We’re all making the transition back into anatomy and physiology. So, to ease the stress and color your daily life at Alfaisal as a future doctor, I am pleased to present to you with the first College of Medicine newsletter, “Med Times!”

The News Debut!

■ It is the honor of the College of Medicine to bring forth the production of our first newsletter which will be the channel illustrating the activities and news within our College through students, faculty, and the Alfaisal University as a whole.

Our newsletter is anticipated to be released on a monthly basis throughout the academic calendar, compiling a variety of issues around our College of Medicine.

The newsletter will be highlighting the developments and advancements within our College such as, our achievements, medical education programs, upcoming events, recent faculty recruitment activity, accreditations, broadcast our strategic and academic plans, curriculum and syllabus status. This newsletter will focus on all

student affairs such as student assessment, student development programs, their feedback, the social and sport activities. Besides, it will also provide useful links and contact and grow into the link uniting our college with our affiliated partners; such as Partners Harvard Medical International and their recent communications and feedback, as well as King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center to emphasize the accomplishments and immense efforts being put forth in the growth of our institution.

This newsletter will also deliver our image and news to local and international universities keeping us under focus and maintaining a continuous bond. Finally I would like to show my gratitude to the entire team for helping in creating this newsletter. ■

■ I am greatly enthused and honored to be the newsletter representative and liaison of the Alfaisal College of Medicine family. I am pleased to present to you with the first College of Medicine newsletter!

Debuting on an ideal date of January 2009, the College of Medicine newsletter, Med Times, will Insha'Allah offer a wide variety of features that will enable all to fulfill their writing desires and incorporate their character into what will hopefully mark the beginning of our educational journey. From news and updates on the curriculum, to personal articles, photo galleries, and miscellaneous studentcentered categories, Med Times will cover all!

Not only will the newsletter provide the physical embodiment of our memories for the years to come, but also allow one to share their unique written voice. Be it a poem, short story, or opinion.

An independent newsletter from that of the university's, the College of Medicine newsletter will also provide up-to -date news on medical related issues globally and specifically on King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center.

A network for our faculty and student body, the newsletter will be published at the start of every month with input from as many as possible, INCLUDING YOU! Please keep in mind that the newsletter is ours to manipulate and mold to our liking in order to further better the college by sharing, communicating, and writing. If you ask me what the main point is of having a newsletter, then I would answer you that it is to voice yourself.

Representatives Express Further

■ Medical Student Association: Abdulhadi AlAmoudi, Ayman Mohamed, Bara AlMakadma, Mohanad Abusaleh, Mohammed Khusheim, Ammar Awaad, and Sadek Obeidat ■ The Medical Student Association (MSA) is made up of seven students from the College of Medicine. Each bringing their own color to the mix, the representatives hold specific tasks to adhere to, all for the sake of the students. As such, this committee was formed by the students and for the students to begin with.

I highly recommend that students communicate with us on a constant level in order to attend to their needs and inquiries. All contact information can be found at the back, better yet, please feel free to speak to us in person.

On the last week prior to our ten day Hajj holiday, we made presentations to introduce ourselves and show what we had to offer and what input we need from you. Especially important was the hard work of the assessment representative, Abdulhadi AlAmoudi, who provided more than adequate revision material of the curriculum we took up to the exam. A special thanks to him and his efforts!

supplied students with surveys to fill out concerning the first midterm exam, seeing that feedback regarding our academic life is of high priority.

Also, the faculty was very constructive and helpful throughout data gathering and generating the results.

Hopefully all were satisfied with the outcome of the test and that the survey reflects all that which is positive about the exam and college.

Overall, if there was one thing that you could get from all this, is that we only represent the College of Medicine and that the true Medical Student Association is all of us.

At the end, the Dean, Dr. Khalid Kattan, gave us his input on the overall scheme of the MSA and that it is set into good motion. He also added a few words of encouragement in that he has high expectations of all the students and that everyone will Insha’Allah be successful throughout the years to come.

