Welcome

TO ISSUE #019 2023

2023, it's been a period of personal best for teams, offices & individuals

2023 is making its mark, that’s for sure. We got out of the blocks strong with fantastic sales results, remarkable development for the team and expansion from multiple angles. We’ve moved into Stratford with Asma Brahimi and Muhammad Ahmed fronting the Legion Marketing Group, expanded throughout North Devon thanks to Mark Widnell of Enigma Promotions, strengthened our roots in Swindon with Fidel Nanton’s undeniable leadership, and developed a team in Exeter with thanks to Felix Hardy and Brett Smith.

“We’ve also welcomed some new faces to our administration teams!

•In Bristol, Laura Adamson, our new Event Coordinator, and Billy Slater, our new Recruitment Administrator, are both working with Vik Verma directly for the Empire Marketing Group

•Also in Bristol, Daisy Tucker and Alice Babington are our new Recruitment Administrators within The Promotions Company working with Phil Reid

•In Swindon, Elliesha Chutooree and Lauren Millichimp are Recruitment Administrators for the Monument Promotions team working with Matt Nicholson

Settling in well; glad to have you join us, guys!”

It’s been a period of personal bests for teams,

offices and individuals, too many to mention, but throughout this edition, you’ll notice lots of the team members praising one another and highlighting their wins respectively.

The 2023 event line-up kicked off with an impressive awards ceremony recognising all the achievements from the past year and what a display it was! What better way to start the year than to let everyone know their achievements will not be forgotten, instead, they’ll be celebrated once again. Awards for excellence in sales, excellence in leadership, promotions throughout the Business Development Programme and well-earned merits for our recruitment and event administration teams.

Speaking with James Buckley, the founder and CEO of the organisation, the excitement doesn’t stop there.

“In 2023, we’re consolidating after the incredible comeback we had from the ‘Covid years’. We’re turning our sales results and phenomenal team development into expansion, new offices and new cities.”

It appears we’ve started as we mean to proceed; crushing it!

Aligning in Stratford Asma Brahimi & Muhammed Ahmed

The last time we spoke with Asma she was an Assistant Owner on the brink of opening her office. Fast-forward six months and she’s doing just that. Joining forces with Muhammad Ahmed, who goes by Ahmed, in Stratford, this yin & yang partnership knows where their strengths lie and are doubling down to get results.

Legion Marketing Group have hit the ground running with some impressive sales performances. Their plan to build a ‘powerhouse’ location fronting multiple businesses looks to be very much achievable!

There aren’t many offices within our organisation with a partnership structure; it’s a format we’re always interested to observe. We sat down with both Asma and Ahmed to see how it’s playing out so far.

They were both quick to recognise their different business personalities, but happy in the knowledge that they’re balancing each other out well. Asma, according to Ahmed, is:

“All the brain; she’s great at attention to detail, organisation, business development and recruitment.”

When describing his own contribution, however, he plays it down to the role of “Hype Man”.

“I just go in, make a lot of noise, high-five everyone and we end up doing personal bests! No, I’m joking, I

hope to believe I’m a people-person, but a wise man did tell me once that I bring the ‘good vibes.”

They’re well aware of their respective challenges when it comes to entrepreneurship, which helps no end when building a company together. Asma explains:

“I can get overwhelmed quite quickly, that’s why I’m so organised, I need to be. But then I’m able to lean on Ahmed, he’ll calm me down and put some perspective on the situation. He’ll agree with me that he’s not so great at time management, which is where I come in. We balance each other out.”

When it comes to office management and tasks, they allow themselves to shine where they’re strongest. Recruitment activity, sales training, client liaison and mentorship are all divided up according to the week ahead. Which enables the team to consistently have direct support from at least one Managing Director. A smart move from this pair of relatively new business owners.

It’s no surprise to us that Asma and Ahmed, with the Legion Marketing Group team, are setting fantastic standards throughout the organisation. They were great sales ambassadors themselves and brilliant team leaders. It’s great to now see them passing on their skills and insight to those who want to achieve similar entrepreneurial success. We’d love to see the friendly rivalry between their independent sales teams too! Can you imagine their morning meetings!?

Great start, guys. Imagine what you could achieve in another six months!

Whats Possible?

SIX MONTHS AT MONUMENT PROMOTIONS

A year can fly by, whether you’re having fun or otherwise. A year can run away with you too; 2023 is already halfway ticked off! Wasted time is never the goal, so how much progress have you made this past year? Professionally, personally, spiritually or otherwise, progression is a wonderful thing.

With direct sales being the fast-paced industry it is, we wanted to delve into what’s possible within such a high-energy field. Monument Promotions have always stood out for their standards; the quality of each sale, the team relationships formed and the coaching on offer, so we thought it sensible to start there with our investigation.

Never one to miss an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of his team, Matt Nicholson, Managing Director of Monument Promotions in Swindon, invited us to speak with three of his team members; Toby Phillips, Amelia Barclay and Emilio Fusco. With varying vocational backgrounds and experience in the direct sales field, it’s an interesting insight into what’s possible.

A promoting leader having only been here since February 2023, Toby

credits his shift in accomplishment to the encouragement of goals within the industry. He says,

“My mentality has changed dramatically. This time last year, I was at college doing A-levels, not really knowing what I wanted to do afterwards. I didn’t have the motivation to give it my all or achieve much, so I didn’t put in 100%... But now, I’m so much more motivated, focused and actually really excited to achieve in life”.

