Why UArts?

At University of the Arts (UArts), we believe that teaching is an art. No matter the subject that is being taught, great educators need to be creative people. Our Master of Education programs help students hone their skills inside and outside the classroom using creativity as the foundation for study. The faculty at the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE) combines the artistic, enriching approach of the University with empowering guidance. Additionally, President and CEO David Yager draws on decades of work experience in academia, as well as the vision that comes

with being an accomplished visual artist. He is passionate about UArts’ role as a dynamic, creative environment. It is true that our top-level faculty provides a rigorous arts, design or writing education, but to be honest, so do most art schools. UArts is much more: We believe that we are the only arts school in the U.S. that makes it possible to work and collaborate across traditional boundaries with opportunities for collaboration across our unique degrees.

DESIGN

For 140 years, we have been developing innovative creative leaders—because we see you differently. We are more because you are more.

Deepen your expertise on the integration of technology into your classroom. Online Master of Education in Educational Technology 21 MONTHS, 30 CREDITS, AND FULLY ONLINE Through the use of creative technology in the classroom, teachers can set themselves apart as innovators in this rapidly changing world. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers across the world were forced to rethink their relationships with technology and to adapt to new platforms like Zoom, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Classroom. Technical literacy, which has always been a powerful asset in any teacher’s toolkit, has stepped into the spotlight as a make-or-break skill for educators. The online Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Technology from the University of the Arts, and offered by the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE), provides teachers with a unique opportunity to take their understanding of technology’s role in the classroom to the next level. Designed for full-time educators, this online program features strategies that can immediately be applied in your classroom. This program is designed for enhancing your classroom skills while working around your busy schedule. Over the course of 21 months, students will expand their knowledge of web-based technologies, online tools, wearable technologies, apps, iPads, and digital citizenship. They will develop a deeper capacity for navigating digital technology’s constant evolution and the risks and rewards this presents for teachers and students alike. As a graduate of the program, you will be better equipped to creatively integrate new technologies into your classroom. Completion of an MEd or Master’s degree can lead to salary increases and can prepare teachers to move into formal positions as leaders in technology.

Program Format The Basics

Capstone Project

The MEd in Educational Technology program is a fully online program that takes 21 months to complete. It is comprised of 30 credit hours and 9 online classes. This program offers many advantages for students, but some of the highlights include:

The program culminates with a capstone project, where students will focus on a problem that they are currently seeing or experiencing in their own classrooms. They will choose one of three pathways:

+ A small cohort with individualized attention + Application-based, hands-on learning + Project-based classes + Collaboration with students across degrees + Elective courses that allow students to tailor their study to personal goals

+ curriculum Build and design an in-depth curriculum that will focus on the problem of practice.

+ action research Address the problem of practice head on in the classroom. Use research skills to collect the baseline information, implement an intervention of some kind, then collect follow-up data and analyze it. + research Engage in a traditional research project that collects large-scale data but does not include an intervention. Examine a bigger dataset than the individual classroom.

DESIGNING 21ST CENTURY LEARNING

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION USING

ENVIRONMENTS

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

This core course provides educators with an understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges technology brings to the design of teaching and learning environments. The course examines micro and macro learning environments and what, in particular, makes learning environments successful. Though not a technology course per se, certain digital tools will be explored, demonstrated and tested to exemplify the vast possibilities available for teaching and learning across multiple settings. Focus on collaboration, accessibility, motivation and authentic learning as key to the design of modern learning environments.

Current research on the use of technology in the classroom concludes that appropriate use can yield dramatic gains in both student achievement and student engagement. This core course will help build the case for, and will prepare educators to routinely use, technology in the classroom to effectively reach and engage diverse learners. Educators will learn how to identify and optimize educational technology tools, resources and applications that best match unique student populations.

ETEC 601

This core course is designed to help educators identify, understand and formulate practical solutions for ethical issues involving technology in today’s classroom. Issues such as protection of private property (copyright, plagiarism), freedom of speech/First Amendment and equality/access, among others, will be studied in light of the philosophies of Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill and René Descartes. Constructing learning environments that imbue K-12 students with the critical thinking skills required to help shape a code of ethics in a tech-infused world will be emphasized.

INTEGRATING EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY INTO STUDENT ASSESSMENTS Today’s educators are met with the continuous challenge of ensuring that every student reaches proficiency across core content areas. The ability to gain and sustain student engagement is central to this goal. With an increased interest and reliance on technology among students, the use and thorough understanding of technology as a learning tool is an increasingly important part of an educator’s arsenal. The Integrating Educational Technology into Student Assessment course prepares today’s educators to infuse technology into assessment design, implementation and analysis. Educators will come away from this course with the ability to successfully identify as well as facilitate the integration of educational technology into the classroom and understand how to optimize educational technology to assess student achievement.

RESEARCH METHODS

CAPSTONE PROJECT: MASTER OF

This course is designed to prepare educators to engage in the essential aspects of research that are needed for successful completion of the research-based writing project during their final culminating course: Capstone Project: Master of Education. Research Methods, represents the first of two courses designed to take students through the process of completing the final capstone project. Students successfully completing this course will have selected a research topic; produced a well-developed research statement and/or research questions; completed an in-depth investigation of scholarly literature related to their topic and complementary theoretical frameworks; prepared an outline of the proposed research methodology; and drafted a project prospectus to present to the Capstone Committee and advisor, who is selected by the student from the approved list of faculty, toward the end of the semester. Students will complete the first two of five chapters required for the Capstone Project (whether it is a research paper, action research project, or curriculum project).

EDUCATION The Capstone Project course serves as a culminating experience for educators enrolled in MEd programs at University of the Arts. This capstone course ties together the sum of the MEd coursework taken in the program and offers educators the choice of completing one of three projects, according to educator interest and utility in the educator’s classroom, school or district. Options include: (1) A curriculum project. (2) A research project. (3) An action research project. Educators will work closely with a capstone advisor and committee, including a field expert and members of the University faculty, and defend their final submission before the committee.
