Their Royal Highnesses Visit the College of Medicine

■

■ Their royal Highnesses visited the College of Medicine late December 2008 and toured the majority of our classes, facilities and labs. They truly are our great leaders as they have full heartedly expressed their acknowledgement and contentment regarding our college and what it has to offer, especially towards the students themselves.

The first note his royal highness Prince Khaled AlFaisal bin AbdulAziz AlSaud mentioned was that “[he] wished that such a capable educational foundation existed fifty years ago.”

Due to their kind deeds and hard work, their royal highnesses brought Alfaisal University into existence, let alone the College of Medicine. As such, they clearly showed how proud they were to see all of it come together into action.

His royal highness Prince Khaled AlFaisal AlSaud was also kind enough to answer a few questions myself, the newsletter Representative, the MSA President, and the Assessment Representative were eager to ask. (Continued on page 2)

MSA President, Ayman Awad, and myself, the Newsletter Representative, asked his royal highness on what he had in mind for the future of Alfaisal and the outcome he expects to see. His royal highness, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prince Khaled AlFaisal answered that he wants Alfaisal University to “be the most refined university , not only in Saudi Arabia, but also internationally and on par with American and European universities .”

His Royal Highness also articulately mentioned that he wants students that graduate from Alfaisal to adhere to “international” and “humanitarian” issues, not just within Saudi Arabia. Further, his royal highness mentioned that this university’s existence and services are for the students and that as students, we “must make use of all what this university has to offer.” His highness concluded that as students, we “must invest all into knowledge.”

Golden words from a wise leader. Truly, thank you for all your royal highnesses.

Appreciation and thanks must be given to the Dean, Prof.

Khaled Al-Kattan, for allowing the students to be placed in the spotlight and give and take with their highnesses. Allowing us to feel as one unit and portray ourselves as the Alfaisal family that we are, the Dean wants the College of Medicine to be student-centered through and through.

Overall, we are honored to have our leaders visit us and show their acceptance to what we are doing. Hopefully, we will achieve even higher goals and greater success throughout to make them even more proud so that they may visit us more often. As future doctors and the reason why the College of Medicine came to be, we must work hard and adhere to what his highness mentioned. ■

The First MSA Financial Representative!

■ It is a great honor for me to have this opportunity to speak as the first financial representative in the Medical Student Association (MSA). When I first thought about this position, I didn’t want to take it because our prophet –peace be open him- said that Allah loves it when a person does something, he does it perfectly. I was worried about the time that I’m going to dedicate to this new challenge. But thanks to Allah, I realized that I am a part of a supportive and amazing family, the MSA. My goal as a financial representative is to do what it takes to provide all other representatives with financial assistance so that we can reach, hopefully, all the goals that we aim for. Another aspect that I’m willing to look into is to make sure that MSA has its own budget, by having a monthly and annual settled income. As such, I’m eager to work on the ideas that I’m going to collect from my colleagues, respectful faculties, and helpful admissions. Feedback is important, as it will always allow us to develop what was done right and fix what made us stumble. I can see the day when people ask about us and know that we are the first year medical students, the guys who made a difference and made a change. I ask that we all work faithfully and most importantly work together.■

Supporting Gaza during Iftar

■ On January 6, 2009, or in other words, “Ashoura”, when Allah the most merciful forgives all sins of a previous year given that one fasts on that blessed day, an Iftar was held in the glorious King Faisal Palace. An optimistic and social event prepared by the MSA, faculty and staff, the iftar involved students from the UPP and other colleges too.

The gist of this joyful gathering was to honor and express our support to our brothers and sisters in Gaza, Palestine not only financially but spiritually as well, may Allah be with them. To begin with, Sadeq Obeidat, social representative, introduced the event with his highly articulate speech and informed all on the outline of the iftar.

Further, Hani Alturkmani and Abdullah Alshammary rehearsed and presented beautiful poetic writings expressing the point of the view of Palestinians. Plus, Mohammed Razaz from the College of Engineering delivered a heartwarming speech giving advices on how we can help our brothers and sisters in Gaza by praying, donating, and comprehending the situation as a whole.

A special thanks to everyone who participated for acting as the glue that orchestrated the entire event and made it a successful and amazing gathering..

