"Festival Of Lights" Lights Up Wawa

Article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied Last Saturday our community "lighted up" and what a display of holiday magic it was. Businesses and town folk were invited to join the celebration by decorating their businesses and homes with festive lighting, lawn adornments, Santa's reindeer, sleighs, and blow-up reminders of everything Christmas.

Displays lined every street in town and the Wawa transit bus started moving the groups around town early in order to cover the six trips it took to transport over 100

revelers to take-in the displays and mark their ballot for the final winners.

There was nary a lull in the festivities. Back at the community centre, beautifully set tables continually filled up between bus trips where town folk dug in to the hot chocolate topped with marshmallows, Tim Horton's donuts, baked goodies supplied by our talented bakers and what better way to enjoy hot chocolate but with a huge cinnamon sticky bun. We may have a reputation of becoming an aging population, but every seat was filled with families

toting their many youngsters who promise to keep Wawa vibrant for many years to come. Assistant Director of Tourism Head Elf Brian Lachine directed the fine tuned celebration and kept the momentum moving playing holiday tunes on his guitar delighting the kid in all of us - "Jingle Bells....Bat Man Smells"! Mayor Rody mingled through the revelers and at the appointed hour, plugged in the circuit and the two huge natural evergreen trees guarding the entrance to the community centre suddenly sprang to LED life illuminating their place of honour.

Come spring the previously humble trees will always remind me of this momentous holiday celebration.

As always in community festivals tremendous leg work goes on behind the scenes and much thanks also goes to the businesses which provided Door Crasher specials during the day: Roxy Bowling, Wawa and Area Victiim Services, John's ValuMart, Fenlon's Pharmacy, Wawa Motor Inn and Tim Hortons.

Later the votes were tallied and the winners will receive their local gift card packages in the new year courtesy of the BIA and Municipality. $200 gift card package goes to the first place winner, the residence of the Andre family at 148 Regina, and the prize is made even more deserving as young Tyler risked frost bitten fingers to decorate his home.

Runner up, the Davidson residence at 172 Regina will

received a $50 gift card package, Fenlon's Pharmacy wins the business prize of $200 gift card pack, with Tim Horton's running up with a $50 valued prize.

Much thanks and praise for a superb celebration goes to the organizers of the event: Municipality of Wawa, Wawa Family Health Team, EDC and BIA, Mayor Rody at the helm, goodies baked by Judy Moore, Mary Anne Pearson, Rose Ann Turyk, Tim Horton timbits, and Andy Stevens for the hot chocolate. See you all in 2018 at the next community celebration.

Toronto, ON, December 13, 2017 – LCBO is delighted to announce the winning bag design for the annual Think of Me bag campaign, which raises awareness of the dangers of impaired driving. Beating out tens of thousands of submissions, the powerful design from Wawa eighth-grader Jazmyn Maki will be printed on 60,000 bags and distributed at LCBO stores across the province in advance of the 2018 May long weekend.

Now in its 16th year, the LCBO’s Think of Me Bag campaign is a grassroots partnership

between LCBO stores, local police services and elementary schools. The program aims to raise community awareness of the dangerous consequences of impaired driving by offering Ontario elementary schools the opportunity for their students to decorate single-bottle bags with powerful “Don’t drink and drive” messages. The provincewide contest is new this year.

This year, over 50,000 blank bags were handed out to elementary schools in Ontario.

Every bag designed by a student is returned to their local LCBO store and customers

will see their holiday purchases wrapped in these powerful messages in hopes they think twice about getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.

Customers who take home a Think of Me Bag this season are encouraged to share on social media with #thinkofme.

Michipicoten Harbour Memories - c. 1920-40's ...Story Continued From The December 13th Edition of The Algoma News.

The lake played an important role in our lives. In the winter it provided a vast skating rink, or as much as we could clean.

My father, along with others, would test the thickness of the ice with an axe to determine if it was safe for skating. But there was always the danger of shifting winds that could break up the ice and blow it out from the shore in an incredibly short time. I vividly recall an occasion when some of my friends and I were caught on the ice, when there was suddenly a great rumbling and gurgling below our rink. My father was standing on the shore, shouting and waving his arms. Summoning us to hurry. By the time we reached the shore, the ice was already breaking away and drifting out.

We followed instructions to jump quickly into my father’s waiting arms. We landed safely, some of us with somewhat wet legs and feet.

Winters were severely cold.