■ As I witness Med-Time's first issue emerge to life, it's my pleasure to introduce myself through it to all my beloved brothers and colleagues reading these lines. I am Ayman Mohamed Awad, MSA's president. I am an 18 year old Sudanese that was born and raised in KSA. I graduated from Alfaisalia Privet School in 2007. Then I was blessed to enter and graduate from KFF's UPP in 2008.I was honored by my great colleagues to be the Medicine Students President. It became very obvious to me since the first day being MSA's first president is much more than a luxury, it is in fact a real responsibility. But I assure all those who believed in me and offered me their trust, that I will not let you down.

As the president, my job is to present and lead the medical students. It's my responsibility to make sure that their journey in Alfaisal's Medical College is an enjoyable and rewarding one.

Making a change towards the better future is the ultimate goal that I am aiming to achieve.

However, I will need your help and cooperation along with the MSA members; your participation in our different activities and your continues advice and support. So let us all join hand to hand in order for us to draw a brighter future together.

■ It is my pleasure to be representing the student body in the College of Medicine in curriculum affairs. I know the students are not going to be the ones who make the curriculum, but that is not what I am elected to this position for. The idea is that I’m hoping that through this position we can keep the students aware that they have a say.

After all, we did not set the curriculum (which we should not), but we can help the experts modify it to what is going to be most beneficial for us, and even easier and smoother for our professors. The task is not easy, but if we can meet our objectives in the different fields that the "Medical Student Association" (MSA) is trying to meet, we hopefully are going to have it better.

Be sure to ask me if you need any help regarding the curriculum and the way it is presented, because we can always keep our staff informed of what we see is right, and learn from them why or why not it is right or wrong. Thus we can build a community that is interactive not only in medical-related concepts, but in all the issues of our stay in university. Let's all work together to keep you updated about your lectures, your time tables, and anything concerning the materials we are studying.

■ Now that you have made the choice for the assessment committee students’ representative, my challenge is to make a change through you.

Our goal is to ensure that this change will happen. In short, my role on the assessment committee occurs mainly before the exam as well as after. Before every exam I will orient you and give you the complete picture about the exam, and after the exam I will take your feedbacks and your impressions, and discuss them with the assessment committee’s boss, Dr. Paul Ganguly.

Your role is to cooperate with me in order to achieve our goal which is “making a change”, not only at the College of Medicine level, but also at the entire university level.

I am a graduate from Dar Al Fikr schools in Jeddah; I was added to the dean’s list in the UPP last year. I have been involved in many committees such as: Financial committee, graduation ceremony committee and sport committee. I act as vice Imam of Othamn Bin Affan Mosque in Jeddah as well as the official Imam of Alfaisal University. My graduation research was on reading as I was considered to be as the first best research among my colleagues in the secondary school.

■ My name is Mohanad Abusaleh. I am the sport representative of the College of Medicine. I graduated from Riyadh Al-Saleheen School and I believe that sport is a very essential part student life. The whole purpose behind medicine is to sustain someone’s health.

Hence, sport, as you know, plays a major role in upholding that principle; it strengthens the muscles, enhances respiration and improves heart rate. Moreover, sport is very important in building student character.

I am planning on making soccer tournaments, swimming, table-tennis competitions and many other projects. However, I am here to represent you. I am here to listen to your ideas. I need your help, I need your support and I need your participation. I need you to tell me what you want. If you have any plans or suggestions related to sports, please contact me. ■ Asalaamu Alaikum, To all of my colleagues and respected faculty and administration, I am Sadek Obeidat, your student representative of the Social Committee for the academic year of 2008-2009. The purpose of the Social Committee is to make this year as productive and enjoyable as possible. As a student body, it is up to us to make these few years memorable, through not only our academic success, but also through our impact on the society and the events which will build stronger bonds between us as students. This will be done through a multitude of extra-curricular activities such as; • • • •

A Harvard Med Strategy ■ On behalf of my colleagues at Harvard Medical International (HMI), I would like to share with you our excitement about our collaboration with Alfaisal University in the creation of the new university and especially the new College of Medicine.