In the end, such an event was truly one to cherish as it not only represented one of Alfaisal’s goals; expressing support and understanding towards our brothers and sisters elsewhere, but also shows the essence of Alfaisal as a whole when its entire family comes together in order to acknowledge one another for a greater good. ■

■

Volunteer Debut with the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association ■ In mid-January 2009, the College of Medicine students were able to apply as volunteers in different fields concerning the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association. Almost half our student body applied and are more than willing and enthused to participate within a medical setting to help those with Alzheimer’s.

Volunteers will be divided into teams and adhere to specific tasks from generating more awareness concerning the disease, orchestrating events, acting as translators, and receptionists for guests, patients and the public.

Overall, 39 students were accepted from King Saud University and Alfaisal University. However, the majority of students volunteers came from the latter.

Considered as a beneficial extra-curricular activity, volunteering will help further teamwork and understanding one another. Such activities are vital as it will strengthen the bond between us as future doctors in order to gain that which cannot be gained from books, experience.

Not only will this help one to become familiar within a medical background and therefore better themselves as future doctors, but also allow on to grow as a person and gain more than just an academic background. ■

Med Times Reaches Out for Success

■ On January 27, 2009, an outstanding event was held at the King Faisal Palace involving all the Alfaisal Family. Students from all colleges, the UPP, faculty, and administrative officers were all present for the grand three hour gathering. Gracing us with their visit, the Board of Trustees as well as the well-known Prof. Michael Porter, who was the main attraction of the event, expressed his view about Alfaisal as being the hallmark that will take this society into the future with knowledge in hand in order to adhere to universal dilemmas, especially, as Prof. Porter highlighted, economic crises .

The gathering involved a wonderful reception, a unique dinner, a beautiful hall, Alfaisal leadership, followed by a grand speech by the professor himself. When interviewed, the well articulate guest stated that the economic crisis in the US occurred due to subprime loans given out by banks to people that could not pay it back. Further, he mentioned that a “chain reaction” of losses occurred on most banks due to the shared mortgages between them. Thus, the crisis affected all and on a huge scale due to the magnitude of losses.

In terms of us medical students and our contribution, Abdulhadi Alamoudi, Assessment Representative, beautifully recited verses from the glorious Quran as the opening of the event took place. Further, Bara Almakadma, Curriculum Representative, posed an interesting question to professor Porter after his speech. Bara asked about the link between economy and knowledge as mentioned in the professor’s speech, to which the professor replied to as being a “philosophical question.”

The best part of it all was that Med Times made its way to most of the Board of Trustees as well professor Porter himself. Positive feedback and praises were the theme of replies that was received from the respected highnesses and the brilliant professor, more so due to the MSA President Ayman Awad’s determination to get Med Times to those respected leaders to begin with.

For a first issue thats existence was no more than three weeks, I would say Med Times is on its right way to success, carrying with it the pride of the

■

Eye Visions Cheat!

■ In “How Blind Are We” by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran − professor of neurosciences in the University of California, San Diego, and director of the Center for Brain and Cognition− and Diane Roger-Ramachandran − also a professor at the psychology department at the University of California−, the authors mainly discuss the phenomenon that we do not take notice of everything we set our eyes upon. The authors express this situation as “Change Blindness” or “Inattentional Blindness.”

Using several experiments to aid their topic, such as the gorilla experiment, (A gorilla walks through the players of a basketball game while the viewers are concentrating very hard on the game, 50 percent of the people don’t notice the gorilla!.) , the authors explain the reason and the process of this phenomenon.

The article states that when experiencing something in a certain theme, and something else interrupts it, the brain does not want to mess the harmony of the scene, so it automatically deletes the anomalous effect from the conscious, and simply, notice is not taken (Ramachandran, sciam.com).

So, as the Ramachandrans stated, “We have eyes, yet we do not see.” The authors presented their idea in a very persuasive way. First, being medical related professors (neurosciences and psychology) gives the article credibility to some point. Also, what really boosts the credibility of the article is that the Ramachandrans supported their views with various studies, experiments and examples. For instance, there is the gorilla study conducted by two professors in the University of Illinois and Harvard University, the spot the difference game, the red cross experiment and many more. The authors state, “The gorilla experiment is the culmination of a long line of related studies on attention and vision that began more than three decades ago.”

