“The myth of wilderness... is that we can somehow leave nature untouched by our passage.”

As a society we are afraid of the unknown and because of this we have rules and regulations to order our daily lives. When something does not fit into this structure we try to understand it by putting it into a structure we are familiar with.

When it is something we deem valuable, we put it on a pedestal, to be admired from afar. This is seen in museums with priceless artifacts and art, historical homes and national parks, where you can ‘look but not touch,’ all in the name of preservation. We separate ourselves from these priceless objects and ‘valuable’ landscapes, to protect them from ourselves, with the mindset that if we do not do so we will destroy them.

We have removed ourselves from nature, protecting a few ‘significant’ areas and leaving the rest to be developmed as we see fit. The problem with this sentiment is that what is valuable to one person, may not be valuable to another. This could be seen in recent events where a sacred direction tree of the Djab Wurrung people was cut down to widen a highway. We cannot view ourselves as separate from the landscape but a part of it. The wilderness is not pure and untouched and not all that humans create is destructive. There is not one and the other, but a single ecosystem where humans and nature coexist.

By further reading into the Edgar’s Creek Conservation and Development Plan (2013), a few key themes emerged. The East and West side of the creek have two very different feelings both from the council and the community. The East side, adjacent to the neighboring community, is set to have a 1.5m unsealed path constructed, and is used as an informal walking park by residence. This side is more heavily used the West side of the river, most likely because of its location and easy access The West side of the creek is more remote. It is adjacent to an industrial zone and has no formalized bridges or entrance for users to be able to access it easily. This has created a sense of whimsy and other worldliness to the area, which has become valuable to the residence and users of this site. This ‘natural’ informal quality of the west is something users do not want the space to loose with over programing and generalized council furniture, and this is also where much of the re vegetation efforts by The Friends of Edgar’s Creek, has taken place over the years.

EXPLORATION OF THE GREATER AREA Located along the Edgar’s Creek between Henty Street and Jackson Reserve, this site is highly contaminated and with revegetation efforts, it is also highly constructed. Through research and site analysis, I narrowed my focus on two different sites to further explore our relationship with nature, using confronting design language and materials to questions “what it means to be a natural landscape?”

Most people walk through space, unlikely to look closer at their surrounding landscape and question what they see.

The re-vegetation pattern of the River Red Gums on this site was done in a grid like pattern and as this site has evolved over time the grid has started to breakdown with new pathways and re-vegetation efforts have emerging. Deconstructing the Grid, highlights the remnants of this grid, forcing people to acknowledge that they are in a constructed environment and potentially making them think about how man made structure can positively contribute to our landscape.

Re-vegetation efforts pre-2009, placed River Red Gums in a grid like layout. This unnatural placement, in an effort to create a natural environment, is an ideal example of how this area is actually constructed by humans with the intention for the space to resemble a natural landscape. By using the grid of the trees as a guide for my final form, it emphasizes the overall structural layout of the site.

Evolution of the Grid

UNCERTAINTY A time of questioning during which residence are unsure of what to make of the new grid like structure, questioning why such a structure would be built in this beautiful, natural landscape.

The current park users encounter this large wall and wonder why such a structure has been built on such a beautiful landscape.

People are curious about the space, as they begin to explore the hidden areas and wonder what the space will become.

A period of neglect, garbage and graffiti start to appear, and residence only pass by, and never interact with the space

It becomes ideal for graffiti and the edges begin to accumulate garbage.

The park users try to pass through the space, not lingering to long at this anomaly in the landscape.

The enclosed grids begin to collect garbage and are potentials for suspicious activity. The park users avoid this area, deeming it unsafe.

REDISCOVER

The wall begins the attract local artists, this contrast between built form and landscape as become a novelty, standing out in its surroundings. It has now become a local attraction, creating a sense of community.

The enclosed areas saw little human activity where vegetation was left to grow.

It now attracts researchers and has become of interest to the community, where local groups have begun to advocate for its protect.

NEGLECT

This unique structure becomes a novelty, attracting young people and artists. New and emerging ecological communities appear attracting researchers and community advocacy groups.

The edge had little use, and this new condition adds curiousty the the space. From this point, you are able to see the layout of the grid.

Only pass by the grid, it is used as a transient space as garbage accumulate and the perception of questionable activities thought to take place.

The grid has been accepted as usable space and becomes a part of the landscape, people begin to appropriate it.

THE CONSTRUCTED HILLSIDE One of the best places to look at the views of the Edgar’s Creek as well as the surrounding community, it is easy to overlook the fact that this entire hillside is completely constructed. The images below outline the sequence of this site evolving over time. To confront people with the fact that this is an artificially landscape, large concrete pillars are placed into the site which both collect rain and water runoff while also casting shade for vegetation, this man made structure is also able to function ecologically.

