Cyprus’ Recycling and Environmental Protection Plans
By 2015 Cyprus will own a comprehensive solid waste management system, which will include full restoration of landfill sites, full recovery of materials and energy production processes, the Minister of Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis announced at a press conference. According to the Minister, in 2012 the Ministry’s strategy on comprehensive management of solid waste will enter its final implementation phase, while construction of infrastructure projects will begin the year after. Among the infrastructure projects are the recycling sites in Nicosia and Limassol, the solid waste transit stations, rehabilitation of landfill sites in the districts of Paphos, Larnaca and Famagusta, creation of green point networks all over the island and aggregate recycling facilities. At the same time the state will proceed with the creation of the combustion plant for energy production and the upgrading of Paphos sanitary landfill to an integrated solid waste management unit.

LN Magazine Goes to the Forces with CESSAC Shops
Yes that's right we have finally been given permission to distribute the magazine at all the bases via the CESSAC shops.
Cyprus Ranked 40th by World Bank Cyprus have ranked 40th worldwide in the World Bank’s annual report entitled “DoingBusinessReport 2012”. The results of the report were presented at an event organised in Nicosia by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA).
Addressing the event, CIPA President Christodoulos Agkastiniotis said that the Agency advises the government on reform issues aiming to improve the investment environment. According to a press release issued by CIPA, Agkastiniotis also assured that the Agency is willing to help stakeholders in promoting reforms within its own sphere of competence. The World Bank's Doing Business Report measures the ease of doing business in 183 countries, ranking them in 10 areas of business regulation, to determine how conducive they are to starting and operating a local firm in each country. The 2012 report ranked Cyprus 40th among 183 countries worldwide compared to 49th last year and 16th among the EU countries compared to 15th last year. Established with a Council of Ministers decision in 2007, the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency is a registered not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and fully funded by the Government of Cyprus. The Board of 15 Directors (12 from the private sector, 2 from the public sector and 1 from the Central Bank of Cyprus) was appointed for the second time in November 2011 for a 4-year term.
It has been a long time since we first started distributing at the Dhekelia CESSAC and our magazine has always been very welcome by the manager of CESSAC Dhekelia, its visitors and forces personnel that look forward to picking up a copy to find out about local news, events and the best places to eat, go out and shop. A Welcome in the Hillside
Welsh people the world over can tell you the feast day of their patron saint without a second thought. March 1st is St David’s Day and this year there is something special to look forward to. On the Sunday before March 1st, February 26th, there will be a special St David’s service, taken by Ven Dr John Holdsworth, chaplain at St Helena’s Larnaca, and archdeacon in the diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. What makes the service special is that it will be bilingual, in English and Welsh. The service will be held in the hilltop village of Pissouri, home to a considerable number of Welsh ex-pats. Non-Welsh speakers will be able to participate fully in the service, which starts at 6pm. Prior to coming to Larnaca, John was archdeacon of St David’s in Pembrokeshire. “I’m really looking forward to hearing hymn singing in the language of heaven again,” he said, “it should be a great occasion.” LN LN Magazine I 9 ♥

The 1st HOREXPO Cyprus HOREXPO Cyprus, the first international exhibition on equipment and catering for hotels, food and entertainment establishments opened on 27th January at the site of the Cyprus International Fair. The exhibition, presented during a press conference by its organisers at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), in Nicosia, is the result of the cooperation between Cyprus State Fairs Authority (CSFA), “Xenia Exhibition Conferences” and “Rota Trade Show Organizing”. The exhibition will be open from January 27 to 29 and, according to the organisers, exhibitors currently number 70 enterprises. Speaking during a press conference, CSFA President Loizos Constantinou talked about the need to give new opportunities to enterprises active in the equipment and catering business amid a period of financial crisis.
“Airlines’ entry into the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS) on January 1 brings the injustice of APD into even sharper relief. APD was initially conceived as a green tax, and the Treasury still maintains it brings ‘environmental benefits’. The reality is that no APD revenue has ever been spent on environmental benefit. In contrast, ETS means that all future growth in European aviation will be carbon-neutral, and provides an incentive for further reductions in emissions. The Government’s own figures show that UK aviation was paying enough to cover its carbon costs in full in 2008, since when APD has more than doubled on many routes. Under ETS, UK airlines face paying €400m a year by 2020. Annual revenue from APD already stands at £2.5bn, and the Government wants it to rise to £3.6bn by 2016. We are already tackling our climate change impacts and ETS, while far from perfect, goes with the grain of improving environmental performance. APD actually makes it more difficult for airlines to invest in carbon-reducing technology. APD is a self-defeating tax that pays for no environmental benefits, chokes off economic activity and cuts jobs. Only the UK holds back its own economic recovery with a tax of this nature. APD must go."
Constantinou said the professional character of the exhibition would be supported by a series of parallel activities, including the “Hospitality Excellence” seminars, the 3rd Tourism Conference on “the sustainability of hotels and tourism developments”, as well as cocktail and other contests.
Cyprus and Israel to Sign Search and Rescue Agreement
On behalf of “Xenia”, Development Manager Nikos Koumanis said the organisers aim at establishing the exhibition within the next three years and make HOREXPO Cyprus a meeting place for entrepreneurs from Cyprus, Greece and the wider South-eastern Mediterranean region, as well as attracting enterprises and visitors from Israel, Lebanon and Egypt.
Cyprus and Israel are expected to sign an agreement on search and rescue, in view of possible accidents or other actions against oil rigs in their exclusive economic zones. The agreement is expected to be signed during a visit to Cyprus by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in February.
CCCI Managing Director Panayiotis Loizides said for his part that the long-standing cooperation between the Chamber and CSFA proves to be for the benefit of enterprises, giving them a chance to display their products and services in a targeted and efficient manner. In parallel with HOREXPO Cyprus, the organisers announced today the opening of the 2nd Cyprus Gift & Souvenir EXPO, focusing on tourist souvenirs, gift items and decoration. The latter will be open for the public.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport on 22nd January, before departing for a trip to Brussels and London, Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis said, ''We are at the final stages of signing the agreement'' and expressed certainty that it could be signed during Netanyahu's visit. Regarding her trip to Brussels, Markoullis said she would be reporting Turkey's threats against Cyprus regarding the issue of hydrocarbons, noting that ''Turkey's threats have been repeatedly reported to the External Affairs Council and the European Council, and we have already obtained very important conclusions, which unreservedly deplore Turkey's behaviour and threats.'' Markoullis also said she would be participating in the External Affairs Council, which will discuss the Middle East question and the situation in Syria and other Arab Spring countries. For all you budding photographers out there the 4th of November 2011 in the Gallery “Palia Ilektriki” saw the Grand Opening of the 6th annual International Salon-Circuit of Art Photography “With love to Women” 2011. The 7th is now open for entrants. The idea received great support among Rotary Clubs, who actively participated this year and will be further involved in the international exhibition “With love to Women” in 2012. Their support has provided an opportunity to introduce Salon in 9 cities of 4 countries. Business Feature Pricing Strategies and the Marketing Mix In the current financial climate businesses need to reassess many aspects of their marketing and advertising methods. Those who have studied business should already know of the Marketing Mix (also known as the 4 P's), but many involved in business may not. This tool is used to help businesses achieve their aims and objectives. If you are just starting up a business you may want to use certain aspects of the marketing mix to help you gain a foothold in the market you are operating in. If you are already firmly established in your market you may want to take a different approach using other methods from the marketing mix to reach a different outcome. The Marketing Mix consists of Product, Placement, Promotion and Pricing. In this issue of LN Magazine we will be discussing Pricing strategies available to all businesses and in what way they can help strengthen your company. Pricing is one of the most important elements of the marketing mix, particularly because it is the only mix that generates a turnover. The others are variable costs for your company and therefore Price must support them. Pricing is extremely difficult to get right, and even if you do use the right strategy or mix of strategies, the pricing you choose will unlikely be applicable further down the line as economies fluctuate just the same as consumer demand. Pricing a product too high or even too low can be the difference between success and failure. First we’ll start off with one of the more common pricing strategies available, Competition Pricing. This involves setting the prices of your products or services in comparison with competitors. And the most realistic options in this strategy are to match your competitors’ prices, price higher than them or price lower than them. Some businesses even offer a price matching service where if you can find the same product at a lower price they will match it. This way they try to confer to the customer that they are giving them the best price on the market.

