Yoga benefits beyond the mat From increased flexibility and strength, to mental focus and calm, yoga enthusiasts have many reasons to embrace this ancient Indian discipline that dates back more than 2,500 years. Nowadays, yoga has become a mainstream form of exercise and mindfulness practice for millions.

Most people practicing yoga report that they feel less stressed, and a greater sense of well being.

Studies also show that yoga alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression and improves physical fitness.

Kushala Yoga founder Chris Dunphy and his wife/partner Karen Andersen couldn’t agree more.

“A decade ago I was working a stressful job, and also dealing with anxiety and depression” says Andersen. “To help cope, I went to the gym daily, I tried martial arts, but my physical and mental health weren’t improving. Living in Kitsilano at the time, there were lots of people practicing yoga around me, and they looked happier than me, so I gave it a try.”

“I didn’t even like it the first few times. But eventually, I found the right mix of physical and mental exercise. I began to practice yoga daily, and things started to shift. I felt empowered to change my life for the better” she says, adding, years later she left her successful software career to join Dunphy at Kushala.

“Yoga in itself is transformative,” adds Dunphy. “It can help improve your physical health, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”

Dunphy continues, ‘Put simply, yoga is the path towards that place inside you where you experience a holistic connection between all parts of your life. In Hatha Yoga, this path is forged through a regular practice of physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation, self study and more.”

Both Andersen and Dunphy recommend that newbies start their practice gently, with the

guidance of an experienced teacher, and with realistic goals.

“Some people start out so enthusiastically that they come daily which, for many, results in burnout,” says Andersen. “For those who want to change their life through yoga, the best approach is to gradually include the practices both on and beyond their mat. For the benefit of our relationship and family life, that has been essential. In these hectic times, it’s sorely needed.”

Overcoming trauma through mindfulness When Lea Morrison’s first son was born premature, she went into a tailspin of depression and anxiety, eventually leading her into a spiral of psychosomatic episodes, suffering through 20 seizures a day. After going into therapy,

Morrison uncovered the root of her emotional breakdown; she had been sexually abused from a very young age.

Her long journey to health, which included years of therapy and personal development, led her to a career as a holistic healer, coach, teacher and speaker.

“Once I realized the power of the mind, I researched all about mindfulness and it helped in my recovery,” says the mother of two. “Because of the trauma, I can empathize with others in similar situations. Mindfulness can be a huge asset in trauma recovery.”

Put simply, mindfulness is about being present. With its origins in the Buddhist faith, mindfulness dates back some 2,600 + years.

Being mindful means paying close attention to what’s happening in the moment. Mindfulness – the practice of sitting still and focusing on your breath and thoughts - has

surged in popularity over the last several years, with a surge in apps, online courses, books and articles extolling its virtues.

“It means noticing what’s happening inside your mind and in your body . . . you are simply here, now, noticing what is and not judging it,” Morrison explains.

“Breath is the easiest way to connect your physical body to your emotional body. Without labeling these sensations as good or bad, just allow them to be.”

You can focus on the present anytime, anywhere - do it while you are sitting in traffic, waiting in a line-up, in the bathroom or brushing your teeth.

But can everyone truly practice mindfulness?

“There are proven techniques that work to cultivate mindfulness, but you have to find what works for you,” she notes. “It takes three weeks to form a habit and three

months to become a practice.”

Take infants and children, they are always in the moment. We can learn a lot from their natural sense of being.

“By witnessing your emotions through mindfulness, you can learn to work creatively with them,” says Morrison.

Feed the body At 1:00pm, a slice of pizza seems too irresistible to forgo. By the time you get home from work, you can’t wait for a glass of wine. Then, at 10:00pm, the ice cream is calling your name from the freezer.

This spring, you’ve promised yourself that you are going to commit to eating healthier. So, you stock your fridge with fresh fruits, vegetables and other whole foods, and skip the cookies and soda. Like many of us though, you are having a hard time sticking with these changes. Old habits die hard.

“We have so many barriers to eating healthy . . . we have easy access to highly processed carbs, high salt and sugary foods. We physiologically crave these foods,” says Jennifer Howker, registered dietician and founder of Apple Tree Nutrition Consulting. “Everyone knows they should eat less of these foods but dealing with the addictive-like cravings can be very challenging.”