Some winters the lake would freeze solidly to allow groups of Harbour residents to walk on the ice over to Michipicoten Mission. I recall accompanying my parents on such an expedition. We would visit with Mary St. Laurent and have a delectable chicken dinner served at the Woods family hotel, the Log Cabin Inn. Then all would set out for the homeward journey before nightfall.

Tobogganing was a favourite winter recreation, fraught with excitement and danger.

The Mills brothers would build toboggan jumps on the hills that provided thrills and sometimes a sore tail-bone or a broken leg.

Before the lake froze over we walked to Mud Lake to skate, where a bonfire was built on the shore to warm ourselves.

Sometime during the winter my parents would take a quite vacation at their cabin at Wigwam Bay. I would travel the trail by dog-drawn toboggan back and forth to school. This ride was provided by a gentleman who captained the family fishing boat and who owned a dog who was trained in harness.

Later, as I grew older, transportation would be by snowshoes or skis. Friends would join us on weekends at the cabin, skiing the trail in winter and arriving by boat in summer.

Summer provided opportunities for boating, swimming and a fine sandy beach where we spent countless hours. Summer nights there would be bonfires on the beach, with wiener roasts, marshmallow roasts, music and singing.

Most of what is recorded here is from a time prior to a road link with Wawa. The common mode of transportation out to the Sault, or other destinations, was the Algoma Central Railway.

I have very early memories of travelling to and from Sault Ste. Marie on the steamships “Caribou” or “Manitou”, which we boarded from the wharf near the Mission. We were transported by boat from the Harbour to the wharf. When the Harbour was linked to Wawa by road, there was the option of taking a small aircraft from there.

There was a one classroom public school, attended by children from the Harbour and the First Nations reservation at the Halfway (named thus because it was halfway between the village and the original reservation at Mission Beach). The classroom was heated by a huge stove with a metal protector around it.

This protector served as a great device to hold wet mittens for drying after winter recess.

The big event of the school year was the Christmas concert.

A platform was constructed, and wire was suspended to hold donated bedsheets that served as curtains. My mother would come afternoons to play the piano for rehearsals. Day by day the excitement mounted as costumes were sewn, scenery constructed and the tree and decorations were put in place.

Opening night the students were as excited as if a Broadway opening were taking place.

The most memorable performance of my Michipicoten stage career was the Christmas that we presented the musical, “Snow White.” I got to play the lead, Snow White; Ken Mills played the Prince; Aileen Mills played the Witch; Johnny Oster played Dopey. My apologies to all the other performers, too many to remember, who may be reading this and are not mentioned. For the forest scene, the older school boys cut small evergreen trees and attached stands to place them on stage. My costume was sewn by Mom, using my Snow White doll’s costume as a model.

concluded with the arrival of Santa Claus, played for many years by my father. Every child in the community received a gift from the community tree, along with a bag of candy and nuts. The community tree custom began in our store, where my Grandpa Summers played Santa Claus. But the population increased, requiring re-location to the school and the co-operative effort of all the women of the village.

Christmas Eve was a time when the ecumenical spirit was alive in our community. Almost the whole village attended midnight mass at the little Roman Catholic mission church on the native reserve. The Mass was conducted by a Roman Catholic priest who traveled periodically from Garden River to serve the mission church on the Michipicoten Reserve. My mother played the organ for this service. She would rehearse with a choir for weeks prior to Christmas. However, the music that pleased me most were the carols sung in the Cree language by a native lady. The people of our reserve were Ojibway, but this lady had come from a Cree reserve, somewhere to the north. After the service, in the crisp winter air, we joined voices to sing Christmas carols all the way home.

The spiritual life of the Protestant community was not neglected. The United Church minister from Wawa visited mid-weekly to hold service in the school. Mother played the piano for church and when Grandma Summers became bedridden, service was conducted in our living room. This home-church had a warm, nurturing quality about it. Service was followed by coffee and cookies and a rousing discussion of the sermon topic. Because he had to travel by train and would not be able to return home until the following day, the minister would stay overnight with our family or the Bucks. He was invariably young and newly married and his wife would often accompany him.

Music was an integral part of the social life of the village.

Whatever the reason for meeting – dinners, cards, church – everyone finished off the evening around the piano for a sing-along. I am speaking now particularly of the Mills and Summers households, where the piano held an honoured place in the living room and was frequently played. Mom would buy up the latest popular sheet music whenever she visited Sault Ste. Marie. Added to these were the discoloured, worn sheets of alltime favourites.

My mother’s way of life at Michipicoten was shared by the other families that lived at the Harbour. They came to the “Bush” that offered natural beauty and much hard work, but few facilities for social living.

