Dear Friends and Supporters:

Welcome to our autumn issue of Footprints. Our theme is something we think the entire Hallahan family understands: See the love, feel the love, share the love.

Why this theme?

Walk through the front door of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School at any time of the day and you can feel it – there is a warmth and positivity that flows over you. This is a place where our young women, our faculty and staff, and our visitors, feel safe and secure. They feel supported. They feel encouraged. They feel loved.

See the love all around you at Hallahan – in our beautiful new chapel; in the faces of our young women as they set, work towards, and achieve their goals; and in our faculty and staff, who strive each day to bring out the best in our students and each other.

From our very beginnings at Hallahan, we have relied on the love and support of those who believed in and wanted young women to achieve their dreams. As you turn the pages of Footprints, you will see that this love and support continues here today. Our alumnae provide not only monetary support – and we would love to have more of you involved – but they mentor our young women, and provide sterling examples of leadership, strength, and character.

You will learn that a Hallahan girl grows and evolves into a successful, and faithfully committed, woman.

In these pages, you’ll read about our students.

These young women are doing extraordinary things each and every day. I continue to be amazed by their creativity, intelligence, and work ethic. I also am impressed by their kindness, charity, and enormous desire to make a difference in this world. I think these last three are the qualities I admire most!

In this issue of Footprints, you will see Hallahan’s many faces of love: through faith, friendship, honesty, and sacrifice. These provide the base of the Hallahan family, from our students, to our faculty and staff, alumnae, and among those who choose to support our efforts.

We are grateful to all of you who support the John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School and our efforts to educate women with faith, purpose, and vision. We believe that Hallahan helps to develop the intellectual, spiritual, and emotional potential of each of our students, and does so within a diverse Catholic academic community.

“Your Word Is a Lamp for My Feet…”

Those are the first few words on the door to our newly renovated and rededicated chapel: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.

I make a solemn vow to observe your righteous judgments. I am very much afflicted, Lord. Give me life in accord with your word. Accept my freely offered praise. Lord, teach me your judgments.”

– Psalm 119: 105-108 The redesigned interior space of the chapel provides a central focus to the altar and tabernacle. The modernized and airy chapel is the heart of our school. It is a place where students, alumnae, staff, and visitors can find peace and a place of prayer – this is a sacred place set aside for worship and quiet reflection.

The chapel renovation project began simply, with the need to replace worn carpet in 2013.

That simple need blossomed into a complete revitalization of our beloved chapel, spearheaded by lead donations from Diane McAndrews ’69 and Catherine Driscoll.

Cost overruns initially delayed the renovation project, but it was through the generosity and wishes of another beloved alumna, Mary Mackey Cain ’41 and her family, the chapel finally was completed.

While the McAndrew, Driscoll and Cain families provided the bricks and mortar, our devoted alumnae and benefactors filled our sacred space with refreshed stained glass windows, a beautiful new altar, re-upholstered chairs, and a redesigned confessional.

On April 6, 2017, our chapel was dedicated with a beautiful Mass celebrated by The Most Reverend Bishop Michael J. Fitzgerald, who oversees Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Mass was live-streamed, particularly for Hallahan alumnae who were unable to attend, and for those students and other guests who were unable to fit into the chapel and were seated in the school gymnasium and auditorium, respectively, for the Mass. Holy Communion was distributed in the gymnasium and auditorium, as well as in the chapel.

Chistopher Mominey, Chief Operating Officer, AOP, welcomes everyone to the chapel dedication.

A reception followed the 11:00 am Mass, although Bishop Fitzgerald met with significant donors in a private reception at 9:30 am.

Mrs. Denise Kassekert, Hallahan President said, “Our chapel is our heart and our soul. It is the core of our being. Our Catholicism is the reason we are here today, and why we have been here for more than 115 years. We are thrilled to celebrate its revitalization. This is a great moment for the entire Hallahan community. We are forever grateful to all of our donors who made this project possible through their generosity, love, and patience.”