That’s because high carbohydrate high fat foods stimulate the release of endorphins. These comfort foods actually make us feel better in the short term,

Connection and community is the core belief at LIFT fitness. explains Howker. “Unfortunately, these highly-processed, unhealthy carbs are often what we reach for.” Howker says.

That’s because endorphins, those pleasure transmitters, kick into high gear making cravings too much to ignore.

“Many people especially can’t resist carbs and they are all around us,” Howker says. “Some of us drive home from work hungry and pass probably a dozen fast food joints along the way.”

The best way to fight urges is to eat at regular intervals.

“This is really key because fluctuations in your blood sugar levels lead to further cravings and increases in insulin secretion.” says Howker. “Chronically elevated insulin levels will lead to insulin resistance which is known to play a role in inflammation, weight gain and numerous chronic illnesses.”

Tennis anyone? Try taking your fitness outside.

The worst culprits for spiking insulin levels are refined carbohydrates such as those found in baked goods, juice, pop, candy or highly processed snack foods.

Another thing you can do to help curb the cravings is to reach for complex carbohydrates instead of processed foods containing simple sugars.

Complex carbohydrates, which can be found in foods such as whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes, have a different effect on the body.

“Complex carbs take longer to digest, keep you feeling fuller longer and provide food for the good bacteria in your gut. Healthy gut bacteria is vital to overall health” explains Howker, who suggests keeping cut veggies in your fridge to snack on before the cravings hit.

Finally, Howker says know your triggers and times of the day when you are more susceptible to go for the high-caloric, low nutrient foods.

“For me, I get growly around 2:00pm,” she adds. “I enjoy protein-rich snacks like walnuts, almonds and Greek yogurt to make me feel satiated and keep me going until dinner.”

Fitness for a better you Often the hardest part of starting an exercise regimen is just that, starting.

Fitness doesn’t have to be a chore or boring, it can be quite fun and rewarding, says LIFT Fitness owner Shannon Day. “I’m a big believer in that if you find a gym or a fitness activity that makes you happy and aligns with you, you will stick to it,” says Day. It is also important that you set realistic goals, or you will set yourself up for failure.

“Start slow, don’t try to workout everyday or you will burn out,” explains the certified trainer.

“The first step is to consult with your doctor to make sure you are healthy to workout. Then, choose a gym that matches your beliefs and makes you feel welcomed and glad to be there.”

Day highly recommends people take advantage of complimentary week-long gym passes or free consultations with a personal trainer.

“Take advantage of these free trials and shop around,” she says, adding LIFT offers free monthly workshops and outdoor adventures. “A gym membership as well as a personal trainer to get you kick started is an investment in yourself.”

To alleviate boredom, break up your routine. Take your fitness routine outside. Go for a hike, walk, cycle, play tennis, head to your local fitness park or go for a swim.

“Other great ways to incorporate more exercise in your day is to park your car farther from your destination or in between television commercials, do some stretching exercises . . . remember little steps,” notes Day. Equally important is not to be hard on yourself. If you end up missing a day or two, don’t beat yourself up.

“As long as you keep going and trying you are on the right track,” Day notes. “Also, don’t compare yourself with others; this is your personal journey to fitness, not anyone else.” n

This happens to us. It starts when we are 12 or 13, realizing that we have a very long road ahead of us, but are so self absorbed by peer development that we miss the cues of self-regulation and mindful living.

We reaffirm our beliefs as we did in college or university – exploring, learning, still believing we know everything. Goals set in stone, reality of bills, seeking acceptance and landing those accolades within the office. Perhaps you have just purchasing a home, moving towards what you only imagined success to be.

o you’re financially successful. You have the career, the partner, the kids . . . maybe a pet. Or you are flying solo and living your best life as a single, in charge and conquering the world.

Yet you’re not happy. There’s something missing.

You think you’ve done the work, the research, the development – but life is not complete.

Maybe this is happening to you in your mid-20’s.

Unlikely, but could be happening. Maybe you are wellestablished within your career, but your biological clock is ticking louder and louder. Or maybe, you have it all, but dread going home every night, missing something you can’t quite put your finger on.

You’re not at your happiest.

So what now? For all accounts and purposes, you have it all. Yet you don’t.