The coaching and leadership element of his role has taken him by surprise, never before believing he’d have that opportunity within his work.

“If you told me a year ago that I’d be running my own team, I wouldn’t believe you, that I’d be aiming that much higher.”

Having never worked on a commission structure before, Toby’s thoroughly enjoying the freedom it allows.

“It’s not a fixed wage so I don’t have to wait for it. If I want to cash up, I go for it, it’s as simple as that. I love that it’s in my hands.”

CATEGORY MEETINGS AND EVENTS 010

He’s quite proud of his accomplishments so far, becoming a Promoting Leader and building a team. It’s clear to see that those around Toby are proud too - A fantastic start to his career within the organisation.

Joining the business in November 2022, Amelia is the first to admit direct sales was very different to anything she’d done before, and her confidence wasn’t at an all-time high. Her reason for a career change was simple, she was looking to progress.

“In my previous role, I was so bored of the same thing every day. So, when I saw the progression opportunities at Monument, I was like “Wow. I want that.” I want to develop myself professionally as much as possible and I feel like I’m doing just that.”

A running theme for Amelia is confidence, whereby she’s building her tenacity in multiple areas of her personal and professional life. She’s becoming comfortable speaking in front of others, happily including herself in conversations with people she’s unfamiliar with and is keen to network within the industry at events and meetings.

Confidence is something you work towards; proving to yourself your value within a space.

Amelia is showing time and time again that she is an incredible asset to her own business, as well as those around her; these moments of clarity are what boost your inner confidence. She elaborates on the point.

“I no longer wait for people to come to me, I now have that initiative to get up and do well.”

Self-assurance seeps into all areas of your life. If you’re lacking in it you can find yourself withdrawing, missing out on opportunities and/or presenting yourself in a misleading manner. If your self-esteem is high, however, you step up, make an impression and push for more. It’s a wonderful journey to be on and we’re thoroughly enjoying seeing Amelia light up her own entrepreneurial world.

The most consistent sales performer within Monument Promotions, Emilio Fusco is a Team Leader with an intention of hitting Assistant Ownership any minute now.

As one of the more experienced brand ambassadors, he’s pleased with how his team has been building this year, hitting personal bests for sales and developing depth in the group. Emilio recently picked up awards for excellence in both Leadership and Sales and makes an interesting point with regards to career advancement. He says:

“When you’re first learning to build a team, it’s one person at a time, then it becomes three, four, five people, where you’re learning to support multiple personalities. It’s quite a shift, you’re forever thinking on your feet and working creatively.”

Emilio is a fantastic example of resilience and determination; he joined our organisation just before the Coronavirus pandemic, with only three weeks in the sales field. He managed to promote himself to leadership but then the world came to a halt. Working part-time in a supermarket covering night shifts, he continued to pursue his training online with the team whenever he could, ensuring he was as prepared as possible when the time came.

Emilio has faced some challenges throughout

CATEGORY GROWTH 011

his career to which he’s reacted admirably. He explains:

“When I was first starting to coach, I lost my whole team and had to rebuild from ground zero. The good thing about that though was that I learned from those experiences. I reviewed the situation, I switched things up, I adapted. I had to look inwardly and now my team’s the biggest it’s ever been. I believe you’ll always achieve what you want as long as you stick at it.”

Continuing with his honest account of working within the Monument Promotions team, Emilio believes he’s developed personally in two critical areas; receiving criticism and building relationships. Perhaps those two come hand in hand?

“Coming from quite a male-dominated background of cheffing, I’m now so much better at working with different personalities than I ever was before. And I’m more open to criticism. When I first started, I was quite defensive really, a bit reluctant to listen. But now I take on board what people are saying and it’s definitely helped my growth.”

There’s nothing more heartwarming than a journey that took some grit and internal reflection, and we’re so pleased Emilio is seeing his hard work pay off. Do let us know when you hit the next step in your career!

Matt Nicholson spoke highly of all three individuals, commenting on how they’ve made a concerted effort to become part of the team, going the extra mile to get to know people and learn from those around them. They’ve all faced challenges, ups and downs, but have been able to deal with them wonderfully, and most importantly, grow stronger.

If you’re visiting the Swindon office, it’d be wise to make a beeline for Toby, Amelia and Emilio, it sounds to us like they’ve got a lot to offer.

Learning

Brett Smith & Ryan Beebee / how to learn

From the moment we’re born we’re faced with skills we’re not yet masters of; sleeping, talking, walking, it’s no wonder little ones need naps. These major milestones are discussed at length, focused on intently and celebrated by all, and rightly so.

Skill development tends to teeter off at a certain point during adulthood; we’re no longer in educational systems and gaining qualifications is perhaps deemed something of the past, with accumulating finances now the main focus.

But what if we were to consider evolving skill sets with the same intensity as we did in our former years? Imagine the personal growth. Education should never be ‘behind us’; it’s not a “been there done that” notion.

Two individuals reaping the benefits from a shift in focus are Brett Smith and Ryan Beebee from The Promotions Company in Bristol city centre. We spoke with them individually to find out more about their journeys so far.

Current role: Team Leader

Previous job: Ice Cream Confectioner

Had you thought about working in the sales industry before you went to meet The Promotions Company?

No, never. I saw the advert on Indeed and thought, “That sounds like something totally different, why not give it a go and see what happens? I felt stagnated in my previous role, it was extremely unfulfilling, so it was definitely time for a change.