Principal’s Notes

School Administration

by Micki Beachy As school began in September, the weather seemed to predict an auspicious beginning for the 2018 school year. Instead of hot, steamy and ninety, it was cool, dry and in the seventies. Our students arrived with crisp new uniforms and eager smiling faces. Our staff, happy to begin the year on time, was rested and eager to start the work of educating our students – helping them lay the foundation for their futures.

This year, we have one hundred and five brightfaced fresh-women who entered the Hallahan halls, and a larger than normal freshman class of teachers. The English department welcomed Mrs. Kate Tsakiris and Mrs. Kristin Kraunelis, while world languages greeted the return of Mr. Marco Tesei. Social studies has grown by one member this year with the arrival of Mr. Adam Richwine, a St. Joseph’s University ACE teacher. Theology and math also added new faces: Mr. James Falconer and Mr. Michael diPilla, respectively. Another exciting addition to the faculty this year is Ms. Ellen Frazier, our brass instructor. Ms. Frazier is offering classes to students interested in learning brass instruments. We welcomed each of our new teachers to Hallahan, and are grateful for our phenomenal staff of veteran teachers.

Our students have the opportunity to experience new teachers as well as new courses, this year.

New to our in-house classes are statistics, public speaking/professional writing, media literacy/ current events, and Latin II. Hallahan also is partnering with an online Catholic educational institution, Jesuit Virtual Learning Academy (JVLA), as well as with Cabrini and Arcadia Universities. The number of students selecting

classes at JVLA has more than doubled, with 19 students enrolling in such diverse courses as AP Calculus BC, AP Spanish IV, AP Computer Science, Italian 2, AP Psychology, AP Comparative Government, and Model UN. Cabrini is offering a class in Criminology this fall, and will offer an additional class in the spring. We are continuing our partnership with the University of the Arts, participating in their Spark, Fuel, Ignite STEAM project.

The offerings available from various sources and multiple formats affords Hallahan students the ability to experience the great spirit and camaraderie of the sisterhood, while gaining a taste of world-class opportunities in education.

As this year progresses, I will share some of the amazing experiences I have as I walk the halls of Hallahan. Even in the first few days of school, I observed students engaged in labs and mastering the graphing calculator. I have seen our young women learning how to track their own progress using goals and scales, and discovering the unique relationship between great literature and great art. In just the first few days of school, our students discussed sustainability, smart building, and primary source documents. They tried speaking extemporaneously in front of their classmates on an impromptu topic, and applied close-reading strategies to learning history. I have been so excited by the first snippets of observations as another new school year begins.

Love and Sharing – the Hallahan Way! Sometimes, life goes awry. Accidents and illnesses happen and can leave a family in a difficult financial situation over which they have no control.

Families often find themselves having to make a hard decision to remove a student from Hallahan. We never want to see that happen. You can share your love for Hallahan by sponsoring a student, so all of our young women can continue their education the Hallahan way.

Students like Katerina Evangelou, a member of the Hallahan Class of 2017, knows exactly what it means to have life go awry.

In 2015, Katerina’s father became ill. In addition to the emotional toll, the ever-growing pile of medical bills threatened Katerina’s ability to stay at Hallahan. A call from Katerina’s mother to Mrs. Kassekert led to the generous assistance of Theresa Letterie Carfagno, Ed.D., a Hallahan graduate from the class of 1959, and an Assistant Professor of Education at Chestnut Hill College, who wanted to ensure Katerina stayed at Hallahan.

“Education is very important to me,” explained Dr. Carfagno, “I have spent my entire adult life teaching and working in the field of education.”

Katerina believes that Dr. Carfagno truly has helped her whole family. “My father instantly felt relieved knowing he would not be struggling with both hospital bills and his daughter’s

education,” explained Katerina. “She has not only helped me financially when I was struggling the most, but has changed my outlook on the future. I felt even more motivated to pursue my future endeavors.”

