belongs to Allah

“All the praises observable in the universe and within myriad creations are, in essence, expressions of God’s praise, reverting back to Him. This is because the qualities inherent in creation are indeed reflections of its Creator’s attributes. To elucidate, it is not the sun that lights up the world; rather, it is solely God’s doing. The moon does not dispel the darkness of the night; it is unequivocally God’s act. Similarly, it is not the clouds that bestow rain but God Himself. Likewise, our eyesight is a gift from God, our auditory senses are blessings from Him, and the discoveries of our intellect truly emanate from Him. Moreover, the enchanting characteristics displayed by the celestial and terrestrial entities – the evident splendour and vibrancy – are all testimony to the attributes of the Creator, Who fashioned them with His perfect excellence. He did not merely create and abandon them; He infused them with enduring mercy, upon which their existence and sustainability depend. Furthermore, He did not limit His act of creation to this; He elevated everything to its utmost potential, highlighting its inherent value. Consequently, in truth, He alone is the ultimate Benefactor and Bestower, embodying every conceivable quality. This notion is encapsulated in the verse:

یملعلا بر ہللدمﺤلا [All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of all worlds].” (Al Hakam, 24 June 1904, p. 15)

earth. Consequently, Allah directed Hazrat Ahmadas to prepare for a vast multitude of people, at a time when his followers could be counted within the small vicinity of Qadian.

In 1897, the Promised Messiahas received the following revelation:

“Enlarge your abode. People will come to you from very distant lands.” (Tadhkirah [English], p. 382)

At the time, funds were extremely scarce in the Community, so much so that Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra MA writes:

“When the Promised Messiahas received the revelation of ‘enlarge your abode’, he said to [Mian Abdullah Sanori] that though we do not have enough money to build any houses, we can comply with this divine instruction by making two or three makeshift wooden huts.” (Seeratul Mahdi, Vol. 1, p. 131)

As a result, “Huzooras had three wooden huts prepared in his house, which remained intact for three years, after which they wore down.” (Ibid.)

These three wooden huts were the humble beginnings of the expansion of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. When we take a look at the first bait in Ludhiana at the house of Sufi Ahmad Jaan, there were only 40 people in attendance. Similarly, the first Jalsa saw a total turnout of 75. But, alongside these revelations, Allah the Almighty had also promised to aid the Promised Messiahas and his Community –these divine promises were destined to be fulfilled.

From here, the Community began to multiply. Allah continued to bless Jamaate-Ahmadiyya abundantly, and the above revelation (and scores of others) manifested themselves at every step.

Today, all Ahmadi Muslims across the world are witnesses of the grand prophecy that people will come to the door of the Promised Messiahas in huge crowds – Jalsa Salana is a prime example.

Jalsa Salana UK continues to expand every year, and in direct fulfilment of the revelation “enlarge your abode”, there are now five main sites that host the guests of the Promised Messiahas: Fazl Mosque, Islamabad, Baitul Futuh Mosque, Jamia Ahmadiyya UK and Hadeeqatul Mahdi (this is not counting the many guesthouses the Jamaat has).

Fazl Mosque

Fazl Mosque was inaugurated in 1926. The women of the Community came forward and donated generously for this project, and the mosque was financed entirely using their donations. (“Fazl Mosque (The London Mosque)”,  www.ahmadipedia.org) The first Jalsa Salana in the UK was held here in 1964, and at the time, accommodation proved to be a challenge. Former Imam of the Fazl Mosque, Bashir Ahmad Rafiq Sahib, writes:

“Accommodation for members who were to visit London for the convention proved to be a complicated problem.” (“The first Jalsa Salana UK, 1964”,  Al Hakam, 30 July 2021, Issue 176, p. 20)

He explained how this was resolved: “Members of the London Jamaat, displaying a spirit of selflessness and sacrifice, accommodated visitors in their houses. Mostly they set apart their sitting rooms to lodge the guests.” (Ibid.)

Today, by the grace of Allah, accommodation is no longer an issue, with the Fazl Mosque being one of the five main hubs where guests of the Promised Messiahas from all over the world come and stay.

people were in attendance at the first convention, it becomes clear as day that the divine promises of Allah the Almighty given to the Promised Messiahas are continuing to be manifested to this day, and will continue to do so, insha-Allah

This is one of the most populated sites each year. The multi-purpose halls transform into guest houses, welcoming crowds of the Promised Messiah’s very own guests.

Jamia Ahmadiyya UK

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Promised Messiahas established Madrasa-eAhmadiyya in Qadian after the demise of two great scholars of the Jamaat. This later turned into Jamia Ahmadiyya. Uncertain periods of time were faced in the early years, including having to relocate to the likes of mud huts and stables.

This is very reminiscent of the wooden huts prepared by the Promised Messiahas in his own house for his guests. The UKbased campus was established in 2005 in London after which in 2012, a new premises in Haslemere, Surrey, was acquired and inaugurated by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa

In 1984, an approximately 25-acre site of an old boarding school in Tilford was bought through auction by the Jamaat, and the site was named “Islamabad” by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IVrh

This is where the Jalsa Salana was held for a large number of years before moving to Hadeeqatul Mahdi. In recent years, the Mubarak Mosque was built, and the site was converted into a state-of-the-art complex. Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa made the historic move from the Fazl Mosque to Islamabad in 2019 – making it the residence of Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya.

Every year, large numbers of guests are accommodated in Islamabad, from providing living arrangements to hot meals being served in the langar khana three times a day.

Baitul Futuh Mosque

Baitul Futuh Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Western Europe with a capacity of 16,000 worshippers. It was inaugurated in 2003 by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa, with over 600 guests in attendance, including high commissioners, members of parliament, councillors and representatives of 17 countries. (“Baitul Futuh Mosque”,  www. ahmadipedia.org)

If we compare this to the humble beginnings of the Jamaat, where just 75

Throughout the year, this is used as a seminary, housing all the future missionaries of the Community. During Jalsa, however, it transforms into a hotel-like facility for the guests. People travelling from the corners of the earth, for example, Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine, Ghana, Nigeria and many more countries stay in this location – a truly magnificent manifestation of “enlarge your abode, people will come to you from distant lands”.

Hadeeqatul Mahdi

Hadeeqatul Mahdi in Hampshire was 208acre farmland purchased in 2005 and is the home of Jalsa Salana UK as we see it today. Within a 28-day period, this farmland is transformed into a magnificent tent city which improves and grows every single year; from the sizes of marquees to the temporary infrastructure that caters for the thousands of guests, Hadeeqatul Mahdi shines as another magnificent proof of the Promised Messiah’sas truthfulness.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic’s restrictions on capacity and number, this year’s Jalsa will serve as another example of the grand prophecies given to the Promised Messiahas. We will witness again,  inshaAllah, how Allah will bring people from all corners of the earth to listen to the Khalifa of the Promised Messiahas and observe how Allah has enlarged his abode.

Serve, smile and sacrifice Huzoor grants key to a successful Jalsa Salana UK

London, 21 July: The Baitul Futuh Mosque is adorned with flags and decorations representing the various countries participating in Jalsa Salana UK 2023. The atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation as Jalsa is on the horizon and the guests of the Promised Messiahas from around the world arrive to partake in this auspicious event.

Earlier today at 12:28 BST, Hazrat Amirul Momineen, Khalifatul Masih Vaa, arrived at Baitul Futuh Mosque to deliver the Friday Sermon and lead the Jumua prayers.

Towards the end of his Friday Sermon, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said that Jalsa Salana would be starting next week. Huzooraa said that this year,  insha-Allah, after a period of 3-4 years, a large number of guests will be coming from abroad. Huzooraa prayed that Allah may allow them all to travel safely to the Jalsa and enable them to attain the true blessings of the Jalsa Salana.

Huzooraa said that all attendees should keep in mind that the main reason for which they are attending the Jalsa is to attain spiritual nourishment.

Addressing the volunteers, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said they should try their best to serve everyone in the best manner, keeping in mind that the attendees

are the guests of the Promised Messiahas Huzooraa said that this year, guests are expected to arrive in larger numbers. Hence, there may be some shortcomings – though the UK Jamaat’s organisation of Jalsa is now very capable and has addressed most of the issues.

Huzooraa said, Islam places much emphasis on the good treatment of guests, especially if they are coming for a religious purpose, and on the calling of the Promised Messiahas. Therefore, all workers should treat them well and with a spirit of sacrifice, seeking the pleasure of Allah.

Addressing the Islamic teachings regarding the treatment of guests, Huzooraa said that on one occasion the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa stated that he who believes in Allah and the Day of Judgement should treat their guests well and with respect. Huzooraa said guests from a wide range of backgrounds and temperaments attend the Jalsa, and at times, due to their nature, a guest may speak or act in a way that is hurtful or difficult for the worker, but Allah and the Holy Prophetsa have commanded us that in any case, we must treat the guests well because through this one’s faith will be judged.