What excited you about joining the team?

The people I was working with at the time were just living for the weekend; they made their money and went home. There was no sense of wanting to be there. When I met Phil, I could see he really cared about what he was doing and took it seriously. There was a genuine passion for the company and what they were achieving for their clients. I wanted to feel like that about my work too.

When I was growing up I was bullied a lot, so, if I’m honest, I’ve always seen confident people as threats. I was on edge around people if I didn’t know them. Even on my very first day with The Promotions Company my adrenaline was pumping; these people seemed to have their lives together and I felt like an imposter quite frankly. But I didn’t want to be. To come into a place where the team is actually doing something with their lives and for good causes, I wanted to have more meaning to mine and be a part of that.

What skills did you learn right away?

When I joined I was only with the team for a little while before I went travelling, but I managed to learn so much even in that

limited amount of time. I’ve always had low self-confidence, I think that’s why I previously chose a role where I was behind the scenes, but that mentality was never going to get me anywhere. So I worked hard, paid attention and took it upon myself to learn from everyone around me. I practised, practised and practised, and it’s because of that I became somebody that I feel deserves to be in the position I’m in now. Thinking about it, what I learned more than anything was to give myself a chance. The confidence, body language, pitch and customer service skills came as byproducts.

Have you surprised yourself where your development is concerned?

Yes and no. Although I wasn’t confident, I knew I was capable. I’m not more capable than anyone else, but I have been consistent with how I wanted to learn, and I continually try to improve.

What skill set are you currently focusing on?

Managing others. Training is different to leading, and leading is different again from managing. I think I’m quite a good coach where skill development is concerned, now what I’d like to improve on is motivating and inspiring others to achieve their potential. The industry has offered so much to me in the way of personal and professional development, I’d like to now pass that on effectively to the people on my team. Or anyone for that matter!

Technically, I know I also need to work on my time management and organisation skills. What time is it, anyway?!

How are you going about it?

I’ve started to shadow Phil in more areas of the business to get a wider understanding of all departments. I’m watching appointments and sales coaching, but also paying attention to how he runs his meetings as opposed to simply being an attendee of them. I’m networking with Barry Watson from Odessa Promotions in Glasgow and Mike Warren from Apex Marketing in Brighton too - They hold the attention of others really well and have a great process for supporting promotions within their teams.

Current role: Team Leader

Previous job: Finance Assistant

Had you thought about a career in sales before?

It hadn’t crossed my mind until somebody I played skittles with said that I’d do well in a job like hisHe was a sales representative for a sofa company I believe. Then I saw the advert for The Promotions Company and thought “What’ve I got to lose?!”

I feel like I’ve always worked harder than other employees in my previous roles, but I’d get paid the same, it was frustrating. When I went to meet Phil, he laid the business out for me and I could see how I could progress on my own merits, not someone else’s timeline.

What skills did you learn right away?

I joined the business in January 2023 and instantly got thrown into the deep end. I’m naturally a ‘numbers guy’ having worked in finance, so to come into a role that was all about people was a little odd for me at first, but it turns out it suits me - I’m a rambler that’s for sure!

I’m getting better and better at speaking in a public setting, and now Phil is handing me more responsibility in the form of planning sales sectors, running sales impacts and meetings, and even getting involved with the recruitment side of things too.

Are there any opportunities you think have helped your development in particular?

Yes, I managed to get in a lot of networking from the get-go. I went to Northern Ireland to see Ciaran and Seamus who are both doing brilliantly and drew a lot of confidence from that. I also got the chance to go and see some of the Scottish offices.

This is a copy-and-paste industry which just isn’t commonplace in other fields; you wouldn’t go to Microsoft and say, “Hey mate, can I take a look at

your search engines?” It just doesn’t happen! In this business, it makes more sense to help.

What skill set are you focusing on currently?

Creating a strong foundation for my team so making sure everyone is tip-top with their habits, standards, sales skills, etc. I want to ensure everyone is delivering the best version of themselves, myself included.

When you’re new, you can feel somewhat stressed to be training others and showing them sales, but you’ve got to stay calm and focus on the basics. Do those to the best of your ability and it will all be okay. Focus on what you can control; your work ethic, presentation, mindset and effort levels.

Things are looking great for Ryan in quarter three of 2023; his recent promotion to Team Leader really proves the impact he’s having on the business. Team Leadership is only awarded to those that practice what they preach, ‘show up’ for others, and focus on personal development over shortcuts. Well done, Ryan, an incredible first six months in the company. So, what do we think Ryan Beebee will ‘Do Do’ next?...

If you’re looking to level up, Brett and Ryan have offered some tips to do so. Thanks guys!

Talent Acquisition

It's a Way Of Life / Sophie Lee

B

ristol is known for its love of the arts, but also the city that’s in love with recruitment. The competition is fierce with wellknown brands, but also creative start-ups plugging for the same talent.

Talent acquisition has amped up in 2023, with the incorporation of TikTok and highend advertising, but also taking it back to more traditional tools and resources. Sophie Lee, Recruitment Manager for RedSeven Marketing, has taken her new role and run with it. She’s been a part of the team for a year now and has officially made her stamp on the office.

We managed to tear her away from her candidates to catch a glimpse of her mindset.

Sophie! If you were to describe your role, how would you do so?

Predominantly, I’m the recruiter, but there are way more aspects to it. Anything that can help the business, that’s my role.

So, what do you enjoy most about your day?

