■ On the 27th of January, 2010, the Medical Student Association (MSA) at Alfaisal University held a ceremony to honor

the students who participated in MSA’s Summer Research and Training Program, under the patronage of his Royal Highness Prince Abdul-Aziz bin Ahmed bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud. The program was done with the cooperation of several main hospitals in Riyadh, including King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Kingdom Hospital, AlHabib Medical Center, and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.

This program introduced Alfaisal Students to training in research fields such as stem cell and genetics research. The training also was extended to an introduction in basics of the protocols used in medical labs, radiology departments, in addition to an orientation of the medical students to the basics of doctor-patient relationship, preparing Alfaisal Students to serve their community with professional standards.

The ceremony was held at King Faisal Palace on campus. His Royal Highness excused himself from attending for he had an urgent mission, and delegated his Office Manger, Mr. Saad Albaez for the ceremony. The ceremony was attended by the heads and representatives of the program’s partners, in addition to representatives of Dalah Hospital, Al-Mishari Hospital, The Saudi Germany Hospital, Specialized Medical Center, Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association, and the University Diabetes Center.

The ceremony was initiated with recitation of The Holy Quran, after an opening speech by Abdullah AlShammari, MSA Social Representative. After that, the very articulate Vice President for Student Affairs of Alfaisal University, Dr. Abdulhameed AlAbduljabar, gave a welcoming speech. Dr. Khalid Al-Kattan, Dean of College of Medicine, stated that the vision of Alfaisal has now come into reality and that he congratulates all on its creation. This was followed by a word from Ahmad Adi, MSA Student Development Representative, thanking and congratulating the students and the partners for the success of the program.

A short documentary movie was shown about the Summer Program produced by Press Photographer Bilal Alturkmani.

Mr. Saad Albaez with Dr. Khalid and Dr. Abdulhameed distributed appreciation certificates to the students, and thanking letters to the partners who attended. Insha’Allah, such a program shall become a strong foundation whereby students can build upon valuable experiences and relationships for years to come.

Coming from one of the top Medical Institutions in Asia, Aga Khan University Hospital Pakistan. How would you compare the teaching methods with our medical college?

“I think Alfaisal has adopted the most advanced methods of teaching which includes methods which are students’ centered, problem based and integrated. However, as this is a very new institution it has to go a long way before this type of curriculum gets well established. Comparing it with Aga Khan Medical College at this very early stage will be unfair.”

What deciding factors lead you to come teach at Alfaisal?

“I think as a young scientist/teacher, Alfaisal provided me with an excellent opportunity to balance my skills as an academician as well as a scientist.”

What do you expect from Alfaisal in 10 years?

“I think Alfaisal University will be among the leading Universities of this region in next 10 years, if we continue to work hard with this common mission in mind.”

How is it like being the first and only permanent female teaching professor at Alfaisal Medical?

“I am very proud to be the first full-time female faculty at AU. I feel I am following in the legacy of my mother, as she was a force in fighting for women’s rights in Canada. I am hoping that this is only a start – there is still progress to be made as far as employing women in academic positions is concerned. I am excited to be a part of a university that acknowledges gender equality and equal opportunity.”

As compared to the first year and second year medical students you have worked with in Canada, how do Alfaisal Medical students differ?

“AU students have proved to be keen and inquisitive when not slumped over their desks with exhaustion. Many have shown an openness to change, willingness to learn and eagerness to face the challenges of a new university. I hope that as professionals, the students, in essence, always remain open and willing to learn.”

How are you adapting to the cultural changes in KSA? “Adapting to the cultural changes is ongoing. I have only been here for 4 months. Learning to manage on a daily basis hasn’t been a major problem. I don’t expect complete adaptation, in view of absence of freedoms and gender inequalities.”

and 31st of December 2009, the Medical Student Association (MSA) hosted the 3rd national meeting for the International Federation of the Medical Student Association (IFMSA) within the King Faisal Palace on campus.

Generally, the aim of this meeting was to gather all medical students in KSA, improve communication between them and unite their efforts, allowing for bigger and more effective role of medical studnets in their commuinty, acadimically and socially.

The Meeting lasted over two days. The first session included an introduction about the IFMSA-SA and the issues related to expanding it to all medical colleges within the Kingdom. The meeting was followed by a grand dinner at a Brazilian Restaurant.

Yes, food is always a good ending!