Conditions where meant that residents needed to create their own entertainment and depended on creative coooperation and non-discrimination. I value the lessons that I learned from these stalwart, loving people.

Grandma's Gingerbread Pancakes Ingredients Original recipe makes 10 pancakes • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground dried ginger • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 egg • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 cup molasses

• 1 1/2 cups water Directions 1. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, and cinnamon in a bowl; set aside. Beat the egg in a separate mixing bowl with the vanilla and molasses until smooth. Whisk in the water until completely incorporated. Stir the flour mixture into the molasses mixture until just combined -- a few lumps are okay.

2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle over medium-high heat.

Drop batter by large spoonfuls onto the griddle, and cook until bubbles form and the edges are dry. Flip, and cook until browned on the other side. Repeat with remaining batter.

Luscious Eggnog We would like to wish everyone a Safe & Happy Holiday.

The Management & Staff of

1 h 30 m, 10 servings Ingredients 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1/3 cup white sugar salt to taste 2 1/2 cups milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup rum (optional) 2 drops yellow food coloring (optional) 1 pinch ground nutmeg Directions 1. In a heavy saucepan, combine eggs, white sugar, and salt; gradually stir in milk. Stirring constantly, cook for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, until mixture just coats a metal spoon.

Remove from heat, and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Place saucepan over ice water until custard cools, and then refrigerate until chilled.

2. In a chilled bowl, combine heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until stiff peaks form. Stir in rum and yellow food coloring. Fold whipped cream mixture into the cooled custard. Pour into serving bowl, and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Serve immediately.

Memo To Santa's Elves This memo was accidentally sent to my e-mail address, and I thought it might be of interest to your readers of the Algoma News Review, of what is happening at the North Pole these days, as Christmas approaches... Jim White. ************************************ December 6, 2017 MEMO TO: My Dear Elves FROM: Santa Claus RE: Preparations for 2017 Christmas Toy Deliveries and Plans for 2018 #1: Toy Deliveries: It is that time of the year again, when we are at our busiest, with all the letters and lists coming in from all the children all over the world.

There is such a heavy demand this year that I do not know how we are going to fill everyone's requests.

That is why I am authorizing all elves here at the North Pole to work any overtime that is necessary to complete the job by the December 24th deadline. Either I or Mrs. Claus will approve this overtime with thanks. However, only compensation of time off will be allowed, and must be taken by

October 31, 2018.

As I check my list, and I have checked it twice, I see there are many requests for the usual items, such as dolls, teddy bears, sleds, toboggans, foam sliding boards, bulldozer and tractor equipment, clothes, especially sweaters, Lego sets, dinosaurs, and skates. The hot trend this year seems to be tie ins with movies, such as 'Star Wars' coming out just before Christmas – how convenient is it not! Also hot on the lists are (still) 'Frozen' (the movie) memorabilia, anything of the 'Despicable Me' movie, Marvel 'Avengers', NERF guns, and drones.

I hope that we can find enough to fill all our orders. And techi things, such as X-Box & video games, and all these other electronic gadgets that I have no idea what they are for (but the children sure seem to know!).

Everybody seems to want to take pictures of what they witness and put it on this Facebook thing; and goodness gracious, 'selfies' (a new term I just heard about this week from one older child, well actually the boy's father!) I just don't know what's happening out there

anymore. I really must get 'with it' – no comments from the peanut gallery, please! Ho, ho, ho! I realize you have not had any experience in making these sorts of items, so I am announcing today that I have sub-contracted them out to the companies that make them. They guarantee shipment

by Amazon to the North Pole by December 21st. That will give us just enough time to get our orders ready, and wrapped and ready to go for Christmas Eve. One hot item that we can't fulfill is this adopt a pet from shelters. It is heartwarming to see this interest in rescuing these abandoned and abused animals, but that is beyond our capability. So me and my representative Santas' are emphasizing that it is up to their parents to arrange that. #2: Long Range Weather Forecast: The long-range weather forecast is for cold, windy and blowing snow in most parts of Canada and the U.S., as well as Europe. Australia and the southern Hemisphere is looking better.

Our usual northern weather could play havoc with our trip. Rudolph, our favourite red-nosed reindeer, will play a crucial role if that is the case. Unfortunately there does not seem to be much snow on the ground in some places. That will be hard on my sled. As an extra precaution, I have got our sleigh department to come up with a set of wheels that can easily be put on the runners of my sled, converting it to a wagon of sorts.