I absolutely love being around people, that’s why I ended up in the job. I didn’t actually apply for the recruiter role, I applied to be in the sales field, but I think they saw something in me that would do well with candidates instead. Recruitment is a form of sales after all!

I love the morning meetings when everyone is in one space hyping each other up, it’s such

a buzz. Can I tell you a secret too? I always watch new people when they’re in their first morning meeting, they’re gobsmacked! They’re like “What is this?!” but in the best way possible.

There are of course targets in your roleHow are you approaching those?

Nina, my mentor within the office, is really data-driven so by extension so am I. I’m always tracking the numbers and have my finger on the pulse as to where I’m at in the pipeline. That way we can easily identify any areas that need working on.

How do you keep yourself on track?

I take breaks. Initially, I didn’t and I fell into the trap of work, work, work, thinking that was the way to hit goals. But now, I time block with Nina; we work for 50 minutes then, whether we feel we need to or not, we get up and walk away. We make a drink, get some fresh air, attack a different to-do list, or just do anything other than the task at hand. Prevention is better than cure. One of the worst things you can do as a recruiter is go into autopilot because every candidate is unique and every conversation should reflect that, so by getting up and grabbing some vitamin D you’ll stay in the right headspace.

I’m a massive fan of nipping things in the bud, so if I feel I’m ever not on track, I check my pipeline and immediately touch base with Nina and Rob. Speaking to someone more experienced than yourself is always beneficial, they may seem like they have everything together, but you can pretty much guarantee that whatever is going on with you, they’ve been there themselves at some point.

Also, for me, whenever something goes wrong, I always think about the biggest names in the business. There’s always a “come-up” story that is inspiring and simply part of their journey. Each challenge is simply a nugget of wisdom to be able to pass on in the future.

Have you found you’ve changed your habits at all?

I was a nightmare when I started, I wasn’t particularly organised and tended to work reactively rather than proactively. I couldn’t preempt issues, but now with some experience behind me, I’m able to foresee challenges.

I’m a lot more comfortable in my own skin now too. Previously, I worked in salons where I always felt a bit ‘too much’ for people. This is the first industry I’ve worked in where I can be myself; I’m loud, everyone’s best mate and it’s most welcome. I feel more authentically me and I think that’s why I’m doing quite well.

What motivates you to stay consistent?

It sounds so annoying, but I hate the idea of being average. Mediocracy just isn’t what I’m aiming for. The bulletins go out every week and the thought of everyone thinking “Oh, that’s just Sophie” keeps me motivated. I want them to think I’m great at what I do!

I love knowing I’ve done a good job, Rob calls me a praise junkie, and Nina says my love language is words of affirmation.

You have the power to have an impact on the business - What are you hoping to achieve?

You of course have to make a financial difference, but a lot of impact comes from the stuff nobody sees, the conversations you’re having and your presence. Recruitment is more than numbers, it’s being somebody that people trust and feel comfortable talking to.

The behind-the-scenes activity might not appear to produce revenue necessarily, but in the long run, a 15-minute conversation could make all the difference to someone.

Sophie Lee; a fabulous addition to our team; honest, a bundle of energy and eager to learn. We’re looking forward to seeing her creative stamp on recruitment in Bristol!

SALES in the SOUTH WEST

w/ Mark Widnell

e’re used to opening offices in big cities, from London to Barcelona, but we also enjoy branching out into the UK’s smaller cities and towns; the demographic may be different, the pace of life may be different, and we’re all for it.

Having worked in London for 20 years, Mark Widnell, Managing Director of Enigma Promotions, immediately took his business south-westerly when he joined our company. He’s not afraid to take risks, nor does he shy away from evolving business systems and traditions to suit his brand.

He’s taken his business to Barnstaple and Plymouth, and is now placing foundations in Exeter.

“It’s quite small compared to other cities, but that suits me. Exeter’s got plenty going on, there’s a mixed demographic and architecturally it’s beautiful. That suits me down to a tee.”

A twist on the traditional

Working in event marketing, the Enigma Promotions team have recently changed their daily schedule. They no longer head straight to the office for meetings, catch-ups and coaching. Mark explains:

W“Events work better if you get out early. What I’ve found over the years is that when you work in bigger stores, such as Tescos, the demographic will change throughout the day. If you get there early, you’re more likely to speak to older people, and then those on the team that are great with younger people take over later on in the day to cover the school run and after-work shoppers.”

Where sales coaching is concerned, Mark is conscious to teach people how they want to be taught. He believes that most people want to get out there and earn money, so he’s turned the structure of the day on its head. They head straight into the sales field, then do their sales coaching afterwards, allowing them to focus their teachings on the day they’ve just had.

“They appear much more relaxed in training because they’re not itching to get out and make money”

And it seems to be working well with their sales averages standing out amongst the organisation!

Making waves

Having now established their presence in the county, Mark explains the importance of relationship building with brands, individual stores and their staff members. Speaking of his past year highlights, he relays the value of having good relationships with store managers.

“When I’m out and about, I take the time to go into stores and speak to the people that work there. I take certificates that we make in the office, stating how much money we’ve raised elsewhere. They really help as a visual tool, especially when you’re in a store of the same brand.”

Being able to show a decision-maker what you and the team can and have done, for not only their brand but the charity partner, creates internal competition: “This is what we did in another one of your stores, we'd love to do the same for you”.

Mark clearly loves the thrill of lead generation as he’ll be out shopping with his wife and will disappear to go and speak with a store manager! A true entrepreneur.

