In the same way that Dawson speaks of ongoing flexibility and adaptation to changing practices within education, as a non-profit, the School must remain conscientious of how the guiding tenets of philanthropy continue to evolve. This starts with an awareness of the needs of our parent constituency and what inspires you to partner with the School. As we continue to welcome new generations of Dawson Bears to campus each school year, we see how the landscape of philanthropy is growing and advancing. Research shows that donors are becoming increasingly more invested in particular movements that positively impact the world around them and the communities in which they live; dedicated donors want a positive return on their investments and more involvement in passion projects, demonstrate loyalty to brands that speak to their hearts, and remain committed to organizations that support the same ethical and moral ideologies. And we hope that because our families’ beliefs and values align with the School’s Mission, that you continue to choose Dawson. Each year, Dawson’s Annual Fund supplements the School’s operating budget to provide the type of experience that sets this incredible school apart from the rest, and we look to unwavering donors as a consistent source of support. Fundraising is critical to the Dawson Difference, and as the School continues to cement itself as a center of academic excellence,
our deepening culture of philanthropy provides the groundwork. The spirit and generosity of our community enhance Dawson in impactful ways, and we are grateful that the partnerships we have formed help raise critical resources in support of the long-term sustainability of the School. One of our greatest strengths at Dawson is the interaction we have with so many of our wonderful community members. During the 2020-2021 academic year, we were lucky to have a shared enthusiasm with a select group of individuals who demonstrated a personal commitment of generosity by serving as members of our Development Committee: Amanda Gumberg, Amy Arenson, Perry & Nicole Rogers, Rocky Savio, Susan Borst, and Tom Kaplan. Every parent is a model for their children and giving alongside your children in support of the school they consider a second home reinforces their sense of purpose and joy, strengthens your relationship with them, and shows that your values are being passed on to their generation. Aliya and Dexter Fowler, parents to Ivy (‘31) and Naya (‘28), have been part of
the Dawson community for two years. As generous benefactors in support of our educational endeavors, we asked them about the motivating forces behind their support of The Alexander Dawson School.
Why did you choose Dawson to educate your children? We deeply appreciate Dawson’s approach toward child development. We believe the development of mind, body, and character is essential to an enriched, happy, and fulfilling life. We couldn’t be more grateful to raise our children this way, and as a family, we’re so excited to step up our involvement in a community that will shape our children’s lives.
How important is philanthropy to your family overall? What do you teach your children about leadership and philanthropy? We want to teach our children the core values of gratitude and generosity. We were both raised in a tradition of stewardship and want to extend this legacy into the next generation. Promoting appropriate and responsible philanthropy within the family is a wonderful way to surmount challenges such as future adulthood struggles of self-worth or fostering a sense of entitlement, materialism, and isolation. It is so important that our children grow up to become caring, generous adults with deeply held philanthropic values.
Why is giving to Dawson important, and why is the Annual Fund the most valuable way to give? Dawson depends on its Annual Fund for revenue beyond tuition in support of an outstanding learning environment at the School. Tuition and fees do not cover the full cost of educating each student, so the Annual Fund helps close this gap. This allows for a Dawson education to be accessible among a diverse range of qualified applicants.
What would you say to encourage more families to give to Dawson? Giving to Dawson helps the School provide our students with innovative classroom technology and equipment. Most importantly, it allows Dawson to recruit and retain exemplary teachers and faculty. If you believe in ensuring high-quality arts and athletics programs, academics that meet the obligations of a global society, and empathetic advocacy and servicelearning initiatives, please consider giving to Dawson. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.
HONORING CHARLIE SILVESTRI The Alexander Dawson School was proud to honor retiring Dawson School Trustee Charlie Silvestri at this year’s Leadership Donor Reception in November. Charlie, a resident of Las Vegas for more than 50 years, has been a trustee since the School’s inception in 2000. He and his wife, Marydean Martin, are renowned in Las Vegas for their decades of educational philanthropy, which isn’t surprising given his 26 years serving in teaching and leadership roles for the Clark County School District. As a member of the Dawson board, Charlie notes that no matter the disagreements or challenges, at the end of every meeting trustees come together to do what is best for the students, faculty, and staff. “The Foundation is 100% invested in the success of the School, and it’s this commitment, under the leadership of Board Chairman Oz Gutsche, that has made all the difference.” Charlie credits his years as a Dawson school trustee for helping him understand what a truly innovative education looks like. At the donor event, Dawson students honored Charlie for his 22 years of service to the School and his deep commitment to education by naming the Glowforge tool in the new K-4 Design Lab in his honor. “A great education can change the life of a child,” he says, “and let me tell you, no one educates our children better than Dawson.” The Alexander Dawson School community thanks you, Charlie!
THE DAWSON PARENT ASSOCIATION Dawson’s new Design Lab, an exciting initiative funded by the Dawson Parent Association, provides an innovative and collaborative space where students enjoy imaginative educational experiences that enhance the partnership between design and technology. Through meaningful Project-Based Learning endeavors within the Design Lab, students from kindergarten through fourth grade apply their curiosity and creativity toward solving realworld problems that improve the School and our community at large. The Design Lab, once an under-utilized space off of the Library, was renovated during the summer of 2021 and unveiled during Dawson’s Leadership Donor Reception on November 4, 2021. The School extends its heartfelt gratitude to the 2020-2021 Executive Board of the Dawson Parent Association, under the leadership of Co-Presidents Courtney Loughridge and Leslie Brodie, for their generous donation and steadfast support.