The second session was thorough discussion about the roles of IFMSA-SA committees and roles within and beyond the Kingdom, and what these provide for medical students and Saudi Community.

It was finally concluded that that AU MSA hosts the first General Assembly (GA) in the Kingdom. Such a privilege would further our relationships and connect all with medical students around the Kingdom while expressing what the MSA is all about. All in all, we rocked!

Reem International Carting: 11.986 Seconds?!

Circuit. The col-

lege was especially invited by Mrs. Reem Sfaf herself which makes it all the more interesting! On a pleasant mid December Wednesday night, a handful of our medical students got ready to face each other around the circuit in their carts. It was adrenaline-filled and weirdly addictive! Ten rounds later, Ahmad Adi, second year medical student, got the first position with a best lap time of one minute and 11.986 seconds! If medicine doesn't work out, racing should!

■ First year medical students after their first cadaver dissection ■ On 6th December, two months into their medical training, the new batch of first years had their first dissection session with

cadavers. A group of fifteen students were chosen from the second batch, lead by Karam Hamweyah and Mohammed Diya Sabbagh they worked with Dr. Ganguly, Dr. Michele and Dr. Ahmed to organize and orient the sessions.

The “Cadaver 15” as they have been nicknamed organised the students into four groups each spent up to an hour in with the cadavers. There is a certain extent we can learn from books, but the lab session exposed the students to a more surreal view on their human anatomy. Aside from helping academically, the lab coats, scrubs, scalpels, and for many being in the same room as cadavers for the first time were good enough reasons to spend an extra few hours at university! How’s that to brag to friends and siblings who went into business?

Table Tennis Club; Got Game?

■ FINALLY we have an on-campus sport activity besides soccer!

Not only that, but this activity is for ALL Alfaisal students, staff and the faculty. The idea of the club is to provide everyone with an interactive activity during their free time, and to help beginners learn this easy yet FUN sport! The club hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on the second floor of the College of Science building.

AND THERE’S MORE! Soon, we are going to have our FIRST intra-university table tennis tournament! So people, start shedding some calories in practice, and get ready to try out your luck in the tournament!”

■ “Let’s talk to the world, everywhere and anywhere. Now, different languages will never be an obstacle. If you are a student, a faculty, or staff member in the university, you are most welcome to join us! The Linguistics Club provides language learning opportunities for whoever is interested. We have a variety of languages to be taught in the near future, such as French, Spanish, Italian, Ger■ Mohammed Al-Sibae man, Japanese, and Arabic. Any popuLinguistics Club Founder larly requested language will be considered too! In addition, the club will have various activities that enhance the learning experience and effectiveness as well as the cultural aspects.

Currently, only French and Spanish lessons are available, however the club will start an Arabic course next semester. The club was able to corporate with the French embassy for the French course and with a professional experienced Spanish instructor for the Spanish course. Effective Note-Taking: “Figure out a lecturer's style” ■ “First of all, I would like to stress the importance of taking notes during lectures, tutorials and lab

sessions. Information presented in lectures often contains the principal concepts of the course and the material most likely to be included on exams. Not only do they add on to your information, they also help you retain the information you took in the past lecture.

Lecture styles vary greatly from speaker to speaker. It is imperative that you figure out a lecturer's style. In the case of the rambler or story teller, you may find yourself at the end of an hour with only a sentence or two written down. Note taking requires active listening with proper techniques. Here are some tips that may help you; Learn to write quickly, write down definitions, don't copy outline word for word, if your instructor indicates that something is important, mark it, If your instructor is going too fast or is unclear, inform him.”

Poetry; Metamorphosis ■ Professor Bernhard Juurlink sent the Press this great artistic poetic piece not-

ing that he thought of it as a message to the students. He stated that he “wrote it while thinking about individuals that encounter difficulties, for example, some students who do not do well in an exam. Such individuals should be like the butterfly and not think back to when life was not so good but resolve to do better just as the butterfly transfigures from the caterpillar it once was.”