HMI was founded by Harvard University in 1994 in order to work with academic and healthcare institutions in the creation of educational and healthcare programs and ■ Dr. H.Thomas Aretz institutions such that all citizens of the Global Programs Vice world would have access to education and President healthcare at a world-class level without having to leave their homes and countries. HMI has worked with its partners on over 50 projects in more than 30 countries creating programs and institutions meeting global quality standards, but being mindful of local needs and cultures. Rather than transplanting existing programs, HMI has worked with its partners to create unique solutions suited for their specific needs.

About a year ago, HMI began working with Alfaisal University in the planning and implementation of the educational programs for the medical faculty and its buildings and systems. To date, Alfaisal and HMI have worked on governance issues, policies and procedures, curriculum development and the development of state-of-the-art facilities.

The first annual joint faculty development program for the medical faculty of Alfaisal University will take place in the first week of March.

During the program, Alfaisal and HMI faculty will work on the details of the first years of the curriculum, the teaching and assessment strategies and the development of teaching materials for the new curriculum.

Future programs will work on later portions of the curriculum, especially clinical and research training.

Over the next six to eight years, the curriculum will be further developed and refined, and it will be implemented year by year, and scaled up as the class size will grow. Facilities will be completed including the creation of a state-of-the-art clinical skills and simulation center, allowing for the technical support necessary for a modern medical and health sciences curriculum.

‫ب له مؤرخوا‬ ‫لقد انتشرت لغة العرب عبر التاريخ انتشاراً َع ِج َ‬ ‫أوروبا أنفسھم‪ ،‬يقول المؤرخ الفرنسي إرنست رنان‪" :‬اللغة العربية‬ ‫بدأت فجأة على غاية الكمال وھذا أغرب ما وقع في تاريخ البشر‪،‬‬ ‫فليس لھا طفولة وال شيخوخة"‪ ،‬ويقول العالم األلماني فريتاغ ‪":‬اللغة‬ ‫العربية أغنى لغات العالم"‪ .‬ھذا على مستوى المؤرخين والمفكرين‬ ‫أما على مستوى شباب الغرب فحدث وال حرج‪ .‬لقد مضى على‬ ‫العربية زمان وخاصة بعد فتح األندلس كان شباب أوروبا يفاخرون‬ ‫بتعلمھا كما يفاخر بعض شبابنا اليوم بإتقانه للغة أجنبية مع أنه أزھد‬ ‫ما يكون بلغته األم‪.‬‬ ‫في الواقع لم تحتل العربية ھذه المكانة العليا إال لما اختصت به من‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ور ُد ھنا نقطتين على سبيل‬ ‫ميزات فضلتھا على لغات العالم ‪ ،‬وأ ِ‬ ‫المثال ال الحصر‪:‬‬ ‫أوال‪ :‬اللغة العربية تملك أوسع مدرج صوتي عرفته اللغات وتتفرد‬ ‫ببعض األصوات كالضاد‪ .‬فالناطق بالعربية يستطيع نطق أي صوت‬ ‫حرفي من أي لغة أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫ثانيا‪ :‬إن تشابه ألفاظ الكلمات العربية مرتبط بالتشابه في المعاني‬ ‫والمدلوالت فمثال‪ :‬سمي القلب قلبا ألنه يتقلب بين الحزن والسعادة‪،‬‬ ‫وسمي المال ماالً ألنه يميل – ينتقل‪ -‬من شخص آلخر‪ ،‬وھكذا‪...‬‬ ‫وبما أن اللغة العربية ھي لغة القرآن ومعجزة اإلسالم الخالدة وبسبب‬ ‫ما تتميز به على باقي اللغات‪ ،‬فإن العربية تعرضت ومازالت‬ ‫تتعرض لھجوم شرس من أعداء األمة تارة ومن بعض أبنائھا الجھلة‬ ‫تارة أخرى‪ .‬ولكنھا صمدت وستبقى صامدة ألن ; تعالى تكفل‬ ‫بحفظھا عندما تعھد بحفظ كتابه العربي‬ ‫الذ ْك َر َوإِ َّنا َل ُه َل َحاف ُ‬ ‫))إِ َّنا َنحْ نُ َن َّز ْل َنا ِّ‬ ‫ون((‬ ‫ِظ َ‬ ‫]الحجر‪[٩ :‬‬