Huzooraa emphasised that Jalsa volunteers should always be smiling and

remain joyful while also displaying good conduct and morals. Those who are serving have volunteered themselves happily for this service, so they should aspire to attain what Allah and the Holy Prophetsa expect of us. Huzooraa said that the Holy Prophetsa taught that smiling to your Muslim brother is charity; commanding good and forbidding evil is charity; giving directions to a man lost in the land or one with bad sight is charity; and removing a rock, thorn, or bone from the road is charity. Pouring what remains from your bucket into the bucket of your brother is charity. (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-birri wa s-silah ‘an rasulillahsa, Hadith 1956)

Huzooraa said that it is a great attribute to always keep smiling. At times, due to long shifts at Jalsa, one may have had very little sleep and be tired, but the commandment is that even in such circumstances, one should remain smiling and serve with true happiness.

Addressing the  tarbiyat department in particular and all workers in general, Huzooraa said that if they see something wrong that is against our teaching, they should intervene, explain, and teach with kindness and correct the matter.

Then Huzooraa pointed out that although a team is present to show people their way

around the site and where to go, and sign boards will also be dotted around, even if someone is to ask anyone for the way, we all must help each other as this is good manners. Even if one doesn’t know, they should guide them to someone who can help them. Huzooraa said that it is common knowledge that we should particularly help all disabled and blind people.

Huzooraa said if anyone leaves behind any rubbish – although there is a hygiene team in place – everyone should throw it away if they see it. If the food ever runs low, those working in the  Langar department should tell everyone with kindness to share the food and eat together.

Huzooraa said that disagreements can happen with regard to traffic arrangements, but everyone should work together amicably.

Emphasising the importance of remaining joyful and smiling in all situations, Huzooraa said that all other departments of Jalsa should always work together and follow this teaching of the Holy Prophetsa to always remain smiling.

In the end, Huzooraa prayed that Allah may enable all the workers to fulfil their duties in the best way and may He bless this Jalsa; moreover, every Ahmadi should pray for the success of the Jalsa.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V Inspects Jalsa UK site & inaugurates duties

Hadeeqatul Mahdi, 23 July 2023: With less than a week left until Jalsa Salana UK 2023, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa inspected the Jalsa Salana sites. At approximately 8pm BST, Huzooraa arrived at Hadeeqatul Mahdi’s main Jalsa marquee for his address to the Jalsa volunteers.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa called Rizwan Butt Sahib to recite a portion of the Holy Quran, Surah ar-Rum, Ch.30: V.47-49. The Urdu translation was read out by Sa‘id Houmadi Yaqub Sahib. After Yaqub Sahib finished, Huzooraa informed everyone that Yaqub Sahib is a student of Jamia Ahmadiyya UK and is from Mayotte Island. When he came to Jamia, he could not read or write Urdu, nor speak English fluently. However, now, by Allah’s grace, he could fluently read the translation in Urdu. He said that Allah the Almighty has granted the Jamaat such people, who, despite Urdu not being their mother tongue, are able to read and understand the writings of the Promised Messiahas in their original form.

Huzooraa then delivered a brief address in which he said that, insha-Allah next week the Jalsa Salana would start and it was the grace of Allah that the volunteers knew their duties and roles to a high standard and were training the children as well, who were learning eagerly.

Huzooraa said that everyone should keep smiling and remain joyful while carrying out their respective duties. Furthermore, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa said that throughout their duties, all members should remain occupied in prayers and  zikr-eilahi (remembrance of Allah).

Before silent prayer, Huzooraa prayed that may Allah enable all the duty workers to serve to the best of their abilities.

<< Continued from page 3

After delivering the Friday Sermon and leading the Jumua prayer, Huzooraa departed at around 14:15 BST.

Thereafter,  Al Hakam had the opportunity to speak with Amir Jamaat UK, Rafiq Hayat Sahib, and Nasir Khan Sahib, Afsar Jalsa Salana UK.

Amir Sahib informed us that for this year’s Jalsa Salana, it is expected that approximately 50,000 guests will attend. He also mentioned that, following last year’s UK Jalsa, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih

Vaa had instructed the installation of a water drainage system at the Jalsa site. This step was taken to prevent waterlogging, which had previously caused significant disruption for vehicles. Upon Huzoor’saa instructions, the drainage system has been implemented, ensuring the water properly drains downward. Furthermore, Amir Sahib shared that the newly-constructed Baitul Futuh Complex has been fully completed and is now being used to accommodate the guests attending the Jalsa. Additionally, Baitul Ehsan Mosque is also being used to accommodate the guests.

We also spoke with Nasir Khan Sahib, Afsar Jalsa Salana, who reiterated to us that Huzooraa has given a significant message to the Jalsa volunteers in his Friday Sermon. He said, this message will be relayed to all workers promptly. There are plans to augment the number of individuals for car park duties and guest reception. Additionally, signage at Jalsa Salana will be increased for clarity, and a concerted effort will be made to maintain cleanliness across the venue. Preparations are also in place to ensure adequate food provisions. In essence, every effort is being made to adhere to and

implement beloved Huzoor’saa directives.

Insha-Allah, Al Hakam will be reporting on the main inspection event scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Jalsa Salana What makes it unique?

M Adam Ahmad Al Hakam

Jalsa Salana, the annual convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, carries a great deal of significance for millions of Ahmadi Muslims around the world as it is held in continuation of over a centuryold tradition of the Jamaat’s Holy Founder, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas of Qadian, the Promised Messiah.

Initiation of Jalsa Salana by the Promised Messiahas

One of the unique aspects of Jalsa Salana is its remarkable foundation in 1891 by Prophet Ahmadas, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, whose arrival was eagerly awaited by believers of diverse faiths. Highlighting Jalsa Salana’s importance in its initial years, the Promised Messiahas said:

“Do not consider this Jalsa to be equivalent to any ordinary worldly gathering. The fact of the matter is that it is founded upon the pure support of truth and the propagation of Islam. The foundation stone of this Jamaat has been laid by Allah the Almighty Himself, and nations have been readied that will soon come to join its fold. This is due to the fact that it is the work of the All-Powerful God, for Whom, nothing is impossible.” (Majmuae-Ishtiharat [2019], Vol. 1, p. 361)

Presence of Prophet Ahmadas in its initial gatherings

Another uniqueness of Jalsa Salana which sets it apart from any other event is the holy presence of the Promised Messiahas in its early gatherings. Prophet Ahmadas graced his followers with his company, and his lectures had an enduring effect on their hearts. The Promised Messiahas said, “The key purpose of Jalsa Salana is to enable every devoted person to personally experience religious benefit, broaden their knowledge, and deepen their understanding of Allah the Almighty through His sheer grace and blessings.” (Ibid., p. 360)

The Promised Messiahas personally attended Jalsa Salana guests

In the early years, the guests of Jalsa Salana had the honour of being personally taken care of and served by the blessed hands of the Promised Messiahas. In spite of his highly busy schedule and extensive writing work, Prophet Ahmadas remained

approachable to his guests. The Promised Messiahas also established a Langar Khana (public kitchen) to fulfil the needs of and provide for his guests.

Consequently, the Messiahas of Muhammadsa warmly welcoming and attending to his visitors is also a distinctive aspect of early Jalsa gatherings. (See Zikr-eHabib: Hospitality of the Promised Messiah, Al Hakam, 21 July 2023, Vol. 6, Issue 279)

The Promised Messiah’sas wife, Hazrat Nusrat Jehan Begum Sahiba, commonly known as Amma Janra, also played an exceptional part in helping and assisting her husband by all possible means during the initial years of Jalsa Salana. Her dedication and devotion to serving the guests of Jalsa Salana were beyond comparison. Hazrat Amma Janra not only actively participated in the efforts to show hospitality to the visitors by preparing food in her kitchen, etc., but also manifested her great selflessness by presenting her own jewellery to provide for the arrangements of Jalsa Salana (Al Fazl International, 22 March 2019, p. 45).

This is also a prominent aspect of the initial Jalsa years when the blessed wife of

Prophet Ahmadas worked alongside him in serving and looking after the guests.

God’s blessings upon the institution of Jalsa Salana

At one point in his life, the Promised Messiahas had to eat the leftovers that his brother’s wife would give him (Al Fazl, 9 February 1960, p. 3). Then came the time when he was Divinely commissioned, and God showered His blessings upon Prophet Ahmadas. In the later years, the world witnessed those bounties, especially in the days of Jalsa Salana. Summing up the above-mentioned series of developments, the Promised Messiahas said:

The picture drawn in the aforesaid Arabic couplet is vividly observed in the days of Jalsa Salana. So, it is another peculiar feature of Jalsa Salana that God Almighty Himself helped to feed the masses who would come to Qadian, as given the financial state of the Promised Messiahas, it was impossible to look after the guests without divine succour.

Presence of Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa

After the passing of Prophet Ahmadas, the Jalsa Salana is being held under the guidance and leadership of his successors. The blessed presence of the caliphs of the Promised Messiahas is also one of the distinguishing characteristics of Jalsa Salana, setting it apart from any other gathering across the globe.