‫■ كسزة ‪ ...‬تقلب المعىى رأسا على عقب !‬ ‫■ قدم أعرابً فً زمان عمر فقال من ٌقرئنً مما انزل هللا على محححمحد‬ ‫فؤقرأه رجل سورة براءة فقال ( إن هللا بريء من المشركٌن ورسحولهحه )‬ ‫ بالجر‪ -‬فقال األعرابً أو قد برء هللا من رسوله ! إن ٌكن هللا قحد بحرء‬‫من رسوله فؤنا أبرأ منه فبلغ عمر محقحالحة األعحرابحً فحدعحاه فحقحال ٌحا‬ ‫أعرابً أتبرأ محن رسحول هللا ؟ قحال ٌحا أمحٌحر الحمحإمحنحٌحن إنحً قحدمح‬ ‫المشركٌن وال علم لً فسؤل من ٌقرئنً فؤقرأنً هذا سورة براءة فحقحال‬ ‫( إن هللا بريء من المشركٌن ورسحولهحه ) فحقحلح أو قحد بحرىء هللا محن‬ ‫رسوله؟ إن ٌكن هللا قد برىء من رسوله فؤنا أبرأ منه فقال عمر لٌحس‬ ‫هكذا ٌا أعرابً قال فكٌ هً ٌا أمٌر المإمنٌن فقال ( إن هللا بريء محن‬ ‫المشركٌن ورسولُه ) ‪ -‬بالضم ‪ -‬فقال األعرابً عندها ‪ :‬وأنحا وهللا أبحرأ‬ ‫ُحقحرا الحقحرآن‬ ‫مما برىء هللا ورسوله منه فؤمر عمر بن الخطاب أال ٌ ه‬ ‫إال عالم باللغة‪ ( .‬كتاب سبب وضع علم العربٌة السٌوطً )‬ ‫عند قراءة ( رسولِه ) بالكسر ‪ -‬تكون إذا معطوفة علين اليمي يركييين ‪،‬‬ ‫وبذلا يصبح رسول هللا ريا للم ريكن ف كون هللا قد برئ مينيهيم ‪،‬‬ ‫وهذا خطؤ فاد يغير معنن اآلية تماما ‪.‬‬ ‫وإنما الصواب قراءتها بالضم ( رسولُه ) لتكون ميعيطيوفية عيلين ليفية‬ ‫الج لة هللا ‪ -‬وتعرب مبتدأ خبره محذوف ‪ ، -‬وبذلا ‪ ،‬يصير المعنن أن‬ ‫هللا ورسوله بريئان من الم ركين ‪.‬‬ ‫هذه الحادثة من أحد األسباب التً دع علماء العربٌة إلى وضع قواعد‬ ‫اللغة العربٌة و تؤسٌس علم النحو لمنع حدوث مثل هذه األخطاء‬

‫■ بقلم‪ :‬هان التركمان‬ ‫‪halturkmani@alfaisal.edu‬‬ ‫قبل أن أبدأ مقالت أريدا أخ أن تعلم أن ال‬ ‫أملا من العلم ال رع يئاً‪ ،‬وإنما ه خاطرة‬ ‫أردتا أن ت اركن إياها‪.‬‬ ‫كالنا ٌعلم أن ما وصل إلٌه حال األمة اإلسالمٌة ال ٌسر و ال ٌرضحً محن‬ ‫كان فٌه حس مسإولٌة و غٌرة على أمته و مجتمعه‪ .‬و أنحا عحنحدمحا أطحرح‬ ‫موضوع نهضة األمة ال آتً بجدٌد فقد طرح هذا الموضوع آال المرا‬ ‫قبل ذلك و لكن ما تغٌر من حال األمة شًء ٌذكر فؤٌن تكمن المشكلة إذاً؟‬ ‫لقد ناقش هذا الموضوع مع كثٌر محن الحنحاس و أغحلحبحهحم اتحفحق عحلحى أن‬ ‫" أعداء اإلسالم" هم من ٌحطمونه و هم من أوصلوه إلى هذه الحححال‪ .‬لحكحن‬ ‫فكر معً عندما كان النبً‪-‬صلى هللا علٌه وسلم‪ٌ -‬ضع قحواعحد األمحة بحدءاً‬ ‫من الصفر ألم ٌكن هنالك "أعداء" أٌضاً؟ ألم ٌكن هنالك قرٌش و الروم و‬ ‫الفرس وغٌر ذلك ممن لم ٌدع وسحٌحلحة إلسحكحا صحو هحذا الحدٌحن إال و‬ ‫استخدمها‪ .‬إذاً فالحرب واحدة و ما تغٌر إال نحن‪ %15.‬من حل الحمحشحكحلحة‬ ‫ٌكمن باالعترا بها فالمشكلة فٌنا نحن و الحل بؤٌدٌنا نحن‪.‬‬ ‫األمة اإلسالمٌة لم تصل إال هذا المستوى بسبب مشكلة واحدة و إنمحا هحً‬ ‫آال المشاكل التً اجتمع معا ً لتإدي إلى هذه النتٌحجحة الحمحإسحفحة‪ .‬و محن‬ ‫المشاكل الرئٌسٌة التً أراها أن حٌاتنا لم تعد خالصة هلل عز و جحل و لحم‬ ‫تعد مكرسة لدٌنه و من أحد أوجهها طلب العلم‪ .‬فكثٌر منا لألس ٌسعى‬ ‫وراء العلم من أجل الدنٌا و لٌس من أجل اآلخرة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫هندسحة‬ ‫ما ٌنقصنا اآلن هو أن نجعل هذا العلم الذي نطلبه سوا ًء كان طبا ً أو‬ ‫أو غٌر ذلك مسخراً إلعحادة بحنحاء هحذه األمحة‪ .‬و هحذا ال ٌحعحنحً أن نحهحمحل‬ ‫الدرجا و الشهادا فالمإمن القوي خٌر عند هللا من المحإمحن الضحعحٌح‬ ‫وفً كل خٌر ‪.‬‬ ‫فلنتعاهد أخ ‪ -‬أنا و أنإل‪ -‬أن نطو صفحة الماض و نبدأ صفحة جديدة‬ ‫نست عر ف كل دقيقة فيها نقضيها ف طلب العلم أنها دقيقة من أجيل هللا‬ ‫رفعة‪O‬دينه‪.‬‬ ‫عز وجل و من أجل‬ ‫‪C O L L E G E‬‬ ‫‪F‬‬ ‫‪M E D I C I N E‬‬

