The COVID-19 pandemic has left a profound impact on communities across Texas, with the city of Dallas being no exception. This disruption has only compounded existing issues, including poverty, food insecurity, and housing.

Inequities in our healthcare and economic systems have left the most vulnerable, often people of color, underserved. Safety net clinics play a critical role in bridging the healthcare gap, as many in these communities are uninsured. These clinics serve as a lifeline, offering vital care to those who would otherwise be left without access to essential services.

What We Did Together In Dallas, a team of Texas A&M medical students meticulously planned and executed the Agape Clinic Health Fair on September 16th, 2023, in collaboration with the Agape Clinic, a student-led clinic that annually assists thousands of uninsured patients. The event aimed to promote equity, collaboration, and trust and was met with enthusiastic participation, with over 300 attendees.

Executive Summary

This collaboration involved many partner organizations who provided services and guidance on hosting this event for the first time. We thank the East Dallas Christian Church and the community for their help.

We look forward to future efforts.

Alongside clinics, health fairs play a pivotal role in ensuring that individuals who are typically excluded from the healthcare system can access preventive health screenings, education, and other resources.

What We Learned

framework to maximize buy-in across varied sectors

Invite expertise from diverse fields, incorporating private-public partnerships for maximum reach Leverage existing relationships rooted in trust (e.g. community leaders, culturally-significant sites) and prioritize open communication, allowing for efficient program implementation

Engage communities to ensure recipients are representative of those most adversely impacted and would benefit from consensual, community-based intervention Conduct in-language interviews with community members to better understand their needs and the impact of prospective programs on health outcomes Design programs around bridging gaps in access, while ensuring those structurally marginalized based on demographic factors (e.g. race, SES) are included in planning and implementation.