Product Line Pricing is another strategy you see every day, especially with electrical goods. This involves pricing different products in the same product range at different prices based on the features available with each product. For example my 32 inch HD TV will possibly be cheaper than yours by the same manufacturer. Why? Because mine might have a slightly lower resolution, yours might be Full HD whereas mine is HD Ready, etc., etc. BOGOF sounds familiar right? It’s Buy One Get One Free. You see it all the time at supermarkets and general goods stores all over the island, enticing you to buy a product because you get the second free. This strategy of selling same or similar products together at a lower price is called Bundle Pricing. LN Magazine has recently had many emails regarding this pricing strategy in Cyprus. These have complained that more often than not you will find something supposedly BOGOF, but the price of it is actually almost twice what one of that product normally costs; essentially you don’t actually get the second product free, but rather pay just less than full price for both. Penetration Pricing is another choice, particularly for businesses that are just starting up or bringing a new service/product onto the market. This pricing strategy is all about pricing low to increase sales, gain a large customer base and increase market share. Once this target has been achieved prices are then, usually, slowly increased as time goes on. We’ll finish off this issue’s Business & Finance advice with one more strategy, which is my personal favourite: Psychological Pricing. Have you seen prices such as €19.99 or €1.99 or €4.95? I’ll take a wild guess and say you have. The use of this fractional pricing rather than rounding to the nearest whole number became extremely popular at the beginning of the 20th Century and carries on today. Although while reading this now, you know that €19.99 is 1 cent away from €20 and €4.95 is only 5 cents away from €5, if you see a product at these prices your brain automatically thinks “oooh that’s under €20” or “wow that’s less than €5”. Yes they are but not

exactly by much, and yet that mentality has already given you a positive feeling towards the price of the product. What is sometimes called the ‘left-digit effect’ also comes into play with Psychological Pricing. Sometimes upon seeing a price that has been psychologically priced, we concentrate more on the left hand digits (euros) than the right hand digits (cents). Thus a €6.99 may be read as €6 when in fact it is one cent away from €7. These aren’t even all of the pricing strategies available. Examples of different pricing strategies are all over the island and all over the world, and each company decides its pricing based on its circumstances, the economy, the market it operates in, costs, projected profits, etc., etc. If you have a business, think carefully about what pricing strategy you use. If your business is not doing as well as it normally does maybe it’s time to rethink your strategy and re-evaluate your Marketing Mix. Using the correct Pricing Strategy for your business and your products and/or services is absolutely essential in the business world.

Antonis Loizou Writes: Rent Control Laws
I
n the past most European countries adopted various measures in order to protect tenants from a landlord’s unreasonable demands for rental increases and eviction for repossession. These Rent Control laws have been abolished in most countries, but Cyprus still adopts these rather archaic requirements.
Basically the Cyprus Rent Control laws state that buildings, which were completed before 31.12.1999, fall within Rent Control. The law applies in all Municipalities although most of the rural areas are excluded. So in order for the law to apply, the property must fall within the Rent Controlled areas. In simple terms the law states that a sitting tenant may be evicted from a rent controlled property subject to certain conditions (including non-payment of rent). Rental increases may not increase more than 14% every 2 years (as a maximum), however, for shops this is reduced to 8% every 2 years. In addition, each party (tenant/landlord) may apply to the court if he feels that he is overpaying/ under paying and the measure of judgement is the average rentals payable at the time of application in the immediate area. So there are cases that because the local rents are low (e.g. historic), the tenant can apply to have the rent reduced and vice-versa i.e. if the landlord feels that he is not getting enough, he can ask for an increase in the rent based on the local average rents (but to the maximum of 90% of the average). In case that an eviction order is issued the court may order the payment of compensation to the tenant amounting 18 times the monthly rent payable. However, the monthly rent has been recently decided by a district court as being the current rent rather than the rental paid. This is a very recent decision, which has been appealed to, and we are awaiting the results. Bear in mind that only E.U. members and Cos are protected by this law and as such 3rd country Cos/persons are not. The rent control provisos come into effect once the contract of lease ends and in the meantime each party must abide by the contract. Once the contract period ends the tenant might choose not to vacate the premises, ask for lowering of rent, etc. since he will become a controlled tenant. Deciding the legal route, it is a long distance procedure which might take 1-2 years and legal costs of around €2.000-€3.000. What happens in most cases is that the landlord offers a higher compensation more than the 18 months rent, in order to save time and trouble. So the tenants in such instances (where the property is in rent controlled
areas, the building has been completed before 12/2009, etc.) should bear this in mind when renting, or letting if you are a landlord (the law does not apply for vacant land and hotels).