“There was a time when leftovers from other people’s dinner tables were my food, but today, by the grace of Allah the Almighty, countless families are eating at my table.” (Aina-e-Kamalat-e-Islam, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 5, p. 596)

In this era, the fifth Khalifa and the current head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, may Allah be his helper, blesses the guests of Jalsa Salana with his holy personage and grants them spiritual and moral guidance. The personal presence of God’s elect uplifts

the whole atmosphere of Jalsa Salana and adds a unique beauty to it. Consequently, the guests are literally able to experience the Promised Messiah’sas mission being carried on under the personal command and directions of his Khalifa.

Regardless of his excessively occupied and exhausting schedule, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa keeps a close eye on the necessities and requirements of Jalsa Salana’s guests. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa makes sure that every single person who has come to attend the blessed gathering feels welcomed and deeply cared for. Huzooraa inspects the arrangements made by the various departments of Jalsa Salana. Before the commencement of Jalsa, Huzooraa gives detailed instructions regarding the preparations and points out those matters that need to be addressed, even if they are apparently trivial or insignificant in the eyes of others.

In a documentary regarding Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V’saa engagements during Jalsa Salana, his Private Secretary, Munir Javed Sahib, related:

“Huzooraa asks about the wellbeing of all the guests that come here [for Jalsa Salana]. Huzooraa takes care of their needs, with such consideration that wherever the guests are staying, he stays up to date with it and sends them things they need. If someone has had any issue, then medication or anything else required is arranged immediately. Time after time, Huzooraa asks if they need anything else and sends it to them. All of this is provided. When the time for their return journey arrives, Huzooraa blesses them with gifts. [...]

“Huzooraa keeps an eye out for everyone; he sends them things, takes care of them, and asks about them again and again. Huzooraa may be sitting in the office, but he is looking after all guests as he is always concerned about them. This is also his daily routine for the whole year. However, during the Jalsa days, when Huzoor’saa engagements increase immensely. To continue this routine [is near impossible]. An ordinary person would think, ‘Leave this to the workers, the duty holders, etc., as I cannot do it.’ No! For Huzooraa , they are his own guests, and for Huzooraa, it is his duty to take care of them and fulfil each

of their needs. Fulfilling their basic needs aside, gifts are not a basic necessity, but still, going beyond it – something they are probably not even anticipating – Huzooraa still blesses them with gifts. […]

“During the days of Jalsa, first Huzooraa inaugurates the duties and preparations for Jalsa. Normally, it is done a few days prior, on the Sunday before the Jalsa. On this day, the inauguration and inspection takes place, after which the duties begin. However, after the start of these duties, Huzooraa seems to be in jihad-mode [i.e., exerting utmost efforts in this regard], which remains till the end of Jalsa when the guests leave. During these days, where, on the one hand, Huzooraa is concerned for their facilities, he also worries that the guests are not troubled in any way, i.e., in accidents, or any other difficulties. When Huzooraa finds out that they had to leave at a certain time, [he asks] what time their flight was, whether they were taken to the airport on time, etc. Hence, Huzooraa is concerned with the smallest of details. To remember each and every one of them, and then to ask about them, is no ordinary matter. Many great leaders may not even think about such details. [Huzooraa even asks] where someone is staying, whether appropriate arrangements have been made for them, if they have transport, or whether preparations have been made or not. Huzooraa asks that they were supposed to come today, so has a car been sent for them or not?

“In addition to all of these considerations with the preparations, if Huzooraa receives information that there have been issues somewhere, i.e., the roti plant, or there was a weakness somewhere, as soon as Huzooraa has the opportunity, he goes there himself. When Huzooraa arrives there, he examines the situation, asks questions, and gives guidance to the duty holders.” (“A Day in the Life: Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa during the Jalsa Salana”, https://youtu.be/ kZ6eFmjjEUc)

Munir Javed Sahib further narrates:

“A few years ago [in the days of Jalsa], it began to rain, and a group of people were leaving in the evening, towards their guest houses, and there was heavy traffic due to the rain as people were getting onto

the buses. When Huzooraa found out, he himself went there in the rain and stood there until the people waiting for the buses did not depart on their return journeys. Huzooraa took time out, went to see, and remained standing there. It gives others confidence. Then, slogans were raised there. A spiritual atmosphere is created. Huzooraa had gone there for hospitality, to take care of the needs of the guests. [Huzooraa didn’t think] that, “Presently, they are in this difficulty, so I will remain in peace indoors.” No! Huzooraa stood with them in the rain. If they [the guests] were getting wet, so was beloved Huzooraa. Such scenes, aside from those in divine communities, cannot be witnessed elsewhere.” (Ibid.)

International bai‘at

A one-of-a-kind event of Jalsa Salana, which started in 1993, is the international bai‘at [initiation ceremony]. People from all backgrounds and diverse ethnicities join in to take part in the initiation ceremony. A lot of new converts, along with young and old members of the Jamaat, get together and take bai‘at at the hand of the Khalifa of Islam Ahmadiyyat.

This significant feature is also peculiar to Jalsa Salana, and no other gathering on earth has this distinction of having scores of people in every part of the world taking the oath of allegiance at the exact same moment and repeating every word of their Khalifa in unison.

Spirit of serving with humility

Another astounding and unique aspect of Jalsa Salana is the selfless dedication of its workers to serving the guests. Despite the highly educational and professional backgrounds of many of them, these individuals volunteer without any sense of superiority or entitlement in a variety of roles, such as cutting and serving food, and even washing toilets, etc.

Apart from Jalsa Salana, there is probably no other event in the world where engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc. carry out such seemingly trivial tasks and contribute with humility to the smooth running of every single department. They greet every visitor wholeheartedly and treat them with the highest regard, fostering an atmosphere of awe-inspiring unity and brotherhood.

After Jalsa Salana UK 2019, Hazrat Khaliafatul Masih Vaa presented the views of some non-Ahmadi or non-Muslim Jalsa guests in his Friday Sermon. Malay-Hoso Yaqoob Sahib, Vice President of the Muslim Community in Benin, who participated in that Jalsa, said:

“I have performed Hajj more than twenty times; however, I witnessed a far greater level of organisation by attending the Jalsa Salana of the Ahmadiyya Community. Never in my life have I ever witnessed such an atmosphere as I did at the Jalsa. I have previously attended many religious conferences and gatherings but never experienced an atmosphere like the Jalsa Salana. The level of organisation, from being received at the airport to being transported to the accommodation, was such that it felt like one was in the comfort of their own home. I met people from all sections of society at the Jalsa, including engineers, doctors, professors, and many other highly educated and intellectual

people, who all served us with great humility.” (Friday Sermon, 9 August 2019; Al Hakam, 6 September 2019, Vol. 2, Issue 77)

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa said that the volunteers of Jalsa Salana come from different walks of life and include CEOs, doctors, engineers, and other professionals, but they carry out duties that may be far removed from their day jobs. Some of them happily stand and attend to hundreds of huge pots of food cooking on fire, even teenagers do this work cheerfully. Groups of men and women clean toilets most selflessly; others drive the elderly and disabled in buggy carts from one point to another. Children serve drinking water in the heat while groups of men and women serve food to the guests. There is also a very important and extensive department of security. In short, each volunteer, whether or not he is familiar with a particular task, carries it out with great passion and to the best of his ability. (Friday Sermon, 28 August 2015)

Engagement of youth

The active participation of youth in Jalsa Salana and their key roles in volunteer work, from parking to hospitality, shows their deep interest in this religious gathering. When one observes Ahmadiyya youth on Jalsa Salana in comparison to all the young people involved in pseudo-activism across the globe, one cannot help but admire their efforts and commitment to their faith. By the grace of Allah, our youth are engaged with their hearts and souls in serving humanity under the guidance of their spiritual leader,

A Police Commissioner by profession, Chester Williams Sahib from Belize, attended the Jalsa Salana UK 2019 and said:

“My knowledge of Islam has increased. Prior to attending the Jalsa, I perceived all Muslims to be the same; however, I have now realised that there are many sects within it. Ahmadis promote peace and invest a lot of time in the reformation of the youth, which indeed is most commendable.” (Al Hakam, 6 September 2019, Vol. 2, Issue 77)

The enthusiastic and healthy presence of youth in the Jalsa Salana performing significant voluntary works also sets it apart from any other gatherings.

Conclusion

In short, compared to any other secular gatherings around the world, Ahmadiyya Jalsa Salana is a truly one-of-a-kind convention. Its uniqueness lies in the blend of an uplifting spiritual atmosphere, unparalleled hospitality, and a message of grand unity. It stands out from other gatherings due to its emphasis on promoting tolerance, peace, and mutual harmony.

New PAAMA marquee at Jalsa 2023 Empowering the African Ahmadiyya Muslim diaspora

Tommy Kallon President of the PAAMA, UK

This year, by the grace of Allah the Almighty and the blessed approval of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa, the Pan-African Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (PAAMA) will, for the first time, have its own dedicated marquee at Jalsa Salana UK.