In June 2017, Katerina graduated third in her class, receiving a scholarship to attend Drexel University, where she plans on obtaining a degree in environmental science with a minor in writing. Katerina received several other awards and scholarships at graduation, including the Mayoral Scholarship, the Mary D. Coates Summa Summarum award, overall excellence in English, overall excellence in Spanish, overall excellence in Theology, and an award for being the president of the science club. Additionally, Katerina received the Alumnae Association Sister Rose Anita award for outstanding excellence in English, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia academic scholar award.

“I now plan on working hard in all of my studies at Drexel,” said Katerina. “I could not have achieved any of this without Dr. Carfagno's help.

I can't thank her enough.”

Dr. Carfagno is committed to Hallahan. “It is my gift to Hallahan to assist one of our students each year to achieve their goals via their education in a field of their choice,” she said.

A STEM Education for Today…and Tomorrow!

The World Economic Forum’s 2016 Global Gender Gap Report noted that just 16% of all female students graduate with STEM degrees, as compared to 30% of all male students. The report explained that there are a number of factors influencing the disparity, including gender stereotypes and a lack of female role models who have advanced in the field. Jobs in STEM-related fields typically require STEM-related degrees or relevant training. The report hypothesizes that the low rate of girls completing STEM education leads to an underrepresentation of women in these high-growth industries.

At John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School, we intend to provide our young women with the education and opportunities they need to be able to get the necessary degrees and training to ensure they are qualified for STEM-related careers. We are preparing our young women for the future – their future.

Students in the Robotics class thank Robert Juliano, Vice President of Corporate Giving, Beneficial Bank, for a recent donation to the program.

Quintile, because the girls who were participating were involved in a number of different sports. “When we did meet,” said Mrs. Quintile, “it just felt like we never had enough time.”

Noting interest from the girls, and understanding time commitments, Mrs. Beachy approached Mrs. Margaret Goldschmidt, Science Department Chairperson and a Hallahan alumna, and Mrs. Quintile, about starting a robotics class. The 2016-2107 school year was the first year for the class, which attracted 15 students.

Mrs. Quintile explained that the class is a project-based environment. The girls work first in groups, and then eventually individually, in constructing a K’Nex robot. In the current class, there are 16 students, which Mrs. Quintile said is the ideal size for learning.

The Rise of Robotics at Hallahan Hallahan started a Robotics Club three years ago, with just a few students who were interested in the topic. It was difficult to hold weekly meetings, according to Robotics Instructor Joanne

Even though it is a young program, the robotics students competed in the SeaGlide competition in March 2017, which was sponsored by Temple University, the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Society of Naval Engineers, and the

Naval Surface Warfare Center-Philadelphia Division.

The objective of the Greater Philadelphia SeaGlide Program is to introduce high school students to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using the SeaGlide model. These AUVs use a computer program to intake and exhaust water into the structure, which enables the gliders to sink and float in the water. The purpose of the program is to expand the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) programs of high school students.

The competition was divided into three sections: research paper (white paper), product presentation (commercial), and performance demonstration. There were four awards associated with the SeaGlide completion: Pool Performance, Video Presentation, White Paper, and Overall winner.

AN ACADEMIC STORY

Studying Forensics Hallahan’s Forensic Science class is designed to be a study of laboratory techniques used by forensic scientists in analyzing crimes. The course includes the study of analytical chemistry, fingerprinting, DNA analysis, crime scene management, and investigative procedures. Students discuss case studies of actual crimes and learn how to lift latent fingerprints, shoeprints, lip prints, and collect evidence. They also learn the rudiments of fiber and hair analysis, along with that of other trace evidence.

Mrs. Goldschmidt said the students gain handson experience in collecting and analyzing various types of criminal evidence. “Our crime scenes include topics ranging from drug analysis and ballistics, to blood spatter,” explained Mrs. Goldschmidt. She said that Hallahan’s city location enables access to the police, crime labs and local courts. “We have significant resources right here near the school,” said Mrs. Goldschmidt.