However, there is a tiny error in the article which is that the authors forgot to mention any background information for the reader about themselves. But, despite this simple flaw, the efforts stated in the article indicate that the topic is getting more and more acceptance. Also, all the studies which are mentioned in the article can assure the reader that the academic information in the article is not to be underestimated. ■

■ My chaste soul used to enjoy there again… and again.

I don't feel her.

What if I am a living body?

I don't know what to do if I have no will, or no me.

Help!

Maybe it's not true. Yes, I do have a spirit.

Soon, I will do what I want. I exist so I will be…

I am not cunning a soul; I will ruminate upon my genuine me.

Do I have an idiosyncratic existence?

I am wondering; about what? I am answering…

Do you agree? I don't; I am by myself in us.

No, it is true. What I expected is not what I hoped.

Help! I have ideas, dreams, likes and dislikes.

Help.

Still, I do not know what are mine which aren't ours.

I hear the unspoken: help.

The torn soul can examine the else's inane psyche.

The other is in pain, keeping him alive.

He is speculating; she is imagining.

The other is still confident and realistic!

Can he read me? No, he SEES me.

We are a translucent, encrypted book – impenetrable?

He laughs out of me.

She commands through us.

Help, out of the other's foolishness… confusion.

I am aware of him; more is disastrous.

The other is deserting voluntary – will is not simple but clear to us.

■ Alslam Alikom, Dear brothers and sisters reading theses lines, it is my pleasure to be talking to you through the second issue of Med Times after the great success of its first issue. I would like to congratulate all the Med Times team for their successes ,their great efforts and continuous coverage to MSA and Alfaisal’s activities. The thanks are also extended to our caring administration, our beloved faculty and staff, and our dear students for their participation in our different activities and events and for their continuous support.

As part of MSA’s continuous efforts to keep our leading status, it is my pleasure to announce that we are working on MSA’s strategic plan for the upcoming five years. The results of these efforts will be released soon Insha’Allah, along with the final draft of MSA’s constitution. I would also like to announce that we in MSA have just started, and the future will reveal, not to Alfaisal only but to the community as a whole, a lot of our coming surprises. ■

■ What is the importance of keeping track of your curriculum affairs? As a student I can understand that marks are very important for me. Of course that means that I would be thinking of curriculum affairs from that aspect; in terms of what is good for me, what is easier and what is the most beneficial for me. That means collective efforts between curriculum and the assessment representatives, such as in an organization, the surveys given to you, and in the CD project before. Also, future cooperation should be made, tt is also important to realize that if you understand how your curriculum is built, then that will benefit you in terms of marks, as well as it will make your learning process more enjoyable, as it becomes easier, because you would then understand how to approach it.

Besides that, I would like to request from you to please send me on my email any concerns you have about the material, and the subjects, or even the professors (as some of them welcome your criticism and comments, and have asked me for it). Your concerns will also help me formulate my future surveys, which are important for all of us, and for our faculty. Along with the assessment, social, and development representatives, as well as the rest of MSA, we will be able to achieve both our goal of making a difference in the university and having an enjoyable experience, as well as help all of us collectively to perform better. On that note, I am proud to say that the students I met in Alfaisal are the best student body I have ever been with. I feel more obligated to do my best in the position of responsibility you have given me, so help me. ■

■ Assalamu Alaikom all, First of all, we finished our first and second mid-term exams and I hope that everyone is satisfied with their achievements during this semester. Now we are much closer to the final exam which is of greater importance. Therefore, I would like you to look forward rather than look backward. MSA's president, the curriculum representative and I will be taking care of your complaints and your suggestions regarding the second mid-term. Also, soon we will tell you how the whole final GPA will be calculated along with the core courses.

In addition, I would like to remind you of the presentation that will be done on the10th and 11th of February which will be counted as 5 % of you grade. Another important thing is the professional skills exam on the 10th of February. Further, you still have to write your final English paper that is due on the 7th of February and will be counted as 20%. Finally, if you have any ideas or concerns, feel free to call or send me an email. I wish you all the best and good achievements on your finals. Also, Please note that there will be an interactive program called “Moodle” that will be available next semester, I will fill you in on what it will involve once all is in place. ■

■ Dear Alfaisal medical students, Throughout the last month, I have been trying to achieve what I have promised you before. I am very pleased to announce that the Diplomatic Quarter Sport Complex will be available for those who sign up for membership as early as the first week of February 2009. I hope you enjoy the sport facilities there as it is of high quality and service. Now that we have both the Diplomatic Quarter and the sport complex provided by Alfaisal University, I hope that sport becomes a definite part of your lives.