If you are considering letting a property and you are concerned about the tenant staying more than the period you wish, you may have a contract which says €500 p.m. for the period that the tenant and you agree on (say 2 years), but in your contract you state that the lease is for 4 years. For the first 2 years the rent is €500 p.m. and for the second 2 years the rent is agreed to be increased to €1.000 p.m. (unless the tenant gives notice of termination at the end of the second year). So, if the tenant wishes to stay, he/she will have to pay double the rent (or more depending on the agreement) or vacate the premises at his cost. The situation regarding holiday/short lets property is not clear and so far we have not had any problems on this count, but care is required since it might happen i.e. letting your villa for 2 months and then finding out that you may not be able to get the tenant out. A well known solicitor in Cyprus has told us that the rent control laws create such an animosity between the parties that it equals the ferocity of divorces. It is not unknown that a family buys an apartment for future use by their children and let it out until the apartment is needed, only to find out it is not possible when the time comes. We believe that the Rent Control laws should apply for commercial property (shops, showrooms, etc.) since a long standing tenant may have built up his goodwill when “suddenly” the landlord, in a blackmail approach, asks him for an unreasonable increase. In this case, and provided the tenant has run his business in that shop for more than 5 years, we believe he must be entitled to protection. However, in the case of residential accommodation when there is such an abundance of units to let and when the location is not so directly related to the tenant (except for schools, etc.) the tenants should not be protected in this way. It is also worth noting that property which is let subject to rent control laws and let with somewhat low rentals have a much lower value than their free from rent control laws counterparts. So when buying/renting a property keep the Rent Control provisions in mind and make your own educated decisions. LN Magazine I 23 ♥

U3A Club Larnaca Digital Photography The Digital Photography Group meets every 3rd Monday of the month at 10am for many a lively discussion amid much laughter (we don’t take ourselves too seriously) often caused by member’s efforts at producing images relating to the month’s ‘Project’ or ‘Field Trip’. Past projects have included ‘Summertime’, ‘White Balance’, ‘Playtime’ and ‘People at Work’. The group try to go on a ‘Field Trip’ once a month and have visited, ‘Dhekelia Sailing Club’, ‘Skala’, ‘Kakopetria’, ‘Larnaca Fort’, ‘Flamingoes’ and ‘Hala Sultan Tekke’. Like all good photographers we try and find interesting ‘angles’ for our shots. This can also cause much laughter in our group meetings, should one of the members go OTT. Field Trips are usually rounded off with a coffee or a beer at a local hostelry. All are welcome whether they be ‘Happy Snappers’ or the more seriously minded. The group’s aim is to increase our collective knowledge of digital photography and improve the finished image by means of one or more image editing software programs available for your computer, as well as the sharing of knowledge. One to one educative sessions can be arranged for real beginners. Don’t be put off by talk of megabytes, pixels, 3x4 systems, etc.; just take your photos. And there is also always
time in our group meetings for “what’s troubling you”. The general belief in the group is that the essence of good photography is ‘Concept & Execution’ and so we try to help each other along these lines. Most of the group’s members go back to the days of film photography, darkrooms, black and white images, or running to the chemist with the film, but these days are long gone. Now, with even the simplest digital camera and the use of a PC, you can produce photographs of astounding quality in your own home. Digital cameras come in many guises and all of them can be extremely complicated, but, conversely, they can also be very simple. If the camera is set to ‘Fully Automatic’, 95% of the pictures will be just fine. Alternatively if you want a special effect, a more dramatic sky for example, the camera can be set to do just this. Have Your Say A Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, My business in Cyprus is just about keeping above water thanks to some hard work by the people around me in its first year of operation, but I have been told that when I do my annual accounts I have to pay extra to get them done in English (so I can understand it) and Greek, to be submitted to the relevant department. Whilst I am learning Greek and always try to practice my Greek in day to day life, it seems silly that businesses, especially those such as mine that trade with the outside world and not just in Cyprus, should have to submit accounts in Greek. accept the submission of annual accounts in English. This means that International Business Companies no longer have to make the effort and/or cover additional expenses to have their annual accounts translated into Greek before submitting them to the Registrar of Companies. For a long time CIBA has given serious time and effort to convince the Ministries and Departments that are involved daily with International Business Companies to issue instructions and documents in English and to accept filing of applications and/or any other documents in English. In the extensive memo we handed over to the Minister of Commerce, Industry & Tourism, Mr. Antonis Paschalides, at the end of the breakfast meeting we had with him on 03 March 2011, we included a paragraph about the use (or rather nonuse) of the English language by different government departments, which concluded as follows: “With all respect for the Greek character of Cyprus, the language for International Business is English and it should therefore be used automatically by all government departments in their contacts and correspondence with International Business Companies.” We sincerely thank the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Registrar of Companies and Official Receiver, and repeat our call to other Ministries and Government Departments in daily contact with the International Business Community to follow this example. In this way we can help to improve the image and attractiveness of Cyprus as a centre for foreign investment and international business.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a story of three women who live in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. Aibileen and Minny are black maids working for white families and Skeeter is the daughter of a white middle class family. As the story unfolds Aibileen and Minny describe their lives and the families they work for. Aibileen works for Elizabeth and Raleigh Leefolt and as well as doing the cooking and cleaning, she looks after their two year old daughter Mae Mobley. Aibileen has brought up many white children and lavishes love on Mae Mobley who is largely ignored by her mother. Aibileen works hard and keeps her feelings under control although she is still grieving for her own son who died in an accident. Minny, who struggles to keep her opinions to herself, works for Celia and Johnny Foote who have a large, rambling house, but no children. Celia asks Minny, who is an excellent cook, to teach her how to prepare meals for her husband, but Celia struggles to grasp the basic concepts and seems to spend most of her day lying in her bedroom.