“Our course includes guest speakers from the Philadelphia Police crime scene units, as well as visits to Philadelphia Crime Laboratories and the Common Pleas Court, where students observe actual criminal proceedings.”

These activities help the students to better understand the important role science plays in today’s criminal investigations. It also exposes them to various career possibilities in the numerous related fields. Mrs. Goldschmidt said that a visit to one of the courtrooms last year is the reason one of Hallahan’s alumnae is working for one of the judges in the Common Pleas Court.

Hallahan students are special. They truly understand their education is a gift. You can see the love in them as so many work to pay that gift forward in their communities and throughout the world.

Student-founded Charity In 2009, Saramia Suarez, Hallahan Class of 2017, founded her own charity – Project Christmas Angel – at just eleven years of age!

The daughter of Kelly and Michael Suarez, Saramia attended St. George Elementary School, where she learned about giving back to the community. While in school, Saramia volunteered at the local Senior Home, playing checkers, delivering snacks, and just being a sounding board for those who lived there. When it came time for Saramia’s Confirmation, she wanted to do something for her community that would have a lasting impact. At the time, the economy was bleak for the “blue collar” workers in her community.

Coming from a family of union workers, Saramia was aware of day-today struggles. And so, Project Christmas Angel was born.

In the first year, Saramia enlisted the help of some small local businesses, organized a fundraiser with the help of a local café, and was able to provide six local families in need

with a special Christmas. Saramia said the experience was overwhelming, so she continued her efforts, working tirelessly to raise money, toys, gift certificates, and other types of donations.

Christmas 2016 marked Project Christmas Angel’s eighth anniversary, and the organization was able to provide 38 families, and more than 130 children, with a very special Christmas.

Saramia received the 2017 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her work with Project Christmas Angel. This prestigious award honors young volunteers across the country who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to serving their community. To date, Saramia's charity, Project Christmas Angel, has raised more than $5,000, and provided 215 families in need with toys and gift cards. Saramia was presented with a Senate Proclamation recognizing her hard work and determination!

Saramia was a member of the Hallahan Ambassador’s Club and a recipient of the Maguire Foundation Scholarship, Hallahan Alumnae Scholarship, Mary McMichan Legacy Award and Patti Henry Scholarship Award.

She also is a long-time member of PAL Positive Images. Additionally, Saramia received a $20,000 scholarship from Widner University and NBC10 for her positive leadership skills and efforts to give back to her community. She also represented the PAL Center at the 2016 PAL Day at City Hall where she was Mayor Jim Kenney’s Chief of Staff for a day.

Providing Medical Services Abroad Bianca Gonzalez, Hallahan Class of 2018, spent the month of July 2017, in Chitwan, Nepal, with a company called Projects Abroad, volunteering at local hospitals and schools with a specialized medical program for high school students. The program is designed to empower local communities by improving standards of health through awareness, prevention, and treatment.

Between April and May 2015, two devastating earthquakes struck Nepal, resulting in a significant loss of life and injuries. The earthquake damaged infrastructure, destroying 446 healthcare facilities and damaging 765. By August 2015, 99% of these healthcare facilities had resumed seeing patients, but many, many services remained disrupted.

STUDENTS IN ACTION

Nepal has an infant mortality rate of 38.71 deaths per 1,000 live births; considerably higher than most developed countries. Nutritional deficiencies are found in up to 75% of all mothers, and child malnutrition is still prevalent.

Although many infectious diseases are preventable, they remain the second greatest cause of disease in Nepal. Only an estimated 37% of the population have access to safe drinking water and only 6% to proper sanitation facilities.

While volunteering with the program, Bianca typically worked from 8 am until 3 pm with lectures and classes given by local medical professionals. “As a Projects Abroad Medicine intern in Nepal,” explained Bianca, “you could work in a wide variety of settings to gain medical expe-

rience abroad.” She said that student interns can work at medical facilities in and around Kathmandu or in the region of Chitwan, which is about a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu.