■ Asalaamu Alaikum, First of all, Thank you all for your participation in the Iftar and your support for Gaza, we hope to hold similar events as this in the near future. Although the events this semester have been few, Insha’Allah there will be many more to come in the second semester. A heads up to all students, the MSA plans to hold a class Umra trip after our final exam for this semester. We would like your feedback and continuous comments and ideas on how you feel we can make the coming semester an exciting one. ■ This month I have a very precise and important message directed mainly to the students, myself included. Over the past few months there has been a sharp increase in complaints from both my fellow students and faculty about the lack of respect in the classrooms. Our failure to show respect inside the classroom is inexcusable and downright embarrassing. Some of the complaints brought forth include the level of high noise in the classroom and lack of both attention and attendance.

The majority of students who attend classes are there to learn, but the background noise is annoyingly distracting. It should not take Prof. Khraibi to babysit our classes to stop students from side talking and signing in for their friends. Our university has made the effort to attract some of the most qualified professors and physicians from around the world to mold us into world-class doctors. Therefore, it is extremely rude to be talking in their lectures or even worse not showing up. In the end, they do not lose anything; we are. As the first medical batch, we are supposed to set an exemplary reputation, but unfortunately, our actions are only creating a negative impression, which affects the class as a whole. As a fellow student I urge you not to waste your parents’ hard-earned money, our professors’ valuable time, and most importantly your future and your friend’s future.■

‫■ ﺍﺳﺘﻔﺘﺎﺀ ﺍﻟﻌﺪﺩ‬ ‫■أقام فريق تحرير "حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسھم" استفتاء شارك فيه ‪ ٨٦‬شخص من طالب وإداريي و ھيئة‬ ‫تدريس الفيصل و برنامج اإلعداد الجامعي )‪(UPP‬حول تجاربھم وآرائھم عن أحداث غزة األخيرة ‪ .‬نعرض‬ ‫لكم ھنا أھم نتائجه ‪:‬‬ ‫المحور األول‪ :‬ماذا كنت تشاھد أثناء الحرب ؟‬ ‫أظھرت النتائج أن حوالي ‪ ٪ ٧٩‬من األشخاص الذين شاركوا في االستفتاء كانوا يشاھدون األخبار أكثر من‬ ‫برامج التلفاز األخرى ‪ ،‬بينما بلغت نسبة الذين شاھدوا المنوعات والرياضة بشكل أكبر حولي ‪. ٪ ٢١‬‬ ‫وإن دل ھذا على شيء فإنما يدل على اھتمام ھؤالء األشخاص والشريحة التي يمثلونھا بھذه القضية‪.‬‬ ‫المحور الثاني‪ :‬ھل تعتقد أننا قمنا بالواجب ؟‬ ‫أوضحت الدراسة أن ما يقارب ‪ ٪٥٠‬يعتقدون أن ما قدمته األمة وما قدموه ھم لغزة لم يكن كافيا على‬ ‫اإلطالق ‪.‬بينما ‪ ٪٤٠‬يعتقدون أنھم فعلوا شيئا على الرغم أنه لم يكن كافيا ‪.‬والبقية يرون أن األمة قدمت ما‬ ‫عليھا وھم كذلك‪ .‬وھنا يجب أن نتساءل‪ :‬ربما لسنا نحن من يتحكم بأفعال األمة ولكن ألسنا نحن من يتحكم‬ ‫بأفعالنا !؟ فيا ترى ما السبب وراء ھذا التقصير تجاه إخواننا ؟ ■‬