The Enigma Promotions team have recently landed a whole stream of Marks & Spencer stores, as well as John Lewis and Tescos. The boost in momentum may well have come from their after-event process whereby they go back once the sales have been finalised, with a personalised certificate, flowers and chocolates to say, “thank you very much”. This level of forethought, care & consideration is exactly what sets us apart from other direct sales companies.

There are some big numbers coming from the Enigma Promotions team, and with the ability to utilise both the Devon and Cornwall counties for regular road trips, we’re looking forward to seeing how they’ll continue to grow in 2023. Well done for breaking the mould, Mark, you’re building your business authentically to suit your brand. We love to see it.

The heart wants what it wants, and for Vik Verma, Managing Director of Empire Marketing Group, event marketing is top of the list. Having spent some time working in Exeter, he’s now back in Bristol taking the opportunity to start the new division.

V

ik has worked in other divisions with various client campaigns for the previous five years, but has always wanted to branch out into the Event Marketing space, and now’s the time! He immediately put plans into action, travelling back and forth from Exeter to Bristol to get the team up to speed and recruit the additional team members they needed.

Vik came to university in Bristol and chose to stay upon graduation, he describes the city as,

“A mini London. It’s not as busy, but it’s definitely not quiet! There’s always something going on here, you can be at a festival in the daytime, then an opening party in the evening. It’s a very vibrant and colourful city.”

With a relocation under his belt, we took the chance to ask Vik what his advice would be for anyone looking to do the same within their business.

“Remember you’re here for a reason; you are currently in your position because you can sell, train and recruit great people. A lot of people believe in you and know that you will be successful because you’ve proved yourself before.”

If you’ve met Vik, you’ll know the energy to expect from him. He’s kind-hearted, genuine and prioritises personal development over financial gain. He spoke on the authenticity of being a business owner, focusing on the intent behind goals and mindset.

“It’s important to be in this business for the right reason, not because you just want to earn loads of money. Everyone wants that to some degree, but

the one thing that makes you successful is building the people around you. Have a better purpose than profit. Our business is very people-oriented and that shouldn’t change once you open an office.”

Motivation is different for everyone, and so it should be. If you’re unsure what your “why” is, take the time to figure it out. Goals, as a term, is quite often overused and undervalued. The word “goal” itself implies an element of doubt; will they hit it, or won’t they? Knowing your “why”, however, is a statement. A clear reason to do what you do, strive for more and set out to succeed.

We hear a lot of generic goals within the sales industry, many monetary and materialistic. Vik touches on an incredibly important factor for understanding what’s important to you. Honesty.

“There does need to be an element of personal gain and that’s not selfish. Originally I just wanted to help my parents, that was it, that was the end goal. But that only got me so far, I needed personal goals too.”

He continues with his now embellished vision board, “My non-business goal is to open a homeless cafe in Bristol. I’ve noticed a lot of people living rough, so I want to create an initiative whereby I house a homeless person in a flat above a cafe, teach them how to make coffee so they’ll become barista trained, then find them a stable job. Once they’re settled, we’ll start again with another individual. A stepping stone back into society, maybe that’s what I’ll call it, “Stepping Stones”.

It’s clear to us that Bristol is home to Vik. He cares for the city and the people in it. Imagine what he’ll do for his team! Good luck with everything Vik, and well done.

DYNAMIC

Duos

If you know of Kevin Nash, you’ll know how adored he is within the organisation. 12 years in the business, assisting multiple owners, helping countless brand ambassadors and supporting many an Administrator. He’s worked in the sales field and recruitment team with an overarching business development angle. If you need advice or a helping hand, Kevin’s your guy.

Having worked in and around the Bristol offices since joining the company, he knows the business like the back of his hand, and it seems he now has a right-hand lady who’s ready to take on the world with him. Alice Babington, a Gen Z superwoman, juggling both her university degree and her role at The Promotions Company. Now graduated and embarking on a full-time position with the team, the pair are eager to show what they can really do.

We sat down with the dynamic duo to grab some insight into how they’re making it look so easy. You’ll notice they answered on behalf of each other more often than not - A true testament to partnership!

Kevin, Alice, great to see you! Could you talk a little about how your roles differ in the office?

Kevin: Sure! Alice comes from a marketing background and originally the idea was that I needed extra support for my role, as a right-hand woman, so she became our social media ‘charger’, essentially. But it soon became clear that marketing is not her only talent, she’s a real people person, so there was no way her skills could stay confined to behind the scenes. It made sense to get her involved with recruitment and her role has

really blossomed.

Alice: Yes, so now I’m full time I’m able to hold the fort here in Bristol, in both the recruitment and marketing areas, which frees up Kev to go out to the other offices and have an impact there too.

There seems to be a lot of synchronicity needed with those roles - How do you manage that?

Kevin: We take a lot from how Phil runs the Pro Co organisation; everything is a system. We have step-by-step systems for everything, if you follow them you can’t really go wrong.

Alice: We work very similarly too, we’re both very organised and methodical people. Everything’s written down, prioritised and time-blocked, then we work our way through it. Of course, with our business things can change out of nowhere, so it’s a matter of being on top of our priorities and tasks.

Kevin: Recruitment is always the priority, so if we’re planned and organised together, to the best of our ability, it should never be an issue.

Would you say your personalities balance each other out?