Aibileen, Minny and, eventually, other maids meet in secret with Skeeter to tell their stories and gradually a book is written about their experiences. Tensions build as the race is on to finish the book in time and keep its contents secret. Concerns grow as to the reaction in Jackson if it is published. Skeeter discovers she has her own story to add to the book about Constantine the black maid who brought her up and finds

LN Exclusive Interview With A Crime Writer: Sophie Hannah
S
ophie Hannah is an internationally acclaimed author whose psychological thrillers have sold millions of copies worldwide. She is also an award winning poet and short story writer, and her novels have been televised as the popular crime drama, Case Sensitive, featuring female detective, Charlie Zailer. I had breakfast with Sophie in Harrogate, where I hoped that she would share with readers of LN Magazine the secret to writing a bestselling suspense novel.
When building up suspense in your novels, do you try to recreate feelings you have experienced in real life? My daughter had an audition with the St. Catherine’s college girls' choir, which is the only girls' choir associated with the university in the whole of Cambridge; it’s very prestigious. There were eleven of them, for two places and so we thought she would never get in. When the email arrived from the choir master, I looked in my email inbox and saw his name and I knew that in that email (she did get in, which was great!) would be the answer that we had been waiting for. Before opening it, I had a minor fission of fear; it was like, ‘oh no, now I can find out if I want to, and I have to perform the action which will lead to me finding out!’ I was quite nervous because it affected my real life, but in a thriller, I think you get a version of that, so when the detective says, ‘let me tell you who it was and why they did it, or whatever’ you experience a bit of that nervous feeling, where you desperately want to find out, but you are a little bit scared of finding out.
sure where that feeling comes from, because you are not really scared to find out who killed who in the fictional novel you are reading, but maybe it’s because you are used to having that feeling in real life; when there is about to be a revelation you get a bit nervous because you are about to find out something important and unconsciously you want to pull back from it and put a bit more distance between you and the fact that you are about to find out. Is there a formula for building up the suspense? I think that form related fear works really well in fiction. It means that for the first three quarters of the book, you are desperate to find out, and then when it starts to approach the end and you are going to find out, the excitement comes from a different source; do I actually want to know? The feeling in life is from the possibility of receiving bad news, but in a crime novel it’s from a different source. ‘I have so enjoyed not knowing and being in suspense, what if when I find out the truth it’s a disappointment?’ A bit like the end of the Wizard of Oz, when you find out he is just a bloke. Sometimes in crime novels the most fun for the readers is to be in suspense, it’s the not knowing. Why do you think some thrillers are less successful at creating suspense than others? Sometimes in crime novels, and I read a lot, some of them don’t have it; they have the question that needs to be answered; its usually, here’s a dead body and a range of suspects and at the end I will tell them which one is the murderer. And they think that’s enough, some writers think that it is sufficient to build up suspense, but it’s not enough. I think you need more and it’s hard to say what the formula is, but I think the writing needs to be very taught, each individual sentence should be tight and not flabby; so that the tension is embedded in the writing.
What about the characters, is it more important for them to find out the truth or the police to solve the mystery? There needs to be at least one character in the book for whom that desperation to know is absolutely consuming them, because if it’s just the police who want to solve the mystery in the course of their normal every day work, you don’t get that level of suspense. Because the police don’t feel that way about their job, they try and find out, but they are Do you think it’s a feeling that readers recognise in not full of suspense. I also have a heroine in each of my books who is particular to that book, for whom their own lives? everything is at stake; she is desperate to solve the If you are just reading a crime novel, I am not

mystery, as not doing so will ruin her life. In the case of Lasting Damage, in the case of Connie, she is sure that her husband has some link with 11 Bentley Grove, but she is unable to prove it, and there is this unexplained mystery of this address in her satnav, listed as home. That is another way to maintain suspense; there must be a main character in the book who is as desperate to find out as the reader is. Connie didn’t seem to know where she wanted to live, was this due to her parents influence over her? Interestingly, when I wrote that book I didn’t know why that was, but I wanted to include it because that
was how I felt when I was looking for a house and it alerted me to a possible psychological issue that I had. Most people I know, know where they would like to live. They might not be able to live there, because they cannot afford it, but they know. If you ask them, ‘do you want to live in a rural farm house surrounded by greenery or in the middle of a beautiful city?’ Most people can answer that; but I can’t and still don’t know where I should be living. In one way I am definitely suited to living in the city, because I am not very good at shopping or cooking, it’s nice to be able to live out of restaurants and round the corner to the shop, but on the other hand, aesthetically, I need the rural calm and quiet which comes from living in LN Magazine I 31 ♥