‫■عندما فكرت بموضوع ھذه المقالة لم أجد خيراً من معلم البشرية –صلى " عليه‬ ‫و سلم‪ -‬ملھما ً و ھاديا ً و مرشداً لي و لك‪ ،‬و ھو خير ما تبدأ به سير العظماء و‬ ‫قصص الحكماء‪ ،‬صلى " عليه و على آله و صحبه أتم التسليم‪:‬‬ ‫نسبه الشريف ‪: :‬و محمد بن عبد " بن عبد المطلب بن ھاشم بن قصي بن‬ ‫كالب ‪ .‬وأمه آمنة بنت وھب من بني النجار‪.‬‬ ‫‪ :‬ولد سيد المرسلين صلى " عليه وسلم بشعب بني ھاشم بمكة المكرمة‬ ‫مولده‬ ‫في صبيحة يوم االثنين التاسع من شھر ربيع األول لعام الفيل‪ .‬لقد حدثت أمور عند‬ ‫مولده تبشر ببعثه‪ ،‬فقد سقطت أربع عشرة شرفة من إيوان كسرى‪ ،‬وخمدت النار‬ ‫التي يعبدھا المجوس‪ ،‬و انھدمت الكنائس حول بحيرة ساوه بعد أن غاصت‪.‬‬ ‫‪:‬حليمة السعدية وبقي عندھا حتى بعد الفطام لما رأت من بركته‪ ،‬ثم‬ ‫مرضعته‬ ‫ردته إلى أمه التي توفيت عنه صلى " عليه وسلم وھو ابن ست سنين‪.‬‬ ‫طفولته ‪ :‬كفله جده عبد المطلب الذي رق عليه رقة لم يرقھا على أحد من أوالده‬ ‫فكان يؤثره على الجميع قائالً لھم إن ابنه ھذا‪ ،‬قاص ًدا محم ًدا صلى " عليه وسلم‪ ،‬له‬ ‫شأن عظيم ويسره منه كل ما يصنع له حتى توفي عنه وھو ابن ثماني سنين ثم انتقل‬ ‫إلى كنف عمه أبو طالب الذي نھض به على أكمل وجه وضمه إلى ولده واختصه‬ ‫بفضل و احترام وتقدير وظل فوق أربعين عامًا يعز جانبه ويبسط عليه حمايته‬ ‫ويصادق ويخاصم من أجله‪.‬‬ ‫‪ :‬تزوج صلى " عليه وسلم بأم المؤمنين خديجة بنت خويلد في‬ ‫زواجه‬ ‫الخامسة والعشرين من عمره بعد أن أعجبت به ‪،‬لما رأت منه من شمائل كريمة‬ ‫وفكر راجح ونھج أمين‪ ،‬وكانت خير زوجة لخير زوج ورزقھم " من األوالد اثنين‬ ‫ھما القاسم و عبد" ومن البنات أربع وھن زينب ورقية وأم كلثوم وفاطمة‪ ،‬رضي‬ ‫" عنھم أجمعين‪.‬أما ولده الثالث إبراھيم فكان من مارية القبطية‪ ،‬وقد شاءت حكمة‬ ‫" أن يموت جميع أوالده الذكور في صغرھم‪.‬‬ ‫‪ :‬لما قاربت سنه صلى " عليه وسلم من األربعين حببت إليه الخلوة‬ ‫بعثته‬ ‫والتفكر واعتزال الناس حتى جاءه الوحي بسورة اقرأ وأخبره أنه رسول " إلى‬ ‫العالمين‪ ،‬واستمر نزول الوحي عليه معلمًا إياه القرآن ‪-‬الذي كان وما زال دستورنا‬ ‫‪.‬‬ ‫ومنھجنا جعله " في قلوبنا وأعمالنا وحجة لنا ال علينا‪ -‬حتى وفاته‬ ‫وفاته‬ ‫‪:‬عاش صلى " عليه وسلم حتى بلغ الثالثة والستين‪ ،‬واحتضر وھو‬ ‫يوصي قائالً الصالة الصالة وما ملكت أيمانكم‪ ،‬مكررً ا ذلك مرارً ا صلى " عليه‬ ‫وسلم‪.‬‬ ‫ھذه السيرة التي أتينا عليھا بكلمات وجمل قصار من‬ ‫مظاھر كماله وعظيم صفاته ما ھي إال إيجاز لسيرة‬ ‫عطرة خالدة ال يكفي لسردھا مكتبات بأكملھا‪■ .‬‬