“We have medical placement in hospitals and rehabilitation centers for disabled children in the Kathmandu Valley or Chitwan,” noted Bianca.

“The placement can involve a combination of working with doctors and helping to provide care and rehabilitation services.” She explained that some of the placements were located in the leading referral centers for the functional mobility of physically disabled children. Most of the cases are neglected orthopedic conditions, such as spinal injuries, or are related to cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Placements also were available in a center dedicated to providing the best available care in the field of trauma, orthopedics, and rehabilitation.

Bianca said that interns in Chitwan can work at a large teaching hospital that provides intensive care, emergency, and highly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic services at comparatively low prices, with the aim of best serving the local community. She said that this setting provides a great environment for exposing interns to a wide range of medical procedures and experiences.

Caring for the Sick Closer to Home Brenda Shou, Hallahan Class of 2019, spent the summer volunteering with MANNA, an organization that makes and provides meals for those who are ill. Shou is hoping to get more students from Hallahan involved with MANNA in preparing and packing food.

According to Shou, MANNA was founded in 1990, by seven members of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia to provide nourishment and nutritional support, as well as comfort, to those who had been diagnosed with AIDS. In 2006, MANNA expanded its outreach to neighbors with other critical illnesses – cancer, renal and cardiac disease, and diabetes.

Shou noted that MANNA provides three meals a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year to those at acute nutritional risk due to their illnesses.

She said that MANNA delivers 95,000 meals a month – completely free of charge.

Since John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School opened as Catholic Girls High School in 1911, more than 37,000 young women have earned their diplomas here. They have gone on to dedicate their talents and lives to society, becoming mothers, medical professionals, educators, lawyers, and business executives among many other professions. These women have been educated to be lifelong learners, equipped with the skills and knowledge to be successful in a rapidly changing world.

Who are these women who carry the Hallahan banner?

A Dedicated Woman They are Sister Ida Marie Nicklas, OSF, who graduated from Hallahan in 1945. After spending a year working in a brokerage firm in Philadelphia, Sister Ida joined the Sisters of St.

ALUMNAE IN ACTION

Francis in August of 1946. She continued her education at Villanova University and then went on to Marywood University.

A Woman of Industry

Sister Ida spent 16 years teaching elementary school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, including Allentown Central Catholic High School, where she also coached girls’ basketball to the first ever PIAA State Wide Championship in 1973. Sister was inducted into the Allentown Central Catholic Hall of Fame, with a scholarship named in her honor.

In 1978, Sister Ida came home to Hallahan, where she was assigned to teach business.

Although she left “active” teaching in 1999, in no way has Sister “retired”! She worked in the Advancement Office for two years, then moved on to manage the school store and run the Community Service Corps for Hallahan.

Sister Ida was inducted into the Hallahan Hall of Fame in 2014; an athletic award – the Unsung Hero Award – was created for a senior student athlete and dedicated to Sister in 2016. In honor of her 90th birthday, the school store was dedicated to Sister Ida earlier in 2017. She is so beloved, a birthday post on Facebook attracted 36,000+ views!

Sister Ida is a blessing here at Hallahan and to all of the students who benefitted from her teaching, coaching and example over the years.

They are Janice Maiden, Hallahan Class of 1977. After graduation, Janice earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Philadelphia University and a master’s degree in engineering and business from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. In 2009, she completed the General Management Program (CEDEP), an international business development program at INSEAD, located in Fontaine Bleu, France.

Currently, Janice is Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a leading global supplier of technologies and components for the passenger car, light and heavy-duty commercial and off-highway vehicle markets. In addition to her role as HR executive, Janice oversees the company’s Systems Protection product line.

Janice is known as a well-respected leader, and was named one of the Top 100 Women in

the North American Automotive Industry by Automotive News in 2015.

Previously, Janice was Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Sealing and Gaskets and Systems Protection business unit of Federal-Mogul Powertrain. Before that, she was Vice President and General Manager for Systems Protection, and Global Vice President, Technology and Sales, Systems Protection.