When was the last time you checked in with how YOU are feeling? When was the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror, eye-to-eye? When was the last time you took accountability for the emotional body that sits within your physicality and listened with an open, tolerant, compassionate heart to the lost little one that is screaming inside? Yeah, that little one.

Living your best life doesn’t need to be so hard when you take a step towards owning your self resiliency.

You’ve witnessed the progression of the collective consciousness, you have participated in your own

way by taking part in discovering why you, along with millions of others, are inherently unhappy.

Here’s the thing with evolution: your consciousness and that of those you surround yourself with, are moving towards a mindful state of being. More and more people are discovering the level of unhappiness within their heart and taking action to be their best selves.

Many are realizing the fads of yoga, of meditation and tolerance are life style changes. It’s not a diet. It’s a way of life. The layers of healing old wounds and patterns placed upon us from emotionally-deprived parents and grandparents are increasing in large quantifiable numbers around the world.

Life no longer needs to be led the way we’ve been led to believe.

So what do you want to believe, if you actually had free thoughts to form? When you remove the opinions of

your environment; from expectation, from societal pressures – who are you then? This is the crux of your happiness. This is the root derived from the seed that was planted before you were even born.

It’s not the question of who you are, but rather who do you want to be without the noise in the background shoving you into a corner?

Mindfulness, meditative exercise, thought-provoking self reflection and time away from all the noise. Finding moments of what makes you happy, creates the foundation of happiness in a way that becomes a state of being, not an emotion to chase.

This is where you sit. This is where you plant a new seed, for the new roots to form, within a new forest of possibilities. It’s not elusive, it’s not conditional. It is evolutionary.

This your time.

So, what does a Mama Coach like Mayer offer?

Exhausted parents turn to Mama coaches for help After many sleepless nights, some moms and dads seek out experts who come to their home to assist with everything from feeding to sleeping and more

ost new parents will try just about anything to get their fussy baby to sleep - from singing to rocking, to going for a late-night drive around the block. It is often then that many sleep-deprived parents call upon the help of an expert to help them navigate through those challenging times when books, blogs or websites just don’t do the trick.

Despite our cultural belief that mothering is the most important job in the world, it’s still one that typically receives the least amount of support.

“We have this misconception that once we are pregnant, we should know it all,” says Agnes Mayer, The Mama Coach in the Tri-Cities. “And, to top it off social media can make us feel even more insecure about our parenting skills.”

Then factor in the fact that many young families today are often isolated, without the daily exposure to close family, who were there to

First off, says Mayer, do not confuse mama coaches with parent coaches. Unlike parent coaches, who support parents on a variety of parenting issues, like child behaviour problems or parenting during a crisis, Mama coaches are RN’s who assess baby’s needs and work with Mamas to help them achieve their goals.

“We aren’t teaching them how to parent, but how to handle motherhood and teach their baby basic skills like breastfeeding and sleeping,” explains Mayer.

The Mama Coach is a national team of Registered Nurses who use evidence-based practice, and a good dose of compassion to help make motherhood and parenthood easier for new moms. In a nutshell, childrearing coaching is about embracing motherhood and acknowledging the unique challenges that parenthood can bring.

Coaches use their experience as qualified health care professionals to provide moms support, based on their specific parenting goals,

and to bring understanding to make meeting those goals easier.

“Mama coaches provide sleep consultation, lactation counselling, postpartum and newborn support, prenatal classes (both private in-house and group workshops), as well as CPR and choking workshops,” explains the mom of two, who spent 15 years as an RN working in labour and delivery, before becoming a Mama Coach.

Meg Mercer attended one of Mayer’s CPR and choking workshops, because as she says: “I knew nothing about CPR or the Heimlich maneuver and I was a bit anxious about how to protect my

baby if she ever choked, and after just 1.5 hours I truly feel really confident.”

Global Traffic Reporter, Kaitlyn Herbst, turned to Mayer for help while pregnant.

“I was more than a little nervous about giving birth for the first time and taking care of a tiny baby, but I now feel like I have the skills, and more importantly the support, to tackle anything,” says Herbst. “Agnes was a huge help and my fiancé kept saying after she left ‘I’m so glad we did that babes’.”

Like doctors of yesteryear, all Mama coaches conduct home visits.