Shape and Shade Analysis The cross shape was selected for its ability to catch rain water runoff from the East facing slope while also providing shade for the establishment and survival of new vegetation. Various heights were explored to see which best served the purpose for size of shadow as well as visual impact.

The 2.5m pillar was selected as the final choice.

Pillar have been strategically located in areas of high sun exposure and little vegetation growth. These areas were reference from a Nearmap image taken on November 25th, 2019. In days prior, there had been 10 days of no rain and multiple days over 34 degrees Celsius.

THE CATALYST The pillars have been places in key, strategic areas along the hillside for two key reasons.

One, to capture rain water and runoff from the West and two, provide shade to an otherwise exposed area. This is to help promote vegetation growth and allow that vegetation to establish and provide its own shade of its own, creating a catalyst for growth.

Even though this site has been cleared and there have been attempts to re-vegetate this area, it is still considered a high weed risk by The Friends of Edgar’s Creek and because of the difficult topography it is difficult to access so that regular maintenance can occur.

Due to these factors, I believe that the key focus is this site should not be on planting EVC communities, but on maintaining and increasing the existing vegetation to become more resilient into the future.

2025 - the pillar has began to help the establishment of new vegetation through increased soil moisture allowing the succession of vegetation to occur.

2030 - the pillar has begun to degrade slowly from continued exposure to moisture and sun.

Vegetative communities have begun to establish on the west and south side of the pillar

2050 - the pillar has collapsed, however this provides a new habitat for both established flora as well as the existing fauna on the side for a continued future.

Through historical research and observation, I have broken down and explored the social and ecological functions of the existing concrete lawn. By layering each analysis on top of one another, I am able to get a greater picture of what is currently successful and what could be improved in the future design.

Much of the water that flows through the Concrete Lawn actually flows over the North lawn before reaching the centrally paved part of the site.

There is a strong North South wind during the summer months which was observed during my site observations. There are two corridors on the East and West sides of the site which sees the strongest winds.

The edges of the raised garden beds caught the leaves and garbage when pushed by the wind, which caused them to accumulate more in these areas.

The central East part of the Concrete lawn is one of the windiest areas as its most exposed and does not have very much tree protection.

Little wind can be felt on the South edge of the site, most likely due to tree protection.

The West end of the Concrete Lawn is often used by various university clubs to set up their sign up table and for sausage sizzles.

The central areas of the Concrete Lawn is often used for large gatherings. One such gathering can be seen here, this was a climate action protest located in between the raised garden beds.

The built form of the Raymond Priesley Buildings causes a wind tunnel to form under the building, creating a very unpleasant environment directly under the building.

During hotter days with cooler winds this wind can create a pleasant environment on the southern lawn area.

2 1 The central East West area of the Concrete Lawn is the most heavily used for pedestrian traffic.

Many of the observed pathways are due to physical barriers on site which the user has to go around. This has created various voids on site without pedestrian movement.

The north lawn is the single largest soft surface in all of the Concrete Lawn. This allowed people to spread out and have their own space. There was a mix of group sizes.

During this analysis, half the lawn was closed off due to water deeming it unusable. This area seems subject to seasonality.

The majority of people seated within this area came straight from the Union House and outer food establishments to sit and eat outside then leave. It was also the second most frequented space along with the raised planter beds in the center of the Concrete Lawn.

Most people would sit along the edge of the raised planting beds, often alone or in groups of two. I found that the larger groups of 3 or more sat on the grass patches on the planter beds or the larger north lawn.

The small nook seating along the edge often had one to two people sitting in them, and from what I saw most of the people did not know each other but there was just enough space to share.

TREES ON SITE

REFLECTING HISTORY This Masterplan reflects the layers history that the Union Lawn has by representing Townsend Creek in the wetland, the Ornamental Lake in the central gathering space and the current concrete lawn as an invisible outline around the design. All coming together to create an adaptive design which has been created to sustain future generations.

THE ENERGY PARK The aim of this project is to take the under utilized void between Union House and University Hall and provide students and staff with usable study spaces. The design is also an expression of energy consumption and sustainability, incorporating stationary exercise equipment, which generates electricity that feeds directly into the power outlets located strategically throughout the design. This allows the space to be energy efficient whilst providing students with practical study spaces that can support their electronic devices and become more aware of how much electricity is required to actually power these devices.

WETLAND ACTIVITY HUB The wetland and amphitheatre are the heart of the design, drawing people into the space and because of this it needs to adapt and accommodate a wide range of activities. The Amphitheatre contains a flex space at the bottom with room for a cafe or pop-up, while also acting as seating and storage. The large forecourt makes room for people to gather while the boardwalk along the wetland invites people to move further into the space, allowing them to slow down and enjoy their natural surroundings.