She joined Federal-Mogul in 1993, as a Senior Product Development Engineer.

A Designing Woman

After graduating from Hallahan, Alicia went to Philadelphia University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. After spending some time working, she applied for a scholarship competition sponsored by Vogue Italia in 2014, and won first place in the competition, enabling her to get a master’s degree at DOMUS, the fashion institute in Milan, Italy.

After graduating from DOMUS, Alicia worked in Milan at BMW, Stone Island, and VF Corporation brands, before returning to the U.S. for a year to work for Adidas. Then Timberland called her back to work in Europe.

Alicia said Hallahan served as a community where she developed her leadership skills and evolved as a hardworking, independent, faithfilled, creative young woman. Alicia noted that Hallahan enabled her to take classes for design and sewing at Moore College of Art and Design, which helped channel her creativity and prepared her to pursue design as a career.

A Caring Woman

They are Alicia Pinckney, who graduated from Hallahan in 2009, and currently is designing menswear clothing for Timberland at its international headquarters in Switzerland.

They are Flavia Colgan. The granddaughter of a Hallahan alumna, Flavia and the Colgan Foundation have ensured that The Mary Colgan Scholarship (Flavia’s Grandmother) has afforded a Hallahan education – and an opportunity to “feel the love” – to a number of students.

After graduating from Harvard with a degree in Religion, Flavia returned to Philadelphia, where she ran several statewide political campaigns, and was appointed chief of staff to the AUTUMN 2017

Lieutenant Governor – the first woman and youngest person to serve in the position. She also was a member of Governor Ed Rendell’s senior staff.

Flavia has been an on air commentator for MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News Channel, and CNN. She was a contributor to the “CBS Early Show” and hosted a program for the Travel Channel about miracles called “Miracle Quest.” She has served on the editorial board of the Philadelphia Daily News and regularly contributes to the Huffington Post. Her production company currently produces issue-based documentaries and short films for non-profit organizations.

In addition to leading the education initiatives as a director of the Colgan Foundation, Flavia serves on numerous boards, including The Boys & Girls Club of America, Children Uniting Nations, and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Additionally, Flavia recently joined the board of John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School.

You can use your IRA to make a donation to Hallahan. If you are aged 70 and one-half years or older, you are required to make withdrawals from your IRA or other qualified plans. Consider making a charitable gift to Hallahan by using all or a portion of your mandatory withdrawal amount. Those who are eligible may transfer up to $100,000 – tax free – from an IRA directly to a charity or nonprofit such as John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School.

Our Gift Societies have been developed to enable everyone to participate at a level at which they are comfortable. – Mother Teresa I love the words of Mother Teresa – a true symbol of love and compassion. Our theme of “See the love, feel the love, share the love”, truly is “love in action” in our community of alumnae, parents and benefactors – who believe in the value of investing in a Catholic education. It also is present in our students, faculty and staff who give of themselves in countless ways every day.

This year, your support helped more than 300 students continue their education through our scholarship giving. If you want to see some “love in action”, read the story on page five. You truely will gain a sense of the significance of our scholarship and support programs.

We received the largest estate gift in Hallahan history this year, from Ms. Edna Whitehall, class of 1926. Ms. Whitehall’s gift, and her legacy,

will be remembered as we move forward with much needed updates to our facilities, including the development of a new computer and science lab. At the age of 107, she still remembered the impact of her Hallahan education. We are forever grateful for her generosity.

Our beloved chapel was renovated with love from our many loyal benefactors, including an estate gift from Mrs. Mary Mackey Cain ‘41, which ensured the completion of our beautiful sacred place. If you have not yet been back to see our chapel, please schedule a visit. It is a peaceful oasis for worship in our community.

Our Development Office grew with the addition of Ms. Christine Jenkinson, Hallahan class of 1990. Christine is our new Alumnae Relations Manager. She will be helping our alumnae stay