This will ensure that I don't have a problem arriving at everybody's home. However, no matter what weather we encounter, we will make it through and get all these toys delivered to all the kids, like we do every year. # 3: Deer Crew Alert: For the Deer Care Crew, please ensure that all the harnesses have been inspected, the bells polished and tuned up. I want the best jingle you can get for my trip on the 24th.

Make sure all the deer have been groomed, and especially make sure Rudolph has his nose shining nice and bright. Also, please ensure my sleigh has been cleaned, repainted as necessary, and attached to the reindeer by 4:00 pm on the 24th. Loading of the sled begins at that time, and lift-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Sharp. #4: Elf Staff Expansion Coming in 2018: I am happy to announce that we have been one of the few organizations in the world that have not had to downsize and re-organize this year during these stressful times. If anything, we really need to expand to meet the demand of all the extra children in the world that we must deliver to. But as you know, good elves are very hard to find.

So we will have to pull together again, with a super Elf effort this year, and then seriously begin our recruitment process. In early 2018 I will be accepting applications for new elves to work here at the North Pole. In the spring, I will begin training sessions for the successful candidates. There will be free food and lodging for all the new elf apprentices too, just as you all have now. There will be an inauguration ceremony for all those that pass the training in early December. I hope to see all elves out to this ceremony to welcome these new recruits. They will become full-fledged elves on December 31, 2018. #5 Santa Claus Parades: Again this year, our calendar has been full attending parades and visiting shopping malls, etc. It is such a busy time here at the North Pole, getting ready for the 24th., as you all know very well. But it is such a joy to attend these events, that I just cannot refuse their requests.

I wish that I could attend all the parades and visits to malls, nursing homes, etc. Thank goodness for the volunteers who dress up like me, and fill in. Thank goodness too for Mrs. Claus who is

here to help me at this busy time when I am away doing some of the special visits that touch my heart. In particular it is the hospital appearances that touch me the most. To see their smiles makes sit all worth while. I want to thank everyone for giving her your full co-operation, as usual, in my absence. #6: Santa Refutes Rumour That He Is On A Diet: I wish to announce here that I am not on a diet. I am still the same old Jolly St. Nick that you have always known. Mrs. Claus has my red suit all cleaned up and ready to go, and she did not have to make any alterations at all either. It still fits perfectly. But Mrs. Claus does want to put me on an exercise regimen in the New Year, as well as another diet plan she has read about in the magazines. She is so concerned that I will develop diabetes, or have a heart attack or stroke – such a worrier, God Bless her. She always takes good care of me. I hear through my sources that she has ordered a treadmill, weights, and other exercise equipment that I can use like they have in the gyms. All just a fad, I am sure. I hear she has ordered one of those Apple Smart Watches so I can keep track of how far I am walking in a day, and who knows what else it can do. My, my! Well, anyway, her heart is in the right place, but this exercising sounds like a lot of work. I will need a rest after getting our Christmas deliveries done. So for now, at least, I am safe. But in the New Year, I will have my work cut out for me. Mrs. Claus has put me on several diets over the years, as you all remember, but I just can't seem to get the weight off. In fact., as you know, I have explained to her many times that I have an image to uphold, so I can't really be taking off any weight. Yes, I will admit that I have had some trouble in the past getting stuck in chimneys (and thanks to you elves riding with me who get my bag packed at each child's location, and my dear deer, you have always been able to get me out ok). It has always worked out before, but it looks like 2018 is going to be an all-out assault on my girth. She has now introduced the guilt factor, reminding me of all the obese children in the world, and how much of an incentive it would be for them to lose weight if they saw Santa trimming down.

So we will see what happens then, but for now, there is no time to worry about that. We all have lots of work to do. So, GO, ELVES GO!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! THANKS A LOT!! HO ! HO! HO!

Instructions were studied and we were inspired, In hopes we could manage “Some Assembly Required.”

The children were quiet (not asleep) in their beds, While Dad and I faced the evening with dread: A kitchen, two bikes, Barbie’s town house to boot!

We opened the boxes, my heart skipped a beat….

Then laying the tools away in the chest, We fell into bed for a well-deserved rest.

But I said to my husband just before I passed out, “This will be the best Christmas, without any doubt.

Tomorrow we’ll cheer, let the holiday ring, And not have to run to the store for a thing!

We did it! We did it! The toys are all set For the perfect, most perfect, Christmas, I bet!”

Then off to dreamland and sweet repose I gratefully went, Though I suppose there’s something to say for those self-deluded…

I’d forgotten that batteries are never included!

With Jim White

A Christmas Wish - A Christmas Gift Christian White is an 8-year old boy from Bethlehemburg.

His best friend, Matthew Green, also 8 years old, lives next door.

