While many perceive skin as beauty our focus here at Retouched is on medical dermatology which involves the treatment of acne, allergic dermatitis, alopecia and other disorders.

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME England’s model and body positive advocate Harnaam Kaur and American actress Gabrielle Union live on opposite sides of the globe and appeal to different audiences, but they both have one thing in common – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. In her book I Think We Need More Wine, Union talked about her struggle with infertility, caused by PCOS. Kaur often talks about her hirsutism, another marker of the disorder which is responsible for her big beard, and the many methods she has tried in vain to get rid of it.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects a woman's hormone levels. Women with PCOS produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. This hormone imbalance causes them to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant. PCOS is marked especially by amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation — one or more missed menstrual periods), hirsutism (a condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women), obesity, infertility, and ovarian enlargement. It is initiated by an elevated level of luteinizing hormone, androgen or estrogen which results in an abnormal cycle of gonadotropin release by the pituitary gland.

It’s the onset of these symptoms that will alert your dermatologist to PCOS during a consultation. The disorder is then confirmed via blood tests.

Some girls develop PCOS in their teens; others as adults.

Other symptoms of PCOS include fatigue, low energy, thinning hair or in some cases hair loss, hormonal acne, mood changes including depression and anxiety, headaches and sleep issues.

Sometimes, in seeking assistance for acne and excessive dry scalp (seborrheic), a woman can be diagnosed with PCOS by her dermatologist . In order for the patient to see any change in acne , dry scalp or hirsutism, PCOS has to first be treated.

The disorder is linked to high blood pressure, ovarian cancer, breast cancer and endometriosis. Although there is not yet a cure for the disorder, there are several ways to eliminate the symptoms – nutrition and exercise are chief among them.

PCOS is not treatable but it is manageable as symptoms, which treated, can be decreased or eliminated.

NATIONAL HEALTHY SKIN MONTH November is National Healthy Skin Month! And what better way to celebrate than taking care of your body’s largest organ? When you really think about it, the skin you’re in is much like your favourite article of clothing. You wear it every day, it creases sometimes, sometimes it requires heat (the sun), you use water to get it clean and maintenance leads to longevity. Just as it will do you well to follow the care instructions on the tag of your clothes to ensure proper care – you know, no iron, gentle cycle, wash with like colours, hand wash only – here are some skin rules that will keep you skin glowing, beyond National Health Skin Month.

Hydrate – Inside and outside – drink your eight glasses of water and shower every day. Wash your face every day, especially after exercising. Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water.

Determine your skin type – It really helps in choosing the skin care products that you need. Is your skin oily, dry, combination, sensitive? Talk to one of our dermatologists to find out.

Use an antiperspirant – Forget the deodorant, the antiperspirant reduces sweating.

Examine your skin – Keep an eye out for unusual spots, changes in moles or anything itching and bleeding.

Protect your skin – See shade whenever possible.Wear protective clothing and use water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Prevent blisters and corns – Buy shoes that fit properly and wear socks that wick moisture. A good example of this is nylon.

Moisturize – Do this daily as soon as you come out of the shower and pat down with a towel. Your damp skin actually locks the moisture in.