We are immensely grateful for this privilege as it will enable us to hold not only our annual Global PAAMA Forum, but also host a number of programmes and activities aimed at furthering the noble aims and objectives for which PAAMA was founded.

Particularly, the marquee will afford us the space to put up an Africa-centric exhibition that will showcase,  inter alia, the history of Islam and Islamic Empires in Africa, the visit of Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyyat to Africa, Quranic translations and other literature in various African languages, the expansion of PAAMA into now eight

chapters worldwide, and, of course, the memory, legacy and sacrifices of the martyrs of Burkina Faso.

The marquee serves as an amazing opportunity to take the Global PAAMA Forum to new heights. This is where Amirs and delegates from Africa and the Caribbean, and also PAAMA members from across North America, Europe and the UK come together and discuss ways in which the vision and mandate of PAAMA can be fulfilled. Now, by the grace of Allah, this can be held in our very own PAAMA marquee.

At Jalsa Salana, PAAMA traditionally plays the role of host to the delegates from Africa, the Caribbean and the global PAAMA family, as well as non-Ahmadi delegates and guests to Jalsa Salana.

PAAMA has had an intensely busy year with the reactivation of all our flagship and in-person events since the end of the

Covid-19 pandemic. Even throughout the pandemic, a plethora of virtual online events were held to keep the association engaged. Some of the major highlights of the year include a global Rishta Nata forum which was held virtually, the inauguration of PAAMA Netherlands, a PAAMA France residential weekend event, and a hugely successful Africa Day celebration event by our PAAMA UK Lajna.

PAAMA has as its Mission Statement:

To unite, inspire and empower the African Ahmadiyya Muslim Diaspora to serve Islam, society and Africa.

To the members of the global PAAMA family, this Mission Statement is no hollow strapline or credo of convenience. On the contrary, it is the guiding principle that instigates social, moral and spiritual

edification, which induces a measure of character into each and every one of us. This instils in us, as enjoined by our faith, love for and loyalty to our respective countries and nations, and inspires us to serve our beloved continent of Africa and all peoples of African provenance.

By the grace of Allah, the PAAMA marquee we are inaugurating this year is a direct result of Huzoor’saa directive for there to be a dedicated PAAMA marquee. As such, our hearts are overflowing with the deepest gratitude to our Beloved Spiritual Preceptor under whose celestial wing this humble PAAMA caravan continues its blessed and elevated quest to unite all peoples of African origin under the standard of Islam Ahmadiyyat. Our humble and earnest prayer is that we are able to fulfil our responsibilities in such a way that our beloved Khalifa, and hence Allah the Almighty, remains ever pleased with us. Amin

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visits Baitun Nur Mosque in Calgary

Kalim Ahmed Naib Local Amir, Jamaat Calgary, Canada

On 8 July 2023, the Baitun Nur Mosque in Calgary, Canada, welcomed the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau. The event was a traditional breakfast gathering as a part of the largest outdoor show on earth, called the “Calgary Stampede”. This “Stampede Breakfast” was co-hosted by Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya and local Member of Parliament George Chahal.

The Prime Minister arrived at the Baitun Nur Mosque at 9:45am and was warmly received by local Amir, Mir Majeed Ahmad Tariq Sahib, Secretary of Public Affairs Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Canada, Asif Khan Sahib, local Secretary of Public Affairs, Naeem Bashir Chaudhry Sahib, and my humble self. After entering the mosque, the Prime Minister was greeted by a group of Lajna Imaillah members, who introduced him to the centenary of Lajna Imaillah. He then had a tour of the mosque and visited an exhibition displaying translations of the Holy Quran in over 70 languages. He appreciated the efforts of Jamaat in spreading the peaceful message of Islam around the world. Inside the main prayer hall, the Prime Minister appreciated the beautiful interior and posed for a group photo. Subsequently, an informal meeting of the Prime Minister with the local Jamaat office bearers was held. He was given the message of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa about the dangerous trajectory of the war in Ukraine

and explained how Huzooraa is urging world leaders to strive to find mutually acceptable terms of agreement and make urgent efforts to find peace, lest the cycle of incessant violence rotate with ever greater fury. The Prime Minister remembered fondly his earlier meetings with Huzooraa. He was also briefed about the progress of the Jamaat and its contributions to Canadian society.

Afterwards, the Prime Minister addressed the public, who had gathered outside the mosque to see him. Addressing a large crowd of several thousand, including Federal Ministers, Members of Parliament, Mayors, Members of the Provincial Legislature, and a large number of mainstream media, he praised the efforts of Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya to promote peace and harmony in society. He expressed his gratitude to the Jamaat for hosting the event and said that it was an honour for him to speak to the larger local community. He said that your message of “Love for All, Hatred for None” is the message the world is in dire need of, and your efforts to reach across communities to spread hope and positivity were incredibly touching.

The co-host of the event, MP George Chahal, said in his address, “It’s important that we bring everybody together and make sure we all stand up against hatred and discrimination in all forms.”

Among other high-profile guests who attended the event were Minister of Defence Anita Anand, Minister of Industry FrançoisPhilippe Champagne, Minister of Tourism

National Tabligh Day observed in Canada

Syed Mukarram Nazeer Canada Correspondent

On 25 June 2023 Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Canada observed National Tabligh Day. Members went door-to-door to distribute “Explore Islam” flyers in remote towns across Canada.

The “Explore Islam” campaign was launched in Canada in December 2022 with the intent of visiting 1,000 towns and cities to educate and raise awareness among Canadians about the true teachings of Islam, its commonalities with other faiths, unique features, and how it leads to a life of peace, serenity, and fulfilment. The day began with members gathering in their local mosques or salat centres for Tahajjud prayer. Many pleasant conversations regarding the peaceful teachings of Islam took place, and, in some towns, people acknowledged that

they had heard of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Some people asked to be given extra flyers so that they could share them with friends and family as well.

Some comments are given below: While distributing flyers, Ibrahim Ahmed Sahib from Waterloo handed a flyer to a lady. After reading the flyer, she commented that she had prayed to God the day before that He should send someone who could explain to her the true path. She was invited to Jalsa Salana Canada. She is a foster parent with a son from Haiti. She is attracted to the belief in the Oneness of God and desires such a belief for all people. She expressed her appreciation for the Jamaat’s inclusivity and diversity. She was emotional throughout the conversation.

Mohammed Abdullah Sahib from Vaughan South met with John Blackman, Lead Pastor of Renaissance Baptist Church

in Brooklin, Ontario. Pastor Blackman was presented with some Jamaat literature and invited to the upcoming Jalsa Salana Canada. He showed great interest in interfaith dialogue and in organising an interfaith event at his church.

Waheed Anwer Sahib from Calgary met a person in Beiseker, who asked for a copy of the English translation of the Holy Quran and was very happy to see the Jamaat campaign. He said he had been looking for the Holy Quran everywhere but was unsure of which translation to read. His address was noted down, and a promise was made that he would be provided with an English translation of the Holy Quran.

On this day, 2,700 Jamaat members across Canada, participated in travelling to 132 different towns and distributing over 81,400 flyers.

got widespread publicity. Some TV channels televised the event live. The event garnered significant coverage in the print media. The breakfast attracted individuals from diverse walks of life and cultural backgrounds.

Tree-planting session held in Edmonton, Canada

Lajna Imaillah Edmonton, Canada, has started a tree-planting initiative, along with other chapters across Canada. The initiative not only serves as a way for us to contribute to the environment and prevent habitat loss, but it is also a form of sadaqah-e-jariah. One of the six tree species being planted is the Native Larch, which can live as long as 700 years.

The City of Edmonton has a programme called “Root for Trees”, with which the city aims to plant two million trees. Lajna Imaillah Edmonton West, participated in this programme to plant these trees, alhamdulillah

On 5 July 2023, we were able to plant 109 trees with the help of 19 Lajna members, nasirat, and children. The event also served as a good means for tabligh, as we were able to inform the two leaders from the city, who were guiding the session, about how tree planting connects to Islam.

Bring about a spiritual revolution Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’s address to Ahmadis in Rawalpindi, 1949

Ata-ul-Haye Nasir

Al Hakam

Jalsa Salana UK is commencing today. The convergence of multitudes of nationalities, ages, and backgrounds at Jalsa Salana, weaved as one body through the “rope of Allah” – Khilafat – to propagate the honour of Allah and gain His closeness, brings a unique sight to the Muslim ummah. The Promised Messiahas and his Khulafa have repeatedly emphasised that the purpose of Jalsa Salana is to bring about a spiritual revolution in one’s life, unlike any hollow worldly festival. Jalsa Salana seeks to forge the human condition towards the Islamic path of taqwa – righteousness.

Spiritual reformation is a subject that has been regularly emphasised by Khulafae-Ahmadiyyat. This article will narrate one such instance.