During private visits, coaches comprehensively look at how the new mom is feeding, and then looks at baby’s development, weight gain, and the circadian rhythm to determine the best way to find sleep for little ones.

In the end, Mayer says all coaches endeavor to be that “village for parents.”

“Mama coaches are RNs, but they are also all moms,” says Mayer. “Coaches are there to help parents navigate parenting challenges.” n

I

n the modern world where everything seems to be shrinking – from apartments to appliances to cars – the luxury of having a large garden to tend to is no longer the norm. To address these smaller spaces, Amsterdam Greenhouses & Garden Centre - celebrating 40 years in business – has year-round container gardening options for people who want to keep their green thumbs active, and for garden hobbyists who are just starting out.

Some people prefer permanent plantings using a combination of shrubs, perennials, and even bulbs for colour throughout the year.”

DIY Haven With the increasing interest in DIY projects, Amsterdam Garden Centre offers over 80 gardening seminars and workshops each year. The seminars are held almost every week, with specialty seasonal classes including Succulent Planter, Veggie Gardening, and Hanging Basket Workshops in the spring, and Wreath Making and Whoville Tree Workshops during the holiday season. She adds, “We offer classes for all ages and skill levels.”

or over five years, Port Moody Flowers has been providing fresh, inspiring and swoon worthy arrangements for customers, whether it is to celebrate a special occasion, or simply to surprise a family member or significant other with beautiful flowers.

“We want to set ourselves apart from other floral locations with our combined 20 plus years in the industry of selecting good growers and good-quality plants,” says Karen Smecher, owner. “Our staff of five women and one man are on track with trendy designs and they have the ability to create new looks that are sought after. “At Christmas we did a Swag Making class which was very successful. On March 24th we are holding another workshop class for Succulent Planter Box Arrangements.”

She says her favourite task to work on, and the store’s most frequent request, are sympathy arrangements.

“We really are inspired when people come to us and trust us to do an arrangement to celebrate life in honour of a loved one’s memory. We always ask if the person had any favourite flowers or colours to connect with what the family wants to convey, then we build on that. If the stress can be relieved momentarily with something beautiful that is dedicated to that person, I think it helps with the grieving process.”

CHEF’S SECRETS TRI-CITIES CHEFS DISH THEIR FAVOURITE RECIPES

MELANZANE MBUTTUNATE (STUFFED EGGPLANT) Serves 6

A

t Spacca Napoli we have our famous eggplant Parmigiana, another traditional dish of Napoli using tomato and fried eggplant. Though I am proud of it and its popularity, this Melanzane Mbuttunate dates back centuries in the homes of Cilentano people and resonates within me as an emotional dish my mama still makes today, using the fresh ingredients from my father’s garden. Establishing my roots and my restaurant here in the Tri-Cities, I had to source the freshest organic ingredients to keep the flavours of home close to me, and when in season I visit the Tri-City Farmers Markets. From what has been a muscle memory dish for me, I am happy to share my recipe with my community – you can enjoy this as an everyday dish or as an accompaniment to a dinner party.

Extra points!

My girlfriend and Restaurant Manager at Spacca Napoli, Harriet Whitecross, would suggest to pair this dish with a traditional wine from my region of Campagna – for authenticity seek out the unknown varietals – try an Aglianico for red or Greco di Tufo for white.

When at home in Cilento, my family and I make our own tomato sauce fresh and bottle it for the year, but I have also found that Strianese San Marzano DOP tomatoes are accessible and flavourful for this recipe.

Otherwise if you are up to the challenge, seek some organic tomatoes and make the sauce from scratch.

Left over stuffing! Form a small ball and fry that too to add into the top sauce.

Also for a more authentic flavour I would use Extra Virgin Olive oil to fry the eggplant instead of sunflower oil.

INGREDIENTS Half white onion 500g organic eggplant (long) or 3 eggplants 75g Fine ground Parmigiano Reggiano cheese 75g Fine ground Pecorino Cheese 50g white bread filling, not crust 2 eggs 1 piece clean garlic clove 3 stalks parsley Salt and pepper Half litre DOP tomato sauce Extra virgin olive oil 1 bottle sunflower oil Basil for garnish METHOD 1. W ash and dry the eggplant, then with the eggplant flat to the surface, cut each slice horizontally roughly into 1-inch each into circles. Do this with all the eggplant then go back to each individual slice where you will cut in half but not completely through. This will create your pocket for the stuffing later.

