My road to design was never a straight one, but even so from what I’ve learned and the experiences I have had, I know that this is where I should be and having a career in design is how I want to live my life. As a child I’ve always been of the curious kinds, always wanting to know how things work. I pull apart things, put them back together.

JacketAp Kitchen Apron

To Design an apron for my mother that would help protect her hands from burns.

Design Process Designs were explored in which the basic function of the apron is not compromised and it is easy to wear and remove. The mittens would be readily accessible and would not hinder with any kitchen task or cause any problems.

Problems • Wearing apron only half way does not ensure complete protection.

• Mittens are not easy to put on and take off in between cooking.

• Mittens are not always readily close by for sudden use.

• Finds it a hassle to put on & remove mittens during work.

• Wears a regular apron by tying it only at the waist.

Nested Clip Ergonomic Analysis

Brief

Problem

To re-design the binder clip, an office stationary that has been in use for a long time, into a product that is much easier and more comfortable to use.

Looking at the ergonomics of the binder clip, the handle form has been designed such that it can be held between the thumb and the other fingers. The base of the clip is designed such that the handle can easily be guided in and out of it. The handle being made out of a metal wire poses a problem where it digs into the flesh when pressed too hard.

Use The binder clip comes in many sizes and is used to hold together bundles of paper.

The clip is called Nested Clip because the design is such that there is a smaller clip nested inside the main clip.

The clipping mechanism has been modified that for smaller bundles, the clip can be slided in with ease. Whereas for for larger bundles, the clip can be opened up further without much strain.

Description ‘Unwind’ is a furniture & lighting set that can be used as a complete set or as individual units. Traditional craft is interwoven with modern interpretations through new forms, materials and techniques in this design.

Versofa is a sofa bed that has mutlitple configurations for both its sofa and bed forms. The different forms help the user set it’s position according to what is best needed for its use. The configurations are changed by changing the positions of its backrest by locking them in new positions using a srewing mechanism. Additional screws or tools are not required to make this change.

Magz Table is a side table that serves the function of a side table to store reading material or any other object that one might need close by when seated or lying down.

It has a net like structure under the table where users can quickly and easily store any of the items, rather than neatly arrange them.

Silo Lite is a table lamp that has a wooden frame and a shade that is made from coir. The coir shade can be expanded or contracted to control the intensity of the light.

Othu-Chair- El Material & Form

Description Othu-Chair-El' derived from the Malayalam word othucheral means a gathering of a group of people for leisure. People are connected through the stories that pops up among different communities or groups, or even a thought that is shared, or perhaps a way of life that everyone aims for. A single story that shares many lives among many people and brings them together, always finding ways to come together no matter their differences.

The handicrafts in India tell such stories too. They too come together and change the way people are brought together.

Exploration

Final Design Othu-Chair-El is a center table that can function as a table alone and also split up into two stools and a smaller table. The idea is to bring a furniture piece that is informal in its function. Most commonly in gatherings with friends or family, one always goes looking for an extra chair or two to accommodate everyone. Why go looking for an extra seat when you could just sit on the table. This table can be used by itself or along with other sofa sets. The smaller table has two lower platforms on opposite sides which can be used as a foot rest when the individual may need to put their feet up.

Idea The design for tea-time coaster set was arrived at when thinking of a way to know the time for tea.

Design Details The coasters have cutouts that represent the time a user has tea, or any other beverage. The time chosen is the approximate time the user has tea during the morning, evening and night.