On 17 February 1949, Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud, Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmud Ahmadra, addressed Ahmadis in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

At the beginning of his speech, Huzoorra said that he wanted to call the Jamaat’s attention to their responsibilities in accordance with the changing circumstances:

“Since the responsibilities of the Jamaat are equally incumbent upon both men and women, I wanted the women to come here as well, so they could listen to my advice in relation to their duties, and if God Almighty enables them, they could mould their lives according to the prevailing circumstances.”

(Al Fazl, 13 September 1962, p. 2)

Huzoorra mentioned that due to the Partition of India, hundreds of thousands of people had migrated from the eastern Punjab to western Punjab, and some had even migrated from Kashmir and Jammu as well:

“Thus, the circumstances of the society have completely changed, and the people have mixed together in such a manner that the nature of their responsibilities [towards the society] has changed from what was in the past. Similarly, our Jamaat can also not remain unaffected by this unprecedented transformation.” (Ibid.)

Huzoorra mentioned that as a result of this mass migration, the number of Ahmadis in Rawalpindi Jamaat has also greatly increased, and thus, the members here are required to align themselves with the needs of the time:

“Hence, I call the attention of the Jamaat to organise themselves in a better way, increase in chandas [financial sacrifices],

enhance the level of their sacrifices, and most importantly, strengthen their relationship with God Almighty, in order to become the recipient of His help and succour. Always remember the fact that we do not possess the worldly means that are [considered essential for [material] progress. There is only one thing that can protect us, and that is to bow before Him [Allah] and seek help from Him alone. Allah the Almighty categorically declares in the Holy Quran:

“‘How many a small party has triumphed over a large party by Allah’s command.’ (Surah al-Baqarah, Ch. 2: V. 250)

“It means that there have been many jamaats in the past that overpowered the comparatively large parties, by the grace of Allah the Almighty. However, the fact is that these examples are only of those people

who connected themselves with Allah the Almighty, and eventually succeeded with His help and succour. [...] The people of Noahas attained victory despite being smaller in numbers. Moreover, we find in history that Davidas, Mosesas, and various other prophets – despite being in the minority – overpowered their opponents. The followers of the Holy Prophetsa became victorious despite being fewer in number. As far as worldly means were concerned, they did not have them. However, they had one spiritual power with them, and that was their connection with God Almighty. It was as if the world had divided into two parties: material and spiritual; from among those parties, [the Holy Prophet’ssa followers] had the spiritual power with them, whereas their opponents possessed all of the material strength. They had the support of God Almighty and His angels, however, material wealth and means were against them. In this contest, where one

party had earthly means but the other did not, the ultimate victor was the one who was in the minority and without any material means. On the other hand, the party that possessed a majority and was equipped with all earthly means had to face defeat.” (Al Fazl, 13 September 1962, p. 2)

Huzoorra continued:

“The opponents of the Holy Prophetsa had wealth, armies, government, means of war, experienced warriors, and the nation and country were in support, whereas he [the Holy Prophetsa] did not have any government or material means; however, he contested them and won, while the [disbelievers of] Arabia faced a defeat in this contest.

means, how many nations of the world have passed that were small in number but triumphed over their opponents? It only happened when Allah the Almighty was in support of them. In other words, the nations that are weak and less numerous,

either require the immense provision of material means or, if God Almighty is with them, they become victorious.

“It is apparent that we do not possess [worldly] power, thus, until we find a method that frees us from the need for [material] means, it is wrong to hope for success. If one does not possess the material means, there is only one method of achieving success; and that is to establish a relationship with God Almighty, and the connection should be such that you become His beloved. If we foster such a connection with Allah the Almighty, our [worldly] weakness and our being devoid of [material] means can never harm us. We can never be worried about seeing ourselves as fewer in number. Once such a connection is established, we can have certainty that we will be victorious over anyone who confronts us, since Allah the Almighty is with us. And the one who attains the Help of Allah the Almighty can never be overpowered by anyone.” (Ibid., p. 3)

Huzoorra further said:

“We are required to inculcate in our hearts the love of Allah the Almighty and to pledge that we will live and die in this world for the sake of God Almighty alone. We will be able to attain the nearness of Allah the Almighty once we desire to attain His pleasure by leaving aside the material gains for His sake and the attainment of His love becomes our sole objective. Once we attain His nearness, it will become impossible for any power in the world to overpower us. The angels of God Almighty would themselves descend to help us, and we would achieve those milestones [about which it is considered that] they cannot be achieved without the material means. [...] You need to make a commitment that you will propagate the Faith throughout the world to make it victorious, and the only method to achieve this, is to befriend

God Almighty. Once you befriend God Almighty, you will be able to attain every milestone in this world.” (Ibid., p. 4)

Huzoorra continued:

“The communities of ma’murin [God’s appointees] do not succeed through material means. If they had succeeded through material means, their opponents would have the right to object that ‘their progress is not the sign of their truthfulness, since anyone can succeed with the help of earthly means.’ In this case, what would be the difference between those [divine] communities and the other [worldly] communities? In short, firstly, we do not possess worldly means, and even if we attain those means [in the future], it would be our mistake to hope that we can succeed by only relying on them. [...]

“This age is the time for our Jamaat’s progress, thus, you need to establish a strong connection with Allah the Almighty. You can succeed only through two means:

“First, through the love of Allah the Almighty. You do not need any worldly means to attain His love, but rather, you are required to spend your lives leaving aside worldly desires for His sake. Second, through those means that have been taught by the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, such as salat, waza’if, remembrance of Allah, seeking prayers from Him, supplicating to Him with great anguish, and asking Him to reform our thoughts, actions, and minds. These are the only means through which one can attain the nearness and love of Allah the Almighty. Moreover, you also need to enhance the level of your sacrifices as much as possible.” (Ibid., p. 5)

Huzoorra further said that the attainment of progress requires one to continuously strive, and to never halt their efforts. One should regularly pray

میقتسملا, meaning “Guide us in the right path” (Surah al-Fatihah, Ch. 1: V. 6), and بر

املع یﻧدز, meaning “O my Lord, increase me in knowledge.” (Surah Ta Ha, Ch. 20: V. 115):

“We are required to always ponder over our actions and to make sure that each day is better than the previous one. We should always endeavour to leap forward. We should enhance the level of our worship and remembrance of Allah, and our connection with God Almighty should continue to progress. If one inculcates such a state, they

attain so many blessings that it makes them the recipients of God Almighty’s grace. And the one who becomes the recipient of God Almighty’s grace is free from all kinds of worries.” (Ibid., p. 5)

While advising the Jamaat, Huzoorra said:

“The communities established by God Almighty are not based on material objectives. Therefore, I advise members of the Jamaat to inculcate within themselves the love of Allah to the extent that they become the beloved of God Almighty, enhance the level of their worship of God Almighty and righteousness, and make a habit of offering Tahajjud prayer. [...] It is totally wrong to assume that one can succeed without acting on these things. The ultimate victory belongs to God Almighty. You can never be victorious until [the love of] God Almighty is inculcated in your hearts.” (Ibid., p. 6)

Emphasising the need for Muslims to make efforts with unity and discipline, Huzoorra said:

“Islam is a communal [jamaati] religion, and it is impossible for the Muslims to progress until they strive as a Community. Until they act with unity, they can never succeed in their objectives.” (Al Fazl, 19 September 1962, p. 2)

Huzoorra then advised the Ahmadi parents to not only inculcate the Islamic teachings within themselves but to teach the same to their progeny as well:

“Therefore, it is not enough that only you exhibit sincerity; rather, you should instil the passion of sincerity within your children as well. If you fail to do so, your individual sacrifices will not be deemed sufficient. I do not say that by failing to do so, you would become hell-bound; however, I would surely say that you would be deprived of a part of your [potential] reward.

“The meaning of a jamaat [divine community] is that it continues till the Day of Judgement. Individuals do pass away, however, jamaats do not. [...] Therefore, a jamaat ought to attain an everlasting life. [...] God Almighty has stated that Islam will continue until the Day of Judgement. Thus, it is necessary for every Muslim to make sure their children become [true] Muslims. [...] We proclaim that Ahmadiyyat is [the true] Islam. If Ahmadiyyat is [the true]

Islam, then it is our duty to ensure that our progeny becomes sincere Ahmadis, since Islam has to continue till the Day of Judgement. [...] Therefore, not only you are required to create a pious revolution within yourselves, but you also need to inculcate religious passion in your progeny. [...] One ought to bring about such a revolution that upon seeing your examples, everyone may realise that God Almighty has established Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya as a source of reviving the Faith in this age.” (Ibid., pp. 2-3)

Huzoorra then mentioned the following couplet of the Promised Messiahas:

“Within me – from head to foot – is concealed that Beloved; O my ill-wisher! Beware when you try to attack me!” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, Part V [English], p. 172)

Commenting on this, Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra said:

“No one can ever remain safe [from God’s wrath] after opposing the one in whose heart [the love of] God Almighty inhabits. In fact, such people are opposing God Almighty. [...] Therefore, when one instils [the love of] God Almighty within their hearts, He never lets them face failure.” (Al Fazl, 19 September 1962, p. 4)

Towards the end, Huzoorra said:

“The members of the Jamaat need to increase their numbers, exhibit good examples, and make efforts to strengthen and propagate Ahmadiyyat. Both women and men are required to pay attention to this. It is my prayer that God Almighty may enable you to act upon this, and make you the recipient of His blessings, so that [the name of] the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa may continue to flourish in the world.” (Ibid.)