2. T o prepare the filling: In a bowl combine the cheeses then rub the white bread into small fine pieces. With a fork fold in the whole eggs. Once the eggs are combined, you will use a fine grater to grate the garlic in the mixture adding a pinch of salt and pepper after to season the filling. Roughly chop your parsley and throw that in while still mixing, until you feel the filling is evenly integrated, creating a thick paste.

3. S tuffing! Using a fork, fill the paste into the eggplant slices. Fill without breaking the inner slice and remove the overflow from the sides. Lay out on a baking sheet

LEMONGRASS SEARED TUNA TATAKI WITH PAPAYA COLESLAW Serves 4 INGREDIENTS Papaya coleslaw: 8oz elephant papaya, julienne 2oz Japanese green radish, julienne 4oz carrot AND cucumber, julienne 1/2 cup NaGo Cracked Seasame Miso Dressing Tuna Tataki: 1 loin BC Albacore tuna 1/2tsp lemongrass powder 1tsp salt and 1/2tsp pepper 1/2 cup Panko crumbs

until ready to fry. *Be sure not to over stuff! The filling expands when fried* I n a pot, pour in the sunflower oil and bring up to 180 degrees. There should be enough oil in the base that when we begin to fry the eggplant, they will be immersed in the oil. My personal opinion and what you will find traditionally, is to use Extra Virgin Olive oil, not sunflower oil.

N ow begin to fry all the stuffed pieces until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil onto absorbent paper to remove excess oil.

O n a low flame have your pot ready with few tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive oil heating.

Meanwhile, slice half a white onion, peel the outer layer off and place core down in the pot over the oil.

The oil will begin to take the flavour from the onion.

When the onion begins to cook through, add the tomato sauce bringing to the boil, stir in a pinch of salt and pinch of sugar.

O nce the sauce is at the boil, lightly add in your eggplant pieces. Using a wooden spoon, turn the pieces to cook but being careful not to break them.

Add just a pinch of salt in the sauce. After 10 minutes your flavour components have amalgamated and you are ready to serve!

My suggestion to serve would be to scoop the eggplant pieces on your desired plate – don’t drain all the sauce, the more the better! Garnish with fresh basil leaves and if you so desire, add a sprinkle of parmesan.  – Buon appetito! Marco Cresciullo

Plating: 2tbsp peanut oil 1 bunch baby watercress AND 1 avocado 1/4 cup Japanese mayo 1/4 cup pomegranate molasses METHOD 1. P apaya coleslaw: take all julienne ingredients and toss in dressing.

2. A llow coleslaw to sit in the dressing for 15-20 minutes.

3. T una Tataki: place on a cutting board and trim off the belly meat so that you just have the pure centre cut of loin. (Save the belly to snack on with wasabi!)

4. D ust with salt, pepper, East of EdenTM Lemongrass Powder, then roll in Panko.

5. H eat some peanut or avocado oil in a thick bottomed sauté pan until it is shimmering from the heat.

6. C arefully place the tuna loin into the hot oil and sear on each side just long enough to achieve a crisp golden brown crust. The tuna should be raw inside.

7. O nce all sides are seared, remove from the pan and rest on a clean cutting board for 2 minutes, then cut into 1/4” slices.

8. P lating: Divide baby watercress onto 4 serving plates.

9. P lace a neat pile of coleslaw on top of watercress.

10 A dd some thinly sliced avocado to one side of the plate. Zig-zag a pattern of Japanese mayo on the other, bare side of the plate.

11. P lace 3-4 pieces of tuna, fanned out, over the mayo.

Finally . . . drizzle the entire plate with pomegranate molasses and serve.  – Cheers! Chris Beall

SPINACH BASIL PESTO LINGUINE Serves 4 INGREDIENTS One bunch of fresh spinach, stems removed 150g fresh basil (after stems removed) 5 cloves of fresh garlic 12 cherry tomatoes (cut in half) 50g shelled walnuts 50g Feta cheese 400g fresh linguine pasta 250ml Extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp fresh black pepper All the above ingredients except olive oil and black pepper are BC grown or made products.