Kevin: I think with me, letting go of full control can be tricky because I’ve always done it all myself. But because I trust Alice to do a great job, and we’re working together, it’s not an issue. How Alice juggled everything is amazing; she was studying at university, working here part-time, then heading back to the library of an evening - It was ridiculous! I think one of her biggest strengths is simply her personality, she lights up the office, and she won’t agree with me on this, but she is just amazing with people. Listening to her host is fantastic, I’ve got no worry at all about leaving her in charge in Bristol when I’m travelling around.

When you know, you know. It’s as true in romantic couples as it is in work relationships!
CATEGORY INTEGRATION

Alice: Kev’s strength is definitely his organisation, he's a machine. He just knows what’s going on all of the time, in every department of the business!

Every role comes with its challenges, what would you say yours were and how are you overcoming those?

Kevin: I think for me, if I get overwhelmed sometimes, I have to go back to basics and just do one thing at a time. The more you do it, and I’ve been doing this for so long now, you begin to not worry about the things you can’t control. We’re not brain surgeons, no one’s going to die. You learn to know your priorities and where you can have an impact even if things aren’t quite going your way that day.

Alice: Mine would be confidence, imposter syndrome I guess. As a recruiter, it’s on you to help build the team and that can feel like quite a bit of pressure. But with time and experience, you’re proving to yourself that you can do it. Each day is different, but that’s good as you’re learning with the variety; the objections, the challenges, the different scenarios, the technical issues etc.

What do you believe a healthy working environment looks like?

Kevin: When Phil’s on holiday! No, I’m joking. A sense of humour is key though.

Alice: Oh God yeah, you’ve got to laugh. And then there’s just being planned and organised as an individual but also as a team - It alleviates you from unnecessary stress.

Are there any ‘red flags’ you look out for with a team member?

Kevin: Our business is a people business, you have to like people and enjoy working with them. Otherwise, it’s not for you.

Alice: Yeah, I really appreciate it when someone genuinely cares about others. It’s not just small talk for small talk’s sake. If they don’t immerse themselves in the team they’re not really a team player.

Does anyone else want to be a part of this squad? We know it’s not just us! What a pleasure it was to speak with the pair. A working relationship we can all hope for. Phil, the Managing Director of The Promotions Company, thoroughly appreciates the team

he has, saying:

“These guys are the best duo since Batman and Robin”.

We couldn’t agree more! A dream team, that’s for sure

“Our business is a people business, you have to like people and enjoy working with them. Otherwise, it’s not for you.”

Education and attitude; our formula for success. Throughout every single one of our offices, businesses and sales teams, that’s all we’ve ever, and will continue to, ask for.

If you focus on keeping a positive mindset toward your own learning and skill development, the only possible way is up. “Up” means a larger toolkit to draw upon, increased confidence in yourself and your capabilities, more experience to utilise and, without doubt, a more fruitful income.

Whether you work in hospitality, finance, engineering, direct sales or otherwise, that formula will see you succeed. You’ll attain promotions, gain responsibility and trust from employers, and acquire respect from coworkers. That’s a good place to be in your career.

When we’re recruiting as an organisation, we never ask for experience in direct sales as part of our candidate criteria. What we do ask for though is a student mentality, a keenness to work with people and an awesome energy. As a result, our team members have diverse vocational backgrounds and individual journeys; what an incredible environment that creates. Not only are we compassionate and listen to one another, but we’re inclusive as a group, leaving judgement and presumptions at the door.

The truth is, you can never know how capable someone is until you give them the time and space to discover it themselves. As is said with food, wedding dresses, and hobbies, you don’t know until you try!

Get to it

If skills are currency, are there particular ones that are of most value? We believe so. We won’t speak for other companies, but from our perspective, there are skills we appreciate over others. Let us explain…

Learning to actively listen

All too often people listen to what is being said but aren’t hearing the message. You can listen to instructions, but not hear the overall project goal. You can listen to a problem, but

not hear the underlying worry.

In business, if you’re not actively listening, you’re not able to serve your customers effectively. Likewise, in a team scenario, if you’re not taking on board the concerns, aspirations or group dynamics around you, it can be difficult to get to where you all want to be.

So prick those ears up, look that person in the eye and take on what it is they’re actually trying to tell you.

Learning to finish what you started

We get it, you’re busy, we all are. Learning to know your limits and understand what is possible within a time scale is a technique that takes time to master. You more often than not need to have had some experience within a role first to be able to predict the relative outcome. What you can always do, however, is be honest, try your hardest and set priorities.

Don’t tell someone you’ll call if you know full well you’re already busy that evening. Don’t promise the earth if you can only deliver one continent. People respect honesty and work well with clarity. Meaning well but providing fickle and unreliable outcomes, doesn’t sit well, nor does it help you in the long run.

Aim for this: be clear with what’s achievable, manage the expectations of others, and if you say you will do something, make sure you do it.

'“When we’re recruiting as an organisation, we never ask for experience in direct sales as part of our candidate criteria. What we do ask for though is a student mentality, a keenness to work with people and an awesome energy ”

Learning to manage your time

There aren’t many that would disagree on this one, but we sure do love punctuality! If you’re on time, you’re already five minutes late by the time you’ve grabbed a coffee and gotten yourself together for the appointment/meeting/one-on-one, etc. Time is money as they say, but time is also invaluable for building relationships and gaining insight. We wouldn’t want to waste either of those, would we?