Friday Sermon

Mubarak Mosque, Islamabad, Tilford, UK

30 June 2023

Muhammadsa: The great exemplar

After reciting the tashahhud, ta‘awwuz and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa stated:

The incident of Sawad bin Ghaziyah’sra unique expression of love for the Holy Prophetsa was mentioned in the previous sermon. Further details about this are as follows:

Sawad bin Ghaziyahra returned victorious from this battle and imprisoned an individual from the idolaters named Khalid bin Hisham. Later on, the Holy Prophetsa appointed him to collect the spoils of war from the Battle of Khaibar. According to some narrations, the aforementioned

incident is attributed to Sawad bin ‘Amrra and not Hazrat Sawad bin Ghaziyahra

However, it appears that the incident attributed to Sawad bin ‘Amr is different and in most books of history and biographies of the Holy Prophetsa, this incident has mostly been attributed to Sawad bin Ghaziyahra (Usd al-Ghabah, Vol. 2, p. 590, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut)

Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra has mentioned details of this incident in The Life and Character of the Seal of Prophets as

follows:

“It was Friday, 17 Ramadan, 2 A.H. or 14 March, 623 A.D., according to the Christian calendar system. In the morning, Salat was first offered and then these worshippers of Divine Unity fell into prostration before the One God, in an open field. After this, the Holy Prophetsa delivered an address on Jihad. When light began to appear, the Holy Prophetsa began to arrange the Muslim ranks with the indication of an arrow. A Companion by the name of Sawad was

standing somewhat ahead of his row. The Holy Prophetsa used his arrow to indicate that he should move back in line. It so happened however, that the wooden part of the arrow belonging to the Holy Prophetsa touched his chest, whereupon he boldly protested, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! God has sent you with the truth and justice, but you have unjustly poked me with your arrow. By God, I insist upon retribution.’ The Companions were shocked, as to what had come over Sawad. However, the Holy

Prophetsa stated with extreme affection, ‘Alright Sawad, you may poke me with an arrow as well,’ and the Holy Prophetsa lifted the cloth upon his chest. In his immense love, Sawad stepped forward and kissed the chest of the Holy Prophetsa. The Holy Prophetsa smiled and enquired, ‘Sawad, why did you devise this plan?’ He responded with a trembling voice, ‘O Messengersa of Allah! The enemy is before us. There is no telling whether I shall live to return or not. It was my desire, therefore, to touch your blessed body before my martyrdom.” (The Life & Character of the Seal of Prophets, Vol. 2, pp. 143-144)

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra has mentioned a similar incident near the time of the demise of the Holy Prophetsa. The incident he mentioned, which is similar to this, referred to the time close to the demise of the Holy Prophetsa and did not take place during the Battle of Badr. Hazrat Musleh-eMaudra states:

“When the time of the demise of the Holy Prophetsa drew near, he gathered his Companions and said, ‘I am human just like you. It may well be that some shortcomings remain in discharging your rights and I may have caused you harm. Instead of going before God Almighty in a state of you holding a claim against me, I say to you that if I have caused any one of you any harm, he may avenge himself in this very world.’

“Given how much the Companions loved the Holy Prophetsa, one can imagine how hearing these words of the Holy Prophetsa would have pierced their hearts and the emotional state that would have overcome them. This is indeed what happened. The Companions were overcome with emotion. Tears flowed from their eyes and it became difficult for them to speak. However, one Companion stood and said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, since you have asked whether you caused any harm to anyone, and if so, they can seek retribution, I wish to seek a retribution from you.’

“The Holy Prophetsa said, ‘Yes, tell me quickly, what harm have I caused you?’ The Companion said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, during a certain battle, you were arranging the ranks and in order to move forward you had to move past one of the rows. As you passed the row to move forward, your elbow hit my back. Today I wish to seek retribution for this.’ The Companions state, ‘We had begun to draw our swords out of anger, and our eyes were bloodshot with anger. Had the Holy Prophetsa not been in our midst at that time, we would have surely cut him to pieces.’ However, the Holy Prophetsa turned his back towards him and said, ‘Here, take your retribution and strike me with your elbow in the same way.’ That man said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, not yet. When your elbow struck me, my back was bare, whereas your back is covered by your shirt.’ The Holy Prophetsa said, ‘Lift my shirt from my back so that this person may take his retribution.’ When the Companions lifted the Holy Prophet’ssa shirt from his back, with trembling lips and flowing tears, that Companion moved forward and in a display of affection, kissed the Holy Prophet’ssa bare back and said, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, how could such an insignificant servant take retribution? As soon as I learned from you that perhaps the perilous hour is drawing near, thinking about which causes the hairs on the backs of our necks to stand, I desired

for my lips to touch that blessed body which God has made the culmination of all His blessings, and so I used the touching of the elbow as an excuse to be able to kiss you one last time. O Messengersa of Allah, what is the matter with being struck by an elbow; everything we have is sacrificed for you. I merely used this as an excuse so that I may have an opportunity to kiss you.’ The Companions who, at one point, were ready to kill this man and had become infuriated with what he had said; upon seeing all of this unfold and realising that there was something completely different in his heart, said, ‘All of us became angry with ourselves, wondering why did we not come up with this in order to kiss our beloved.’”

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states, “This was our guide, our leader (the Holy Prophetsa), who established an example for us in every facet of life, the like of which cannot be found in any other prophet.” (Uswah-e-Hasanah, Anwar-ul-Ulum, Vol. 17, pp. 128-130)

Regarding the Companions’ slogans during the Battle of Badr, it is recorded by Hazrat Urwahra bin Zubair who states: “On the day of the battle, the slogan of the Muhajirin was ‘O Banu Abdur Rahman’. The slogan of the Khazraj tribe was ‘O Banu Abdullah’ while the slogan of the Aus was, ‘O Banu Ubaidullah’. The Holy Prophetsa gave his cavalry the name, ‘Khailullah’. There is also a narration which states that on that day, everyone’s slogan was:

تما روصنم ای

‘O Mansoor! Kill them.’” (Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad, Bab Ghazwah Badr al-Kubra, Vol. 4, p. 44, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah Beirut, 1993)

According to one narration, during the Battle of Badr, the slogan of the Ansar of Medina, or as I mentioned the identifying call, was “Ahad, Ahad” [One]. This was chosen so that in the darkness of the night or during fierce battle, they could be identified as Ansar by this slogan. Similarly, the slogan or battle cry of the Muhajirin was ‘O Banu Abdur Rahman.’” (Al-Sirah al-Halabiyyah, Vol. 2, p. 242, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut 2002)

Further details regarding the Holy Prophet’ssa guidance in relation to the war has been mentioned as follows: when the Holy Prophetsa had arranged the ranks, he told his Companions, “Do not attack until I give the order, and if the enemy draws close to you, move them back by shooting arrows at them, because arrows shot from a distance usually prove to be useless and the arrows go to waste. Similarly, do not swing your swords until the enemy is very close.”

There is mention of a sermon delivered by the Holy Prophetsa. The Holy Prophetsa delivered a sermon to the Companions in which he drew attention towards Jihad and enjoined patience. He then said, “By remaining patient in times of hardship, Allah the Almighty removes worries and grants salvation from sorrow.” (Al-Sirah alHalabiyyah, Bab Zikr al-Maghaziyahsa Vol. 2 p. 221, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah 2002; Tarikh al-Tabari, Vol. 2 p. 32, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah Beirut)

At another instance, the details of this sermon delivered by the Holy Prophetsa have been recorded as follows:

The Holy Prophetsa praised and glorified Allah the Almighty and then said, “I incite

you towards that which Allah the Almighty incites you and I forbid you from that which He has forbidden you. Allah the Almighty, Who is Most Supreme and Superior to all gives you the message of truth. He prefers truthfulness and grants lofty stations in His nearness to those who are virtuous. Along with this, they are remembered and they vie with one other in excelling each other. Today, you have reached a rank of the many ranks of truth, and Allah the Almighty only accepts that which is done for the sake of His pleasure. Showing patience in times of hardship is something by which Allah removes sorrow and saves one from pain. You will find salvation in the hereafter with it, you will find salvation by means of it (i.e. by showing patience). The Prophetsa of Allah is present among you, who warns you and commands you to fear Allah, lest He comes to know something about you which becomes the reason for His displeasure. Allah the Almighty states:

‘The abhorrence of Allah was greater than your own abhorrence of yourselves.’ (40:11)

Look towards that which He has commanded you in the Book; He showed you His signs and granted you honour after humiliation. Hold firmly to Allah so that He may be pleased with you. Fulfil the trial of your Lord in this place. You will become worthy of His mercy and forgiveness which He has promised you. Whatever He promises is true, His word is the truth, His punishment is severe. You and I are with Allah Who is Living and Self-Subsisting. We pray to Him for our victory, we hold fast to his threshold and place our complete trust in Him. To Him shall we all return. May Allah the Almighty grant forgiveness to all of us, and to all Muslims.” (Subul al-Huda wa al-

Rashad, Bab Ghazwatu Badr al-Kubra, Vol. 4 p. 34, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut 1993) This was the detailed version.