METHOD 1. P lace spinach, basil, garlic, walnuts, salt and pepper in a food processor and while the food processor is in pulse mode, slowly add olive oil.

2. A fter the pesto is made, empty it in a glass bowl (pesto in this form can be kept in the fridge for 4-5 days).

3. I n a pot, boil 2 litres of water, and add sea salt to taste, when water comes to a rapid boil, add fresh linguine pasta, gradually stir it and boil for 5-7 minutes (depending of how al dente you prefer).

4. S train the pasta, keep about 1/4 cup of the water used to cook the pasta.

5. Place a pot on the stove, on medium heat, add the cherry tomatoes, then add pesto, leave it for 2 minutes. Add the pasta water, add cooked linguine, toss it, remove from heat, serve in four plates, shred Feta cheese on top. n – Please enjoy! Fred Soofi

Know your farmer, know your food HOPCOTT MEATS IS NOT JUST YOUR AVERAGE BUTCHER SHOP

A

s a third generation Hopcott, Jenn, a freckled redhead, leaves her brothers, Brad and Travis, to do the outdoor farming while she takes the reins of the retail store and bistro. Jenn Hopcott, operations manager, tells me that Hopcott was initially a dairy farm, owned and operated by her grandparents, Fred and Jane Hopcott, in 1932.

It wasn’t until 1957 that Fred had sold his herd and followed his dreams of raising beef cattle. Over the years Fred’s son, Bob, became an active partner in the farm, following his dad’s passion for the industry which he has now passed down to his kids - Jenn, Brad and Travis. To this day, the original dairy barn resides on the property, along with a beautiful neighbouring store showcasing local meats, produce grown on the farm, specialty groceries and local cheese.

“So why know your farmer, know your food?” I ask Jenn Hopcott, referencing their motto on the website. “We’re all about supporting local and even beyond. We really take pride in creating those relationships, guaranteeing that product and traceability; really getting to know the face behind the food,” she says.

The third generation store has been open since 2006, and they focus on bringing back the old-school butcher/ farmer brand. Hopcott Meats not only wants to promote their consistency in their product, service to their customers and support to their fellow local shops, but to reiterate the reliability in their family name.

ince 2002, Inlet Seafoods in Port Moody has been providing customers with fresh, sustainable seafood choices, many of which are available yearround. With almost 39 years of experience as a fishmonger, owner Malcolm McMillan is passionate about his craft. “My uncle had a fish processing plant on Salt Spring Island in the 1970s so when I was a young teenager, I used to stay with him for a few weeks in the summer and work,” he says. “That was my first experience with fish processing, but I have had a love for seafood since I was 10 years old when I would go down to the ocean at Point Grey with my hand line and crab trap.” Today he accredits his success to years of experience and apprenticeships under the guidance of two other well-known seafood purveyors in Metro Vancouver.

McMillan says today his main focus at Inlet Seafoods is on wild Pacific salmon and halibut, and other local seafood. “Salmon is a huge part of

our business, with both Chinook and Sockeye. What differentiates us from a grocery store is we offer wild, line-caught Chinook salmon year round from Haida Gwaii. For most of the year it is frozen at sea, then fresh when it’s available. Our Sockeye salmon is line-caught fish from Johnstone Strait and the Stikine River. Although it is more expensive than net-caught Alaskan fish, the taste and the quality is far superior.”

Gourmet dining, at home Beyond the options of having imported Hawaiian Ahi Tuna or Chilean Sea Bass for dinner, the homemade products at Inlet Seafoods have been a big hit with customers. “We make our own Salmon Wellingtons and Halibut Wellingtons, crab cakes, prawn cakes, ceviches, smoked salmon pâté, as well as cocktail and tartar sauce,” says McMillan. “We are also happy to provide simple methods of preparing and cooking our products for our customers.”

While Inlet Seafoods does not do cooking classes in-house, McMillan has collaborated with Eden West Gourmet in Port Moody. “I was invited to do a class with their chef where we did halibut and spot prawns. I spoke about the fish, and chef Chris Beall did the cooking. It was a lot of fun.”

McMillan is proud of the fact that Inlet Seafoods has a couple of longterm staff members who have been with the company almost since opening day. “My two daughters have also worked here off and on, and continue to do so, so it really is a family business,” he says.