Christian has had a good 2017, unlike so many others.

His parents, Joseph & Mary White, both have good paying jobs, and so are able to provide the essentials, as well as many frills. They are able to pay for him to play hockey, for example.

He scored the winning goal in the last tournament they were in, and he was voted most valuable player. He received the top grade in his class at school.

They got away on vacation over March break to Whistler, B.C. His parents went skiing, of course, while he had his fun snowboarding. Then in the summer they went to Disney Word in Orlando, Florida, and on the way back home, they got to the Toronto CNE. This fall they got a new car.

In the fall just as school was starting up again, his parents decided to let him get a paper route -- to learn some fiscal responsibility, they claimed, after one day he declared he wanted to get the drone that he had seen at the hardware store in August. That was not an essential, so if he wanted it, he would have to pay for it himself, his parents said. He countered that it would help him at school, especially in science, where he could learn about aerodynamics, and physics. It would also help in his physical prowess, in that it would improve his dexterity as he used the control box.

He used sound reasons, but his parents wouldn't change their minds. So he started putting his paper route money aside in a piggy bank, and by Christmas time, he had nearly saved enough to get it. He calculated that he would be ready to buy it

by March of 2018 On the other hand, the Green family were having a bad year, Matt's father, Luke, had died in a horrific car accident on the County Road between Bethlehemburg and Jeruslehamick back in January, during a bad snow storm. He was coming back from a shopping trip. He had the car loaded up with supplies, which ended up strewn all over the highway and into the ditch where the car ended up. You see, Luke and his wife, Ruth, owned and operated a corner store here in town.

Most of those supplies were for the store. That saved on shipping charges. They had to cut costs wherever they could, and that was one way.

Matt's mother had to take over the store. She was putting in lots of long hours, and with all the expenses of the store and the house both, money was very tight. There was no hockey for him, and no new clothes, toys, school supplies, or any fun treats that she would have liked to get for him this year. There was no vacation either for them. Matt's grade at school was a barely a pass. Ruth didn't drive, so she had no need to replace the car.

The insurance lapsed. She had to cancel the store and house insurance too. Matt helped out

at the store after school some days, stocking shelves or whatever he could do to help out his smother. But he was not able to find any paying job, so it was a rough time in 2017 .

Even their Christmas decoration displays were in contrast.

The White House had stringed lights around their front window, eaves trough, and around the beautiful blue spruce in the centre of the front yard. They also had a huge inflatable Santa near the front door. There was also a huge wreath bought at an expensive gift store in the mall, on the front door.. The Green House,in contrast, had no lights.

Mrs. Green had made her own wreath of Pine branches she and Matt had gathered the previous Sunday, which was placed on the front door. All she had was a couple of candles for the front window.

Both boys were the best of friends, and had been ever since Matt moved into the neighbourhood two years ago. The Whites' have been here about eight years, moving in shortly after Christian was born. Being the same age helped them to bond immediately. They had struck up this tight friendship right from the first day they met, and it was still going strong. Their differences in wealth did not bother them at all. Both have a lot of the same interests too.

They even look a lot alike physically, in that they are both tall and lanky, with dark brown hair.

In fact they are often teased by being called the Bobbsey Twins.

You always see them together.

One day, a week or so before Christmas Day, they were downtown, looking for their mothers' presents. On their way past the hardware store, Christian stopped Matt, and said he wanted to go in and check to see if his drone was still there. On the way in they looked at the bulletin board, and a photo ad caught their attention. It was for a Golden Retriever puppy that was for sale. The ad went on to say the owner was looking for a good home for him – and it would make a great Christmas gift. Matt gazed longingly at the photo, and sighed. “Isn't he adorable! I've always wanted a pet of my own. He would be perfect. Mom says we can't afford it right now, which is true, I guess. I know Dad would have made it happen, if he were still alive. Maybe if I got a paper route like you, I could save enough money by next summer to get one. But it sure would be fun to have a puppy around the house for Christmas to play with. Maybe then my Mom and I would not be so sad about our first Christmas without my Dad. Oh, well, it won't happen, so let's go. I hope your drone is still there.”

Christian heard the sadness in his voice, but was unsure of what to say to his friend, considering how well off he was. “Yes, wouldn't it. That drone is great – I really want it. But I agree, a puppy would be even better to have as a pet to take care of.” He paused briefly, realizing how stupid a thing that was to

say. This was not the time to be competing with Matt. He quickly recovered, though, and continued. “But since this is the only one for sale right now, maybe if we both write a letter to Santa, he will get it for one of us. We could still share him, no matter which one of us Santa delivers him to. We can give Santa the name and phone number that is listed there on the ad. I am sure he could make arrangements to get it from the owner on Christmas Eve on his way to deliver presents here in town, and drop it off at either your house or mine.” “Yes, let's do that,” Matt agreed, although he did not sound too enthusiastic. So to help, Christian added, “Let's get those letters written to Santa as soon as we get home.