‫■ ﺧﻴﺮ ﺟﻠﻴﺲ‬ ‫■ نھدي قراءنا الكرام كتاب‪ :‬فلسطين‪ ..‬التاريخ المصور‬ ‫للدكتور طارق السويدان‬ ‫ھذا الكتاب يسرد األحداث التي جرت على أرض فلسطين حسب تسلسلھا‬ ‫التاريخي منذ أول من سكنھا وھم العرب الكنعانيون حتى عصرنا الحاضر‬ ‫وظھور انتفاضة األقصى‬ ‫يتميز ھذا الكتاب بتنظيم متقن وتصميم جذاب باإلضافة إلى احتوائه على‬ ‫عدد ھائل من الصور التي تنتقل بالقارئ إلى جو الحدث‪.‬‬ ‫ونظرا ألن قضية فلسطين كانت قضية األمة األولى وما زالت فإننا لن‬ ‫‪٨‬‬ ‫نصل إلى كيفية إنھائھا إذا لم نعرف كيف كانت بدايتھا وتاريخھا ■‬

‫■ ﻧﺠﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﻔﻴﺼﻞ‬ ‫“ﺍﻟﻤﻄﺒﻘﺎﻧﻲ” ﺍﻟﻄﻴﺎﺭ!‬ ‫■لقد كان من دواعي سرور فريق” حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسھم” أن تتاح له فرصة‬ ‫إجراء مقابلة صحفية مع الدكتور محمد المطبقاني‪ ،‬كونه أحد الشخصيات المميزة في‬ ‫جامعتنا‪ .‬و قد قابلنا‪ ،‬مشكوراً‪ ،‬بصدر رحب و أريحية تامة لإلجابة على أسئلتنا‬ ‫المتواضعة‪ .‬و قد تمكن الفريق من إجراء ھذه المقابلة بعد انتظار طال ثالثة أسابيع‬ ‫نظراً النشغال الدكتور‪ ،‬كي ال تفوته "الطيارة" في كل مرة‪ .‬و حتى ال أطيل عليكم‪،‬‬ ‫ھاكم المقابلة‪:‬‬ ‫‪ّ (١‬‬ ‫ھال سمحت لنا بمعرفة األسماء التي تقع بين "محمد" و "المطبقاني"؟‬ ‫أنا‪ ،‬محمد أكرم حسن المطبقاني‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٢‬مكان و تاريخ الوالدة؟‬ ‫ولدت في مدينة جــــدة‪ ،‬و كان ذلك عام ‪. ١٩٦٠\٩\١‬‬ ‫‪ (٣‬ھل كان مجال الطب ھو الحلم الذي راودك منذ الطفولة؟‬ ‫ال‪ ،‬بل كان حلمي أن أكون طياراً‪ ،‬و مع مرور الوقت نمت رغبة الطب لدي‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٤‬الرحلة العلمية و العملية للدكتور المطبقاني‪ ،‬و أعني بذلك الشھادات التي حصلت‬ ‫عليھا و الخبرات التي اكتسبتھا؟‬ ‫بالنسبة للشھادات‪ ،‬فالثانوية العامة كانت من بريطانيا‪ ،‬و بالتحديد من كلية برايتون في‬ ‫الجنوب‪ ،‬و شھادة البكالوريوس كانت من جامعة أبردين في إسكوتلندا‪ ،‬و شھادة‬ ‫الماجستير من جامعة سانت اندروس‪ ،‬و دكتوراه تشريح الجسم البشري من جامعة‬ ‫سانت أندروس أيضا ً‪.‬‬ ‫و أما بالنسبة للخبرة العملية‪ ،‬فقد اكتسبت جزء من خبرتي من خالل تدريسي في تلك‬ ‫الجامعات أثناء تقديمي للماجستير و الدكتوراه‪ ،‬و عند عودتي إلى المملكة تم تعييني‬ ‫في جامعة الملك فيصل في الدمام‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٥‬أين يرى “المطبقاني” نفسه بعد عشر سنوات ؟‬ ‫بصراحة‪ ،‬بعد عشر سنوات من اآلن أكون قد تقاعدت‪ ،‬و بإذن " أكون حينھا قد‬ ‫أديت رسالتي في الحياة‪ .‬لقد كان طموحي أن أألف كتاباً‪ ،‬و ھا أنا ذا قد ألفت كتابين‬ ‫في علم األنسجة الخلوية و ‪ h‬الحمد‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٦‬من ھو الرجل الذي كان له األثر األكبر في اختيارك لعلم التشريح ؟‬ ‫البروفيسور كلينج‪ ،‬كان رئيس قسم التشريح في جامعة أبردين‪ ،‬و ھو الشخص الذي‬ ‫جعلني أفكر و أرغب بمجال التشريح‪ .‬و كان ذلك ألسلوبه المميز و إخالصه المتناھي‬ ‫في العمل‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٧‬من وجھة نظرك‪ ،‬ما ھو السبب الرئيسي لتقدم الغرب علينا في كثير من‬ ‫المجاالت و باألخص المجال العلمي‪،‬نظراً لتجوالك و دراستك في بعض تلك البالد؟‬ ‫من أھم األشياء التي أرى أنھا ساعدت في تقدمھم ھو االلتزام الشديد بالوقت و التفاني‬ ‫في أداء العمل‪ .‬وكما تعلم‪ ،‬نحن نفتقر إلى ھاتين الخاصيتين في عالمنا اإلسالمي مع‬ ‫أننا أصالً مأمورون بھذا كمسلمين في كتاب " و سنة رسوله‪-‬صلى " عليه وسلم‪.-‬‬