Filling the void JENNIFER MCKINNON FINDS INNER PEACE BY GIVING BACK

T

he urge to give back to one’s community is informed by many factors, but in the case of Jennifer McKinnon, her involvement with the Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise, the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, and other local venues stemmed from a deep seated feeling that something was missing in her life.

McKinnon, a former wellness provider who recently launched her own human resources business, Creative Culture, explains, “It really hit home for me in 2014. That was when my partner, Greg Garrison, invited me to a morning meeting of his rotary, claiming that because I liked volunteering I would love this. I was a single mom at the time and had no idea what to expect; but the moment I walked through the door, the sense of fellowship was overwhelming.

“All of these rotary members, who spent so much time fulfilling local needs and involving themselves in international causes – with unfailing energy and good cheer – reinforced my belief that if you give

the therapy gave them enjoyment and great conversations was a humbling experience, and from there I was eager to get involved in other causes.”

Joining the Rotary Club of Coquitlam Sunrise was yet another outcome of McKinnon’s journey as an active community member; she was already committed as PAC president for her daughter’s school, as well as a volunteer for Share Family & Community Services, a non-profit, community based organization providing leadership and programs in response to the social needs of the residents of the TriCities, New Westminster, and adjacent communities.

A constant companion to her volunteer work was her daughter, Marissa. “Organizations such as the rotary were unfailingly kind and attentive to her, and now that she’s a teen she’s done volunteer work of her own, collecting donations on behalf of Share,” says McKinnon.

“My mother, Gwen Campbell, has also begun volunteering now that she’s retired. So maybe the urge to give back runs in the family.”

But unlike so many communityminded people, McKinnon, 38, fell into the spirit of giving back almost by accident rather than being taught the value by her parents. “I was 19 when I got my wellness certificate in Victoria, and as I was walking along the street I passed a senior’s home and on impulse walked in and offered my services as a masseuse,” she recalls. “They said yes, and I wound up working with the residents. The fact that

The conversation is cracked OPEN CONVERSATION SURROUNDING PERIMENOPAUSE AND MENOPAUSE

e meet at the local coffee shop, and I’ve done my research prior to our meeting, or so I thought.

Shirley Weir, founder of Menopause Chicks, is already there and she is as fabulous and chic as I expected.

As a 38-year-old woman preparing to have a conversation with a 52 year old, I was wondering where my place was interviewing this bestselling author of Mokita – which means all those things we avoid talking about, like the ‘elephant in the room.’ And as it turns out, I was right where I needed to be.

After exchanging pleasantries, I wind up for the obvious question, “How does one become a ‘Menopause Chick’?” as if to state the obvious that the average girl doesn’t grow up with that as a career goal. Between the ages

of 39 and 46, while juggling the demands of a marketing career and motherhood, Weir found herself trying to navigate her own perimenopause journey and she found nothing but frustration in the voyage.

A disappointing visit to Weir’s doctor in her early 40s led her to ‘cracking open the conversation’ (her website’s tag line) on perimenopause and menopause so women would feel more empowered to have meaningful conversations with their health team, their families, and even their co-workers! She exposed a clear gap in society, to which Weir referred to as ‘a very uncrowded space.’

“I felt it was my mission to empower women to navigate perimenopause and menopause with confidence and ease.

I wanted to eradicate the stigma and shame surrounding perimenopause and menopause for myself, for my friends and for my daughter

and her friends when they grow up,” said Weir.

In her book, Mokita: How to Navigate Perimenopause with Confidence & Ease, I love these lines from Weir: “Can you imagine a future where we’ve redefined menopause from something that’s big and ugly, into a conversation women can actually embrace? Where women can learn to understand the opportunities this life phase provides, can easily navigate any of its challenges, and can actually look forward to midlife?”

Weir imagines a time when every 35 year-old woman knows what to expect, and feels prepared for perimenopause and menopause.

The naïve side of me leads to my next question, “What is perimenopause?” Weir is not surprised in the least with my lack of knowledge, probably due to the online statistics that there are 57-million other women such as myself in the same age range in North America who question the same. She tells me that menopause is the one-year anniversary of your last menstrual cycle.

One day!