We are so fortunate in 2023 that there is an abundance of productivity tools out there for us to use on-the-go. From setting reminders and creating calendar invites, to being able to make calls, write notes and send messages as we drive, we’re a lucky bunch of entrepreneurs nowadays! Utilise what you can.

Our biggest tip? Organise yourself the day before. Pack your lunch, choose what you’re wearing, remind others of the plan, and structure your day so you can wake with purpose, not panic.

Focusing on your skill set will enable you to see progress at each step, but quite often we’re unaware of how far we’ve actually come until we take a moment to look back. So, take a glance in the rearview mirror every once in a while and give yourself a pat on the back. Make sure to do the same for those around you too.

20 YEARS At Mantra

FRAN DAVIES

Fran Davies, to know her is to adore her. She’s incredible at what she does, and phenomenal with how she does it. From a business perspective, she’s planned, organised, forward-thinking and never misses a beat. From a co-worker's perspective, she’s patient, encouraging and helpful beyond belief. From a mentoring perspective, she’s kind, considerate, compassionate and understanding.

Never one to blow her own trumpet, we took the chance to do it for her! 20 years in the company is an incredible achievement, and the organisation, each business owner, and hundreds, if not thousands, of team members have been lucky enough to work with Fran. We’ve all gained mantras to live by, nuggets of wisdom to hold dear, considerable support and assistance within our careers, and memories to last a lifetime.

We were able to grab a few moments with Fran to ask her how she feels about such a milestone.

Fran, congratulations on your recent milestone - How did you come to join the industry?

I’d graduated from university, did a little stint interrailing around Europe then randomly became a dental nurse, but hated it. I was spending the entire day looking inside people’s mouths. It was really boring and just not for me, so I immediately started looking for another job and saw this one in the newspaper.

What were your first few months like? Fun!

I was thrown into the deep end and really loved the pace of it all, and the fact that I could impact a small business really quickly was great. We expanded into different UK cities and then into Dubai soon after which was really cool.

What are the major challenges you’ve faced over the years?

For me personally, the challenges came when I became a parent. As much as I love my children, the juggle is real! You want to be your best wherever you are, but you have to realise you’re only one person and that’s difficult to accept. Luckily, over the years, I’ve built a strong team so have been able to teach a lot of people what I know, which helps to free me up a bit to focus my energy where I can make the most difference.

I’m the person in the business that connects lots of people, so everybody generally comes to me if they need something, and that can be quite tricky sometimes. Half of it is just my nature of wanting to help; I know there are lots of things I can do and I want to support people where it’s possible to. I’ve gotten better at setting boundaries over the years, but it’s not a case of saying “no”, I’m generally just saying, “Not right now”.

Are there any patterns you’ve noticed with new business owners?

Ooooh, that’s a good question. Yes actually. It’s very easy to suddenly think you’ve got lots of new balls to juggle when you first become a business owner, but remembering what got you there in the first place is important. Building relationships, setting standards in the sales field, coaching and training people really well.

CATEGORY BRANDING 038
"Don’t worry about the things you can’t control. There are so many variables in our business, we deal with people all day every day! Just focus on the very basics"

The more prepared you are beforehand, the easier the transition will be. So, training staff properly, and having all the systems set up and ready to go allows you to do what you do best.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. We’re an ambitious company, absolutely, and we set massive goals, but the reality is we’re playing the long game. As long as we’re moving forward, it’s important to enjoy the whole journey. There isn’t an end destination, ever, in life or business, so you have to learn to enjoy the process. That’s where I am now, really enjoying the day-to-day.

What have been your career highlights?

Genuinely, it’s been being able to help people achieve what they want to achieve. Seeing them improve each day and watching their confidence grow, then they really take hold of their business and thrive. Looking at Rob, Matt and Phil, for example, they’ve done the hard work but I’ve been there to support them.

Having the opportunities to travel have been great - Thailand stands out and Sri Lanka was amazing. I really enjoyed my time working in the Spanish offices too; being able to see the business expand into different cultures, and passing on information and skills is such

a pleasure. A lot of ideas start in your head and then you have moments of realisation that it’s actually happening!

**Disclaimer, Fran has won lots of awards in the industry but, of course, she didn’t mention those! #toomodest

You’ve worked in recruitment, business development, event management, administration and many more aspects of the company and direct sales - Would you mind giving us some gold dust tips for succeeding in business?

Presenting yourself

Look, it’s so much more than the way you look. I try to be somebody that sticks to my word; that’s my brand, my reputation and that’s what’s going to get the best result for myself and others.

I’m a real believer in having integrity in everything you do. Nobody needs to be watching me and I don’t need a manager checking in. I want to go to bed at night thinking “Do you know what Fran, you couldn’t have done much more”. I give it a good go every day, and I learned that from my Dutch Oma, she always looked at what she could do rather than what she couldn’t. There’s always a solution.

Keeping everything under control

Number #1: Don’t worry about the things you can’t control. There are so many variables in our business, we deal with people all day every day! Just focus on the very basics, so managing your effort levels, your approach, and your standards; that’s your Hallmark.

Number #2: You’ve got to be organised. Really simply, write everything down, then list your priorities. You have to get ahead of everyone in terms of what needs to happen.

Working with others

To get the very best out of someone, you have to take the time to get to know them, understand what their goals are, and what they actually want from life. Showing that you care, helping them to develop and stay on track but also keeping it fun and celebrating their successes will empower

them to be strong in their position. It’s always my personal goal to get them to believe they can do what they don’t think they can.