‫ٌقول النبً ‪ -‬صلى هللا علٌه وسلم ‪ -‬فً حدٌثه‪" :‬ل َت ْف َتحُنّ القسطنطٌنٌة‪ ،‬فلنعم األمٌر أمٌرها‪ ،‬ولنعم الجٌش ذلك‬ ‫الجٌش"]مسند أحمد‪.]53//4 :‬‬ ‫انتظر المسلمون ثمانٌة قرون ونصف حتى تحققت البشارة‪ ،‬وفُتحت القسطنطٌنٌة بعد محاوالت جادة بدأت منذ عهد عثمان بن عفان رضً هللا عنه (‪/3‬هـ=‪243‬م)‬ ‫إصرارا فً عهد معاوٌة بن أبً سفٌان رضً هللا عنه فً مرتٌن‪ :‬األولى سنة (‪54‬هـ = ‪222‬م) والثانٌة بٌن سنتً (‪274-27/=26-45‬م)‪،‬‬ ‫‪ ،‬وازدادت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واشتعلت رغبة وأمالً‬ ‫طموحا فً عهد سلٌمان بن عبد الملك الخلٌفة األموي سنة (‪44‬هـ=‪714‬م)‪ ..‬لكن هذه المحاوالت لم ٌُكتب لها النجاح والتوفٌق‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ولكن من هو صاحب البشارة ٌا ترو ؟‬ ‫■ ولد السلطان محمد الفاتعح فعً‬ ‫(‪ 37‬مععن رجععب ‪ 7/4‬هـع = ‪ /6‬مععن‬ ‫مارس ‪15/3‬م)‪ ،‬ونشأ فعً كعنعف أبعٌعه‬ ‫السلطان "مراد الثانً" ساب سعالطعٌعن‬ ‫الدولة العثمانٌة‪ ،‬الذي تع ّهده بعالعرععاٌعة‬ ‫والععتعععععلععٌععمي لععٌععكععون جععدٌع ًعرا بععالسععلععطععنععة‬ ‫والنهوض بعمعسعئعولعٌعاتعهعاي فعأتعم حعفعظ‬ ‫القرآن‪ ،‬وقرأ الحدٌث‪ ،‬وتعلم الفقه‪ ،‬ودرس الرٌاضٌات والفلك وأمور‬ ‫الحرب‪ ،‬وإلى جعانعب ذلعك تعععلعم العععربعٌعة والعفعارسعٌعة والعالتعٌعنعٌعة‬ ‫والٌونانٌة‪ ،‬واشترك م أبٌه السلطان مراد فً حروبه وغزواته‪.‬‬ ‫وقد نجح الشٌخ " آق شمعس العدٌعن" فعً أن ٌعبعث فعً روح‬ ‫األمٌر حب الجهاد والتطل إلى معالً األمعور‪ ،‬وأن ٌُعلع ّمعح لعه بعأنعه‬ ‫فشب طعامعح العنعفعس‪،‬‬ ‫المقصود ببشارة النبً صلى هللا علٌه وسلم‪،‬‬ ‫َّ‬ ‫شعاععرا‪،‬‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ب‬ ‫أدٌ‬ ‫والشعور‪،‬‬ ‫عالً الهمة‪ ،‬موفور الثقافة‪ ،‬رهٌف الحس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضالً عن إلمامه بشئون الحرب والسٌاسة‪.‬‬ ‫تولى محمد الفاتح السلطنة بعد وفاة أبٌه فً (‪ 4‬من العمعحعرم‬ ‫‪ 744‬هـ ع=‪7‬مععن فععبععراٌععر ‪1541‬م) ‪ ،‬وبععدأ فععً الععتععجععهععٌععز لععفععتععح‬ ‫القسطنطٌنٌة‪ ،‬لٌحقق الحلم الذي ٌراوده‪ ،‬ولٌكون هو محل العبعشعارة‬ ‫النبوٌة‪ ،‬وفً الوقت نفسه ٌسهل لدولته الفتٌة الفتوحات فً منطعقعة‬ ‫البلقان‪ ،‬وٌجعل بالده متصلة ال ٌفصلها عدو ٌتربص بها‪.‬‬ ‫الوظسض ‪ :‬أحوس توام ‪ ،‬هحوس الفاتح طاحة الثشاضج ‪،‬إسالم أّى الٌي‬