BRIDGE AND MAIN WALKWAY. This is a major thoroughfare which needs to be large enough to allow for high numbers of people moving through the site.

BOARDWALK AND SEATING AREA. This space is a combination of transient people leisurely walking along the wetland and people who want to relax and pause.

AMPHITHEATRE AND WETLAND. This space was created to allow for people to change their view points by sitting up on the amphitheatre while it also provides that intimate space of the boardwalk to move closer to the wetland for a different experience.

Eb and Flow was designed in response to the Swanston Street and Monash Road Revitalization Brief. This particular intersection is the final destination for student who commute, both of foot and by tram, to the East entrance of the University of Melbourne. It is a high foot traffic area with no external seating or permeable surfaces. In order to create a space which accommodated the flow of pedestrian traffic while also providing areas to sit and gather, I drew inspiration for the ebb and flow of water over pebbles to create two seating designs. Using the void in the center of the seat, I created a planter in order to inject softness into the design. Finally, an alternating pattern of blue stone pavers and grass to provide another layer of softness to an otherwise highly built environment.

SIDNEY MYER SITE

SITE AS A THOROUGHFARE I viewed the site as part of a greater pedestrian network because of its location at the North end Swanston Street as well as the final stop to the University of Melbourne Parkville Campus. There is very little seating along this 1.30 Km stretch of side walk where I observed 1 bench along the entire route that was not in a dedicated green space and little additional plantings. With these findings I came to the conclusion that combining seating and planting as part of my site design can be justified and is needed on the Sidney Myer site.

PERMISSION TO PAUSE One of my major findings while observing how people use that site was that the majority of people are moving through the space and those that do stop are concentrated at the North end of the site.

Those that are stopping are usually in groups of two or three and those that are on their own are often smokers. From this, I felt that the space needed some kind of disruption to the status quo of this space.

Giving people permission to pause in a space that is currently not accomodating to this behaviour.

PEOPLE AS FLOW Through my design exploration I went through various phases, however the theme remained the same. I wanted to view people has a flowing solid through the space like water and my intervention is the sand or stones which are shaped by an outside force.

DETAILING THE FINAL DESIGN The final design consisted of two different bench and planter shapes which were repeated throughout the site with three of each bench design. Each design was first hand drawn with desired dimensions then modeled in 3D using Rhino 6 and later detailed in AutoCAD.

INITIAL HAND DRAWN DETAILS OF DESIGN After exploring shapes and design in rhino I then detailed each bench and planter on paper by hand to easily refine the specifics and dimensions. There was a process of AutoCAD detailing and hand revisions back and forth before the final dimensions were set.

SITE DESIGN DETAILS Now that the bench and planter design was finalized, their placement and orientation on the site was finalized and the paving detail was developed to bring the entire design together.

This is a group project centered around climate change and the understanding that we need to began designing for the changing climate rather than the current one. With the help of technology and testing, we are able to respond to these changing temperatures which in turn creates a more resilient landscape for the future.

Term 2 Solar Analysis

Three Experiential Areas

Eight Thermal Experiences

Using landform and previous analysis to divide site into 3 experiential areas.

Site was further divided into 8 microclimates, each varying in thermal experiences.

Winter

Term 2 solar testing from 10am to 2pm During the cooler months and winter in particular, there are less areas of full sun.

However the open central space and the South end of the site can be used when needed and the outer mounds and cubbie spaces are still able to be used.

In the cooler months, users will gravitate more to the areas with more sunlight which is located down near the open area.

Shaded areas are less desirable as the temperature drops, especially with shade provided by trees.

Under ground tunnels one of the cooler more insulated areas on site.

Summer

Term 4 solar testing from 10am to 2pm During the hotter months, users will gravitate towards the shadowing created by the mounds with less activity around the exposed centre area.

The central area is more exposed during the warmer months which pushing activities to the outer edges and within the tunnels and cubbies.

Sky light looking down into the underground cubby. This is to allow light in and also for the children inside to see out.

Crawl spaces made out of recycled plastic are situated under ground where the children are able to experience a contrasting climatic experience to that of the one outside.

CLASSROOM BREAKDOWN

1. EXPOSED GREEN PLAY SPACE

Each classroom has varying thermal experiences for both winter and summer which allows for a dynamic and adaptive approach to teaching children about climate change. During the cooler months the central space and classroom 1 will be utilized most while in warmer months classroom 3 will be the most ideal space. All classrooms allow for both above and below ground experiences encouraging a more unique and diverse thermal and sensory play environment.
