History and Culture Center
630 S. Kansas Ave Topeka, Kansas
Located in downtown Topeka, The History and Culture center serves multitude of purposes being right on the corner of 7th and Kansas Ave, It is designed to be light and bright to bring a spotlight to the art gallery on display. It has an outdoor theater to engage people walking in downtown Topeka. It also has many different entrances to get that private vs public feel. This building has multiple spaces including a dance studio, performance hall and an art gallery. The building is split into different wings and floors allowing for the public to engage with the building differently as there are many different buildings located next to the site including, shopping, buisnesses, dining.
Individual Project Spring 2021

Concept
To create Private vs Public feeling I started by splitting the building into two different wings. The second floor was for performances so it was located on top. Splitting the site with the Private wing allowed me to also split the two different green spaces.
With the green spaces forming from the private wing, they formed their own private vs public areas. On the left of the building is the private tucked away green space with access to the outdoors form the offices. While in the middle formed the green space that was also a small outdoor performing venue. This allows for the people inside the building to see and walk around to different views of the outdoor performance while also engaging with the different inside spaces and venues.

Ecological Community Center

0 Indiana Street
Lawrence, Kansas
Located right outside of Burcham park and next to historic Old West Lawrence this building was designed to be in collaboration with Friends of the Kaw, and area universities to support ecological research and preserve wildlife. The building wraps around a large garden space to encapsulate it and allow each building room to view it and study the wildlife. Also having the building located on a residential street gives the center the opportunity to further engage the community with river and wildlife health and advocacy.

Designing and Modeling

My main focus was encapsulating the greenery space within my building. To do this I knew I wanted my building to have some sort of wrapping envelope aspect. My process models explored different shapes and rooftop features that I could potentially use to capture the greenery space.

The buildings walls were larger to helped divided up the spaces and create tectonics along the site. The walls would also have built in features for the students and teachers to use as they pleased.

To create thermal comfort within the different rooms I added louvers along the west side of the building as the east side was shaded by trees from burcham park.

Clinton Marina Project

Clinton Lake
Lawrence, Kansas
Located on the Clinton lake inside of Clinton State Park, The Clinton Marina Project took place directly on the Marina. Nestled right in between all of the neighboring boat docks was where our studio project took place. Our project was designed to hold varied events at the Clinton Marina. Working back and forth with the owner of the marina our studio was tasked with designing a space that would bring life to the marina and give an area for events or lounging to occur for newcomers or long time returning customers. It is composed of a U-orriented shading structure with a stage on one side and a serving area on the other. Having them on different sides allow the customers to move freely throughout the space of varied seating options and bring life to the marina.
Studio-led Project Fall 2022
Prof. Nils Gore

As a class we went through multiple design phases that included many pin ups and remaking the shading structure.
Clients were very involved in the project and we had many meetings with them going back and forth about different design ideas and iterations. Taught me the importance of a good client relationship

We got to learn about the dock structure and incorporate that into our design
Attended tours of some different metal shaping and fabricating companies (Shaped Steel,Standard Sheet Metal) to learn more about what they do and redesigned the structure based on limitations they gave us.

Pin Ups

This class focused around DESIGN - BUILD allowed me to learn some new skills that I would’ve never thought I’d get the opportuni ty to do. My main role in this class was welding together the backdrop to the stage and other brackets. I have some previous rience with a multitude of metal working machines from my highschool classes that I took so I was thrilled to get to learn even Getting to fabricate and weld different parts of the project gave me a new perspective and appreciation of the craftsmanship goes into different trades.

Typography and Printing in Italy
Study Abroad throughout Italy
Venice, Milan, Cornuda, Turin, Florence

As a class we traveled throughout Italy visiting different art museums, workshops, churches, and many other historical buildings/landmarks. Our main focus was learning about typefaces over the course of history. I got to indulge in Italy’s culture and learn a ton about history and specifically art history. We went to two different workshops where as a class we got to make books and learn how to use old type press machines. We also got tours from different people who taught us history of certain typefaces and gave us tours of the cities.

Workshop: T I P O T E C A
One of our workshops was in Cornuda, Italy. A small town where we got to stay at a winery on top of a hill. We would walk multiple miles to get to the shop each day and work on making a book with all of the old type faces. Each person was tasked with making a haiku about the trip so far and create their own page of the book. Mine was about food because I couldn’t get enough of the AMAZING Italian cuisine and speedboats because I was so excited to finally get to ride in one when we stayed in Venice.