All this time I thought mood swings, hot flashes and lack of sex drive were menopause, when if fact it’s most likely perimenopause – the phase of life leading up to that one day. It’s different for every woman, a time when hormones

fluctuate and when her body prepares itself for the second half of life! Another tidbit is that not all women suffer the stereotypical experiences of hot flashes and mood swings. Common changes are more likely to include breast tenderness and/or changes to her period (lighter, heavier, irregular or missing for a couple of months and start up again.)

“In order to be our own health advocates, we need to unlearn all of the myths we picked up along the way. I use the analogy that we would never send our kids into puberty without proper education and a ‘heads-up’ on what to expect. Women approaching midlife deserve the same quality information in order to be proactive with our own health,” says Weir.

20% of women sail through perimenopause, 60% experience mild-to-moderate changes as a result of fluctuating hormones, leaving only 20% who truly have their worlds rocked upside down by hormone imbalance. Weir wants women to know that we are not meant to suffer or suck it up. We deserve quality of life, and it takes being your own health advocate in order to be proactive and to find the best journey.

In conclusion to my interview I ask the fun and fearless female in front of me, “What does everyone need to know about perimenopause and menopause?”

“Perimenopause and menopause are not synonyms for suffering,” Weir says without hesitation.

“In fact, there are numerous positives you can expect at midlife, including the opportunity to rock a new no-BS attitude, and embrace your confidence, wisdom and empowerment.”

And, by the way, those experiences (Weir avoids using the word ‘symptoms’ for perimenopause, as it is neither an ailment nor a disease), so highly hyped up in the media, are debunked in her book.

Another misconception is that women don’t even need to be informed or think about menopause until their 50s. Wrong. Women begin the perimenopause transition as early as their midto-late 30s, often without noticing anything or only experiencing mild changes, such as a shift in mood or sleep patterns.

So what’s next for Weir? You can probably bet, with her newfound wisdom and empowerment, another book in the Mokita series.

TWO PORT MOODY ENTREPRENEURS ARE TAKING ON PLASTIC POLLUTION

ort Moody has a new business in town. Not only is it the first of its kind in the Tri-Cities area, but its owners hope it will make a positive difference to the Lower Mainland, and the world.

Port Moody Refillery, located in Newport Village, is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Teresa Johansson and Julie Veres. The idea is based on the simple model of the refill concept; customers bring their containers

in (or purchase them in the store), refill them with locally-sourced personal care or household products, have them weighed, and leave the store knowing that they have done their part to help tackle the world’s plastic problem.

With an estimated one million plastic bottles being bought globally every minute, nearly 90 per cent of plastics in Canada ending up incinerated, or in our

landfills, lakes, parks and oceans, and less than 11 per cent of all plastics being recycled, “every little bit helps,” says Johansson, who also runs The Village Toy Shop in Port Moody.

“We can’t quite pinpoint when the idea came about,” laughs Veres, who runs Tea & Paper Nook in Port Moody, which now shares its space with Port Moody Refillery.

“Neither Teresa or I have a specific background in the environment, but like everyone else, we want to do better to help our planet and the world we leave behind for our kids.”

Johansson distinctly remembers having what she describes as an “Aha moment.” Born on Vancouver Island, she grew up living off grid and worked in early childhood education before purchasing the toy store three years ago. However Veres was a self-proclaimed “city girl” and former flight attendant from Montreal who moved out west with her husband and children to “enjoy nature, the clean air and the wonderful people.”

On November 21, 2018, Johansson decided to test the waters and set up the Instagram account @ portmoodyrefillery. The response was overwhelming.

“Honestly, it almost brings me to tears thinking about the support we received,” she says. In December they launched a rewards-based crowd funding campaign, with the hope of raising enough capital through the collective effort of friends, family, customers, and individual investors to purchase the initial inventory, and within 40 days they exceeded their $10,000 goal.

Having researched local companies that could deliver wholesale products and establishing the shared space in Veres’s shop (which would help keep expenses low and maintain a smaller environmental footprint), it was all systems go.

On February 15, 2019, less than three months after the announcement was made on social media, Port Moody Refillery officially opened its doors.

“We believe it’s the small changes that can make a difference. You don’t have to be perfect, it’s just about doing better,” says Veres.