The Path to Academic Excellence is Paved by Advancement By Andrew Bishop, Assistant Head of School I love the New Year. It provides me an opportunity to reflect upon the past and that for which I am grateful. However, it is also when I start looking forward – forward to new growth, new traditions, and new possibilities.
Dawson student is therefore subsidized; meaning, families paying the full tuition price are still paying less than the School is spending to educate your child, leaving Dawson to rely on alternative sources of funding.
In 1817, the governor of New Hampshire amended Dartmouth College’s charter in the hope to make the college a public institution. Dartmouth fought this decision and a lengthy court battle ensued. The case made it all the way to the Supreme Court. Dartmouth alumnus Daniel Webster defended his alma mater in front of the Supreme Court and gave an impassioned argument that concluded with the declaration: “It is, sir, as I have said, a small college and yet there are those that love it.” In constitutional law, the Dartmouth College case established the concept that Schools are private, charitable organizations.
For context, during academic year 2020-2021, the total cost to educate a Dawson student was $35,021. The Alexander Dawson Foundation contributed $3,127,148 ($6,254 per student), while Dawson Annual Fund donations and other sources of revenue accounted for an additional $2,063 per student. These sources of income are incredibly crucial, which is why recurring giving toward the Annual Fund matters: We must work each year to close the gap in tuition between the cost of a Dawson education and the tuition price in order to provide the equitable academic experience we promise our students today and for those who will enter our doors well into the future.
The success of last year’s 100 in 100 Annual Fund campaign reminded me of Webster’s declaration and affirms the fact that while Dawson might be a small school – a young school, an emerging school – it is, nonetheless, a school so many people love. The success of our 100 in 100 campaign highlights the fact that Dawson is a school on a trajectory to achieve national excellence, destined to achieve monumental results in the coming years. Funding for private schools is sometimes tricky to understand and often even unknown to many of the families choosing this type of educational environment for their children. As an independent, not-for-profit school, Dawson does not receive state or federal funding. The School therefore relies entirely on tuition dollars, the Alexander Dawson Foundation’s bond payment (i.e., our mortgage payment), and charitable donations from our community. The cost of an education for every single

I know that every parent wants to do what they can for Dawson; every parent wants to help out in any way they can. I know the parents; I know they love the culture of Dawson.” Advancement with regard to academic institutions is defined by Independent School Management as the “strategic process by which schools advance missionappropriate constituent relations through the integration of the school’s admission, marketing and communications, and development programs.” Under the umbrella of our

Advancement Team, the School works to identify, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward prospects and donors to establish and nurture relationships and raise resources for Dawson. And to meet and exceed our goals, we must build a culture of philanthropy that helps provide for a culture of academic excellence. Last year’s generous support allowed us to strengthen many important relationships across several constituencies and make unimaginable strides in support of our campus and facilities; health and safety initiatives; teaching and learning resources; diversity, equity, and inclusion work; and our all-around “I Love Everything About Dawson” designation. The giving percentages of our different constituencies are a direct endorsement of the School’s Mission and Vision, and we were humbled with pride and gratitude that we achieved 100 percent participation from our faculty and staff; 100 percent participation from our school leadership team, Foundation trustees, and school trustees; and 63 percent from our families – up from 32 percent the previous year and in alignment with the average for other national independent schools. Dawson achieved great things during the 100 in 100 Annual Fund Campaign due to the support of our entire community, and the unwavering dedication and determination of this school during the 2020-2021 year should make all of us proud. Yet, the work is just beginning, and the support surrounding the School’s foundational principles, planning, and processes is taking formidable shape. As Dawson continues to transform and enhance itself as a center of academic excellence, the School’s growing complementary partnerships and its alignment of resources with our Mission will ensure long-term sustainability. As last year’s success as a beacon for the future, we can further establish and nurture a new and ongoing tradition of giving within our community and beyond. Instead of resting on our laurels, we are moving toward further success. We are hopeful yet confident that in 2021-2022, our community will dig even deeper, and we will surpass last year’s totals and set new records in regards to philanthropic impact and support. Thank you for taking on the special and vital role with us as a loving investor in our students and their education. We are stronger together, and I cannot thank you enough for your steadfast support and belief in the school we share.

In 2020-21, the total cost to educate a Dawson student was $35,021. While tuition covered most of this cost, the School relied on Dawson Annual Fund donations and other sources of revenue to supplement tuition. The Alexander Dawson Foundation contributed $3,127,148 ($6,254 per student). Dawson Annual Fund donations and other sources of revenue accounted for an additional $2,063 per student. These sources of income were crucial in continuing to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience.