‫سبب التسمية‪:‬‬ ‫إنه من الواضح للعيان أن األمة اإلسالمية اليوم في وضع ال تحسد عليه‪ ،‬وكلنا‬ ‫متفقون على أھمية التغيير ولكن كيف السبيل إلى ھذا التغيير ؟ إن وضع المسلمين‬ ‫لن يتغير إلى األفضل حتى يتغيروا من الداخل ‪ .‬ومن ھنا لم نجد خيراً من كتاب‬ ‫; تعالى لنستخرج منه شعاراً لمجلتنا و ‪ -‬بتوفيق ;‪ -‬قررنا أن يكون شعارنا‪:‬‬ ‫"حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسھم"‪.‬‬ ‫رسالتنا‪:‬‬ ‫إن الھدف كما يبدو من شعارنا ھو التغيير لألفضل بدأً بأنفسنا‪ .‬وعلى ھذا ستكون‬ ‫مقاالت ھذه المجلة ممتعة وجذابة وثورية تركز على المواضيع التي تنفع الشاب‬ ‫المسلم في دينه ودنياه وتقربه من اللغة العربية أكثر فأكثر‪ ،‬بحيث تكون ھذه المجلة‬ ‫بذرة للنھوض بأمتنا بإذن ; تعالى‪.‬‬ ‫لماذا "العربية" ؟‬ ‫ألننا نحاول الدفاع عن لغة القرآن التي لم تزل تتعرض للھجمات المتتالية من‬ ‫الداخل والخارج‪.‬وألننا نرغب بأن يكون خريج جامعة الفيصل للعربية فخورا بھا‪،‬‬ ‫و يصنع النموذج المثالي الذي يحتذى به نحو رفعة الوطن واألمة‪ .‬وھذا ال‬ ‫يتعارض أبدا مع ضرورة إتقانه للغات األخرى كاإلنجليزية‪.‬‬ ‫لمن نكتب ‪:‬‬ ‫ھذه المجلة حاليا ً موجھة لطالب ومنسوبي الفيصل عموماً‪ ،‬ومن ثم ‪-‬إن شاء ;‪-‬‬ ‫ستكون موجھة لكل مسلم يتقن العربية ويؤمن بالتغيير‪.‬‬ ‫رؤيتنا‪:‬‬ ‫الحلم حق لكل إنسان ونحن ‪-‬مع أننا في بداية الطريق‪ -‬لنا أحالمنا أيضا ً والتي‬ ‫تتضمن‪:‬‬ ‫‪ (١‬إنشاء نسخة الكترونية لــ ‪Náè Ðãdi@bß@aë Ìí@óny‬‬ ‫‪ (٢‬ترجمة المقاالت المميزة للغات أخرى كاإلنجليزية ‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٣‬إيصال صوتنا إلى خارج الفيصل وربما خارج المملكة‪.‬‬

December 5, 2008 From Norway - According to research in the Archives of Disease in Childhood, taking folic acid during pregnancy may increase the risk of respiratory illness in infants. In a study of over 32,000 children, researchers found that the offspring of women who had taken folic acid supplements during the first three months of pregnancy had a 24% increased risk of admission to hospital due to respiratory infection in the first 18 months of life.

December 10, 2008 From Washington - According to the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, heart disease will be surpassed by cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide by 2010. Experts have estimated that 12.4 million people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year, and 7.6 million will die. In men, the most common form is lung cancer, while breast cancer is the most pervasive form among women.

December 12, 2008 From Illinois - According to research in the journal Psychology and Aging, video games may improve cognitive function in the elderly. In a study of 40 older adults, researchers found that those assigned to play a strategy-based video game for nearly 24 hours, spread out over the course of 4 to 5 weeks, showed improved performance in task switching, working memory, visual short-term memory and reasoning, compared to those who did not play video games.