I now realise in hindsight, and after writing another book which goes into a whole aspect of psychology in some depth, that Connie’s family are so controlling and she is so enmeshed with her parents (their requirements and wishes and consciousness) that she has never been allowed to develop her own identity and that’s why she doesn’t know where she wants to live. In Lasting Damage, was it difficult to create an effective ending, when the possibilities seem limited at the beginning of the story? One of the challenges for me, is that at the beginning, unlike in some of my books, where any number of things might have happened and the reader just can’t get the answer, in Lasting Damage, you pretty much know at the beginning, either Kit is lying or Connie is a bit mad, so sustaining the suspense when there are only two possibilities was quite hard, because whichever it turned out to be, whether it’s Kit’s a baddie or Connie’s mad, you don’t want the reader to think ‘oh yes it’s that….’ It was quite hard to make it turn out that, yes, the address did mean something to Kit, but yet the ending, hopefully, was not disappointing as exactly how it had happened and why and what, is still a big surprise.
too complicated, too twisted; too Baroque. People either love or hate that book, whereas Lasting Damage, that seems to be universally liked. A lot of people think that book is the best. I am very fond of The Other Half Lives. What I like about it is it’s very spooky and for the whole first half of the book you don’t even know if there has been a crime committed at all, and yet there is lots of spookiness and atmosphere, but none of it comes from ghostliness; it’s not supernatural in any way. In that book I was deliberately trying to see whether you can be spooky just using human beings and no ghosts. It should be on television next March, that’s when it’s scheduled. Do you have a title for the new book? It’s called Kind of Cruel. I am just finishing it. I have two day’s work left on it, and it should be out next February. How do you feel about violence in your books? Although there is some violence in my books, that’s not what I am interested in. In my books there is as little violence as possible. So, in Lasting Damage there is a fairly horrific scene at the end, when Connie goes into the house, finally, and finds the horrible thing that’s in there; it’s horrific, but not violent. When your novel, The Point of Rescue was televised, the title was changed; did you mind? No, because they changed it for TV, which I think is different. They wanted a series title, because they hope to do all of the books eventually. They may not get to do them all, but hopefully they will do another two or three. They wanted a series name, so the next one, I suspect, will be called Case Sensitive Two: subtitle, The Other Half Lives, which is the one they are doing next. The Other Half Lives is my favourite of your books, is it yours too? People who love my books like that one best because of all the things I represent in crime fiction, that book has most of them, it’s sort of, the most extreme of all the things I am known for, such as twisted psychology, complicated plot. However, for people who don’t like my books or like them a bit, that’s the one they like the least, as they think it’s

Nicosia Neighbours: The Newcomer
Almost four months ago I had never even sat in a plane and not due to a fear of heights; simply because, unlike what you hear about Greeks these days, there are some of us who, long before the “crisis”, decided to live according to our means. Since that infamous crisis made me look for a better future away from my homeland, two things happened: I became a flight veteran and I started to love a brand new world called Cyprus. Well to be honest, not entirely new, since I don't have to think in a foreign language before I speak, being Greek and all, yet there are so many differences, so many extraordinary phenomena in everyday life laid out in front of my eyes these few months that I've been a Nicosia resident. Speaking about Nicosia, this city may not have the natural beauty of a seaside location on the island, but it is still the beating heart of a nation with a painful past that stays somewhat alive in the old parts of the city and even on signs of various kinds of businesses (such as the hair salon “den ksexnw” (I won’t forget). And the heart of this nation beats hard in Nicosia with its optimistic atmosphere, even today when the financial growth rate of the country is not as impressive as previous years. It is a city full of life during daytime when messengers go back and forth in the streets and people stop by one of the innumerable kiosks to have coffee in a can! (A strange phenomenon for me, since to me “having coffee” means killing a lot of time over an espresso.) The main avenues are filled with cars,

Youth in Action What is required to make the work-world accessible? by Margarita Drosopoulou
“In a progressive society change is constant and inevitable” (Disraeli, B. 1867). While everything is ruled by constant change, the work-world and the ideas and ideals it predicates, along with the demands and behaviours requested from the “society of professionals” are no exception. Finding a decent and related to your field-of-studies job is one of the most important issues that preoccupies the new generation, especially within financially-wrecked societies. Is this goal achievable? And if yes, how? The necessity for the formation of multifaceted and spirited personalities is constantly augmenting, resulting as the major requirement of all businesses, institutions and employers. All these changes in the core of societies, the opening of the borders and globalization, could be exploited by young professionals for their own benefit. Success is not … intangible. Living abroad, either for educational reasons or for work, constitutes a unique experience, an invaluable treasure, which supports and possibly determines the subsequent path and progress of those who ♥ 38 I LN Magazine
have the ambition not to stop where the “comfort zone” ends. The importance and benefits of the living-abroadexperience First and foremost, living abroad brings the wayfarers closer to different cultures and mentalities. They better comprehend and accept values, morals and ethics different from those which formed their own social, moral and ethical foundation. To be able to “survive” in a foreign environment, often less familiar and friendly than expected, to adapt to and function within new sociopolitical and economic grounds and to digest new social data, requires vigorousness, confidence and taking initiatives; traits that even if an individual possesses to a certain degree, are all undoubtedly sharpened through the living-abroad-experience. Leaving our comfort zone and exploring unknown territories contributes to the maturation of an individual’s personality on a personal and collective level. The flexibility in acting and reacting in different environments broadens our horizons and perspective. In the familiar environment of our “home”, the importance of such attributes might never be respectively appreciated. The spirit of conciliation acquired through accepting values and ethics different from the ones we were raised with, is a stepping-stone for our success as individuals, but as professionals as well. Showing patience and understanding towards difference and divergence, gives pace to straight and more objective judgment. Thereby, racist syndromes, which withhold humanity from operating as a unit with a common mission, are transcended. Additionally, living in a foreign country contributes
to the encountering of something different from the already “vested” experiences gained within the environment where we were raised and evolved as personalities. Thereupon, having experienced more than one side of the coin, we are able to form spherical opinions and sharpen our critical thinking through comparing the collected “data”. Revolutionary ideas appear through the comparison of information, experiences and the status quo in different terrains. Holistic approach of the living-abroad-experience: How to make it real The scientist in order to be able to fully apprehend his science ought to holistically approach the world first. The educators, who support studies abroad, often reassure that one of the goals of this undertaking is the training of future leaders, more dynamic and efficient, and with respect towards different cultures, political and financial systems. Young people feel that this opportunity is inaccessible to them, due to financial reasons or the lack of guidance towards where and how to address their inquiries. Initially, within the university borders several student-exchange programs are offered. Apart from the well-known Socrates-Erasmus Program, which offers a six-month to a year attendance in a foreign European University, there is also the “expansion” of it, the so-called Leonardo Da Vinci Program. The latter is offered to graduate students and provides compensated training in a European country. For those who are interested in keeping on with their pursuits overseas, they could take a chance on the Grundvig Actions Program, which also offers employment in foreign European institutions on the field of studies of each graduate, on a more professional level. Transatlantic opportunities Apart from the European programs, Universities offer transatlantic opportunities as well. The collaboration among the US, Australia and several other countries of the world, provides undergraduates with the opportunity of partial attendance in a foreign University and graduates with the opportunity of practical training and/or research. The University of Lund, Sweden, offers an exceptional new program named the Solander Program, which is based on the collaboration between Sweden, Australia and New Zealand. The primary goal of the program is the promotion, amplification and broadening of the scientific collaboration among 21 Universities of these countries. The Solander Program provides scholarships to young scientists in a Masters, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral level, and to independent researchers. The people who are responsible for the organisation of this program consider that the new scientists will introduce innovative and supple ideas in the field of sciences and research. Additionally, the program is also set up because it acknowledges the need for their financial support and for helping them establish their first international connections, which will open up the path for a future career internationally. Ivi Adamou - "Beat Bullying" campaign
Ivi Adamou, the young talented singer who will represent Cyprus at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest, will give a concert that aims to financially support "Beat Bullying", a campaign against school bullying. Giannis Miliokas, after his successful appearances on our island in January 2011, returns to Cyprus together with the songwriter, composer and singer Georgia Grammatikou. Giannis Miliokas is a Greekrock artist that first became known in the 80s. He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1955. He became known as both composer and singer, creating an interesting rock genre blending various musical styles, from Greek folk to pop. Valentine’s Day: Salad topped with Tomato Hearts Salad Ingredients: • Romaine and Leaf lettuce • Grape Tomatoes (7 per person) • Kalamata Olives (3 per person) • Cucumbers (2 tbsp. diced per person) • Feta Cheese (1-2 tablespoons per person)

