Inspired by the skeletal frame of a python
Redefining tensile architecture
The vision for the Sydney Wildlife World project was to create a structure that emulated the skeletal frame of a python. This was realised using stainless steel knitted mesh supported by curved steel arches held in place by a grid of stainless cables.
The result creates an imaginative, open, exciting and attractive addition to Sydney Wildlife World. The internal environment needed to simulate nine separate eco-systems to accommodate the various plants and animals within the facility.

Ambitious architecture
Lightweight architecture at its best
This 3,000m2 tensioned PTFE membrane canopy was designed and installed at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West in Singapore, and is an excellent example of true lightweight architecture. The canopy was part of a US$190M project by Gammon PTE LTD, which included campus housing for 15,300 students and 630 staff.
The PTFE canopy sits at a height between 20-35m above ground level, spaning 40m and 70m in each direction to provide a beautiful ‘floating’ canopy above the events plaza and walkways below.
A complex system was designed to provide structural support to the canopy, comprising high strength Galfan cables, steel membrane clamp plates, structural shackles, and structural steel wall brackets. Incredibly, the entire canopy system weighs in at only 6.5kg/m2 due to the efficient use of surrounding concrete buildings to support the large forces generated by the tensioned membrane canopy.

Sheltering a sporting nation
Adelaide’s sporting legacy
Adelaide Oval has hosted both cricket and football since Colonial times and its recent redevelopment sets a new benchmark in stadium design! For Fabritecture, the project involved the design, supply and installation of 16,000m2 of PTFE membrane roofing for the new South and East stand’s dia-grid roof trusses.
This project was our most demanding at the time, and our team rose to the challenge, finishing the project on time to the complete satisfaction of the main contractor and the City of Adelaide.
The project involved the demolition of the existing structures (retaining the historic brick arches), and construction of new grandstands and facilities. The installation team battled high winds during the extremely complex installation, however Fabritecture’s stringent safety policies and procedures contributed significantly to the successful installation of the roof.

A stainless steel and ETFE masterpiece
A
a strong connection between the indoors and the outdoors.
The structure is suspended 10 stories above the courtyard by stainless steel tie rods that are fixed to the concrete substructure of the surrounding buildings. The lightweight nature of ETFE foil also meant that the canopy could be constructed using minimal structural support, giving the illusion of a free-floating structure.
This stunning fabric architecture provides a practical but beautiful structural feature.

‘floating’ canopy made from structural stainless steel and ETFE cushions was designed and built over the courtyard between the chancellery buildings to provide shelter from the elements. ETFE foil was chosen due to its translucency - providing

Enhancing the retail experience
16
Pacific Fair sets a new benchmark in retail
As part of the AUD$670M redevelopment of Pacific Fair Shopping Centre on the Gold Coast, two high-end structures were installed to create a superior retail experience: the Resort Roof, which provides a dramatic roof to the Resort area of the centre, and a spectacular Porte Cochère structure which crowns the centre’s main entry.
The 5,250m2 PTFE Resort Roof incorporates complex internal and external edge beams that dip and curve around the perimeter, creating a ribbon-like effect. The structure’s rafters are fitted with programmable LED’s that project colourful and striking patterns through the PTFE membrane cladding.
The award-winning Porte Cochère was inspired by a “whale’s tail”, which is often viewed in the Pacific Ocean, close by the centre. This 600m2 iconic structure incorporates complex steel geometry, comprised of a dia-grid shell with both convex and concave shape, supported by a two-branched tri-column steel structure, and clad with PTFE membrane.

Maintenance
We don’t treat maintenance as an afterthought. We think about it right from the conceptual stage.
At Fabritecture, we like to build structures that retain their fresh, clean appearance and require the minimal amount of aftercare.
By considering maintenance at the conceptual stage, we are able to design systems and solutions that minimise maintenance requirements.
We also incorporate safe access systems to roof areas to make regular inspections safe and easy.
Site inspections and fabric cleaning facilitate asset protection and value retention.

Fabric Architecture
Fabric Architecture is where the dreams of our clients and architects combine the use of lightweight materials with functional geometry to create shapes and inspiring structures.
Fabric is regarded as the “Fifth Element” of building materials. It has the capability to surpass design limitations set by traditional materials allowing boundaries to be pushed.
Architectural membranes reshape the way we think about architecture – bringing curvature, translucency, and clear spans to both external and internal spaces.
By pure design, fabric structures are a lighter, more environmentally efficient solution as the carbon footprint they generate during production is considerably lower than traditional construction.
The flexible nature of tensile fabric means that individual areas of any size can be fabricated, transported to site, and installed with maximum efficiency of time and cost.
Projects such as the Pacific Fair Resort Roof or ITE College West canopies demonstrate how steel and fabric achieve complex geometries that other building materials cannot.

ETFE
ETFE is a superb alternative to glass due to its lightweight, high translucency, and self-cleaning properties, while also offering dynamic aesthetic geometry.
ETFE is becoming an increasingly prominent choice for membrane structures due to its tremendous properties and multi-layered potential. ETFE can be constructed as a single-layer, or using multiple layers to create pneumatic cushions and cover largespans.
ETFE projects combine functionality with aesthetic architecture to create innovative designs that test the parameters of traditional tensile fabric structures. We constantly innovate to create custom extrusion solutions to suit the needs of individual projects.