During the battle, the Holy Prophetsa prohibited the killing of certain people. In this regard, Hazrat Ibn Abbas relates, “On the day of the Battle of Badr, the Holy Prophetsa addressed his Companions and said, ‘I have come to know that the Banu Hashim and a few others have been coerced to accompany the Quraish. They have not come of their own volition and do not wish to fight against us. Those of you who encounter any man from the Banu Hashim should not kill him, and whoever encounters Abu al-Bakhtari should not kill him, and whoever encounters Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (the Holy Prophet’ssa paternal uncle) should not kill him; these people have been forced to accompany the Quraish.’” Hazrat Ibn Abbas further relates, “Hazrat Abu Huzaifah bin Utbah remarked, ‘Shall we kill our fathers, sons, brothers and other relatives and spare Abbas? By Allah, if I encounter Abbas I will surely end his life with my sword.’” The narrator reports that when the Holy Prophetsa was informed about this, he addressed Hazrat Umar bin Khattabra and said, “O Abu Hafs!” Hazrat Umarra says, “This was the first day that the Holy Prophetsa addressed me with this title.” The Holy Prophetsa said, “Will the uncle of the Prophet of Allah be struck down by a sword?” Hazrat Umarra submitted, “O Messengersa of Allah! Allow me to sever his head. (i.e. referring to Abu Huzaifah who had shown hypocrisy) By Allah, he (i.e. Abu Huzaifah) has shown signs of hypocrisy,” Afterwards, Abu Huzaifah used to say, “I was constantly troubled on account of the words I uttered that day. I was always anxious about it except that I hoped my martyrdom would serve as expiation.” It so happened that Abu Huzaifah was martyred

in the battle of Yamamah. (Sirat Ibn Hisham, p. 429, Bab Ghazwah Badr, Dar al-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut 2001)

Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra writes:

“The Holy Prophetsa addressed the Companions and said:

“‘There are some people among the army of the Quraish who have not come to participate in this campaign with pleasure; rather, they have only come along under the pressure of the chieftains of the Quraish. They are not our enemy. Similarly, there are also such people in this army, who in our time of hardship, dealt with us generously when we were in Makkah. It is our obligation to repay their benevolence they conferred upon us while we were in Makkah. As such, if a Muslim subdues any such individual, he should not cause him any harm.’

“Among the first category of people, the Holy Prophetsa specifically mentioned the name of Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib and in the second category of people, he mentioned the name of Abu al-Bakhtari, and forbade their killing. (this is because they used to help the Muslims and grant them ease) However, the course of events took such an unavoidable turn that Abu alBakhtari could not be spared from death. Nonetheless, prior to his death he found out that the Holy Prophetsa had forbidden his killing.”  (The Life & Character of the Seal of Prophets, Vol. 2, pp. 149-150)

Historical records show that following this, the Holy Prophetsa returned to his tent and engaged in prayer once again. This was a place prepared especially for him. Hazrat Abu Bakrra was also present, and the tent was being protected by a group of Ansar under the leadership of Hazrat Sa’dra bin Mu’az. (Al-Sirah al-Halabiyyah, Zikr Maghaziyyah, Vol. 2, p. 221, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut 2002)

Hazrat Ibn Abbasra reports, “On the day of Badr, while he was in a large tent, the Holy Prophetsa said,

That is, ‘O my Allah, I swear by Your word and promise that You vouchsafed to me. O my Lord, if the destruction of all Muslims is Your desire, then after today, there will be no one left who will worship

You.’ At that moment, Hazrat Abu Bakrra grasped the Holy Prophet’ssa hand. He then submitted, ‘O Prophetsa of Allah, this is enough, you have gone to great lengths in supplicating to your Lord,’ and the Holy Prophetsa at the time was clad in armour. He exited the tent whilst reciting:

(Surah al-Qamar, Ch.54: V.46-47)

That is, ‘All of them will soon face defeat and turn away. This is the very hour they were warned about, an hour that is terribly severe and bitter.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Jihad wa al-Sair Bab Ma Qeela fi Dar’I Nabiyysa wa al-Qamees fi al Harb Hadith 2915)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbasra continues, “Hazrat Umar bin Khattabra related to me that on the day that the Battle of Badr took place, the Holy Prophetsa looked to the idolaters. They were 1000 in number, while his Companions were 319. The Prophetsa of Allah turned toward the Qibla, spread his arms out and proclaimed in a loud voice to his Lord,

of your Lord, and He answered you with a promise, saying, “I will assist you with a thousand of the angels, following one another.”’ Thus, Allah assisted the Holy Prophetsa with angels.” This narration is from Sahih Muslim. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Jihad wa al-Sair Bab al-Imdad bi alMala’ikah fi Ghazwah Badr wa Abaha alGhana’im, Hadith 4588)

Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra has written about this incident in his book in the following words:

“After this, the Holy Prophetsa retired to his tent, and became engaged in supplications once again. Hazrat Abu Bakrra also accompanied him, and a party of the Ansar under the command of Sa‘dra bin Mu‘adh were stationed around the tent to stand guard. After a short time, there was an uproar in the field of battle, which indicated that the Quraish had launched a full attack. At that time, the Holy Prophetsa was weeping profusely and supplicating before God with his hands extended. He would say with extreme anguish:

this state of the Holy Prophetsa, and at times would spontaneously say, ‘O Messenger of Allah! May my mother and father be sacrificed for thee! Do not worry, Allah shall definitely fulfil His promises.’ However, the Holy Prophetsa remained constantly engaged in his supplications, weeping and wailing, according to the following Persian proverb:

‘The wiser a saint, the greater his fear.’

The Holy Prophetsa remained occupied in prayer and weeping.” (The Life & Character of the Seal of Prophetsa, Vol. 2, pp. 150-151)

What is “tawakkul” [complete trust in Allah]? Whilst explaining this Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra states:

“The Holy Prophetsa arranged the Companions in ranks during the Battle of Badr. He organised them in the right places and instructed them how to fight. Thereafter, he sat on the raised platform and began to pray. He did not leave the Companions whilst in Madinah to remain alone there and be occupied in prayer. In fact, he first brought the Companions to the battlefield, arranged them, gave them various instructions, and only after that did he sit at the deck to begin supplicating. This is the trust of God which one should adopt.” (Tafsir-e-Kabir, Vol. 6, p. 541)

In other words, to utilise the means and make whatever effort one can, and to then be occupied in prayer is what is known as “tawakkul” [complete trust in God].

The Promised Messiahas states:

“In the Holy Quran, the Holy Prophetsa was repeatedly given the promise of the victory over the disbelievers, but when the Battle of Badr—which was the first battle of Islam—started, the Holy Prophet, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, began supplicating and praying, and these are the words that issued from his tongue:

Meaning: ‘O my Lord! If you destroy these people (they were just 313 men), none will worship You till Doomsday.’

Allah, fulfill the promise You vouchsafed to me. O Allah, fulfill the promise You vouchsafed to me. O Allah, if you allow this party of Muslims to be destroyed, you will no longer be worshipped on this earth.’ Whilst facing the Qiblah [direction of prayer, i.e. the Ka’bah in Mecca] with his arms spread out, the Holy Prophetsa continued to call out to his Lord until his mantle fell from his shoulders. Hazrat Abu Bakr came to the Holy Prophetsa, lifted his mantle and placed it back on his shoulders. Then, Hazrat Abu Bakrra embraced the Holy Prophetsa from behind him and submitted, ‘O Messengersa of Allah, your prayers of anguish before your Lord are sufficient for you. He will surely fulfil the promises made to you.’ Upon this, Allah the Almighty revealed the following verse:

‘When you implored the assistance

“O my God! Fulfil Your promises. O my Master! If today, this party of Muslims is destroyed in the field of battle, there shall remain none who would worship You on the face of this earth.”

At this time, the Holy Prophetsa was in a state of such agony, that sometimes he would fall into prostration, and at times he would stand up to call upon God. The mantle of the Holy Prophetsa would repeatedly fall from his back, and Hazrat Abu Bakrra would pick it up and place it on the Holy Prophetsa again and again. Hazrat Alira relates that during the course of battle, whenever the Holy Prophetsa would come to mind, he would run towards his tent, but whenever he went there, he found the Holy Prophetsa weeping in prostration. He also heard that the Holy Prophetsa would constantly repeat the words:

“O my Ever-Living God! O my Life-Giving Master!”