‫فرح انقغطُطُ​ُ​ُح‪...‬‬ ‫■ وبعععععد أن أتععم السععلععطععان كععل‬ ‫الوسائل التً تعٌنه على تحعقعٌعق‬ ‫النعصعر‪ ،‬زحعف بعجعٌعشعه العبعالع‬ ‫‪ 324‬ألعف معقعاتعل معن العمعشععاة‬ ‫والفعرسعان‪ ،‬تصعحعبعهعم العمعدافع‬ ‫الضعععخعععمعععة‪ ،‬واتعععجعععهعععوا إلعععى‬ ‫القسطنطعٌعنعٌعة‪ ،‬وفعً فعجعر ٌعوم‬ ‫( ‪ 36‬معن‬ ‫الثالثاء الموافق‬ ‫جععمععادو األولععى ‪747‬هـع = ‪34‬‬ ‫من ماٌو ‪154/‬م) نجحت قعوات‬ ‫محمد الفاتح فً اقتحام أسوار القسطنطٌنٌة‪ ،‬فً واحدة من العملعٌعات‬ ‫العسكرٌة النادرة فً التارٌخ‪ .. ،‬وقد لُقب من وقتها بـ"محمد الفاتح“‬ ‫شكعرا‪ ،‬ثعم تعوجعه إلعى‬ ‫ترجل عن فرسه‪ ،‬وسجد هلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ولما دخل المدٌنة ّ‬ ‫كنٌسة " آٌا صوفٌا"‪ ،‬وأمر بتحوٌلها مسجدًا‪ ،‬وأمر بإقامة مسجعد فعً‬ ‫موض قبر الصحابً الجلٌل " أبً أٌوب األنصاري" الذي كان ضعمعن‬ ‫صفوف العمعحعاولعة األولعى لعفعتعح العمعدٌعنعة العععرٌعقعة‪ ،‬وقعرر اتعخعاذ‬ ‫القسطنطٌنٌة عاصمة لدولته‪ ،‬وأطلق علٌها اسم "إسالم بول" أي دار‬ ‫اإلسالم‪ ،‬ثم ُحرفت بعد ذلك واشتهرت بإستعانعبعول‪ ،‬وانعتعهعة سعٌعاسعة‬ ‫متسامحة م سكان المدٌنة‪ ،‬وكفل لهم ممارسة عباداتهعم فعً حعرٌعة‬ ‫كاملة‪ ،‬وسمح بعودة الذٌن غادروا المدٌنعة فعً أثعنعاء العحعصعار إلعى‬ ‫منازلهم‪.‬‬