I also get involved with everything, I’ll roll my sleeves up as much now as I did 20 years ago, whether it’s sorting the bins, taking calls, doing appointments, or washing the dishes. You’re never too good to get stuck in.

Making a reputation for yourself

I’m always conscientiously attempting to improve the environment I’m in. When I go to an office, I want to influence someone to think they can do better and be better. From the moment I push the buzzer, I’m bringing that energy. Sometimes I only have a small amount of time somewhere, so I want to ensure I’m making a difference.

Fran, you've worked with an abundance of team members from all departments within the business - What do you appreciate in a coworker?

Honestly, someone who works hard, someone I can have fun with and someone who is enthusiastic and solution-oriented. We all have challenges in what we do, sometimes all you can do is laugh through the chaos!

I’ve done interviews on my laptop, next to the Hoover with bleach bottles around me at the top of a staircase before. Kev would be laughing and all I’ve got to say is, “There’s nowhere else to go, Kev!”. So many situations need humility, we all just get stuck in.

20 years is a long time, why are you still with us?

It’s half of my life! If I consider why I’m still here it’s definitely the people and the impact I feel I can make, but also the freedom to be creative and the variety the business offers. We want to move forward to know we’re making a difference and I definitely feel I’m doing that.

James Buckley, the CEO of our organisation, wanted to say a few words about Fran.

“Fran is the benchmark; she’s honest, diligent, amazing, a f**king superstar. She’s everything. She’s been there since the beginning and helped me build the business. She doesn’t necessarily get the credit for expanding into other countries but she’s the one that’s allowed me to do that by being me here in the UK. She’s so important. She’s Fran.”

Fran, in case you've not been adequately informed, please consider this your official notification that you are incredible. The most awesome there is. Thank you for everything you do and everything you are.

Always a pleasure to add to the calendar, the Owner’s Meeting is a weekend full of vision. The education on offer is invaluable, being given by those who are not only experts in their field but live and breathe direct sales every day.

Held this time at the Edwardian Manchester Hotel in June 2023. The purpose of this meeting is to

provide in-depth insight into sales mentality, coaching techniques, team momentum and much, much more, with actionable tips and knowledge to take away. It’s not enough to listen with a keen ear, for this meeting, you need a pen and paper, and lots of it!

In our organisation, we hear of people who are doing well, and we hear of great examples within the industry every day, so to be able to get the opportunity to meet them in person and watch them in action is priceless. Well-being for WORTH

The art of being, and staying well

060

“Using the power of the senses, and sensory stimulation, to help improve our social, cognitive and emotional well-being”

Well-being; the art of being, and staying, well. It’s on the tip of our tongues in all conversations, and at the back of our minds throughout daily life. Feeling our best is important for our careers, mental health and relationships. What seems to be common sense in a 2023 world, just hasn’t been given the airtime in previous eras. It was all about fitness, now it’s wellness.

According to Hotels.com, a quarter of Brits are now keen on wellness breaks; they’re investing valuable holiday time and money into therapeutic resorts and retreats. The sole purpose of these trips is to feel more healthy, at peace, balanced and/or grounded. From yoga to alfresco fitness, and emotional healing to silent retreats, there’s a vast amount on offer.

Being active and sleeping well will always be focal within the narrative, but what else could we be doing to improve our personal well-being?

Here are some fantastic initiatives that have been brought to public consumption with the objective of wellness, and wellness only.

Wild Swimming and Sauna Dips

It’s taking off around the country, particularly on the coast, at an extreme pace. Converted horse boxes are popping up everywhere and the idea is to jump in the sea, or a body of water, then head for the sauna. Cold water, hot sauna, repeat.

Also known as contrast therapy, the difference in temperature boosts mental well-being, while relaxing the mind, and increasing your heart rate, getting those endorphins pumping. Interestingly, the challenging temperature changes improve your concentration levels, make you more alert and alter your pain perception, which makes you more equipped to cope with the stresses of everyday life.

Can you imagine the sense of accomplishment that’s felt afterwards too? We’re definitely giving it a go.

Sober-curious Lifestyles

Self-explanatory to some degree, would you try it? We love that the pressure of the word

“Teetotal” has been removed, it’s not an allor-nothing mentality, it’s simply exploring a life without alcohol.

In 2023, we’re more in sync with our minds, bodies and souls than ever before and the sober-curious movement is a great example. Having the self-awareness to recognise when alcohol is no longer serving us, affecting our mood, self-esteem, and/or anxiety level, is indicative of the current intuitive generation.

When you begin to think about the benefits, it becomes more and more appealing: health, wealth, core memories, and all of the alternative past times explored. What would you do with all that extra time and money?

Sensehacking

“Using the power of the senses, and sensory stimulation, to help improve our social, cognitive and emotional well-being”

- Professor Charles Spence.

With the intensity of twenty-first-century living, there’s a lot to distract and overwhelm our senses. Sensehacking is the skill of understanding what it is that’s causing the sensory overload, allowing us to remove or limit it, and resume calm. If we’re struggling to concentrate, we may reduce noise factors. If we’re feeling apprehensive with high energy, we may head outside to touch base with nature and calm our cortisol levels.

Tuning in to what’s knocking us off kilter is the first step to hacking your senses. Understanding what you can do to find balance is where we take control of our emotional and social well-being. Used as part of everyday life, in tiny moments but purposeful activities too, sensehacking can bring peace and harmony to an individual.