Hazrat Abu Bakrra was greatly disturbed by

When Hazrat Abu Bakrra heard these words from the mouth of the Holy Prophetsa, he submitted, ‘O Messenger of Allah, why are you so perturbed? God has given you the firm promise that He would give victory.’ He said, ‘This is true, but I am keeping my eyes on the fact that He is in need of no one.’ That is to say, God is not obligated to fulfil any promise.” (Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya [English], Part 5 Appendix, p. 343)

Allah the Almighty is Self-Sufficient, and so one should remain fearful and mindful of this fact at all times. During the time when the Holy Prophetsa was supplicating in his tent, he was overcome by slumber but awoke all of a sudden and said, “O Abu Bakrra, rejoice! The help of your Lord has arrived. Look, Gabriel has come on horseback, holding the reins of his horse firmly, whose feet are covered with dust.” (Sirat Ibn Hisham, p. 428 Dar al-Kutub alIlmiyyah, Beirut 2001) This was a narration from Sirat Ibn Hisham.

It is stated in another narration that the Holy Prophetsa said, “O Abu Bakr, rejoice! This is Gabriel wearing a yellow turban. He is holding the reins to his horses between the heaven and the earth. When he reached the earth he disappeared before me for a short while, and then appeared once more. The

feet of his horses were covered in dust, and he was saying, ‘After you supplicated, Allah the Almighty’s support has now arrived.’”

(Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad, Vol. 4 p, 37, Zikr Ghazwah al-Badr al-Kubra, Dar alKutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut)

In relation to the Holy Prophet’ssa participation in the Battle of Badr and his personal involvement on the battlefield, it is written that during the Battle of Badr the Holy Prophetsa had appointed Zubairra bin al-Awwam to the right flank, Miqdadra bin Amr to the left flank, and Qais bin Abi Sa’sa’ to the Saqah, orthe infantry. The overall leadership of the army was in the hands of the Holy Prophetsa himself. The Holy Prophetsa was in the front lines, and he gave instructions to all of the Companions. The Holy Prophetsa stated, “None of you should advance until I step in front of them.”

Similarly, whilst advising on how to use their weapons effectively, the Holy Prophetsa said: “When the enemy come within your reach, fire your arrows, but save your arrows as much as possible.” The incident of when the Holy Prophetsa was sitting [in his tent] and praying is before the battle started. The incident has been written in a way which may seem like the Holy Prophetsa did not take part in the battle. He took part in the battle, but the incident of the prayers was before the start of the battle, as a result of which Allah the Almighty sent His succour through the angels. Nonetheless, with regards to the Holy Prophetsa participating in the Battle of Badr, Hazrat Alira says: “On the day of Badr, the Holy Prophetsa was our shelter and he was the closest to the enemy. On that day, he fought the fiercest of all the fighters.” (Da’irah Ma’arif Sirat Muhammad Rasulullahsa, Vol. 6 p. 174 & 201, Bazm Iqbal Lahore, April 2022)

With regards to the Quraish arriving in the battlefield and the mutual clash, it is written that when the Quraish reached the plains of Badr, they sent Umair bin Wahb to see how many people the Holy Prophetsa had in his army. So Umair mounted his horse and circled the Muslim army. He then returned to the Quraish of Makkah and said: “In my estimation they are slightly more or less than 300.” He then went back to the Muslim army and checked again in case there was a contingent waiting in ambush. Umair bin Wahb went on his horse and rode for quite some distance. He returned and said: “It does not seem like they have any reinforcements, but O Quraish! I see an evil calamity befalling you. I have seen such camels that carry death upon their backs. The camels of Yathrib are sure to bring about death! They do not carry any means of defence and they have no shelter except their swords. They will not be killed until they take one of us with them. If they take out as many men as they are in number, then what good will there be left afterwards? Now do as you see appropriate.” After assessing the situation, he presented his own opinion. After hearing all this, Hakim bin Hizam went to Utbah bin Rabi’ah and said: “You are a respected leader amongst the Quraish, therefore take everyone back and give the blood money for Amr bin alHadrami.” Utbah said: “I agree. So go and tell Ibn Hanzalah (i.e. Abu Jahl- Abu Jahl’s father’s name was Hanzalah).” Thus, Hakim bin Hizam went to Abu Jahl to persuade him and said: “Utbah sent me to you and said that he would pay the blood money,

you should take the Quraish back.” Abu Jahl said: “From the time Utbah has seen Muhammad he has become frightened and is showing cowardice. This cannot be! By God we shall not return until Allah settles the matter between us and Muhammad!”

Abu Jahl then said: “Utbah is also saying this because he knows that the Muslims are like one morsel for our camels (i.e. they will kill them easily) and among the Muslims is his son, (Utbah’s son was a Muslim) Perhaps he does not wish to fight because of his son is in the opposing camp.” Utbah’s son was Abu Huzaifah who was present in the Muslim army during the Battle of Badr.

When Utbah learnt that Abu Jahl had mocked him calling him a coward, Utbah said: “That coward (referring to Abu Jahl) will soon come to know who is a coward and frightened.” (Sirat Ibn Hisham, pp. 244-

army, so that they could console such hearts which had begun to sink (to console those people who were frightened). For this purpose, the chieftains of the Quraish dispatched ‘Umair bin Wahb to ride his horse around the Muslim army, so as to gather its actual number, and whether it was supported by any hidden reinforcements. Hence, ‘Umair mounted his horse and circled the Muslims, but he witnessed such awe, determination and fearlessness in the face of death on the countenances of these Muslims, that he returned immensely awestricken and addressed the Quraish saying:

people of his own accord that:

“‘It is not correct to fight against relatives. We should turn back and leave Muhammad to his devices and let him settle his matter with the tribes of Arabia himself. We shall see what happens, and after all it is not such an easy task to fight these Muslims, because even if you call me a coward, although I am not … I see a people who are eager to purchase death.’

246 Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, First Edition 2001)

Hazrat Mirza Bashir Ahmadra has mentioned details about this in the following manner:

“Now the armies had lined up before one another […]” Before this point, the contingents were gathering for the battle, and the disbelievers had a vast army. During this time the Holy Prophetsa remained engaged in prayers. But when the armies lined up in rows facing each other, at that time the Holy Prophetsa was present on the battlefield.

He writes:

“Now the armies had lined up before one another. However, at this time, a strange spectacle of Divine power manifested itself. The standing arrangement of both armies was such that the Muslim army appeared to be more than, rather, double its actual number in the eyes of the Quraish. Due to this, the disbelievers were struck with awe. On the other hand, the army of the Quraish appeared lesser than their actual number in the eyes of the Muslims. Due to this, the Muslims were fortified with great confidence. The Quraish attempted to discern the correct figure of the Muslim

“‘I have not been able to spot any hidden reinforcements, but O company of the Quraish! I have witnessed that in the Muslim army, it is not men who ride upon the saddles of these she-camels, rather, death is seated upon them. Destruction is mounted upon the backs of the she-camels of Yathrib.’

“When the Quraish heard this news, a wave of anxiety rippled through their ranks. Suraqah, who had come as their guarantor, was so awe-stricken, that he fled upon his heals. When people attempted to restrain him, he said:

‘I see that which you do not.’

“When Hakim bin Hizam heard the opinion of ‘Umair, he frantically came to ‘Utbah bin Rabi‘ah and said:

“‘O ‘Utbah, after all, it is the retribution of ‘Amr Hadrami that you seek from Muhammadsa, because he was your confederate. Would it not do if you were to pay the blood money to his heirs, and turn back along with the Quraish? You shall be forever known by a good name.’

“‘Utbah, who was frightened himself could not ask for anything better, and he immediately said:

“‘Of course! I agree; And after all Hakim! These Muslims and we are relatives. Does it seem right for a brother to raise his sword against his brother, and father against his son? Go to Abul-Hakam (i.e., Abu Jahl) and present this idea to him Then, ‘Utbah mounted his camel and began to convince

“When the Holy Prophetsa noticed ‘Utbah from afar, he said, ‘If there is anyone from among the army of the Quraish who possesses some nobility, then it is certainly in the rider of that red camel. If these people listen to his advice, it would do them good.’

“However, when Hakim bin Hizam approached Abu Jahl, and presented this proposal to him, could it be expected that this Pharaoh of the people would be talked into such a thing? He instantly retorted, “Well, well, now ‘Utbah has begun to see his relatives before him!” Then he called upon ‘Amir Hadrami, the brother of ‘Amr Hadrami, and said, ‘Have you heard what your ally, ‘Utbah says? Especially, when the retribution of your brother is in our grips!’ The eyes of ‘Amir began to gorge with blood in rage and according to the Arab custom, he tore off his clothes becoming naked and began to shout:

!ہارمع او !ہارمع او

“‘Woe to ‘Amr! My brother is not being avenged! Woe to ‘Amr! My brother is not being avenged!’

“This desert cry, enflamed a fire of enmity in the hearts of the Quraish and the furnace of war began to burn in full force.” (The Life & Character of the Seal of Prophets, Vol. 2, pp. 146-148)

After this, a full-scale battle ensued. The remaining accounts will be mentioned in the future, God-Willing.