Come back to my place, and we can get that done. Mom can drop our letters at the Post Office tomorrow morning on her way to work. That way we should be sure of getting our letters up to the North Pole in time for Santa to make the arrangements, right?” Matt replied, “Yes, sounds great. Let's get this shopping done and get back home then, eh!”, as he punched Christian's shoulder. Christian returned the punch.

They went into the store and checked out the drone. It was still there. They came out empty-handed on their respective mothers' presents. They then went on to other stores.

Christian finally settled on some expensive perfume from the drug store. The clerk called it Chanel No. 5, and she was sure his mother would like it.

Matt ended up buying a pair of gloves from the bargain store.

Then they headed home.

Christian still had one more gift to get – that was for Matt.

He had been racking his brain for weeks, trying to figure it out.

This was the second year that they were going to be exchanging gifts. Last year it had been the John Deere bulldozer and tractor, complete with a wagon to tow around, that he had given to him. His parents paid the $30 for them. That was really when this idea of earning some of his own money began. In turn, Matt had given him two Matchbox cars. Christian knew that they came from their corner store.

But he loved them, and he and Matt played with them in the house all winter, and then outside once it had warmed up enough.

But this year it had been hard – until now. He had been thinking about their earlier conversation about the puppy. Suddenly he knew what he would get Matt.

The next day he went back to the hardware store and got the phone number off the ad.

He rushed back home. Nobody was in yet from work. So he was able to call the owner, explaining what he wanted to do. They made the arrangements to have it delivered to his house on Christmas Eve. Christian also alerted the owner 'that Santa might be calling to pick it up, but please explain what we have arranged here.” (You can just imagine the smile on the owner's face as he received such serious instructions from this boy.) They agreed that he could pay for the puppy at that time. The owner even agreed to donate one bag of food to get him started, espe-

cially after hearing the situation of his friend. As he got off the phone, Christian was thinking, “Yes, this is the season for giving, and what better way to do that. Matt needs a lift now. I can start saving again for that drone in the New Year. I am sure it will still be there next year. Right now, this is more important. I just can't take a chance that Santa won't bring him this puppy. I need to be sure.”

Just about 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve the 'package' arrived, and was put in the back porch. He was in luck as his parents were busy down in the rec room. He hadn't told them what he had done. He really wanted to keep this secret from everyone. Christian handed over his hard-earned money to the owner. He said to Christian as he left, “Good luck. Merry Christmas. You're doing a great thing here,” as he shook his hand. He mumbled, “Thanks.”

He gave the puppy some food to keep him quiet until after supper. He attached a card to the cage. Miraculously the puppy kept quiet for the entire supper hour. While his mother was doing up the dishes, and his father was reading the paper, he sneaked out to the porch, where he picked up the cage & puppy, and put the bag of food on top of the cage. He struggled with the wriggling puppy, who was excited by this time for company. He tried to shush him, but to no avail. He finally got him placed at Matt's side door. He wrapped on the door. As soon as he heard that someone was coming, he quickly dashed back home.

As luck would have it, Matt opened the door. He saw the cage, and heard the puppy whimpering. He looked around to see if he could spot Santa, as he knew he had dropped it off. But not seeing him, he picked up the jiggling cage, with one excited puppy inside, and brought him into the house. He called to his mother, who was in the kitchen preparing a late supper, after closing up the store for Christmas Eve. She saw the cage sitting in the living room, with the cute puppy inside, jumping around for attention.

Matt told her about the delivery.

Then he saw the tag on the side of the cage. He pulled it off, and read what it said: “To Matt - Here is what you requested, along with one bag of food to get you started. Merry Christmas.

From Santa.”

He cried to his mother, “I got my puppy! I knew Santa would come through for me! I know you couldn't afford it. That is why I asked Santa instead. Isn't it great? This is going to be the best Christmas ever!”

His mother replied, with a tear in her eye, that it sure was.

She didn't have the heart to explain all the work and care that it would take. And the cost!

How would they ever afford that? Pulling herself together, she asked him what he was going to name him. Johnny thought about it for a moment, and then replied without any hesitation – CEE DOUBLE U. “Where did you come up with that name so suddenly?' his mother asked. “Oh, that was easy. Christian wanted this puppy too. We both saw him in an ad last week. Since he won't be getting him and I did, it is the

least that I can do to make him feel better. CW for his initials.