Salad Instructions: 1. Wash, dry, and tear your lettuce into bite size pieces. Use your judgement on the amount of lettuce per person. 2. Remove the peel from the cucumber. Use a spoon to scrape out all of the seeds. Discard the seeds. Dice the cucumber into 1/2” pieces. 3. Cut Kalamata olives into thin slices. To assemble salads: Put a serving of lettuce on a salad plate. Top with cucumbers, kalamata olives and feta cheese. Carefully pick up your heart shaped tomatoes and artfully arrange them over the top of the salad. Serve your festive salads with homemade Tomato Vinaigrette or your favourite salad dressing. If you want to serve this as a dinner salad instead of a side salad, simply add some grilled chicken or shrimp.
To make heart tomatoes: 1. Place grape tomato on cutting board. Cut at a diagonal across the short side of the tomato. 2. Separate the two halves of the tomato. 3. Pick up one half of the cut tomato. 4. Rotate one half of the tomato 180 degrees (turn it upside down.)

Tomato Vinaigrette: (makes 5 tablespoons) • vine ripened tomatoes (6 small or 3 large) • 1 1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon oregano • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • salt and black pepper
5. Press the two tomato halves together forming a heart. 6. Finished heart shaped tomato. Tomato Vinaigrette Instructions: Cut vine ripened tomatoes into quarters. Sprinkle them with a pinch of salt and put into the bowl of a food processor. Puree the tomatoes until just slightly chunky. Pour tomato puree into a fine mesh sieve set over a measuring cup. Allow the juice to drip down into the cup. Use a rubber spatula to press on the tomato solids to extract as much juice as possible. Discard the seeds and tomato solids. You will need 1/2 cup of tomato juice for one recipe. Discard any extra juice.
Pour tomato juice into a small saucepan. Add red wine vinegar, oregano, and garlic. Heat over medium heat, simmering until liquid reduces to 3 tablespoons. Remove from heat and allow to cool. I like to strain this liquid to remove the chunks of garlic, but you don’t have to do this. The juice will be flavoured with garlic but I prefer not to bite into bits of garlic in my salad. Once cooled, slowly drizzle in the olive oil while continually whisking to create an emulsion (a good blending of a watery liquid with an oil.) Season with salt and pepper to taste. How To Make Your Own Ingredients • 4 chicken breasts (or however many you need) • 4 slices Swiss/Havarti cheese • 4 slices Cheddar cheese • 4 slices turkey ham • 1 package turkey bacon / pork bacon • 2 tsp. creole seasoning • Salt to taste
A Latin Romance Method 1. First begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F. Rinse the chicken breasts well, pat them dry, and butterfly them. 2. Once they’re butterflied, season with the creole seasoning and salt. On one side of the breast, place a ♥ 52 I LN Magazine
slice of ham, a slice of Havarti and a slice of cheddar. Fold the other half of the chicken breast over and begin wrapping the chicken in the bacon. You may have to secure the bacon with toothpicks if you’re using turkey bacon because it’s not as “elastic” as the pork kind. The turkey kind is much leaner and doesn’t have
Pechugas Rellenas nearly as much give. 3. Repeat this process until the whole breast is covered, and all of the chicken breasts are assembled. 4. Place the chicken breasts on a baking rack that has some elevation. 5. There will be a sauce that collects in the bottom pan which is what we’ll use to drizzle over the chicken once
it’s done. 6. Bake for 15 minutes on each side of the chicken and remove once the bacon is slightly crisp. 7. Let the chicken rest before slicing into rounds. Serve with white rice and the Valentine's salad from page 51. LN Magazine I 53 ♼