‫■ ﺃﺟﺮﻯ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﺎﺑﻠﺔ‪ :‬ﻫﺎﻧﻲ ﺍﻟﺘﺮﻛﻤﺎﻧﻲ‬ ‫السلبيات‪ ،‬و بالتالي يساعدنا على تجنب األخطاء و العمل على تكوين بيئة تعليمية أفضل بإذن‬ ‫"‪ .‬و من الجيد أن أذكر ھنا الجانب اإليجابي للفيصل‪ ،‬و ھو أن طالبھا ‪-‬عن طريق نظام‬ ‫التعلم على أساس حل المشكالت)‪ -(PBL‬قد كونوا خلفية طبية تفوق من ھم في نفس المرحلة‬ ‫من التعليم من أقرانھم‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (١٠‬ھل من سر يكمن وراء ابتسامة المطبقاني الدائمة؟‬ ‫ھذه طبيعيتي‪ ،‬ال أكثر و ال أقل‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (١١‬أال تذكر لقرائنا موقف طريف حصل معك؟‬ ‫ً‬ ‫متاحة‬ ‫عندما كنت أعمل في المشرحة في جامعة أبردين في إسكوتلندا‪ .‬كانت ھذه المشرحة‬ ‫‪ ٢٤‬ساعة في اليوم‪ ،‬وكانت ھناك لوحة كتب عليھا‪" :‬ممنوع النوم في المشرحة"‪ .‬قد استغربت‬ ‫و تساءلت من الذي سيأتي و ينام في مشرحة‪ .‬و بعد سؤال أحد األصدقاء علمت أنه في إحدى‬ ‫المرات أتى أحد الطالب و استمر بالتشريح حتى منتصف الليل‪ ،‬و عندما شعر بالتعب سحب‬ ‫أحد رفوف الجثث و نام عليه‪ .‬و في الصباح أتت إحدى عامالت التنظيف المشرحة‪ ،‬فاستيقظ‬ ‫ھو على صوتھا‪ ،‬فلما رأته أغمي عليھا‪ .‬و من ذلك اليوم و النوم ممنوع في المشرحة!‬ ‫‪ (١٢‬ما ھي رياضتك المفضلة؟‬ ‫كرة الطائرة و تنس الطاولة‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (١٣‬ما رأيك عن الوضع في غزة‪ ،‬و كطالب جامعة ما ھو واجبنا تجاه إخواننا في غزة؟‬ ‫)ھذا السؤال كان أثناء الحرب (‬ ‫إن ما يحصل في غزة من قتل لألطفال و النساء والشيوخ يندى له جبين كل عربي و مسلم و‬ ‫ليس ھذا فحسب بل يتعداه إلى كل إنسان حر في ھذا العالم ‪.‬‬ ‫أما أنتم فأھم ما يجب عليكم فعله ھو اكمال رحلتكم العلمية وتسخيرھا لخدمة القضية ‪ .‬وال‬ ‫ننسى أن " اليكلف نفسا اال وسعھا فكل منكم يقدم ما يستطع ‪ ،‬ومن ناحية اخرى ھناك جھات‬ ‫مختصة للتعامل مع باقي المواضيع كحملة الملك عبد " للخيرية إلغاثة غزة‪.‬‬ ‫و في ختام اللقاء‪ ،‬أعرب المطبقاني عن امتنانه إلمكانية التواصل مع طالب الكلية بعيداً عن‬ ‫جو المحاضرة‪■ .‬‬