In fact, I am going to call him over right now to show him.”

His mother was really holding back her tears now, so she said nothing.

He called Christian. “Can you come over to my house for a minute? I have a surprise for you! I know you were planning to come over later to exchange gifts, but this can't wait!” When he arrived, Matt showed him into the living room, where CW was playing with one of his slippers. And he proclaimed, with a great big smile, “His name is CW, for you! I'm sorry you didn't get your wish. I don't know how Santa decided that I was the one to get him. I know that you wanted him too. I'm so happy. You can come and play with him anytime, of course, just like we agreed.” He went over to CW, and tugged on the slipper to try and get it away from him, and hugged him. Christian simply replied, “You're wrong, Matt. I don't know either how Santa decided, but I did get my wish. Merry Christmas.”

And in all the excitement, Matt almost forgot to give Christian his present (know what it was? I promised him that I wouldn't tell). Christian brought it in and put it under the tree with all the other presents. We'll all know tomorrow morning, when all the presents are opened. And do you know what other gift Christian got for Matt, just so he wouldn't know who really got him the puppy?

It was a ......oops! Can't mention that either, just yet. Tomorrow, though. I can spill the beans then. I'll leave it as a surprise for Christmas Day. You see, I am Christian's Aunt. I am Joe's younger sister, Christina Snow (nee White).

I will be coming tomorrow for Christmas Day. And I have worked for the Greens' at their store for several years, although I have been laid off since September, as she can't continue to pay me. With all the expenses, it just wasn't possible to keep me on. So she has been running the store all by herself.

I have become good friends with Ruth along the way, so we haven't considered ourselves employer and employee for a long time. I have been at their house quite often, especially after Luke's death. This continues even after she let me go at the store. Hey, friends stick together through thick and thin, right, just as families do.!

Matt and I share lots of secrets, including his present for Christian. And Christian has asked me to keep his secrets too, especially about the puppy.

He told me about this tonight, Christmas Eve, when I was over to their place, dropping off my presents..

It is now nearly midnight, December 24, 2017 as I am writing all about this in my diary, so I can remember what Christian did this Christmas.

I just know it is definitely going to be a Merry Christmas for our family, and I pray Matt and Ruth's will be as well. CW should help. And Christian is the reason for it. God Bless Him. As we wrap up another year of stories, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. - Jim

Sir James Dunn Public School

It has been a long standing tradition for Sir James Dunn School staff and students to honor the veterans during a Remembrance Day service held in the gymnasium. This past November 10th the ceremony was started off by a very moving presentation by Mr. Poldmaa, the principal.

He spoke to the audience about his family’s experiences (as teenagers) during the war.

During his talk you could not hear a pin drop.

Each year students write poems and essays to be entered into the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day contest. We thank the Legion for continuing this worthwhile educational learning opportunity. Many students, ranging from ages 8-12 read their poems and essays during the ceremony. Ms. Portis is the organizer of this service and she has each homeroom classroom lay a wreath in remembrance of the sacrifices the soldiers made for our freedom. We thank her for her time and dedication that she puts forth for our staff and students each year.

Wawa EDC Raises $1,250 For Legion Accessibility Jessie Labonte from the Economic Development Wawa designed limited edition Wawa Holiday shirts and local residents loved them!

One-hundred shirts were sold and all profits were donated to the Royal Canadian Legion of Wawa for the Lift for the Legion Accessibility Fundraising Campaign.

The Wawa Legion plans to make the Legion Hall more accessible to enable people with mobility issues to participate in more events and services offered at the Legion Hall. The estimated project cost is around $225,000 to install a lift and accessible washroom. Several granting programs have been applied to, however, the Wawa Legion needs to raise up to $50,000 of the project costs.

Any donations of $50 or more made to support the Legion Accessibility Project will receive an income tax donation receipt from the Municipality of Wawa.

Donations are accepted at the Municipality and several local organizations and residents have made donations such as the Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

The staff at the EDC would like to thank everyone who came out and bought a holiday shirt and supported the Royal Canadian Legion – Wawa Branch 429.

Commitment By Minister To Move Lake Superior Caribou A Good First Step In Correcting MNRF Management Mess

But The Ministry Must Avoid A Half-Measure Response Michipicoten First Nation, ON, December 11, 2017– On Thursday December 7th the Honourable Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Kathryn McGarry announced that they would be acting to preserve the Lake Superior caribou by moving caribou to the Slate Islands.