Luxury Dreams: Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 in New Dimensions On Monday, January 16th 2012 at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva, the new Montblanc Régulateur Nautique Timepiece Set was unveiled to the public and the international press. Accurate measuring as we know it today was born on board a ship: or, to be more precise, aboard vessels voyaging on the high seas. Before the dawn of satellite-assisted navigation, highly accurate clocks were the only instruments which could enable a mariner to exactly determine his position at sea, i.e. both his geographic latitude and his longitude. This is reason enough for a manufactory like Montblanc Villeret to devote its efforts to this theme and to devise innovative ideas that refresh watch lovers’ memories about this important tradition. The result debuts in the new Régulateur Nautique watch set in the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858, which will celebrate its world premiere at the SIHH 2012. Each set consists of a wristwatch chronograph with regulator dial and two time zones, along with a large navigational clock which, in addition to showing three time zones on its main regulator dial, also includes a world-time indicator. Only sixteen specimens of the Montblanc Régulateur Nautique watch set will be manufactured worldwide – eight sets with red gold wristwatch chronographs and eight more with wristwatch chronographs in white gold cases. Here’s a little run down of the special beauty of the new Montblanc Régulateur Nautique Wristwatch Chronograph. The Montblanc Régulateur Nautique Wristwatch Chronograph As its name states, the wristwatch chronograph in the Nautique watch sets from the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 is a watch with a regulator dial. Its functions and its design offer fascinating insights into the history of navigation on the high seas. The essential precondition for this is to know both the time at one’s harbour of departure and at one’s momentary location, i.e. the simultaneous display of the times in two different locations. Regulator Dial: The Face of Precise Time Measurement The regulator dial with a central minute-hand, a separate subdial for the hours at the “12” and the seconds shown on an additional subdial is an homage to the large, venerable and extremely

precise pendulum clocks that were still used in the 20th century to regulate other timepieces, hence the name “regulator.” To assure that the display of the passing seconds would never be covered by the very slow-moving hour-hand, the latter was relocated onto a separate subdial and completely divorced from the dial where the seconds were indicated. Regulator pendulum clocks of this sort also stood in the offices of harbourmasters in all of the world’s major ports. Captains would stop at the bureau shortly before departing on a voyage. Their final task before leaving the office was to synchronize their ship’s portable chronometer with the harbourmaster’s regulator clock so that the precise time shown on his clock could be “taken along” throughout the voyage. In those years, an exact reference time was indispensable for staying on course on the high seas. The allusion to the new Montblanc Chronograph Régulateur Nautique is thus quite valid. Dial with Depth The new Montblanc watch from the Collection Villeret 1858 doesn’t have a regulator dial of the sort that’s frequently used on watches of this type. Instead, it transforms its display area for eight different indicators into a topographical experience. The spectacle of home and local time, day and night display, chronograph, 30-minute counter, small seconds, and combined power reserve and windingzone display transpires on more than half a dozen levels. The dial is partly pierced to reveal manually executed circular graining on the movement’s plate, above which a connoisseur can admire the wheels of individual mechanisms. Some scales are applied as appliqués; others are inset into the dial. This symbolically represents the theme of depths and shallows: after all, the watch is named “Régulateur Nautique” and the first precise timepieces were developed 250 years ago specifically for navigation on the high seas. Second Time Zone and Day/Night Display The alpha and the omega of time-based navigation are to know the time in two different time zones, i.e. the current local time and the time in the harbour from which one’s vessel had departed. Only with this knowledge can one compare the time of the actual highest ascent of the sun above the horizon (i.e. local noon) with the time at the harbour of original

Luxury Dreams: Continued... departure and accordingly calculate one’s correct geographical longitude. This is why the Régulateur Nautique wristwatch chronograph shows the local time via a skeletonised hour-hand inside a small hours circle at the “12,” beneath which an hourhand indicates the home time (i.e. the time in one’s harbour of departure). When the watch is in its wearer’s home time zone, the skeletonised hourhand is always directly above the blued hand; when the wearer travels to a different time zone, he or she presses the button at the “10” to reposition the local hour-hand in hourly increments until it shows the correct time for the new zone. A 24-hour subdial with day/night display at the “1” indicates the time in the wearer’s home zone. Monopusher Chronograph with Column-Wheel Control The wristwatch in the Régulateur Nautique watch set measures brief intervals in the best tradition of the manufactory. Its chronograph Caliber MB M16.30 has a large elapsed-seconds hand with its staff at the centre of the dial and a counter for 30 elapsed minutes at the “3.” The chronograph functions in the classical manner via a columnwheel and horizontal coupling. The chronograph’s levers are meticulously handcrafted and the mise en function is also manually executed, whereby the contact surfaces of the chronograph’s levers are carefully
scrutinized under a loupe when the stopwatch functions are operated, then gradually and painstakingly hand-abraded to the nearest hundredth of a millimetre. The steel components and Minerva’s typically V-shaped chronograph bridge are manually bevelled and polished. The levers are abraded by gently rubbing them against a finegrained stone. The bridges are hand-embellished with Geneva waves. The large and massy screw balance with Phillips’ hairspring oscillates at the classical frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), which enables this chronograph to precisely measure elapsed intervals to the nearest fifth of a second. The stopwatch is operated via a button in the crown: this lone push-piece sequentially triggers the start, stop and zero-return functions. Power-Reserve Display with Winding-Zone Indication A genuine innovation in mechanical watch making is found in the lower half of the dial, where the large power-reserve display relies on a pair of hands to indicate two important items of information about the running autonomy. This display is absolutely indispensable for a navigational timepiece because reliable navigation is only assured if the watch is regularly wound and never stops running throughout the voyage. This is guaranteed by a daily glance at the exclusively combined power-reserve and winding-zone indicator, which not only shows whether the mainspring still contains enough energy, but also clearly indicates how many hours remain before the watch categorically demands manual winding. Watchmakers distinguish among
three different states for the mainspring in a mechanical wristwatch. In the zone of ordinary power reserve, the mainspring has enough energy to sustain good amplitude for the balance and thus to assure good rate accuracy. In the so-called “winding zone,” the mainspring still has sufficient power to keep the movement running, but can no longer maintain favourable amplitude: the watch’s rate suffers accordingly. The third state occurs when the mainspring is fully slackened, in which case the movement no longer runs. The combined power-reserve and winding-zone indicator of the Montblanc Régulateur Nautique wristwatch chronograph distinguishes between the two first-mentioned states: if the power reserve is in a favourable zone, the two hands are one atop the other and express the remaining duration of the power reserve as a specific number of hours. If tension in the mainspring has declined to where it can no longer maintain favourable amplitude in the balance (indicated by the French word “BAS”), the upper hand stands still and the lower, red hand moves into the red zone, thus indicating that the watch should again be manually wound. To display this complex and important information, Montblanc Villeret specially developed a patented nineteen-part mechanism, of which – in addition to the two hands – one can also see the blue steel rack with an arrow-shaped tip recalling the traditional Minerva logo.