‫■ ﺻﻮﺭﺓ ﻭﻣﻌﻨﻰ‬

‫‪ (٨‬ما رأيك بمستوى طالب الطب في جامعة الفيصل بشكل عام بالمقارنة مع أقرانھم‬ ‫في الدول المتقدمة؟‬ ‫برأيي و من خبرتي أرى أن طالب الطب في المملكة بشكل عام متميزين جداً عن‬ ‫أقرانھم في تلك الدول‪ ،‬صدق أو ال تصدق‪ .‬و لعل السبب في ذلك أن طالب الطب ھنا‬ ‫حريص على العمل الجاد أكثر من غيره في تلك الدول‪ ،‬و بالطبع أنا أتحدث عن‬ ‫النخبة ھنا بالمقارنة مع النخبة ھناك‪ .‬و ال تنسى أيضا ً أن المنافسة الشديدة‬ ‫للحصول على مقعد في كليات الطب في المملكة ساعد على خلق ھذه الطبقة من‬ ‫الطالب‪.‬‬ ‫‪ (٩‬مع أنه قد يكون سؤاالً محرجاً‪ ،‬ما ھي أھم السلبيات التي تراھا في الفيصل؟‬ ‫بصراحة من الصعب الحكم على جامعة وليدة مثل الفيصل و بلورة سلبياتھا و‬ ‫إيجابياتھا في ھذه المرحلة‪ .‬و في الحقيقة‪ ،‬أرى أن الطالب أقدر مني على تحديد‬ ‫‪٩‬‬

January 7, 2009 From Kentucky - According to a study in Clinical Cancer Research, grape seed extract may have benefits for the treatment of leukemia. Researchers have found that grape seed extract can cause leukemia cell death by activating certain proteins involved in apoptosis. In the study, the researchers discovered that a 10 mcg/mL dose of extract moderately increased leukemia cell death, while a 25 mcg/mL dose increased cell death extensively. The extract had no effect on healthy cells.

January 8, 2009 From Atlanta - According to a study published in the CDC's National Vital Statistics Reports, the teen birth rate in the U.S. has risen for the first time in 15 years. According to the study, the birth rate among girls aged 15 to 19 increased by 3% in 2006. The states with the highest rates were Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas at over 60 births per 1,000 girls. New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts had the lowest rates at around 20 per 1,000.

January 20, 2009 From Sweden - According to research in the journal Neurology, having a relaxed and outgoing personality may help prevent dementia. In a study of over 500 older adults, researchers found that the risk of dementia was 50% lower among those who identified themselves as calm and outgoing, compared to those prone to social isolation or neuroticism. Exercising, socializing, problem solving and eating a healthy diet are all considered ways to help protect against dementia.

January 23, 2009 From Washington - The FDA has approved the first trial of embryonic stem cells in the U.S. Regulators have given a biotech company the go-ahead to conduct a trial on a treatment for those suffering from spinal cord injuries. The Phase I trial will establish whether the treatment is safe and will involve injecting spinal cord injury patients with cells derived from embryonic stem cells. If successful this treatment could transform the lives of thousands of people who are disabled by spinal cord injuries each year.

• February 7-9: College of Medicine is constructing the 3rd Basic Principles of Undergraduate Medical Education Workshop at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre that will be facilitated by PHMI faculty for clinicians.

Q1: Why did you choose medicine?

A1: I chose medicine because it gives you the opportunity to give sick people the happiness of having good health.

Another reason is that because medicine is really an exciting career, as there are a lot of steps in that you can always find another step to aim for, in an endless way ( college, internship, residency, subspecialty, PhDs, etc…) and each step has its unique flavor.

A2: Because I believe that Alfaisal has really high educational criteria that distinguish it from other universities. I am impressed by the credibility of the founders, administration, high level professors and faculty, the unique modern organized curriculum, Harvard partnership and much more.

Q3: What are your talents, hobbies, and activities that you enjoy doing in your free time?

A3: Graphic designing, tennis, swimming, solving a Rubik’s cube, drawing, hanging out, basketball and doing surgeries! Also, I like reading novels, especially Dan Brown’s, and poems, especially Elya Abo-Mady’s and Amroa Al-Qais’s poems.