The Minister’s decision to preserve the last caribou of Lake Superior came after extensive lobbying efforts by Michipicoten First Nation.

In a call with Minister McGarry on December 4th, Michipicoten First Nation Chief Patricia Tangie requested the immediate translocation of caribou from Michipicoten Island to the Slate Islands, as well as to Leach and Montreal Islands.

She also requested a commitment to moving caribou back to Michipicoten Island when it is free of wolves.

These requests were informed by the Precautionary Principle: moving caribou to several islands provides greater insurance for longterm survival through redundancy. Therefore, though the commitment by the Minister to preserve the woodland caribou of Lake Superior is welcome, that commitment cannot be fulfilled by the halfmeasure response of moving some animals to the Slate Islands.

It is very unfortunate that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry

(MNRF) allowed the situation to get to the point where the translocation of caribou is required. Michipicoten First Nation requested the nonlethal removal of the wolves as early as April 10, 2017.

Unfortunately, that option was definitively ruled out in November leaving only two alternatives: • Cull the wolves • Move the caribou It was deemed that the cull of the 15-20 wolves could not be carried out by Michipicoten First Nation due to prohibitive costs and the difficulty of locating all of the wolves without access to their GPS collars, which have been regularly placed on wolves by the MNRF since 2015. The Ministry was not supportive of a cull.

While Chief Tangie looks forward to continuing to work with Minister McGarry on this file, Michipicoten First Nation remains concerned by the MNRF’s management of the land, including caribou and other species at risk.

The ancestors of the citizens of Michipicoten First Nation have a long history of sustainable land management, a regime to which the First Nation aims to return.

Michipicoten First Nation will continue to review the MNRF’s management processes with cautious optimism.

Hockey Player Of The Week - Blake Lavergne

Article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied This week features Blake Lavergne as the hockey player to watch in the future. He is 6 years old studying at Ecole St.Joseph and proudly sports #22 on his timbit shirt as he scopes out the scene in the debut year of his hockey career. He is yet another big fan of Sidney Crosby with the Pittsburgh Penguins and with Blake's eagerness and drive, he will be a great asset to continuing in building our great hockey program in Wawa. He has all the eagerness in what it takes for a star forward player, as he has already mastered the importance of team play in passing the puck, shooting on the goalie and scoring goals.

His best memory so far in his illustrious career is....scoring two goals in one game. I predict that with Blake's grit and determination he will certainly follow Sidney Crosby as a future NHL star.

Wawa minor hockey is taking a "rink breather" for the next two weeks to enable families to celebrate the holidays off ice, but there is lots of hockey to look forward to in the new year.

Peewees Continue To Amaze On & Off Ice

Hockey Canada will be visiting Wawa on Sunday, January 7 to hold a one-day hockey camp.

The cost is $60 for a full day of both on and off ice hockey drills and is open to boys and girls of all abilities from Novice to Bantam age. A Hockey Canada Jersey is included in every registration. To register your player go to Hockeycanada.ca/ skillscamp. It will make a great Christmas gift.

This weekend our Peewee team travelled out-of-town to Timmins and Chapleau for their league games and is continuing in their winning streak - 10-0 and 11-1 against Timmins, and 4-3 and 10-5 against Chapleau.

Novice Travellers played Chapleau here at home but lost both games. The loss will be an incentive to hit the ice in the new year and plan some winning strategies.

The Wawa Peewee Travellers have been working hard on the ice and have recently clinched second place in the Regional Silver Stick tournament in Sudbury this past month which has qualified our local team to now travel and compete at the International level to be held in Port Huron, Michigan January 11-14, 2018. This is a huge accomplishment. Let's join in wishing our Peewee Travellers the best of luck in this competition.

Also our Peewee Travellers comprised of 11-12 year old boys and girls are more than just awesome on the ice, these kids are also developing life-long skills off the ice as the team works together to accomplish monthly "good deeds" in our small rural Monday Night - Men’s community. In September Standings as of Dec. 12th, 2017 the team rallied together to raise funds for cancer joinTeam Points ing the Terry Fox Run. In TERRIS, Tom 5 LESCHISHIN, Mark 4 October the group donated

hockey equipment and welcomed three new players to the Peewee team family. In November the kids competed in a month long "Fitness Challenge" where the players challenged classmates, friends and family to increase their physical fitness regimes and to eat healthier foods.

In December the team, supported by Mission Motors and donning their newly donated "Chevrolet Toques" to keep warm, banded together shovels in hand to cleanout random driveways and walkways in the community.