The wristwatch is affixed to an alligator-leather strap: dark brown leather and a red gold pronged buckle complement the red gold wristwatch; marine blue leather and a white gold clasp attractively highlight the model with the white gold case.
Exclusive Editions in Red and White Gold The complicated and very finely finished mechanical movement is ensconced inside a gold case that attractively protects its intricate inner life. It now lies in 4th position, but is still a fantastic competitor in the world's fastest cars.

Method
1. Cut a section of card W9cm x L13.5cm to use as the decorative cover of the Valentine's card. 2. Choosing a desired stamp shape from the country companions Lovers Lane selection begin coating this with ink by patting the stamp directly onto the ink pad and then press firmly onto the centre of the card. 3. Using watercolour paints or pens start to colour in the stamp image where the flowers can be detailed with red and pink Stickles glitter glue. 4.. When dry, stick double sided tape on the reverse of the valentine’s picture down and along the lengths of each side to firmly fix this onto the main frame of the Valentine's card. 5.. Using another Country Companion shape - in this instance a cute mouse holding a bunch of garden flowers - follow steps 1 to 3 and then proceed to cut around the completed mouse leaving a slight border. 6. Stick a raised pad on the reverse of the mouse to lift the image when stuck onto the main card door picture. 7. Complete the card by placing peel off word stickers for your lettering onto the top of the card to convey your valentine’s message to your loved one. Exotic Pets Rabbits are Exotic Pets!

abbits are Exotic Pets you say? Actually, most vets will say that anything other than a cat, dog or other associated domestic animal is considered to be an exotic pet, and most people forget how wonderful a furry rabbit companion can be.
The reason other than the obvious look of shock on your partner’s beautifully makeup covered face wondering why the rabbit hasn’t got a ribbon around it with a diamond ring or set of earrings in it, is that rabbits need care and attention. It’s not an animal that will get by on the odd piece of affection. Obviously, if you want to divert attention away from things you do, it might still be a good idea, provided she gets past the fact that you bought her a bunny rabbit for Valentine’s Day. If you want more attention, however, it’s probably better to get her some jewellery or another equally expensive item that she can show off without worrying it’s going to run off or start chewing a carrot… As you can imagine, I don’t particularly have a great track record on Valentine’s Day, and contrary to my initial comments about rabbits as presents, I did see an old film recently where a woman received a cute, white bunny in a red ribbon bow (without any jewellery, I’d like to add) and she was as happy as a bright, sunny day.

Rabbits are very social animals and quite playful. They often form a close bond with their owner so expect to spend some time with your new buck toothed companion. Depending on the breed of rabbit, they can also live from 5 to 15 years of age with the right love and care. Generally rabbits are quite tame, rarely bite, make you laugh, and, most importantly I think, can be litter trained. You wouldn’t want to get your partner something that leaves its mark around the house; you probably do enough of that already. Interacting with your rabbit is very important for its happiness and therefore daily exercise and ‘playtime’ is essential. In fact, most rabbit owners will put more than one rabbit together to give some companionship if the owner cannot always spare the time themselves. Rabbits eat pellets you can get from any good pet store, but this is not a good diet; they also need lots of roughage and a variety of vegetables. Also, and I was surprised to find this out at my local pet store, rabbits need chew toys and do not necessarily like to be picked up, so be careful with them around active, young children who may not be so delicate with them.

Astro News NASA Discovers First Earthsize Planets Beyond Our Solar System By George Troullias Director of Kition Planetarium & Observatory
NASA's Kepler mission has discovered the first Earth-size planets orbiting a sun-like star outside our solar system. The planets, called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, are too close to their star to be in the so-called habitable zone where liquid water could exist on a planet's surface, but they are the smallest exoplanets ever confirmed around a star like our sun. The new planets are thought to be rocky. Kepler20e is slightly smaller than Venus, measuring 0.87 times the radius of Earth. Kepler-20f is a bit larger than Earth, measuring 1.03 times its radius. Both planets reside in a five-planet system called Kepler-20, approximately 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra. Kepler-20e orbits its parent star every 6.1 days and Kepler-20f every 19.6 days. These short orbital periods mean very hot, inhospitable worlds. Kepler20f, at 800 degrees Fahrenheit, is similar to an average day on the planet Mercury. The surface temperature of Kepler-20e, at more than 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, would melt glass. The Kepler-20 system includes three other planets that are larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune: Kepler-20b, the closest planet; Kepler-20c, the third planet; and Kepler-20d, the fifth planet, orbit their star every 3.7, 10.9 and 77.6 days respectively. All five planets have orbits lying roughly within Mercury's orbit in our solar system. The host star belongs to the same G-type class as our sun, although it is slightly smaller and cooler. The system has an unexpected arrangement. In our solar system, small, rocky worlds orbit close to the sun and large, gaseous worlds orbit farther out. In comparison, the planets of Kepler-20 are organised in alternating size: large, small, large, small and large. Scientists are not certain how the system evolved but they do not think the planets formed in their existing locations. They theorize the planets formed farther from their star and then migrated inward, likely through interactions with the disk of material from which they originated. This allowed the worlds to maintain their regular spacing despite alternating sizes. ♼ 84 I LN Magazine

The Kepler science team requires at least three transits to verify a signal as a planet. The Kepler science team uses ground-based telescopes and the Spitzer Space Telescope to review observations on planet candidates the spacecraft finds. The star field Kepler observes in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra can be seen only from ground-based observatories in spring through early fall. The data from these other observations help determine which candidates can be validated as planets. To validate Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f, astronomers used a computer program called Blender, which runs simulations to help rule out other astrophysical phenomena masquerading as a planet. On Dec. 5 the team announced the discovery of Kepler-22b in the habitable zone of its parent star. It is likely to be too large to have a rocky surface. While Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f are Earth-size, they are too close to their parent star to have liquid water on the surface. NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. JPL managed the Kepler mission's development.
